Welcome to the Call of Cthulhu. I figured we can use this thread as a general chat outside of the game.

Here are the ground rules I've come up for this play-by-post. I call them "ground rules for harmonious gameplay:

1) The expectation for this game is that players will contribute a post the works towards furthering the story being told (by describing actions, narrative, conversations, etc) daily. While this is by no means a hard rule, it should be the goal of all players to adhere to this rule.

2) When posting, IC (for in-character) and OOC (out-of-character) should be used to differentiate between character and player dialogue.

3) Players are encouraged to provide colorful descriptions of their characters actions. While saying "I shot the monster" to help create a better atmosphere for the game a post like "still reeling for the terrifying appearance of the monster, William shakily raises his pistol, firing off a few rounds hoping to hit something vital".

4) The game and its various "scenes" will be structured around a calendar system. The start of each new scene will be accompanied by a date and time to establish the progression of the game. Once the timeframe of the scene has run its course, the next shall be established with a new date and time and all post will be considered final.

5) Limit the number of actions described in a single post, please keep it to a reasonable number. Shouting a warning, moving, and discharging a firearm are all reasonable within a single post. Fighting an entire battle is not.

6) Dice rolls will be kept to a minimum. Small deceptions and persuasions won't have to be rolled for and their success will be determined by the keeper, with bonus points for creativity. Actions that could potentially alter the characters standing with an NPC will need to be resolved through a skill check.

7) This site only sends notifications of new post within the game on a daily basis (you can set the time they send it in the preferences) so be proactive about checking the site.

8) Try to keep activities in a post to within the current scene. If the scene is set in a bar actions should stay within those confines.

9) Stats and scores will be largely kept on and "honor-system" basis. It will be up to the player to keep things like their health, sanity score, and money up to date.

10) And of course the most important rule of all: HAVE FUN!!!

Hey dudes,
I'm thinking I'll end my hook in a few posts and leave it to telling NPCs that I'll see them for poker night and you guys can traverse that way the following day? Any other ideas are coolio as well

What are ground rules for NPC control, etc? I remember our old pbp game had a bit of a problem with a player flexing his NPC control a bit too much.

I'd like it to be a rule of thumb that NPCs can be used to facilitate PCs actions as long as they don't change the course of the game. A good example would be the poker night: Mike can ask Shelly and you can write her response, that's perfectly fine. But players shouldn't give agency to NPCs: Mike asks Shelly to return the ring to Mt. Doom. Two weeks later she returns. NPCs also shouldn't be used by players to glean information that they do not ALREADY know: Mike asks Shelly who is the murderer, she replies the old man in the lighthouse. If you'd like to use NPCs in your posts please keep it relatively benign storyline-wise.

Where would Clarke need to go to find information out about cigars or rare imports in Arkham?
