V: Into the Catacombs

You're in a dank chamber with rough stone
walls and a damp, oppressive atmosphere.
This large chamber seems to have been
partitioned off into three storerooms, each
piled high with crates and jars; each storage
area is about 20 feet broad and 40 feet
deep, and the areas are separated from one
another by walls of red brick.

To the south, a low shaft leads deeper
into the catacombs. There is no noise except
for the distant drip of water, a faint
scurrying, and the burning of your torches.

V: Into the Catacombs

One of the small areas contains grain barrels.  The grain is long gone.  The barrels themselves are rotting and show teeth marks from some large creatures.

Another section has piles of old cloth and leather.  It all looks badly rotted.

The last section is piled high with boxes and crates in a haphazard fashion.  There are no visible labels on the boxes.

To the South is a hall.  An old rotting tapestry blocks the view further.

OK, That last section looks like a dumping ground of stuff, be extra careful sorting through that area.

Lam goes quiet every time he sees someone concentrating or looking heavily at an area or box, ect. part in waiting for their discovery and part in case he has to react to a threat.

The tapestries appear to be acting as doors and the stop the cold getting closer to the building. If not, since there are no tables or chairs, it would be difficult to assume they are just for decoration

Rebeccas words made sense to him, why would cold or breeze eminate up unless there was something immense further on.

Original decorations? Why not doors though, the tapestries would muffle noise but so would a door to some extent.

We should look behind each one. Same with those crates that, unlike the first few room, were not rotting or broken

Re: V: Into the Catacombs

Tath did a search around the area but found nothing.

Sal's best guess is it would take a lot of work and tools to make them passable.

Jory sees nothing unusual on the tapestry.  It's a simple hunting scene.  When he pulls it aside, he feels resistance and hears a click.  Suddenly, a portion of the roof caves in over everyone between the tapestries.

(Everyone in the area roll a save vs. death.  No, it's not save or die.)

Not near where the others were investigating, Deniv hears the rumble and almost rushes forward to help.  However, he quickly realizes he would be caught in the cave-in as well.
He drops his spear and covers his face as the dust cloud comes rolling outward from the deafening collapse.  He kneels with his hooded cloak drawn arounf him and covering his face until he is sure that the debris and much of the dust has stopped falling.

He goes back to helping, shaking his head.  He may find himself in the position of acting like a thief or a grave robber, but that does not mean one has to lack manners.  Courtesy, propriety, and respect are valuable commodities when operating a tavern, even when it comes to those with whom you are familiar.  Of course, the quality and state of their current clothing leaves a lot to be desired.  But that is no excuse in his mind fir such comments.

Lam chuckles at Rebeccahs comment, I too wish for our group to not have to continue to have you hem away your clothing, ducks his head, not that you are not um but well you see, loosing your clothing is not a favorable thing to happen and um

then at Sals comment, Sal, careful with your jests for Rebeccah would have to start hemming your own cloths or worse, mine so best be careful my friend with your injury occurrences

then chuckles in thought of course Sal our goddesses laws is such that I can be your healer and lay my hands on you instead and smiles at Sal then turns and continues watching the group.

Then following the jesting with Einlian and Sal, Sal, I think a fine red gown with frills and long sleeves will suite you best especially if you want to be bandaged all the time.  Plus I'll have you be point man instead of Jory which will help that out and grins, but I will still Lay my hands on you for your healing so no worries there. and grins again

Thinking there is more then one way to keep this group together and survive this ordeal so a little tactful reactions instead of a hard line one should steer the groups course better too and the more we can jest and have fun the better we all will be.

Looking over to Rebeccah, green would suite you fine and ... um then turns and continues watching for trouble

Re: V: Into the Catacombs

The first cubby is crammed packed pretty tightly.  Some of them seemed to have been forced into position.  So far, none of the boxes hold anything useful.  If they held anything, they had long rotted to unidentifiable rubbish.

As Sal, Edward and Tath begin to search through the second supply, a loud squeak is all the warning they get as some rats the size of dogs swarm out and attack to defend their nest.

The well is dark and deep, but the sound of rushing water can be heard echoing up the shaft.  An old bucket sits nearby, but the rope has long since rotted away.

(The party seems to have honed their reflexes from their ordeal and react before the rats can attack. I believe there is three, but I don't have the book right now.)

Rebeccah chuckles at Sal's humor as she lays a hand on Daniv's shoulder.  "It's ok, Daniv.  The darker the circumstances, the darker the humor.  I think we could all use a good laugh."

"I prefer blue," she says, gesturing towards her dress.  Not only was it torn short well above her knees, it was also covered in mud, blood, and dirt.  "But I wouldn't blame you for not being able to tell.  Though to be honest, I really don't want to wear anything found down here in a tomb."

She jumps in surprise as the rats appear.  Her first arrow flies wildly off course, but her second at least hits close.  (At least it looks like a miss.)

Re: V: Into the Catacombs

(13 just gets in there for Rebeccah.  Rolled damage.)

Rebeccah's 2nd shot is right on target.  Her arrow skewers a large rat, killing it instantly.

Sal quietly creeps up on the rats.

Lam rushes in to engage the rats.  He swings away at one of them, shaving off a few hairs.

Tath runs his target through with the spear, killing it.

Daniv fires his bow, but his arrows all miss the mark.

Edward swings clumsily with his club.

Kerkrin uses his heavy crossbow, pinning a rat to a crate.  It squirms in vain as it dies.

A rat snaps at Edward, but he is able to keep out of reach.

The last rat ducks under Sal's knife attack and clamps down on his leg, piercing deep.  (-3 HP)

The heroes maintain the initiative and continue their attacks.

(Leozaren never had stats.  He died of exposure before the temple.  You still have Edward (druid) and Kerkrin (Cleric) to command.)

The floor has cracks running through it and is buckled like there is some kind of pressure.  The floor here is not cut out of the stone like the rest of the catacombs.  Each stone is a cut piece laid in a pattern.  Why here of all places is a mystery.  No mechanism to suggest a trap is noticed.

Daniv spent a second too long on the odd stonework.  The pieces under his weight dropped out from beneath him before he could react.  Lam leaps forward with reflexes he didn't know he had and grabs Daniv by the arm before he can disappear.  The opening goes down deep into the darkness.  The sound of rocks landing in water can be heard.

With a grunt and a moan from the shock and sudden yanking of his entire body from the force of grabbing onto Daniv as he fell, Lam quickly comes to his senses knowing his quick crazy and desperate grab at Deniv succeeded.   He now uses all his might while setting his feet to keep himself from also going over with Daniv while starting to pull him out.

Between gritted teeth Hold on Daniv, By the goddess I got you and while holding onto Daniv he leans his entire body back in an effort to slowly pull Daniv up enough for him to get a grab on the side helping to be pulled out.

Daniv, Grab the edge,  the solid edge and help me pull you out, there, good.

Lam feels someone grab his sides and braces him from falling Thanks, still gritting his teeth as he pulls Daniv out, We cannot loose another one of us so easily.

Once Daniv is securely up and out of immediate danger, Lam almost collapses, gadzooks that hurt, my, my shoulder feels like rubber and oddly my ears are ringing.

Lam turns to the one who helped grab him, Sal, and smiles, thank you for your quick help, i, i was afraid my heroic effort would only get the two of us killed and with great physical effort, Lam pats Sal on the shoulder Thanks .

Once recovered, Lam smiles up at Rebeccah Rebeccah, I only reacted to the danger but thanks. I hope I do  not have to do something crazy like that again. Lam turns to Daniv  Daniv, I think we shall have to rethink our crossing, right.  taking a deep breath you good?

Then Lam turns to the group - suggestions?  Ideas?  There is water way down there, plus the well probably leads to that water.  Maybe a fresh underground lake or maybe a way out if we could safely get down.

Hearing the first ideas, Lam sighs and shakes his head in thought, way to risky but crossing is as risky.  Looks to Einlan already across Einlian, How wide do you suppose this bridge is and how far across does it go?

Einlian croaches so low he is almost laying down and looks across to see if the collapsed 'Bridge' goes underneath his colleagues, then leans over to check under his position.

Rising slowly again, the nimble young man gives his best guesses.

If we rope off or you throwone end over, we can try and cross, alternatvely, one of us could decent and see whats below in a safe manner, being lowered whilst climbing.

Set fire to a bit of cloth and drop it, that should show us how deep it is.  I'll take a quick look around this side for anything useful.

Einlian, really 10 - 12' long and encompassing the whole passageway across.  wow, OK, you made it across because of a lot of luck and balancing out your weight so. hhmm,

Lam looks up at the ceiling, then the walls for any crevices or rough surfaces and even a mini ledge of sorts they could use to help cross.

OK, what stuff did we uncover back in the rooms we could build a makeshift bridge or even a rope type bridge out of?  Those tapestries hanging down, how strong are they?  those sail ropes we made?  Even if we can build a short ramp sturdy enough to try jumping across?

Lam look back over to Einlian Einlian, did you find anything over there to help us across?

After Einlian responds:

OK, thanks Einlian, now We need a quick inventory here to see what we got to make it across? Lam chuckles softly or even down to possibly swim out.

Scratches his head a moment then looks to the group.

Let's drop a small burning torch or piece of wood to see how far down to the water and maybe reveal anything as it falls.  Lam looks for someone to hand him a burning piece to drop then

Einlian, when I drop this look from your side to see what you can see, distance down and if it reveals anything on the way down. then drops it down and watches.

With his idea of dropping burning cloth taken up by Lam, he hoped that the water below may hold a safer way out, he could swim but wasn't sure of anyone else, he had only seen a few of them come out of the boat swimming when it was grounded, others bobbed or were quickly helped to the shore.

Lam sets back a moment in thought talking out loud, OK, all that is back there is Rotted wood, so no short ramp sturdy enough to try jumping across?  using rope and jumping across, 10-12 feet is a long way to jump but having the rope on if you fall and we hold the other end may help you from falling into the water?

Lam sighs, moves back to the group

OK I think it appears quick soft movement is called for.  it is about 10-12 feet long, starting from where Daniv fell through and It's as wide as the hallway so it is a big space.   like A bridge about rotted out so if you try to spread your weight out like balancing out your weight on more then one stone and move somewhat quickly but not at a hard pounding run one might be able to cross. shrugs his shoulders and continues  do not stand too long on one stone.  Not sure crawling across is best either but that spreads the weight out and not stopping, crawling on different stones as you make your way across so no full weight on any one stone like a spider or bug may work best. Not sure if there is one path solid enough to cross but ..

Looks to the group, any other ideas?

The wire is thin and light and could be useful again for setting other traps.  The crossbow is old and worn and barely useful as a weapon.  It's damage and accuracy will be reduced.  The bolt fired was the only one in the room.

Sighs, Ok group, two things we can do, send over to the other side a few lighter quicker people to check out the well or we send someone down a rope to check out what is below the denigrating bridge Daniv almost fell through or a bit of both searching.

Looks to the group, I think though we need what rope we have to search both places so let's try the roping down the bridge to see what is down there, then cross and try the well.

Looks for confirmation as he starts heading back the way they came.

OOC - I assume/guess we searched all of the area beyond the bridge - if not Lam would have the group check that area too then if nothing found head to the bridge,

As the noise from above gets louder, the search gets desperate. Something had to be here.  There was nowhere else to go.  Dani moves his hands across the wall until he brushes across a crack that was almost too small to feel.  His fingers trace the crack and discover a button.  Once pushed, there is a click and a portion of the wall pushes in to reveal a hidden passage.

As Lam pulls his bow out, Rebeccah, you and I will have to be last with our bows to cover the group if the Orcs/goblin break through before we can get out.  Sal, your help to possibly close this once we are through, even if just to hide in here til they pass further into the caves.

The air in here is different.  It is more dank, more foul, but still breathable.  There are no indication of traps or anything having moved through here in a great while.  After closing the door, the group moves slowly through the long tunnel.  No traps are noticed or tripped.

Finally the tunnel opens up into a large room, around 80 to 90 square feet.  There are three large niches in the East wall.  It looks like there may be a fourth one that had been bricked up.  The first one is empty, but the other two are occupied.

Re: V: Into the Catacombs

Kerkrin eyes the South wall.  "That wall ain't natural.  T'is covering something up."

Daniv, Einlian, and Sal figure the brick wall is pretty normal.  There are no secret latches or traps that he can spot. There is a plaque on the wall:

Here lies Prince Horedel
Brought Down by Illness
In the Twentieth Year of Viledel's Reign

They determine nothing short of force is going to open up that tomb.  They do remember Keestake talking about the boy being interred with his boat.

As Tath and Lam approach the niches, they can see the bodies of the Sea King and his wife lying upon their slabs.  The bodies are eerily fresh.  Though the wounds of their deaths show, they otherwise have no sign of rot or decay.

Re: V: Into the Catacombs

Rebeccah's arrow strikes the queen's arm.  She doesn't even flinch as she staggers forward.

Einlian rushes in to engage the queen, pummeling her to little effect.

Daniv aims true, striking the king in his chest.  Though it would have felled a normal man, the Sea King gave no more reaction than the queen with the arrow in her arm.

The dead monarchs strike back clumsily.

20:33, Today: Man in Black, for the NPC zombies, rolled 1 using 1d6.  initiative.

20:32, Today: Man in Black, for the NPC queen, rolled 1 using 1d20.  attack.

(Heroes are up again.  I can't believe I just rolled three 1's in a row.)

Noticing the attacks have little effect, Sal searches with his eyes for somtheing htat might stop them.
"Maybe they are looking for something, or a missing part of themselves, or, not sure."
If possible Sal will try to dart past them, to get a better look into their coffins.

If you needed a roll of some kind.

Hearing the call, Einlian moved to strike the king from behind, maybe that would show if they could react or not.

((ooc: Einlian rolled 8 to hit {unsure if +2 or +4 to hit for rear attack} 3 damage))

Re: V: Into the Catacombs

In reply to Einlian (msg # 263):

Lam basically yells at the zombies King Viedel, great sea king, your goddess Athena has commanded us to leave the island in peace, we seek only to leave, show us the way out as the goddess decreed it to be and we leave your island and your treasures to you alone to have.  Pauses a moment to see if that registered and there is any change in the zombies

As he pauses Lam hops to make a difference by praying to his goddess that she will help in some goddess way to show or guide them out and stop the sea king and his wife from attacking and to show the group out.  Oh goddess Athena, your humble servant asks for your guidance and holy might to show us the way out and allow your dead here to help us out so they can rest forever more with you.

If still nothing Lam will plunge his spear again into the Zombie  (Lam has the +1 protection from evil if they are evil)  hoping that helps him defend against the zombies if it comes to that.

Re: V: Into the Catacombs

Sal runs around the slow moving king and into his crypt.  The chamber is full of mostly useless and moldy goods that were likely only valuable to the king in life.

Rebeccah fires a shot into the chest of the queen.  Though the arrow would have felled her in life, it has no affect on her now.

Tath swings with all his might, severing the head from her body.  Whatever necromancy gave life left her then as her remains fell to the floor.

The King's corpse swings his mace at Lam, ignoring his reasoning.  (or the zombie gave a crushing blow to his attempt at diplomacy.)

Lam takes a crushing blow from the dead king.

20:18, Today: Man in Black, for the NPC zombie, rolled 7 using 1d6+1.  damage.

20:17, Today: Man in Black, for the NPC zombie, rolled 18 using 1d20.  attack.

20:21, Today: Man in Black, for the NPC zombie, rolled 6 using 1d6.  initiative.

(Now the dice decide to go the other way!)

(Just to be sure there is no confusion, you are doing damage when you hit.  )

Seeing nothing that could help the party behind the zombies, or at least Sal isn't smart enough to put the puzzle together, if there is one.  watching one fall, He swings into action.
With his dagger in hand, he approaches from the rear. Selecting an advantageous spot to stick his dagger in the back of the zombie.

"Thud."  His dagger gets stuck in some thick material in the creature, inflicting what he assumes is no damage, BUT now announcing to the zombie, "Hey sal is behind you!"
His sneak attack is now foiled for the future.

Rolled a 4...assume miss.

Daniv stands staring at the attacking undead, seeing no apparent effect from their attacks on them even when they do hit.  However, seeing the Sea Queen's head removed from her shoulders rallies him enough to attack again.  He waits to see if the Sea King turns its back.  As soon as that happens, he fires his bow at it.

Re: V: Into the Catacombs

Einlian takes his chance, seeing others ahead and behind the king, he moves to the royals side. If they were to discover why the undead move as they do, he realised both hand would be better.

Feeking in position, the moment arrived but he got slightly distracted by the maneuvering of others and strikes with both hands simultaneously.

It felt like one hand missed as the king swayed, allowing the other hand to his firmly.

Punch Attack #1 = 5 with damage 1 (it's a miss anyway)
Punch Attack #2 = 18 with damage 2 (that's more like it)

OOC Not sure but ouch those dice really  hate this group.

Lam, stumbles back from the ferocious hit he just took, yelps in pain and stabs at the Zombie king again hoping to make a better presence with his attack while trying to defend against the Zombies attack al the while yelling, We need to send these Zombies back to the dead and quickly

Note sure but if Lams hit but I forgot to add +1 to damage for Lams strength if he indeed did hit.
