How to understand word wrapping?

Hello Friends

I am an enthusiastic new user of RPOL. I hope you can give me some advice. Sometimes posts will show up with words that continue to the right of my screen for a long time. They don't wrap into neat paragraphs I can read at one glance. But sometimes they DO wrap, and I don't know what causes one or the other state to occur.

Without wrapping, I have to scroll over a long way to get the whole post, and it is inconvenient and I have to do it again for the next paragraph.

Is there some setting or something I am missing to make all posts show up "wrapped"?

If it helps I am on Windows 10, and most commonly using Chrome browser version 67.0.3396.99 (Official Build) (64-bit).

Thanks for any help you can give this newbie!

Are there any images posted in the threads that don't wrap properly?  A large image can break the word wrapping by forcing a thread to be extra wide.

Similarly, the <pre></pre> tags will break word wrapping - line breaks need to be added manually for these tags.

Note that either of the above can break word wrapping for your post, even if somebody else has used them in the thread.

I have noticed that character sheets don't seem to word wrap at all, even if that option is selected by the GM.

Which platform are you using?  I know when I post from my phone, if I'm using any of the styled text options, they don't wrap, which is really inconvenient for someone like me who tends to post lengthy dialogue lines on many occasions...

Once I finish entering the text and click 'done' for it, it wraps when it's integrated into the post.  But most of the time, when I have 'phantom wrap issues', where a place that used to wrap suddenly stops, it's exactly what Ron described...someone posted a really large image, which blows the right margin WAY over, and it stays like that until either the image gets resized, or enough posts are made that the image disappears off the current page...then everything goes back to normal again.

How to understand word wrapping?

I've not experienced this yet in Chrome or Firefox, but my games are not heavy on images.

Just anticipating an experiment in this regard, is there a way to constrain images to a particular scale when posting?  (I seem to recall there is... hang on a tick.  Nope, apparently there isn't?)

Short of re-scaling images prior to linking to them, or removing them from the post and replacing with a link to the image (using <a href="URLtoImageGoesHere">LinkGoesHere</a> or something similar) for viewing by other means, I'm wondering what can be done?

In reply to horus (msg # 5):

I think that about covers it.  Of course, until we know for sure that images are causing the issue it may all be moot.

Just knowing that this often occurs with images is a big help for me. Thank you for all the answers!

In reply to facemaker329 (msg # 4):

I've always, Always, ALWAYS had issues in particular with character sheets not word wrapping.   When I first started here, everyone was using XP (or maybe vista).     It's still the same thing going on.

Clarification: It happens most often when you copy/paste something.

Myself, it's from the various system reference documents for pathfinder of late.   Both the official and the unofficial sites produce the same thing.

And you're pasting these into the RPoL character sheet page?  That could be the problem.  There is no guarantee that a sheet copied from an SRD is compatable with RPoL's character sheet format.

I also noticed that neither of the character sheets in the games that you are currently in have word wrapping switched on.

wysiwyg can be a bit on the funny side.   Maybe I'll set up a test game and try a few different formats.

Re: How to understand word wrapping?

I'd be interested to hear the results of your tests, Hunter. I've never been completely sure what the two character sheet options are supposed to look like, and what they end up looking like isn't always the same, even with the same option ticked.
I always tick the 'wrapped' option, but sometimes it wraps to my full screen width, and sometimes it wraps to a window. That can even happen with two character sheets within the same game.

Re: How to understand word wrapping?

There is a way to constrain a character sheet:  use table tags to specify its width in pixels.

<table width=600><tr><td>
{Then place your character sheet here, followed by}
</td></tr></table>

By adjusting the value of width= in the above, one can adjust character sheets and other forms to accommodate a variety of display sizes.

In the thread:  link to a message in another game the posts by Escribblings are most relevant, and it is the technique he or she suggested that I'm using here.

An example character sheet for Fate is given below for reference:

<table width=600><tr><td>
|6! Fate Core Character Sheet |100%
|<6! ID
|<5 Name:   |<1 Refresh:  |
|6 Description: |
|6 (Line 2)  |
|6 (Line 3) |

|<6! ASPECTS |100%
|<6 High Concept:  |
|<6 Trouble:   |
|<6 |
|<6 |
|<6 |

|<6! SKILLS |100%
|>1 Superb (+5) ||||||
|>1 Great (+4)  |!|||||
|>1 Good (+3)   |!|!||||
|>1 Fair (+2)   |!|!|!|||
|>1 Average (+1)|!|!|!|!||
|<6! STUNTS |
|<6 |
|<6 |
|<6 |
|<6 |
|<6 |
|<6 |
|<6! EXTRAS |
|<6 |
|<6 |
|<6 |
|<6 |
|<6 |
|<6 |
|<2! PHYSICAL STRESS (Physique) |!1|!2|3|4|
|<2! MENTAL STRESS (Will) |!1|!2|3|4|

|<6! CONSEQUENCES |100%
|<3! 2 (Mild) |<3 2 (Mild) |
|<3! 4 (Moderate) |<3.2 |
|<3! 6 (Severe) |
</td></tr></table>

This produces:

Fate Core Character Sheet

Name:Refresh:
Description:

SKILLS

Re: How to understand word wrapping?

Thanks Horus. Putting that code into one of the 'wide' character sheets does bring it into a smaller window, but it doesn't explain why there is a difference to start with - why one sheet puts itself into a window, and the other only does so if I force it with your command.

A lot of that probably has to do with column spanning.  I will contact you in-game and we can work this without further derailing this topic.

If it concerns how post/sheet features interact with word wrap... that would be completely on topic for the this thread, yeah?

I'm just being cautious.  If what we develop turns out to be worth reporting here, yeah, we'll be back with it.
