San Juan - Day Five Wednesday, 29 March 1927.
Dagen O'Malley:
Dagen will call Alan Towner Cole and explain how she has gotten in trouble and can he come and help her. She plays the sympathy route, being afraid of jail.

Simkins, a very junior aide, answers the phone at the Governor's Palace. He's sorry, but the offices are closed. If the matter is urgent, he will try to reach Mr. Towner, but he is usually at dinner at this hour, followed by some form of entertainment.

Joe Farnsworth:
Joe makes a collect phone call to Lou Stein Investigations and informs them of his situation.

The night duty man at the office, Lew Foley, takes down the report. He'll pass it along to the Old Man. Joe should just sit tight. They'll be in touch.

Henry Richards, Ph.D.:
Henry will call Professor Newhouse to report on the search for Martin, leaving out the unusual bits, only saying that Martin is apparently heading into the jungle on an expedition, and Henry plans to follow.

Newhouse's maid calls him from his supper. He is surprised to hear from Henry, listening with some concern that his mutton is getting cold. Lucinda is out tonight for her Ladies' Club meeting, she's Secretary this year.

Once he concentrates enough to understand the situation, he promises to get in touch with an alumnus who graduated in 1919 and is operating a law firm in San Juan, Antonio Lasaga. He isn't sure he can get in touch tonight, but Henry should hear from him tomorrow morning, well, by noon anyway.

In reply to Keeper of Secrets (msg # 1):

She will tell him it is urgent. She only gets one call and she is in jail. Please help her get out of here. She is just a student and these police scare her. She will try to seem helpless, hoping the aide will help her. She is a personal friend of Alan, just ask him about me.

Henry settles into his cell, content that what can be done is being done.  He's used to being patient, and will wait for outside assistance to spring them.

San Juan - Day Five Wednesday, 29 March 1927.
Although the quiet is broken from time to time with weeping and screaming, the night passes uneventfully. Before breakfast, Dagen and Henry and Joe are summoned from their cells.

Alan does his best to comfort Dagen over her ordeal, although a slight smirk never leaves his mouth. There is a local lawyer, Honorario Rivera, present to represent Henry and Joe on behalf of Miskatonic University. Soon they are taken before a magistrate.

There is no improvement to Matthias's condition. The dead man has been identified. He is George Woodrow, the British Botanist who was Martin's roommate.

Procurador Rivera indicates that Joe has admitted shooting George Woodrow and the bullet has obviously caused his death. Therefore, he indicts Joe for murder. He wants him remanded to jail without bond, indefinitely. The other two should also be held in custody as material witnesses.

Honorario points out that all three individuals are cooperating with the investigation and there is no explanation for the broken window, the attack on Mr. Biermann, or the disappearance of Lola Figueroa. It passes belief that these three Americans came to Puerto Rico to kill this Englishman and just happened to run into him, dressed in a Carnivale costume, in Lola Figueroa's apartments. In any event the police have not disputed that Joe acted in defense of himself and others. He asks that they be released forthwith.

Of course all of the proceedings are conducted in colloquial Spanish. Joe can follow things pretty well, Dagen catches the occasional sentence. Henry has no idea what is being said.

"I also did some jail time a few years ago. Spent a whole summer in jail reading books. I pumped a ton of new knowledge and new thinking into myself." Tommy Lee

Joe does his best to translate for Dagen and Henry.  He listens and his head drops a bit,  "You two are probably in the clear. Having shot the man, I'm in a whole lot of trouble it seems.  The good news, our mouthpiece, Honorario Rivera, appears to be pretty shrewd."

Dagen looks at Alan "Alan, can your office do anything. We are here looking for Martin, he has disappeared. I don't remember, did you know Martin? We had classes together. I really don't want to stay another night in this horrid place" she says as she stays close to him, hoping he can help.

"Take heart," Henry assures Joe, "you acted in self-defense. While they may want a scapegoat to hide an uncomfortable mystery, they can't ignore that."

In reply to Dagen O'Malley (msg # 11):

"Let me see what I can do," he replies to Dagen, giving her hand a squeeze. He catches Honorario's eye and, with the court's permission, they confer for a moment in whispered Spanish.

Honorario pleads for the judge to set reasonable bail. Mr. Alan Cole, of the Governor's staff, has undertaken to guarantee their conduct and their appearance to all court dates.

The judge considers this, then sets bail for Dagen and Henry at $2000 each, $10,000 for Joe. Honorario says that Miskatonic University of Arkham, Massachusetts will stand surety for Henry, and Lou Stein Investigations of the same city for Joe. Alan will stand bail for Dagen.

The judge, over the Procurador's objections, agrees. He admonishes the defendants not to leave the environs of San Juan without the court's permission.

"Well," Henry says once they are outside, then repeats it.  "Well."

"If that masked man was Martin's companion," he finally says, "I think we can assume that the other was Martin.  Why he would have attacked us, I do not know.  But we need to get somewhere private so we can plan."

"Shall we return to the hotel?"

In reply to Dagen O'Malley (msg # 14):

Alan gives Dagen a slightly bewildered look as they walk out into the bright morning air. "Uh... Dagen," he says with a chuckle, "It's only about nine-fifteen. In the morning. I don't usually start drinking that early.

"Anyway, I walked over from my residence in the Governor's Palace and I have to get back to work now. Maybe we can get a drink this evening, though it will have to be late, I have a Governor's function to attend."

He gives her a quick, brotherly hug and pecks on her forehead, "Great to see you again."

Back in their room, Henry pulls the papers he'd recovered from his coat pockets, and tries his best to flatten them and put them in some sort of order.

"I don't know if these papers were what Martin and his friend were trying to prevent us from seeing or not," he says, "but I'll want to go over them in some detail to see if there are any clues."
