Deleting Characters and Messages
Does deleting a character also remove any private messages or do those have to be purged separately?

Deleting Characters and Messages
Deleting a character doesn't affect any messages they have posted in the game.

yep... when i delete a  player/character, regardless of  if you  make the NPCs , or  clean them out... there are still the PMs.

I have  kept  PMs   if i use the  charcter  as a NPC, but once the  character/NPC is gobe..i delete the  PMs  as well, since any information and stats  are no longer relevant to the game

In reply to donsr (msg # 3):

I had a previous GM for some games remove himself as a player, and all pms were gone. Is that only if you delete the player, not the character?

For the record the system doesn't automatically delete any private threads, regardless of what you do with characters or players.  Other than when a GM selects to "purge" a thread the only time it'll delete a private thread is if every recipient has deleted the thread from their list.  When a player opts to delete a thread it'll check if anyone else is still viewing the thread, and if not it'll then remove it.

Ouch. Thanks for that clarification. That means the previous GM actually went through and deleted stuff deliberately...

I'm guessing this 'purge' is the 'Remove unwanted threads' command?

In reply to evileeyore (msg # 7):

No... look in the private messages of a game which you GM.  Open a PM which you wish to remove from all user queues.  In the upper right you will find a link labeled 'Purge Thread'  Clicking that will remove the PM from EVERYONE's PM queues, and it will be non-recoverable.

This is distinct from the "Remove Unwanted Threads" command in the GM Menu.  I haven't played with that command yet because it looks like an easy way to lose large amounts of data from a game.  Oddly enough, the Help doesn't really say much about this function that I could find.

The text for this function looks like this:

Cleanup Unwanted Threads
 Leave [??] thread(s)
Remove threads older than [??] month(s)
 Remove all group [?] threads
 [ ] Preserve Public threads
 [ ] Preserve Archived threads
 [ ] Preserve Notices
                          [Cleanup Threads]

Tell me that ain't ominous...

I'd love to hear more about how it's supposed to work.

Not sure how to describe it other than reiterating what you've already posted!  It'll delete the threads as per the option(s) you select.

So... definitely a tool to use very carefully.  Thanks, jase
