Latest Portrait Gallery Update

Due to time constraints and various computer difficulties, I will not be responding to individual emails for portrait submission that were added this cycle.  Sorry.

This is the list of the updated galleries - 79 portraits were added.

Only one per cycle (max) was accepted from any individual user, and some submitted portraits were rejected for quality, copyright, etc. issues.  If you do not find your submitted portrait in the updated galleries, AND your submission follows the Portrait FAQs guidelines, you can re-submit your portrait.

I don't see any new portraits under Female Fantasy Demihuman. Are you certain one was added?

Please note that the above update was done in early November.  Portraits submitted shortly above Christmas would not be included in it.

Unfortunately I am lamentably behind on portrait updates.  I hope to get one done either this weekend or next, but that will depend on how much free time I have.  I no longer have active help with portrait editing.

There are close to 10,000 portraits in the gallery, which gives a pretty good representation for almost every type of picture.

Because of the number of portraits already in the gallery, once portrait updates commence a regular cycle, it will be on a 1 per month schedule in the future.

Also, I am likely going to suspend responding emails for portrait submissions, and will post 'update done' reminders in this forum, both to eliminate the bouncebacks and to save time so that I won't have to commit such a large chunk of time to the actual update.

The portrait gallery has been updated with all accepted submissions as of now.

If you sent in a portrait between now and the last update, please check the indicated galleries (hint-- look at the last page of each gallery, or last pages if the number of portrait on the last page is less than the number of portraits added in that gallery.)

If you cannot find your submission, then your portrait was likely rejected due to one of the following reasons or (less likely) not received:

quote:
1) a duplicate or reasonably similar portrait already exists in the gallery

2) we could not get a usable crop from your submission that displayed well at both 100x100 & 50x50 pixels

3) your portrait was copyrighted or the recognized work of an artist who does not give permission for their creations to be used on sites other than their own

4) you submitted more than 3 (of which I pick the best one for the gallery) submissions since the last update

5) your submission contained content not suitable for family-friendly viewing


Please do not email me asking me where your portrait was used.  If the submission was added, it can be found in the last pages of one of the categories listed in the table above.  At this time, due to a shortage of free time, I am not responding to portrait-submission related questions individually.

Portrait gallery updates will be done only 1 per month on the 3rd weekend of the month going forward, with only 1 submission (maximum) accepted per RPoL user. We have 9349 portraits in the gallery currently, and all categories have a good selection from which to choose.

I no longer respond to submissions via email -- this notification is the only one provided.  Please check the last pages in the galleries if you want to know where your submitted portrait was used.

Also please remember that portraits will not always be placed in gallery suggested with the submission.

Again, emails are no longer sent in response to submissions.  Please check the last pages of the galleries listed to find your portrait.

A reminder - 1 submission per cycle per user.  If you send 2-3 submissions, I pick one.  If you send more than that, they are all rejected.  (Sorry, but with almost 10,000 portraits in the gallery already, there's no need for mass 'random portraits that I like) submissions.)

mmr454 and mfr247 are virtual duplicates of each other. (Look like the same picture, but one is cropped closer-in than the other.)

ffs019 and ffs158 are duplicates, and fmc507 is a closer crop of the same image.

Is there a way to browse the portrait galleries directly? I go in through a character, but that's not always satisfactory.

Sorry for not responding sooner - didn't see the original question.

There is no official way to browse the portrait gallery directly through RPoL.

There is an 'unofficial way of sorts', though it is not updated as frequently as the portrait gallery and may not contain recently added portraits.  I keep my own site with the portrait gallery, as well as a 'recategorized gallery' that may one day be implemented live on site.

*Note -- A couple of people sent in submissions containing more than 3 submissions.  Normally, these are rejected without consideration.  However, I have included 1 portrait from each and may continue to do so unless I get inundated with 'multiple submissions' again.

Any portrait submitted as a link will be discarded without consideration.

Portraits sent as zipped or compressed files are discarded without opening.

Portraits that are inserted into an email rather than attached will be used only if they can be simply copied over into my editing software.

Each portrait update is posted here.  If you want to know when the next one will be done, look at the date of the last and add approximately a month (sometimes it's a little less, sometimes it's a little more).

Portrait Update June 25, 2011

Latest update done -- These categories have new additions.  All recent submissions accepted are at the ends of these galleries.

I've been getting a lot of links in portrait submissions lately -- If you send a link to a portrait, your email will be discarded.  Only attached portraits are considered.  I do not follow links, and I do not open compressed image files.

Usual Reminders

Please check your email after sending to make sure your attachment saved correctly.  If your email arrived with no attachment, or the attachment will not open because the file formatting has been corrupted .... If you can't open the attachment from your 'sent files' folder, you can be pretty sure I can't open it either.

I do not reply to individual email requests to know where submissions were placed.  This notification is the only one given, and all submissions (UNLESS OTHERWISE CLEARLY NOTED) are added to the ends of the gallery categories.

If I KNOW that a submission is copyrighted and you do not include reasonable information regarding where you received permission to use it, the submission will not be accepted.  (Please don't bring up the usual arguments -- after 7 years of doing this, my mind's pretty well made up as to what I will and will not do re: copyrights)

Other reasons a submission may not be accepted:

-1 per user per update cycle

-pic was smaller than 100x100 pixels and enlarging caused blatant deterioration in quality

-An existing character/photo is already in the gallery or is sufficiently similar

-When cropped and size, the image displayed is unrecognizable.  Sometimes things that look great full size just don't at 100x100

One more reminder ...

Please do not send in Disney images.  None will be accepted.  Disney is quite firm that they do not allow their images to be used without generous recompense of one form or another.  And no, I will not accept any assurances that you received special dispensation .... ;)

Thanks for the hard work - I am a bit of a graphic artist and would be willing to aide you in your duties.

Also when a person sends in a portriat- how do we know what area you decide to post it in - can we recommend an area?

I sent in a portrait and it was art put together by myself and I do not think that I mentioned that.

You can recommend an area, but it may not go there.  When I number and upload the portraits, I'm generally no longer even looking at the emails that came with them, just the portrait itself.  If you don't find it where you expect it, check the other likely galleries.

Also, especially with Anime portraits, look in the other gender galleries.  You may know that X character is a male/female ... but .... ;)

Portrait Update November 25, 2011

Portrait updates have been done for the month, and the below table shows the updated galleries.  All additions can be found at the end of the category.

A reminder -- portrait updates are done (roughly) once a month.  This is the only notification given as to where portraits are located -- I no longer do individual emails because of the time it takes, the frequency of getting my emails bounced back, and the irritation of having my IP put on spam lists by people and/or their email providers because I'm responding to their emails.

There are a few people working on tags when they have time.  (I am occasionally one of them.)

Well, portraits are generally sorted according to how they appear, rather than who the character really is.  I don't know who Rukia is (don't watch Bleach), but someone, somewhere along the line, apparently thought Rukia looks like a male businessman (in a lot of cases, the person submitting the portrait suggests where the portrait should be filed, although that doesn't always end up being where they end up.)

Yep, I'm afraid "Rukia from bleach" doesn't mean anything to me, and probably not to the portrait editor (though she could surprise me :-) ).  It's all based on looks, rather than actual identity.

You are allowed one submission her updating cycle.  If you submitted more than one portrait in a single cycle, only the first one will be accepted.

Could it be that you ran afoul of the limit on the number of submissions?

Basically if you submit one or two portraits in a month, then they will both be considered, and one may be added*.  If you submit three or more in a month, then they will all be rejected.

*Edit: Not necessarily the first submission.  Quality of the image and subject matter are considered.

It's because we prefer to maintain some control over content and quality.

Additionally, the people who actually pay for the portrait servers, and let RPoL use them for free, prefer to have some say in who actually has access to them.

Also considered is whether or not the same (or a very similar) image has already been added.  I know a few years ago there was a minor problem with duplicate images (I saw some in two or three different places).  Just because you've found THE perfect image for your character doesn't mean it hasn't already been posted on behalf of someone else...

Which is, I would guess, part of the reason behind having all the character portraits posted by administration, rather than by individual members.  Some people can't be bothered to actually verify that the image they want isn't already part of the database...rather than go to that effort, they'd just post it again elsewhere.

Ah, I didn't think storage of 100x100 pix would be much of an issue: props and thanks to whomever does that for us, then.  Still, for feedback, it would be very nice to be able to have our own avatars - I can understand not being able to store them here, if the server thing is an issue, but there are plenty of places that can be imbedded without trouble (photobucket comes to mind, for instance) and without any strain on the rpol servers.  It seems that would be a win-win to save you guys a bunch of effort and lead to a more satisfied membership.

Not really saving us any effort, because then we'd have to be on the lookout for inappropriate images in games (rather than just rejecting them during the submission sorting process).

As I said above, we prefer to have control over the content of the portraits.

Another thing to consider - are you sending it as a link or an attachment?  submissions with links are not opened or considered, even if they make it through my spam filters.

Are you looking at all the updated categories?  It may not have gone where you expected it to go.

Are you sending the email with a title and text along with an an attachment?  If not, your emails may not be making it through dual spam filters.

Is it a copyrighted image? (any submission with a copyright symbol needs to include permission to use).

If you are sending more than one email with submissions in each, I choose the one to use.

In fact, it can be better to send one too large than attempt to change it yourself and wind up with one the portrait editer won't, or can't, use.

Please also note that only 1 portrait per user per update cycle will be added -- and if you send more than three there is a very good chance that the submission will not be considered at all.

Likely the update will be done tomorrow night or Saturday morning.

We have a large selection of portraits already in the gallery, and the portraits are hosted on space provided by volunteers.  If there are that many portraits that you MUST have, you'll need to submit them one at a time each month, or at least in quantities of 3 (from which a maximum of 1 will be selected).

Oh? I didn't know that. Where does it say so?
It doesn't say so in the guideline for submitting picture (in fact that guideline doesn't mention the 5k limit either):

OK, after actively searching for it I found it in the FAQ. It is perfectly clearly spelled out but really, a FAQ should be a place for clarifying things if you have a question. I shouldn't be required to read the entire FAQ in order to avoid violating rules. If this is the intent it should be named "Rpol rules" or some such, not FAQ. At the very least the guideline should refer to the FAQ.


Anyway. What do I do now? Should I resubmit the most important picture then?

Thanks for all your great work, guys! d(^_^)z

My question was mostly just trying to sound out what the mods prefer, rather than what the rules were. Seems like you guys would rather tweak images yourselves than fix whatever I hand off to you. (Though I was going to delegate the task to the same artist friend, who knows all about DPI and other Photoshoppy things.)

Adding a link to your submission will, if I recall correctly, result in Shannara's spam filter sweeping that particular email into oblivion.  If (and I should underscore 'if') the mods accept info about people doing portraits on commission (they don't generally allow anyone to advertise 'for profit' ventures anywhere else on the site, so I don't think this would get much traction), it would likely have to be via a different route than a portrait submission email.

I only WISH I could auto filter links out.

What happens with links is that I ignore them completely -- meaning if you link to your submission rather than attach it, the email goes in the 'Rejected' box.

If having credits listed is a requirement for use of the picture, I will likely weigh two things: 1) How many people I think would use the picture and 2) Do I want to take / have the time necessary to add it to the credits page?

Semantics, really. The most likely way to learn that you can submit a portrait is when looking for one to use yourself (why would you need to submit one if you haven't looked at the ones available)? On this page is a very clear box which says "Want to submit a portrait?" and the instructions here do not limit you to how many you can send.

Word choice aside, my point still stands: if you want people to follow the rules, make it easy to know what they are. Hiding them in the FAQs (I've been a member of this site for many years now and can probably count on one hand the number of times I've ever needed to use the FAQs) only causes more work for the mods.

Several times since then, anytime I was planning to do something out of the ordinary, I checked it. It is because of the FAQs that I know about language groups. I believe that to be a good member of any society, from the global society on down to the little online one we have here, you must know the rules of that society.

Do I think the FAQ and Help sections could be improved? Sure, some things are buried a little. But everything is there, and organized very well.

In real life, they say, "Ignorance of the law is no excuse for breaking the law." I would say a perfect amendment to that for RPoL would be, "'It's too hard to find' is no excuse for ignorance of the law."

@facemaker: I just noticed that many of the other portrait credits had links to the artist's website but, like a dope, didn't think to include my friend's. I didn't mean to make it sound like a cash-grab. Just trying to make sure anyone who was interested in her art could find it. ^_^;

@Shannara: If your e-mail client has filters, you could just make one that deposits any message containing "http:" (or "https:") straight into your spam folder, or a "Stuff with a Link in it" Folder and why am I still talking after having just gotten myself in trouble? :X

Well, we're nothing if not utterly inefficient.

Rather than autobleep profanity in posts, we inist that users make the effort to control themselves.   Rather than assume everything is OK unless someone sends us an rMail, we read every public post on the site.  It goes on... don't get me started on adult game moderation.

While yes, that qualification can easily be put in the submission list, and I have no issues with that, I still doubt most users will bother to read it.  Even with an account creation page which says in bold orange type that "Duplicate accounts will be removed", we still get a lot of "I didn't know multiple accounts weren't allowed here... sorry!"

I don't seriously think it will make it any less work for us to write it out more plainly on the page given the number of folks who already violate things plainly written on the applicable pages, so that's a non-persusasive argument to make.

@jazzman831: I'm with ya bud. It *seems* like a no brainer. It's like an easy *text* change right? I really need to retire so I can help out with stuff like this. FYI. I'm filling up my super soaker now. I was going to use vodka but decided it was better to drink that in one hand while shooting with the other.

We're playing a bloody game here so in that sense I get the chill factor but where the heck is the fun in that? I actually found the FAQ link now that somebody mentioned it. Don't ask if I read anything. I'm not sure I passed 6th grade level reading comprehension anyway but I can wash rocks and squeeze a chicken with the best of them.

Ok so 1 portrait pic a month and best to over size it since it will get decompdiscombobulated on processing.

@cruinne: I don't see how you (meaning moderators) could possibly read every single non-private post. Aren't there like 6 million posts or something ludicrous like that? Though I do make an honest effort as a GM to review (allbeit some are a really quick scan) all posts in our game. I only remember once having actually to take any action.

Yes, as long as you don't click on the new portrait, you shouldn't change it.   Though, you might want to write down the location of your current portrait, perhaps in your Scratchpad, in case you change it accidentally, so you can change back.

Only one portrait per user will be accepted in a single cycle (usually a month).  If you submit three in the same cycle, only one will be accepted.  If you submit more than three, all will be automatically rejected.

FAQs and Things to Keep In Mind:

If you send multiple images, only one (max) will be used.

Images sent in formats other than jpg (especially those that are animated or have transparent backgrounds), or that are smaller than 100x100 may not survive the conversion process, and will not be uploaded if they are blurred, pixilated, etc.

If I cannot tell what an image is supposed to be (even with hints) it will not be used.

One rule for portrait submissions is that you should only submit portraits that you intend to use yourself, personally, rather than libraries of portraits just to fill out ideas about certain categories of need.

If you would like to submit a portrait, just follow the guidelines -- i.e., one portrait submission per cycle per RPoL user, mailed to the portrait editor (actual image, no links), &c.  The Portraits FAQ may be useful.

Since we only accept portraits for characters people intend to play themselves, the selection reflects that.  We don't add portraits just to meet diversity goals, nor should anyone submit them for that purpose.

Makes it hard to run a game set in Asia. There are a lot of martial arts role playing games set in the past. There are nowhere near enough character images to run one. Is there a problem with too many images on rpol? So it serves the purpose of utility.

Apparently, people feel content with the options that are available...or else there would be more of the portraits you're suggesting.  (Not trying to be snarky, it's just an observation.  I was frustrated with the available options for dwarfs in one of the games I was in...until I found the perfect image for my character in a totally different set of portraits.  Just because they aren't where you're looking doesn't necessarily mean that they aren't here.)

I have posted pics on rpol for some time. There is a great selection in some areas, but there are some areas where they are thin. I will try to enlist some friends to beef up this particular ones for a current game.

I play a lot of games set in the first half of the 20th century. There aren't a lot of portraits in the gallery for that period. But when I open myself to portraits in other areas that have the face I want (even if not the whole look), I can have several options every time.

If I'm still not entirely satisfied or want to be more definitive as to my character's appearance, I'll supplement the thumbnail with pics that I can insert into my player description. A lot of people do that.

I meant the players in the game. We will all need to post one for our characters. What about NPCs, who posts those? Can a GM ask for help posting images for NPCs?

Players can submit their own portraits if they so choose, but it needs to be their choice and they should also have the option to use existing portraits if they wish.

NPCs are, essentially, the GM's character and players should not be asked to submit portraits for the GM to use in order to get around the rules.

When I know or suspect that someone is attempting to bypass the spirit of the rule by having other people submit their portraits or give 'in game' instructions or benefits for doing so, I treat the submissions as what they are -- multiple submissions and pick one.

I love RPOL but I think it would be an advantage to have a wider array of portraits avalable. I understand that too many makes it cumbersome, but some of the galleries are pretty thin and it seems to me would benefit from a greater selection. Is there a difficulty hosting a larger number of images?

People send in the portraits they wish to use.  As most people seem to send in 'actor types', it seems that this is the kind of picture they want.

The galleries are hosted (and paid for) by volunteers.  Having a large group of pictures for little more than the sake of variety is not considered a proper use of this user-provided space -- not to mention the time and upkeep.

If you want to use a large selection of images that are unavailable in the galleries, perhaps you should consider hosting them yourself and inserting them into posts where desired using the source code.

Brianna is correct: you can't host on your laptop/desktop, so you need to upload to a service, such as photobucket, picassa, &c., or from the webspace that most ISPs give you with your account, and link from there.

If the person submitting the portrait doesn't specify where they think it should go, then the portrait editor decides where it belongs, based on the appearance of the person in the image.

It will be left there.  As BBR said, pics are uploaded based on their appearance.  Hopefully when the people tagging get to that one, they'll tag it with the identity so that searches will help with any confusion.

While tagging, there have been quite a few incidences when my reaction to identifying  a portrait with Google Images has been 'THAT'S a (Man/Woman)???!!!'.

I tried a few others, but they seem to be working all fine. Just the male ones not.

I've noticed that whichever server the males are on is notoriously glitchy.  Suddenly all the male portraits in a game will be red boxes with question marks in them.  It comes and goes, though, usually pretty quickly.

Looking at the page source, Jase is using the onError event for the img tags.  The portrait calls a javascript function called "np" with "this" (images self reference) as the parameter.

From lib/init.js:
// np: no portrait image error handler
function np(that_img) {
  that_img.src='/images/no-portrait.gif';
}


So basically, if there is an error loading the image, it gets changed to no-portrait.gif.

Portrait FAQs:
Please note that there is a limit of only one emailed portrait submission per person every update cycle.  Your submission should preferably only have one picture.  If your email includes two or three pictures we will choose the one we like best (though none may be suitable).  If you submit four pictures or more the submission will be rejected entirely for the update cycle.


You can resubmit the others in the next cycles if you choose. :)

The portraits are hosted on two different servers, one for the male, one for the female and neutral.  Occasionally the servers will be down, briefly, for maintenance (which is beyond RPoL's control) or your connection to the server will be interrupted due to a broken link in the chain between you and the server (again beyond our control).

Both problems are strictly temporary.

As mentioned earlier in this thread (msg #139), if the person submitting the portrait doesn't specify a location, then the portrait editor will select one, based on the appearance of the person in the image.

In this case the portrait looks like a young man.

Do the new portraits get put on the last page of the category they've been added to? I'm trying to see if my portrait got added and I'm wondering if I can just check the last page of each of the categories to see if it's there.

When your portrait doesn't get posted, is there a process for finding out what was wrong with it? For that matter, is there some way I can verify that my email with the portrait was received?

According to the Portrait FAQ:

    Images may be rejected if they are too small, if they duplicate or strongly resemble an existing portrait, if they are too blurry to make out their details, if they show nudity, or if there are words on the image. They may also be rejected if they cannot be cropped square.


Might any of those reasons apply?

Sorry, but would there be any way to check and figure out which one of those reasons was the cause for my particular image to not be included? I don't mean to be a hassle but if I knew which one of those above stated was the reason I feel like I would be able to re-submit more successfully.

If anyone wants answers to questions like these, then you're going to have to present enough detail so that I can remember, by 1) sending me an rmail with the image imported using the <img src="url of image">, not a link.  ( I will not follow linked images, sorry)

I don't keep emails after the submissions are done.

There is not, sorry.  If I've already added the portrait in the update, or if I've already gotten it cropped, sized and numbered in the current cycle, it counts as the submission.

1 portrait per user per cycle is the max accepted.

If it's only another version of the same portrait already used, then there is no guarantee it will be accepted -- otherwise, go ahead and send it in.

You can ask in Community Chat -- there are a few threads in there asking for help finding pictures or identifying them.

I can tell you that it's been AGES (more than a year or two) since I last removed a picture or moved one.  When I do, there's always a notification put up in the picture's place that hangs around for several months before it eventually gets replaced.

I did submit a portrait (which I had pre-trimmed to 100x100) which does not appear to have been accepted; is there any way of finding out why (hoping to potentially fix any problems prior to resubmission...)?

And I've sent in ones that were not 100x100 because Shannara does a really good job of maintaining the clarity of the pic with whatever Shannara does to them before loading them to the gallery.  If you made it too small it might have been unacceptable for use.  The last one I sent was about over 600x600 and 150 kb but got accepted.

Some other reasons:

1) Not recognizable as particularly anything when cropped to 100x100
2) The 100x100 crop you sent was really something like 75x100, and trying to resize it doesn't work so well.
3) You sent in more than one submission and another one was used
4) You didn't look in all the updated categories -- it might not be where you think it might be
5) You sent it in after I did the last update
6) You sent me a link instead of an attachment
7) You didn't actually attach the submission to your email
8) You didn't put any text in your email, or have emoticons and links and stuff in your signature that got your email caught by the layers of spam filters between RPoL's emails and my inbox, or didn't title your email well.  A lot of factors can cause emails to get 'waylaid' on the way, especially when there are at least 3 layers -- RPoL's spam filters, my internet mail's spam filters, and my inbox's spam filters

If you don't think that any of these reasons, or the ones quoted by Evil Empress, apply, then feel free to send it again.  I'd recommend that you send a larger version and let me do the cropping.  (600X600 or so is pretty reasonable -- no bigger than a desktop background, please)

Not sure if here is the right place.
I found a portrait a few months back I like ncp001 is all it is called. A little Kobold/Rat/Dog like creature in armor with a sword and shield. It has no tags so it does not come up in the search, and it was in a strange place in the galleries (in the wrong place). Is there any want to find it again so I can make it my character portrait later on when I need it? I cannot seem to find it again by browsing.

Also, above is a link to a 'copy' of the gallery.  It also has a recategorized gallery divided up into different classifications that we had at one time talked about using for RPoL's gallery.

As PaulK stated, the letters do indicate the gallery the pic is in.

1st Letter - Male, Female, Neutral
2nd Letter - Creature, Fantasy, Historical, Modern, Sci-Fi  (not sure if I'm remembering them all offhand)
3rd Letter - a more narrow classification - Land Animal, Air Animal, Warrior, Rogue, Business, Casual, Alien, etc.

On October 19 (Third Sunday of the month), I have submitted a portrait. I was thinking updates are done at the end of each month but I just saw it was in fact during the 3rd week-end of each month (As stated in message #8).

As I can't see my portrait in the gallery, can I conclude I was late for this round or should I consider that the portrait has been rejected ?

Actually, the update is now being done fairly close to the end of the month now, depending on my schedule -- generally the last weekend of the month, but that can vary (as it did this last time).

If your portrait was not included in the update, then you probably should re-submit.  The submissions go thru a couple different layers of spam filters, so it's important to remember a few things when emailing:

1) Include some text in your email, preferably your user name and whatever else.  Emails with only an attachment and no text often gets flagged as spam and auto-deleted.

2) If you've got advertisements/excessive stuff in your signature, that's another thing that often makes spam filters grumpy.  Try to send from an email that doesn't include those things.

3) Check what you're sending.  If it's not at least 100x100, it may have been rejected.  If it is not a picture that can easily be cropped square, it may have been rejected.  If it's a portrait that's already in the gallery, it may have been rejected.  If it's a Disney image, or any other image from a source that I KNOW does not give permissions for use, it is also auto-rejected.

4) If you've sent more than 1 image, only one will be uploaded max per cycle.  You will need to re-submit others in later update cycles.

Well, I will resubmit it. It's the second time I send one image and I had no problem the first time (The first one was sent las year).

I don't know what happened this time, maybe it has just gone in your spam folder this time. Thanks for the quick answer. :)

I submitted an image, with my Screen Name in the subject field, in the early morning on 11/29. I was really hoping it would get in on this update. Did I miss the submission cutoff for this month and it will be uploaded next month, do I need to submit it again, or was it rejected for some reason?

The submission arrived after I had already finished the cropping/editing phase so it will be part of next month's submission.

That happens quite often in the galleries.  Always when the last portrait in a particular gallery is in the final slot on the previous page.  So page 13 is just an empty page.  It isn't bugged, and there are no portraits missing from it.

Portraits are categorized based on what they appear to me at the time -- sorry.  If there is a mis-identification, the portrait can still be used whereever it ends up.

After a portrait is in a gallery, that is generally where it will stay until/unless we ever get around to reorganizing the gallery completely.

If I've checked all these (early enough, no text, no signature, square, etc.), is there any way to find why an image wasn't included? I'm guessing probably not, but if there was something that will still cause a problem, I'd rather not just have it fail again.

The last one I submitted was on July 23. This one was on January 25. So that's not the reason. That's why I was wondering if the file got corrupted somehow or if something else was a problem.

Send the email again.  Make sure you have some text in the body of the message and leave out any advertising/emoticon type stuff in the signature.  Also make sure there's a subject in the subject line.

emails go thru 2 levels of filtering -- RPoL's, and mine, and mine is probably set more aggressive than RPoL's.  Everything that the filters mark as 'spam' is automatically deleted.

That may not have been the issue, but it's at least worth checking.

That might have done it. I probably just didn't have enough text between the subject and the body. I had things like FFR in it trying to keep out extraneous text, but not the words that a spam filter would want to see. I sent it again. Live and learn. Thanks!

I can't speak for Shannara, but the portrait FAQ covers some reasons:

    I sent my picture two minutes/hours/days ago!  Why isn't it in the gallery yet?

    Portrait submissions are taken care of as the Portrait Editor has time to do them.  It may take a month to 6 weeks to see a portrait added to the gallery.  If six weeks have gone by and you still don't have your portrait in the gallery, then you might want resend your image.  You should also check your submission for reasons it may not have been approved (duplicate of / similar to an existing portrait, loss of detail when sized to 100x100, nudity, submission sent as a link rather than an attachment, etc.) before resending.

Also, did you check ALL the newly-updated sections?  Sometimes an image, while intended as something specific by the person who submitted it, is interpreted as something else in the process of posting it.  So I may send in something expecting it to be a Male Modern Casual...but the image I chose was androgynous enough that it ended up in Neutral Modern Casual, as an example (or it may have also ended up in some of the other Male subheadings).

Face is right. This month I submitted one that I was sure would be put into either Male Fantasy Rogue or Warrior and it came out as Male Scifi Human. You never know!

I didn't reject any submissions for quality/duplication this go-round.  The only ones I didn't accept came from people who sent multiple submissions.

Something I might should mention based on a couple of submissions I received this month -- I do not 'keep' extras to add in subsequent updates.  I pick one from the email, and then all is 'wiped' for the next round to begin.  Sorry.

I checked the updated sections and did not find the pic.

It was meant to be female spellcaster (or demi-human) on request. But I checked all female sections and did not find it anywhere. It was long white haired, golden eyes and chocolate skin drawn female.

I admit I send in January two emails but I am sure I send the email at thursday last week. I re-send it now none the less.

Just my 2 cents:

If your sending images all ready for Shannara to add, name the file based on the category you believe it fits, like MaleModernRugged_12X.jpg or MMR12X.jpg.  I have always done this and all of my submitted images have always ended up where I expected to find them once added.

I also expect if she doesn't have an obvious reason to reject the image, it makes life easier for her as well while she is sorting.

fmc980 and fmc981 are literally the exact same picture, right next to each other.

I know identifying and getting rid of duplicates isn't always easy or even much of a concern, but I just couldn't help myself in pointing this one out.

Which made me notice most of the newer pictures have no tags whatsoever. Would you like help with that? I'm just obsessive enough to sort through twelve thousand pictures and tag them all.

I think that since the last update I'm having a problem with avatars. Instead of the usual pics, I'm getting a horrible red picture of missing image. Windows 7, Opera. Tried on two different computers, both experiencing the same problem. Strangely enough, I cannot even see the images in the gallery (only blank squares).

This is most likely an issue with one of the links in the chain that connects you to the galleries (which are not stored on the same server as RPoL), and is beyond our control.

Hopefully a helpful hint - if you navigate to the FAQs and click on the RPoL Information link, the second last line will tell you whether RPoL can see the two portrait servers - if RPoL can, and you're still getting the red placeholder, then as BBR says, it's a problem with the link from your end.  :>

Btw, I tried Rpol on Chrome (still Win7), but I had no success there.

Your link to RPoL has no bearing on whether or not you can connect to the portrait servers, as the portraits are at servers in two separate locations, not at RPoL.  So accesssing RPoL with different browsers will have no effect.

I currently see both servers reported as being online.

Which portraits are you not able to see - male, female, or neutral?  Or all of them?

Possibly I'm wrong about the links then - maybe it's your path that's being checked, not the path from the RPoL server (it's your path that will be used to display on your screen, after all, as we link directly to the portrait server - they're not hosted at RPoL).  Happy to stand corrected.  :>  Though for the record, both are online for me too.

Now this is odd. I tried accessing Rpol via different network and all portraits were there. Then I switched back to my usual network and, well, some of them (those I looked at using the other connection) were still there, while others were still unavailable.

It appears to be a problem with my usual Internet provider (I suspect Parental Control that came pre-installed with the router and that I haven't been bothered to disable so far). I can deal with it in one way or another. Thanks for your help. Case closed.

I had that issue the first month or so I was on RPoL, from my work computer. A dozen or so pics were visible, the rest, not. And even that changed from login to login! From my tablet, a library computer, or my friend's computers, everything was there.

No idea why, though, but after a month it cleared up and since all images are visible.

I've had similar experiences with Windows 7 computers, and I'm fairly certain there's something about them that has an issue with the portraits, for whatever reason. I don't think I've ever actually gotten a look at the male portraits from my PC.

In any case, I've noticed that the portraits have no qualms about showing themselves on any mobile device, or when I use a proxy server. Having no real knowledge or problem, I am content to blame my computer for the error and leave it at that..... though some with higher knowledge of such things may argue to the contrary, perhaps.

I have some trouble identifying ethnicity so while I am tagging portraits I sometimes enlist help from associates. I noticed that there's two distinct portrait servers, and when I share direct links from one of them they can't be seen. Could be related?!

At least the male portraits are set up to disallow hotlinking anywhere except RPoL and a few selected sites.

So long as you're accessing RPoL from one of the regular addresses, that should not be an issue.

Alternatively, Skype screen share works just fine. That is what I use now. Thanks for the tool though! I'm sure it'll be useful for something.

If I receive a picture that is too small to make a good 100 x 100 crop, I do use Google images to TRY to find a bigger picture to use for the crop, but that doesn't always work.

Hopefully a helpful hint - if you navigate to the FAQs and click on the RPoL Information link, the second last line will tell you whether RPoL can see the two portrait servers - if RPoL can, and you're still getting the red placeholder, then as BBR says, it's a problem with the link from your end.  :>

Hmm... I don't think this is right. On my cellphone I get all the images and the FAQs: View RPoL Information link shows that both sites are up. On the computer the male images don't show up (female and neutral are fine) and the FAQs: View RPoL Information link shows that site 1 is down. It seems that link is not telling us if RPoL can see the portrait servers but if our computers can, or something like that.

Portrait Update September 25, 2015

Latest update is ready to go, and some have been added.  However, I've hit a bit of a snag with the Female Modern Casual category that will need input from jase.

Basically, the categories are currently capped at 999 portraits per category, and with this update, the FMC category will have 1004 submissions.

Will finalize things once we've decided the best way to handle.

I wanted to see if it would be possible to get the portraits from Banner Saga added to the gallery. They are all really good and can be accessed at the Banner Saga Wiki here: http://bannersaga.gamepedia.com/Characters

If you click on a portrait instead of a name, you can view and download the image from the Wiki. These are all really great and would be a good addition to the gallery here.

Instructions for submitting portraits to be added to the galleries can be found here: /help/?t=faqs&page=portraitsfaq

Note, in particular, that we will only add a maximum of one portrait per month from any individual site user, and you can only submit a portrait that you intend to use yourself.

In addition, all materials related to Banner Saga are copyrighted by its creators, so when submitting a portrait, you would be responsible for ensuring that RPoL has permission to use it.

Is there anyway to confirm that my e-mails are being received?  My past two submissions haven't been added.  Neither one of them is a Disney picture.

I would suggest using another email, and make sure you have a title and some text in the submission.

The only submissions not added this time were those that were duplicates of pictures already in the gallery and a Disney pic.

Submissions go thru rpol's email filters, and then again thru my own.  Also, if you use one of the free email services, make sure it's not one that adds advertising as part of their emails.

It's the same e-mail address that I've used before without problems (it's the e-mail from my internet provider- Charter).  I always put New portrait or New submission in the subject line as well as text in the main part of the e-mail listing my account name and where I suggest the portrait should go.

And as far as I know neither picture is in the galleries.  Nor are they owned or even characters owned by Disney.  One is a character owned by Time/Warner (they own HBO) and I know there are other characters from that particular show in the galleries.  ^_^

I will however go back and comb through the galleries to see if they are hiding somewhere.  ^_^

Is it possible to find out why a submission didn't get approved? It was my first time submitting an image, and I don't know what I did wrong. I tried to follow the instructions but I must have made a mistake somewhere...

thank you once again. I'm glad I wasn't too late submitting a portrait.

i dont know for sure why some portraits are added or not. Most of the ones i submitted have been accepted except for one so far.

If you followed all the guidelines, then maybe you just didnt get lucky or the same picture is already somewhere in the gallery.

Please check all the galleries that had updates when checking for your portrait.

I don't even see emails when I'm working with the images, just the images themselves, so they go where I think they fit best based on nothing more than what they look like to me.

You may know that you intended it to be modern rugged, but it may end up in fantasy warrior ... or the reverse.

At least check all the relevant Gender galleries, and if your picture could possibly be ambiguous, androgynous, etc., then check them all. :-)

Also, something else, please do not bother with suggesting keywords for your submissions.  I'm not doing keywords at all now -- sorry, but I just don't have time/interest.

If you like keywords, feel free to contact the moderators (please copy all) and volunteer to do some. :-)
