Re: Portrait Update 4/27/12

What is the format for submission again?

I can't seem to find it.

Sorry for being ignorant :).

Never mind.  Found it.

Re: Portrait Update 5/28/12

Woof. Just had my favorite artist friend whip up a character portrait for me, which I managed to send in as a PNG that is way over the file limit. Would it be better for me to resend it, or just allow the mighty Portrait Editor to take things from here?

Re: Portrait Update 5/28/12

From the Portraits FAQ (under the "FAQs" link at the upper right):

quote:
What if I can't edit the portrait to 100x100 and 5k in size?

If you send a portrait larger than 100x100 pixels or greater than 5k in size, the Portrait Editor can edit it to fit the gallery requirements.

In fact, it can be better to send one too large than attempt to change it yourself and wind up with one the portrait editer won't, or can't, use.

Re: Portrait Update 5/28/12

In reply to Shannara (msg # 71):

I submitted 8 portraits to portraits@rpol.net on june 12. All 100x100.

But I see now that they are all larger than 5k (from 8k to 18k). I had seen the limit as 50k for some reason. Is this the reason they haven't been added? Is it difficult for the Portrait Editor to reduce the size once I already cut them down to 100x100?

They add new pictures once a month, usually somewhere around the 28th. So soon, with any luck. :D

I believe you are only allowed to submit three portraits per update. Any more than that and the submission is discarded.

Re: Portrait Update 5/28/12

Please also note that only 1 portrait per user per update cycle will be added -- and if you send more than three there is a very good chance that the submission will not be considered at all.

Likely the update will be done tomorrow night or Saturday morning.

We have a large selection of portraits already in the gallery, and the portraits are hosted on space provided by volunteers.  If there are that many portraits that you MUST have, you'll need to submit them one at a time each month, or at least in quantities of 3 (from which a maximum of 1 will be selected).

Oh? I didn't know that. Where does it say so?
It doesn't say so in the guideline for submitting picture (in fact that guideline doesn't mention the 5k limit either):
quote:
Want to submit a portrait? Send your image to portraits@rpol.net
100x100 pixels (or greater), preferably jpeg.
No names on the image unless it's the artist's mark.
    Must have permission to use.
It must be a clear image.
    Must not be a duplicate.

OK, after actively searching for it I found it in the FAQ. It is perfectly clearly spelled out but really, a FAQ should be a place for clarifying things if you have a question. I shouldn't be required to read the entire FAQ in order to avoid violating rules. If this is the intent it should be named "Rpol rules" or some such, not FAQ. At the very least the guideline should refer to the FAQ.

Anyway. What do I do now? Should I resubmit the most important picture then?

or just update the guideline with the appropriate info since most folk are lazy and aren't going to read the FAQ the first go around.

Thanks for all your great work, guys! d(^_^)z

My question was mostly just trying to sound out what the mods prefer, rather than what the rules were. Seems like you guys would rather tweak images yourselves than fix whatever I hand off to you. (Though I was going to delegate the task to the same artist friend, who knows all about DPI and other Photoshoppy things.)

Re: Portrait Update 5/28/12

But if we are relying on people's donated time, wouldn't it take less time to update the rules once than to deal with people not following the (unwritten difficult to find) rules multiple times?

In reply to jazzman831 (msg # 88):

It's not unwritten. It's right there under "How do I submit a portrait?"

ETA: I forgot to link my friend's website when I submitted my portrait (she has a dA page and loves commissions). Should I send another email to portraits, or would there be a better way to get that information to the mods?

Re: Portrait Update 5/28/12

Adding a link to your submission will, if I recall correctly, result in Shannara's spam filter sweeping that particular email into oblivion.  If (and I should underscore 'if') the mods accept info about people doing portraits on commission (they don't generally allow anyone to advertise 'for profit' ventures anywhere else on the site, so I don't think this would get much traction), it would likely have to be via a different route than a portrait submission email.

Re: Portrait Update 5/28/12

I only WISH I could auto filter links out.

What happens with links is that I ignore them completely -- meaning if you link to your submission rather than attach it, the email goes in the 'Rejected' box.

If having credits listed is a requirement for use of the picture, I will likely weigh two things: 1) How many people I think would use the picture and 2) Do I want to take / have the time necessary to add it to the credits page?

Re: Portrait Update 5/28/12

In reply to Nyarai (msg # 89):

Semantics, really. The most likely way to learn that you can submit a portrait is when looking for one to use yourself (why would you need to submit one if you haven't looked at the ones available)? On this page is a very clear box which says "Want to submit a portrait?" and the instructions here do not limit you to how many you can send.

Word choice aside, my point still stands: if you want people to follow the rules, make it easy to know what they are. Hiding them in the FAQs (I've been a member of this site for many years now and can probably count on one hand the number of times I've ever needed to use the FAQs) only causes more work for the mods.

Re: Portrait Update 5/28/12

In reply to jazzman831 (msg # 92):

My very first day on the site (it has only been about a year) I read everything in the FAQs, just so I was familiar with the rules. Several times since then, anytime I was planning to do something out of the ordinary, I checked it. It is because of the FAQs that I know about language groups. I believe that to be a good member of any society, from the global society on down to the little online one we have here, you must know the rules of that society.

Do I think the FAQ and Help sections could be improved? Sure, some things are buried a little. But everything is there, and organized very well.

In real life, they say, "Ignorance of the law is no excuse for breaking the law." I would say a perfect amendment to that for RPoL would be, "'It's too hard to find' is no excuse for ignorance of the law."

Re: Portrait Update 5/28/12

Gah, me and my big, nubby, sleep deprived mouth. :X Time to untangle this mess.

@facemaker: I just noticed that many of the other portrait credits had links to the artist's website but, like a dope, didn't think to include my friend's. I didn't mean to make it sound like a cash-grab. Just trying to make sure anyone who was interested in her art could find it. ^_^;

@Shannara: If your e-mail client has filters, you could just make one that deposits any message containing "http:" (or "https:") straight into your spam folder, or a "Stuff with a Link in it" Folder and why am I still talking after having just gotten myself in trouble? :X
