San Juan - Day One
The Caribbean Star docks just after 9:00 a.m. Stewards assist with arrangements to have luggage transferred to the passenger's hotels and porters haul things to trucks and carts provided by the various hotels. Taxis await to whisk guests to their lodgings.

Reservations have been made for the investigators at San Juan’s first luxury hotel, the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel. Just seven years old and built at a cost of a million dollars, it is set on a narrow spit of land between the Atlantic Ocean and the Laguna del Condado on Ashford Avenue.

The creation of the Warren and Whitmore architectural firm (which also designed New York’s Grand Central Station) is a gem of Spanish Revival architecture with Beaux Arts-style features, including white walls, red tiles, French windows, and lofty ceilings. The floors of the public areas and the main staircase are decorated with marble and mosaics and a flagstone-paved terrace fronts the ocean. Giant pandanu palms, various flowering bougainvilleas, fruit trees, and coconut palms enhance the terrace and the hotels gardens.

Guests can enjoy the hotel tennis courts and swimming pool, as well as ocean bathing. There is an excellent restaurant with nightly entertainment overlooking the oceanfront terrace. There’s also a less-pricy coffee shop in the lobby, and a newsstand, a tobacconist, a florist, and a shoeshine stand.

Miss O’Malley has a two-room suite facing the Atlantic on the fifth (and highest) floor. Matthias Biermann’s room also faces the ocean, though on the third floor. Professor Richards and Joe Farnsworth are on the laguna side looking out on Ashford Avenue, though they can catch glimpses of the water beyond the shops and fishing boats.

By early afternoon everyone is registered, unpacked, and has had luncheon. Joe and Henry and Dagen have been given an address for Mr. Bosley from their contacts--412 Calle Larrinaga. There is an electric tram system in the city and taxicabs are plentiful.

"This is quite a bit more luxurious than the last time I was in the field," Henry notes as the group gathers.  "I would not take it amiss if the search for Martin took a few days."

Dagen comes down dressed in a casual dress with boots and has her shoulder bag "Hello Mr. Richards. I have to agree, this is not exactly roughing it. I just wish Martin was here to enjoy it with me"

In reply to Henry Richards, Ph.D. (msg # 2):

"To me, the smell of fresh-made coffee is one of the greatest inventions." Hugh Jackman

Joe replies, "Yes. I am unaccustomed to this level of luxury. I usually end up staying in something far less nice. I'm headed down for some coffee. I'll meet you int the coffee shop in the lobby."
Joe walks out of the room and heads towards the coffee shop.

It's hot and humid in the early afternoon as the four new friends come out of the lobby. The doorman whistles for the first cab in the rank, an old Model T, but buffed to a high gloss.

"I'm Eddie," the driver says, "Where to?"

"You been here long?"

"You'd never think of taking a cab if you had to walk a mile down Chicago's Michigan Avenue. But in a bad city you take a cab just to go around the corner." Helmut Jahn.

Joe responds, "Hello Eddie!  Can you drive us to 412 Calle Larrinaga?  No rush, now how much will you charge?"

Dagen gets in "Don't worry about it Eddie, please take us there and then wait. Do a good job and there is a bonus in it for you" she says as she looks around.

Henry gets into the cab, clearly enjoying himself.

"Just in," he answers Eddie.  "What about yourself?  Have you lived here long?"

"The postman wants an autograph. The cab driver wants a picture. The waitress wants a handshake. Everyone wants a piece of you." John Lennon

Joe's facial expression turns a bit sour. He says nothing and gets in the cab.

"Oh, no so very much money at all, senor, just... just fifty cents American... each. And Calle Larrinaga is across town, take us forty-five minutes to get there. Very cheap, si?

"I'm native San Juan, all my life, 'cept four years in US Navy. That's how come I speak so good English."

Once everyone is settled, Matthias up front with Eddie, the others in the back seat, the taxi pulls into the traffic.

As he goes, he points out the various sights.
