Apparently, people feel content with the options that are available...or else there would be more of the portraits you're suggesting.  (Not trying to be snarky, it's just an observation.  I was frustrated with the available options for dwarfs in one of the games I was in...until I found the perfect image for my character in a totally different set of portraits.  Just because they aren't where you're looking doesn't necessarily mean that they aren't here.)

I have to agree with the face on this one. I noticed this for the first time when i started uploading pictures of my own. One that I thought was obviously a male mage got put into neutral monsters. Just gotta peek around and see what's in other places.

I have posted pics on rpol for some time. There is a great selection in some areas, but there are some areas where they are thin. I will try to enlist some friends to beef up this particular ones for a current game.

Portraits should be submitted by the players who intend to use them only.

I play a lot of games set in the first half of the 20th century. There aren't a lot of portraits in the gallery for that period. But when I open myself to portraits in other areas that have the face I want (even if not the whole look), I can have several options every time.

If I'm still not entirely satisfied or want to be more definitive as to my character's appearance, I'll supplement the thumbnail with pics that I can insert into my player description. A lot of people do that.

I meant the players in the game. We will all need to post one for our characters. What about NPCs, who posts those? Can a GM ask for help posting images for NPCs?

Players can submit their own portraits if they so choose, but it needs to be their choice and they should also have the option to use existing portraits if they wish.

NPCs are, essentially, the GM's character and players should not be asked to submit portraits for the GM to use in order to get around the rules.

When I know or suspect that someone is attempting to bypass the spirit of the rule by having other people submit their portraits or give 'in game' instructions or benefits for doing so, I treat the submissions as what they are -- multiple submissions and pick one.

It seems like that creates a collection of images that favor leading actors types and offers less of a selection of character types. I love RPOL but I think it would be an advantage to have a wider array of portraits avalable. I understand that too many makes it cumbersome, but some of the galleries are pretty thin and it seems to me would benefit from a greater selection. Is there a difficulty hosting a larger number of images?

People send in the portraits they wish to use.  As most people seem to send in 'actor types', it seems that this is the kind of picture they want.

The galleries are hosted (and paid for) by volunteers.  Having a large group of pictures for little more than the sake of variety is not considered a proper use of this user-provided space -- not to mention the time and upkeep.

If you want to use a large selection of images that are unavailable in the galleries, perhaps you should consider hosting them yourself and inserting them into posts where desired using the source code.

Brianna is correct: you can't host on your laptop/desktop, so you need to upload to a service, such as photobucket, picassa, &c., or from the webspace that most ISPs give you with your account, and link from there.

If the person submitting the portrait doesn't specify where they think it should go, then the portrait editor decides where it belongs, based on the appearance of the person in the image.

Can't you just picture the look on Brienne's face right now? XD

Brienne always wanted to be a man. I guess she finally got her wish. :)

That could be a nice reason to leave her there.
