Little Best Chinese Cafe and Room Escape Entertainment, along with most of the other (non-magical) buildings in the area are boarded up and abandoned, but breaking into them is trivially easy for you guys. Feel free to describe your characters entering one or any of the buildings, just do me a favor and be vague about the details until I can set the scene.

Also, this doesn't really affect anything, but my desk top died yesterday, before I could back up a lot of the pre-writing I did for this campaign. This is... disappointing, but also kind of energizing because it means I can try to make NPCs and plots and stuff a little more interesting. I'm confident I'll remember the good parts and forget the parts I phoned in, I guess, and I can take more time with the whole endeavor.

Still, we're lucky I posted what little of the Consilium NPC list I did already. It would have been disheartening if I lost everything, but at least the big political players (which, to be clear, are not necessarily the big plot players) are set.

Incidentally... I now need some help fleshing out NPCs, heh. Do me a favor: go ahead and PM me a local Idaho Consilium member. Those of you lacking a Mentor merit or some type of mentor-figure in your background, that will stand in for your "mentor", the aforementioned shmuck who vouched for you in Idaho. You will also get a Beat apiece!

How comfortable are you with computer hardware? Most of the time, when a laptop dies the harddrive is recoverable. I often physically move the harddrive from my old computer into my new one when I transition machines.

Ugh, that sounds horrible ST.  I've lost campaign notes to a hardware failure before and it's kind of a terrible feeling to know you'd written an idea down and be utterly unable to get to it.  Thankfully desktops are even easier to work on than laptops so with any luck you'll be able to salvage some bits.

Yeah, if you can get the hard drive out there are cool hard drive to USB cables that would let you turn your old hard drive into a giant USB, let you recover the stuff.

Alternatively, check out a sweet program called SpinRite, really good at recovering dead hard drives. It's expensive though.

That's true, the hard drive itself is likely fine. The issue is more that I'm very, very broke at the moment. I don't know enough about computers to salvage the stuff myself, and it will be a while before I scrounge up the cash. So, not insurmountable but sucks for right now.

I appreciate the ideas and sympathies though, guys.

Kierkregaard, would you mind writing up a character description in your cast page? I'm currently imagining your character as an unpainted G.I. Joe and it's a bit off-putting :P

Best of luck with the harddrive for what its worth. If you happen to live in Vegas, I can provide the technical skills. I was a computer technician before I finished law school.

As for the character description, he looks exactly like an unpainted G.I. Joe and you obviously read my mind...or maybe I'll get to that shortly.

So...just to get the ball rolling on one of our big upcoming issues, what are everyone's character's goals?  If we can find a common thread we can more easily pick out a theme for the cabal and thus begin tackling the hurdle that is our group name.

To start things off, Stele wants to become an authority on ghosts in the region.  He wants to gain the kind of acclaim that will bring people to him on matters regarding the soul.  Getting enough status to be allowed to access the really good records and research would be nice too.

Beorn wants to find a group of people he thinks are worth of protecting, and to become a Banner Warden.

Sorry to interrupt, feel free to discuss goals and stuff OOC. But in the meantime, important info on the Hallow and building repairs:

Right now, I'll tell you that the building is relatively safe. We'll stay in the moment in character, but I'll tell you now: no ghoulies in the attic, nobody attacks you while you get the lay of the land, etc. No immediate threats. Since this place is essentially yours, I wanted to take a moment to break down exactly how that works mechanically, and then ask where you guys want to go from there.

This is a Hallow **, and the building itself (even though it's run down with a broken door) constitutes a Safe Place *, due to its fairly remote nature and the fact that it provides at least extremely basic shelter.  Feel free to add this to your sheets.

The place is not an effective Sanctum because it's still at least partially exposed to the elements, which screws with concentration, meditation, and the like. Repairs and renovations would add further dots:

Repair the door, with heavy duty locks: Safe Place *
Weatherproof the storefront: Sanctum *
Restore the second floor: Safe Place * and Sanctum **
Finish the basement: Safe Place * and Sanctum *

The Safe Place contains no native traps. You can add traps, libraries, hidden ritual rooms for increased Sanctum dots, panic rooms, personal bedrooms for each of you, or whatever else you want, but they're just that: additions. You have to work for them in character and/or buy them with Experiences as per normal.

We're talking specifically repairs here, and mostly to the structure.

These repairs need to be done in order (it makes little sense to try to finish the basement when the second floor is still in danger of falling in). Since they're repairs to an existing structure you guys just kind of inherited, you can buy the Merit dots at discounted Experience: 1 Experience per repair. This applies even if you're just using magic to fix the building; it's still an 80's montage of you reparin' stuff, so it charges an Experience. This is assuming you're doing the work yourself, of course.

You can instead throw appropriate Merit dots at the problem. Calling in Allies or Mentors to arrange repairs for you, or just picking up a Sleeper work crew with cash Resources, can also buy these dots for the group. However, since they're increasingly complex tasks, they grow more expensive when "bought" this way (instead of the flat 1 Experience per repair): the door can be "bought" with one appropriate Merit dot, while weatherproofing costs two dots, and so on. Any dots spent on these repairs (with the exception of the door, which is quick) will tie up these dots for months. Mentors will be offended or annoyed at doing such a menial task for you, and refuse other favors for a while. Resources will be tied up in paying for ongoing labor. Allies and Contacts will have their own cash or manpower tied up in the endeavor, and so on.

And, just to be clear, you can undertake any or all of these repairs. This is a sandbox game; if you want to leave it a ruined dump that's your prerogative. Obviously, only the first repair (the door) can reasonably completed before your meeting with Ascelpius tomorrow. But it might be good to figure out your intentions from here on out.

Well, from an in story point of view, Beorn is good to help with hard labor. As myself, heck yeah we could make this a rockin' sanctum eventually.
I have a beat currently, are you guys looking to focus on getting this place set up, or do we want to get it livable and then focus on personal character growth?

Would be good to get the door replaced. Beorn has a car and one dot of resources. Probably enough to buy a door and locks from home hardware and get it installed before the end of the day.

:P Anyone want to volunteer for cleanup duty on the first floor? I can tell you for free, a bit of scrubbing goes a long way.

I have a few ideas about what we might do with the space IC that I'll bring up next time I post, but xp-wise I'd be glad to allot my first point or two into getting the group sanctum up to snuff.  Having a reinforced fallback point is always nice.

In reply to Beorn (msg # 28):

Soren has 2 dots of resources and he would be willing to tie them up for a few months to see the place repaired quickly.

If Beorn is contributing one dot of resources and Soren is putting in two, that should justify repairing the door and weatherproofing the storefront. I do not think it is worth the investment to go much beyond that anytime soon.

I'll put a dot of experience in so that the second floor is fixed up. It will be good to have somewhere to rest if we have someone keeping watch.

If we all invest our first xp into the sanctum we can get all the repairs done and have it fully functional.  Then we can start saving for our personal projects an advancements.  Since we seem to be using group beats we don't even need to worry about someone not having their xp done when the others do.

I'd prefer not to institute a posting order. In my experience, nothing kills a play-by-post game quicker.

I'm looking for a rate of about a post once every two days or so. So if nobody else posts by then, you can feel free to move the action along at that rate.

Hopefully that'll work out.

Sounds like a good rate for me.  Just didn't want to drown people out.
On the other hand, damn.  Did it again.  Supernal Realms, would you mind going into the dice roller and changing the default to World of Darkness nWoD?  It makes rolling for things a little faster and saves me being a moron every time I get caught up in counting factors and forget to change the system.

Sorry it's been so long without an update, but I was waiting for posts/reactions from other players.

Since it's been a few days at this point, Beorn, I'll say you're good to post fixing that door if you want. Everyone else, let me know if there's anything important you want to do before the meeting with Ascelpius. Please also specify where you're staying; if you're squatting or camping out in the restaurant or going home.

Hey guys! Sorry this stagnated. At first I was just waiting for others to post... but then the proverbial feces made contact with the air circulation device for me in RL.

I'm currently breaking up with my live-in girlfriend, and all the life disruption that entails. Suddenly not sure where I'll be living in December and January...

That, and I'm honestly still having a little difficulty wrapping my head around the mechanics of Mage. I think the best thing to do is call a hiatus. Let's try this again in 2018. Hopefully I'll be able to recover my pre-writing by then, too.

Sorry to hear that. I hope your personal life improves. And I'm very sorry about my lack of response. We lost an associate at my firm and I have been swamped. We have a new associate that is about to start and when you decide to pick the game up again after the hiatus I will be eager to get back into it.
