The storehouse is a place you all know, over the years you have all been here to take on the heroic rat slaying quest. The rat infestation have never been this bad though and it is with a sense of forebodeing you enter the storehouse and descend into the cellar. There are no rats here and at a first glance everything is as usual: crates and barrels holding the keep's stores. Then you see it, or rather first you feel it, a light draft and then, behind a large crate that has been moved: A 3-foot high hole in the wall leading to some dark, dank, foul-smelling place beyond.

As soon as you state your actions I'm going to start mark off turns in the table, take a look in the Time-keeping post for more details. Let's see how it goes!

Max followed as quietly as he could. Just wearing leather, he wasn't too bad. Sword in hand and shield ready on his left arm, he stayed back a bit just in case. He was a front line fighter here, he was fairly skilled as well. He was ready. This was not going to be much fun though. He had his pants tucked into his boots and covered with his armor.

Moving down into the cellar near the rear of the group, Malus had a burning torch clutched in his left hand, while he had a dagger ready in his right. His staff was currently stowed across his back. He cast his gaze about the room, watching for anything else out of place or any danger while Clay examined the dark hole leading into unknown places.

The silence is deafening at first, then you can hear the faint trickle of moving water. Then you also hear the faint squeaks and moving of small feet. Larger than an ordinary rat, you're sure, and more than one. The smell emanating from the hole is horrible, decomposing feces and damp stone.

You crawl through the small passageway, having to stoop or go on your hands and knees. The opening looks like it's been done recently and it debouches into -you realize- a sewer. Someone have gathered a gangway of rough planks so you can make your way out onto the stone walkway without having to step into the foul sewer water.

To the east is a 5' wide canal of murky sewage, as far as you can see in the light from Enigma's staff.

The walkway continues south beside the canal and you can see another passage 15' feet to the south. The stone upon which you stand is dark and very slippery with years of built up slime.

Anyone that walks along the walkway will slip and fall into the murky water on a 1-in-6 every turn.

Feel free to ask questions if you need anything clarified.

Marching order (front to back): Max, Clay, Enigma, Malus, Niall

As you slowly make your way down the slippery walkway, Enigmas staff suddenly go dark and what light remains come from Malus' flickering torch... you think. As Max reach the corridor to the east he can se a faint flickering light disappear right around another turn further down the corridor (not the side passage, really further down from what you can see by the map). He doesn't have time to reflect upon it though as suddenly he sees the glimmer of small eyes and a pack of four giant rats rushes towards you from 20 feet away.

Max, roll for surprise - on a 1 or 2 you're surprised and no one can act in the first round. The rats aren't surprised. Next, everyone declare if you're casting spells or moves. Otherwise, someone may roll for initiative. I rolled a 1, if it's equal roll again, otherwise you win.

Since your torch is in the back it's too dark to see anything in the side passage the rats are coming from but you can see fine on the walkway beside the canal.

To the south the walkway ends in a wall and water disappears into the mouth of an underground tunnel. In the tunnel to the east you can see it continue as far as you can see by the flickering torchlight and 20' ahead there's also an opening to the south. Max remembers that for the briefest of moments he saw another flickering light disappearing by the far end of the eastern tunnel, but it is now dark an silent.

He turns towards you, blocking the plank bridge to the passageway where you came from. "Now, if you don't mind, stand still cause I've a blade with your name on it."  Enigma gasps audibly, her cool all but vanishing.  After taking very quick and decisive stock of the situation, the Magess invokes a word of power at the two buffoons.

Invoking fear (Carcass Crawler Issue #1, pages 18-19) on hostile men.
Not sure if Game Master, or Player, is asked to roll for success in this case, as Mage abilities function like Thief Skills.

What's your target? One of the men or the more general 2d8 HD option? Range is 240' so you'll target pretty much everyone in the sewer with the second option.

In reply to GM (msg # 60):

I thought I could choose those I was trying to affect, as the spell is specifically targeted, rather than being like Fireball where it just explodes in a sphere and is friendly fire.

Sleep:

“The spell may target either:
 1. A single creature with 4+1 Hit Dice (see Hit point modifiers in the Ad-vanced Fantasy Referee's Tome).
2. A total of 2d8 Hit Dice of creatures of 4 HD or lower each.”

Fireball

“Flame streaks towards a point within range and detonates in a 20' radius sphere.
Damage: Creatures caught in the fire ball suffer 1d6 damage per level of the caster, with a successful save versus spells indicating half damage.”

I was trying to just target the two men, if Sleep works differently in OSE, I’ll just hold off on it.

Going back and forth to figure out who does what OOC is of course fine but if you actually wait IC you're going to loose your action.

Enigmas spell fizzles unfortunately so that's her round and it doesn't look like there'll be a sleep spell coming.

The two men stand roughly side by side between you and the passage to the cellar, 5' or so from waterway leading east. No one have closed to melee yet but they're about to.

What do you do?

Carbos and Shank, round 2

The squat fellow avoids Clays dagger and thrusts with his short sword but slips in the muck, swears and misses the agile thief. Max comes up beside Clay and runs him through.

Then two things happen. The first thing is that Xalten crawls out from the passage to the cellar only to see his friends beset by the assassin. The other thing is that another man -dressed in robes- steps out from behind the corner to the waterway, raises his hands, mumbles a few arcane words and a magic missile shoots out from his hands to strike Niall straight in the chest (6 damage)! The figure then start to turn, seemingly to run away.

Xalten, just having cleared the passageway sees the back of this robed assassin a few yards ahead. The figure doesn't seem to have noticed you.

Nice! Two assassins down but one to go.

Timing was everything. Why Xalten had chosen this moment to appear from the cellar, he could not say. What he had been doing down there, he would not say. What he had planned now, was anyone's guess. But some robed wizard has just emerged from shadows to shoot a magic missile at his friends, and that would simply not do. The elf stepped forward quietly, sword in hand, and sought to stab the figure in the back - but the figure moved at the last instant! Did he get him?

13:27, Today: Xalten rolled 10 using 1d20+2 with rolls of 8.  attack roll, sword.

Combat over! That's actually a hit, the mage had terrible AC (10, so you'd hit on a 9 or more) and low HP.

That's another 10 experience for each of the assassins for a whopping total of 30 experience points to divide among you. I'll start tallying it all in the journal thread in time.
