Doubt they'd allow that Dorak. The way it is, you basically trade your action to ensure your melee action isn't wasted with a miss. If you could trade one action for two melee actions it'd likely be considered way too strong. But then you never know what kind of crazy feats are out there!

The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

Ok everyone. Francis has told me that he wishes to drop the game. Not because he doesn't like it. But he cannot reliably post
His cruise ship duties are increasingly sending him into areas without internet.

What I'm going to do

I'll npc him through this encounter

Then I'm not dropping him. I'll just let him stay in town for this next adventure or until Francis says he can reliably join, because I know we all enjoy having Frank around

I am however bringing a 6th in to the group.

Tanien Garaotaum elvish Scout

So he's a merger of our previous druid, previous ranger, previous elf Archer....

I think he will fit in fine and fill that much needed 6th player niche.

And once Francis can return to reliable posting he will be more than welcome to return to the game and at that point we will have 7 like before.

The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

Arell and Nomerendal have heard of Idris Eaveswalker. He's a haughty well known Elven Ranger part of an adventuring group
He made Falcons Hollow his home because he fell in love with a local Kitani, the clothiers daughter several years back.

They married had a daughter Kimi some 14 years ago. For a long time he'd go adventuring for a few days/weeks and return. The clothier died. Kitani took of the family business. But Idris wasn't for settling down . Adventuring was in his blood...and so was womanizing. Kitani kept pulling him out of taverns where he was enjoying his second favorite pastime...the first was hunting werewolves.

Most recently after a big blow up Idris left to go adventuring...that was 2 years ago.

His daughter Kimi ignores the bar rumors and idolizes her dad fancying herself a heroic adventurer too. She's 14.

Splitting what up? I don't know what you're talking about...

Crossbow would be a great choice, but the character build I've worked out doesn't really gain Nomerendal anything by using the crossbow instead of an appropriately sized longbow. Besides, I just took a level of fighter for it, so I'm kinda committed. Dread deals with enough of my shenanigans with characters that I'd like to keep Nom simple, for his sake. ;-)

@GM - Should we RP out getting Nom a bow upgrade, or shall I assume such a thing would be fairly available in the high market, ie a "longbow for a youth" or a human-sized shortbow...?

As for the coin, who'd like to be treasurer? The floor is open for nominations....

Tell me, do you have the Strength to warrant a Mighty Composite bow? If not, crossbow is better IMHO. Light Xbow has 80' range increment vs Shortbow for 70', Heavy Xbow is 120' range opposed to Longbow's 110'. Light Xbow does d6 damage, Composite Shortbow does d4. Light Xbow has 19-20/×2 crit, Shortbow has 20/×3 crit.

Dorak can be fair as treasurer, and can carry a bit without slowing much. I plan to buy an anvil and make shields and eventually armor during whatever downtime we might have.

No, in fact Nom's got a -1 STR modifier, he's also SMALL size. With proficiency from a level of fighter, Nom's looking to step up from shortbow to longbow. Longbow doesn't have the Move action reloading time of a light x-bow, and shoots farther. Granted he's taking the -1 damage with the longbow, and the crit range is one less, but keeping our little fellow mobile (especially since he's got the wand of healing) seems better than having him hit a little bit harder. Masterwork would offset that -1 damage and give him a little boost to hit. I've just got to figure out if Nom's got the jingle for it or not...

Our last treasurer left us before updating the Treasure thread after our first adventure, and I don't remember if we got any coin for the Well Cleansing or not... seems like we did, but my character sheet only reflects my left-over startup funds.

GM:
The discussion about what to divide see the group after the meal making it to the general store where they sell the majority of the gear they obtained. Only a few items are kept. Large amounts of coin are exchanged for lower weight gems of varying value.

I'm not finding any amounts so far... :-(

We should have 1000gp (100pp) in the kitty at this point, plus whatever we gleaned from the first adventure.

Masterwork helps you hit. It doesn't improve the damage. But....if you take a whetstone to each arrowhead and sharpen it, it does +1 damage on the first hit the arrowhead makes. And since an arrowhead only makes 1 attack before the arrow is ruined, you lose nothing.

Can't right now.

Sleeping kobolds have a black box around them.

Slaves are gold Kobolds
Jardregg is a blue Kobolds
Kibbo looks like an adventurer and is next to Jarrdreg.

The warriors look like warriors.

I try to use tokens that look like combatants or non combatants for clarity.

Which direction is his front? I realize this is information for Arell to address and the rest of us won't know it unless he says something, but we would be able to tell which direction he's facing, right? Anyway, if that's too meta, just ignore.

Gave it back to War Domain Cleric in 5e... In my home 5e FtF game, our Life Domain Cleric took a feat to get heavy armor proficiency. Then a few levels of Ranger. Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

Well heck fellas. How are you all...?
As for how the brothers Grimm are ..

It's been a hell of a few years what with the pandemic and more issues than you can shake a stick at.

This last year has been the worst. Both parents passed away. Totalled s car. Got Covid. Lost jobs retired yet still working part time to augment my social security

I haven't chatted with my brother in a few months but he was going strong last time I did; though he did say because of his promotions it was highly unlikely he'd ever go back to playing online...lack of time.

I however have been getting the itch.

Reading through the PF2 core rulebook now. Near done...I also picked up the Crown of The Kobold king for PF2...

And have been lurking lately...pondering.

Would you guys consider it?

If not no harm no foul...we did just poof on after all.

If yes then I'll escalate things and look for the balance of the group...it would be PF2.

Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

Sorry to hear about your folks GM. It was a weird couple of years. Glad to see you coming through however. Hopefully your brother's content with his work load. Construction is tough. I'm much happier now that I've changed careers. Tell him hi for me next time you talk.

I've been playing in a very slow PF2e game. It's taken me a bit to get the new rules sorted out, but I really like it so far. I honestly struggled with PF1e when I first joined this game, though through the years I got it sorted as well. Anyway, I'd love to try making Nom in 2e. It'd be nice to start at 2nd or 3rd level, but I don't know if that fits with the Kobold King adventure.

I'd certainly be up for it!

Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

At this point, honestly, I prefer PF2.  Less swingy, less likely to screw up character creation.

Admittedly I'm not an experienced player by any means, but given how bad DnD 5E screwed the pooch recently, I'd basically rather play ANYTHING ELSE.

I got a bunch of PF2 books on sale a year ago, and picked up Abomination Vaults as a birthday gift to me.  So, if we don't want to run Kobold King again...we have options.

Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

My thoughts...

Options:
1. A. Take over from where we left off going after the kids. (They've been completely cut out of the rewrite to Pf2 ...but it's be easy to put em back in)...if you recall you were looking to rescue 5 children who were looking to become adventurers after seeing you all.

So party would be 2nd level....not my favorite idea

2. I'd do a narrative where the kids were rescued. And it's been 3 years since that occurred and news has come of something bad  in the depths of the monestary....

Naturally the people who know it best are approached.

Party would be 2nd level still.

3. Play something totally different.

Though right now I only have Crown of the Kobold King...though it wouldn't be difficult to get something else

After looking it over it's different enough to be fun ..and since we didn't even get past the first couple rooms....and it's now a 5 level dungeon. With lots going on...

In reply to Dorak Fellhammer (msg # 211):

The role playing aspect is the same of course. Since I've been playing in every edition since the dawn of TSR...my take is...it's probably the most balanced version ever. It also lends itself more easily to role playing...having a 3 actions in a round economy instead of  2.

There's plenty that changed...

Ive only played in a few games of it. I like it.

Now...you don't need any combo of certain classes to succeed...you could have an all fighter party and do well.

Pathbuilder is an absolutely free character creator where you could play with rebuilding Dorak to get an idea.

Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

By all reports, PF2 works great at level 1 (certainly better than DnD 5E which takes until level 3 to actually get going).

However, I don't think Arell actually 'works' in PF2.  "Champions" in PF2 focus on Defense (actually somewhat to their detriment) and Arell is very much offensively focused.  Now this can be mitigated (the 'Free Archetype' Variant rule would help tons), but I'd be stretching mechanics to fit the idea in my head, rather than making a character suited to the mechanics.

So, option 1 doesn't really work for me.  Option 2 is a little better.  The three-year time skip, we could justify changes in equipment and combat style (and Rolf growing to mount size :D).

However, I, personally, am interested in option 3, "something different".  Higher level would be nice, but not necessary.

Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

True enough. The Champion is sufficiently different.

Ok so let me break things down a little differently.

1. Continue with PF1 from the point we left off. Prep time...time to recruit 1-2 more players.. ready to roll now

2. Fast forward 3 years changing to Pf2. Starting kobold crown past the intro.

Prep time probably 3-5 days for change overs and recruiting

3. Starting something new...whether PF1 or 0F 2 probably 7-10 days to recruit, make characters and prep game.

Let's have a concrete vote on this.

I never thought you guys would all  chime in. Thank you. Really. Thank you.

If I need to vote to break a tie I will.

When you vote ..vote go 1st (3pts) 2nd 2pts 3rd 1pt..and it's ok to say no to one of the choices meaning you wouldn't be interested.

If you choose the 3rd option say which version and maybe a couple of ideas to run.

3. Option 2, PF2e

@Dorak - I kinda thought the same thing at first, the book is hefty and rules are scattered all over the place. With Pathbuilder and a 2e cheatsheet, you'd be good to go fairly quickly. I'll dig through my files and see if I can find a good one.

Also, I haven't been keeping up on Paizo 2e releases, so I don't know what is available for fun adventures. Having never GMd either version of PF, I don't know what conversions take. But keeping things interesting and fun for Dread will trump my preferences anyway.

Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

No as to how difficult PF2 is...after reading most the rulebook I can say...

A. It's not more difficult, in fact it's probably less 'mathfinder' than PF1

B. I didn't see rules 'everywhere' . They just restate the rule in locations that's referencing them. It's all fairly intuitive.

C. There are huge changes though.

First AoO--- class feature for Fighter only. Champion and Monk CAN  get the ability through choices.

Second. 3 actions.
3 characters. Example
Wizard. 1. Recall knowledge. 2. Cast cantrip. 3. Move
Fighter 1. Raise shield. 2. Strike. 3. Strike at -5
Druid 1. Command Companion. 2&3. Cast 2 action spell.

As an example

4. Lots of character differences with each class.

5.mental adjustment for encumbrance using bulk.

6.mental adjustment for less coinage and less costs of items ..

Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

One more big change for spellcasters.

Spells don't automatically match levels.

Example: if you know Fireball (3rd level spell). You cast a 6d6 fireball.

It won't get more powerful.
To get more powerful you have to learn fireball 4th level...then damage increases to 8d6.

You can get rid of the 3rd level in your spellbook as a wizard and replace it with something else if you want.

It's called 'heightening'.
Cantrips and focus spells auto heithen to half level round up.

Cantrips unlimited casting. Focus spells 1xevery 10 minutes. Additionally each class can use signature spells...1 per level...that get auto heightened.

That may seem difficult to get, but it's actually
Pretty easy to grasp.

It's not what you're thinking.

In pathfinder currently you have the same system. A character is proficient in types of armor and types of weapons.

The only difference now is there's varying degrees of proficiency. That provides a different modifier.

Regular equipment has no rules regarding that.

It doesn't limit any character, in fact...they typically can do more than before.

Here's what I'd suggest...

Go to pathbuilder and build 3-4 characters and see how they look. Before you make an opinion

Dorak- first ...make sure it's pathbuilder for PF2 you downloaded. The first screen asks if you want to start a new character or load an existing character.

the 'word salad' that initially shows up after that is merely enabling what you want to utilize for building the character.

No to battlezoo material. Yes to adventure  p path material.

As for characters being build able and playable from previous editions...

Since I've been around since the first inception of D&D I can say ...EVERY edition changed things that I had to adjust to...

Yes humans do not get both versatile and an extra feat...nor do dwarves get every thing they used to.

This has been modified sufficiently.

Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

The initial method of creating a character has you choose first..an Ancestry...(Race with some more delineating things) then a Background (the background fleshes out details of your character. It can be tied to an AP, but it doesnt have to. Yes you can view it as 'traits' Plus some fleshing out ie...it helps decide your initial statistics.

Then your class will put the topper on this .

Can a character from 1st ed be created...yes. will it be 100% the same? no. (but as I said...nor was it ever when going from 1 edition to another.)

as to whether a background will be utilized in the game....besides helping to flesh out your concept of the character, its always been the purview of the DM to make sure that happens....in otherwords...thas my yob mang (in best ricky ricardo accent...or for more modern folks, Spartacus in the bird cage.)

Depends on what you mean by build able and playable I guess. If it's the concept, definitely.

- there is no slayer class true, but fighters and rogues are capable classes in 2e, so don't need unchaining or 'fix' classes
-medicine (2e for heal) is absolutely a vital skill in 2e and non magical healing is useful, possibly even the preferred way of out of combat healing. Far far better than heal in 1e even with skill unlocks
- monstrous races (ancestry and heritage in 2e - yes the terminology drives me nuts to) are available and probably more prevalent in 2e. Though I haven't seen monkey goblin. If it exists it's probably more balanced than in 1e.
-intimidation is an important part of the 2e game but free intimidates on hits are probably higher level than enforcer feat. The feat 'you're next' does give free intimidates when you kill something and I think is available to level 1 rogues
- balance in general is VASTLY improved. It's hard to make a useless character, but it's also hard to create something overpowered with just the right combination of carefully chosen feats.

Your slayer might be a hobgoblin fighter with a focus on feats you build up medicine

Your rogue might be a goblin (?) Rogue with a sorcerer dedication (kind of like vmc in 1e - it's the only way to multi class in 2e) with a focus on feats to improve intimidate. Rogues still get a ton of skill ranks but unlike 1e they're actually good with skills that aren't disable device and stealth

Of course they wouldn't be the same characters but they'd do similar things.

2.Extinction Curse--- (queue 'Must let the show go on)isle of Kortos. Players are members of a circus.

4.  Abomination Vaults. (Dungeon crawl on isle of Kortos---3 modules takes to 10th).
5. Fists of the Ruby Phoenix  ---i don't think we should run this with us being relatively new to Pf2. It's 10th+ 3 modules ...martial arts tourney
6.Strength of Thousands. Set in Mwangi Expanse. Defending an ancient magic school.
7.Quest for The Frozen Flame. Vikings riding Mammoths...nuff said.

9. Kingmaker...the PF2 version.
10. Blood lord's In Geb. That kingdom of the dead....undead is the theme.
11.Gatewalkers (just coming out.) Paranormal investigators.

Very interested in playing...

Strength of Thousands --Supposedly very good, and heavy on the RP
Quest for the Frozen Flame --Also very good, but in a different way.

Moderately interested in...
Agents of Edgewatch...played in cop games before, they're fun.
Abomination Vaults...again, I have this one, but it would be nice to see it from the players' side.
Kingmaker...never played, but considered picking it up myself.  Be nice to see how it goes.

Im going to try what Sara suggested, create a Hobgoblin fighter who leans into Medicine, see where that takes me. If I like what I see, I'll give it a go. But I will probably need a lot of explanations at first.

Trying to use builder but I'm running into roadblocks. What is significance of Red feats as opposed to black feats? How do you find out about prerequisites for Feats, cause they ain't listed?

There are a lot of unofficial conversions of 1e aps to 2e. I'm playing in a tyrants grasp, seen hells rebels, war for the crown, lots of others. Since unofficial, quality probably varies.

Kingmaker of course is official conversion. I'm playing that too. It brings in a lot from the video game too. It's been good so far, but we're just early into it (made level 2)

Red means you don't meet prerequisites. Feats are strongly level gated in 2e (minimum level required is the number on the right) so first level characters don't qualify for a lot. A lot of class features have been converted into feats which allowed more character customization, but also loads of class specific feats (rogue feats, cleric feats, champion feats, and so on) so more feats you can't qualify for

So it's not a matter of 'you need this' to qualify? It's 'you need to be this level'? How do you find out when it is available? The builder doesn't list that.

I'd be against king maker (since I'm already playing it, but could be convinced) and the high level one. Any of the others sound great to me. Or as I mentioned find a conversion, there are a lot out there.

Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

I've spent the day looking over APs and trying to find conversions. Not as much easy as it looks.

I think after much deliberating, that I like The Extinction Curse the most. The plot is intriguing.

Would I lose anyone if I chose it?

Come one, come all! Humble performers become leaders of the Circus of Wayward Wonders when tragedy strikes. But as these heroes lead their motley band of performers and roustabouts around the Isle of Kortos, they uncover a sinister plot to exterminate life from the Starstone Isle. The dead god Aroden may be gone, but his legacy lives on, as do his old enemies who would destroy the wonders he raised from the sea. Spectacle meets savagery as the heroes strive to stop the Extinction Curse!

And the description on the first module...

The Show Must Go On (1 of 6): The Extinction Curse Adventure Path begins! The Circus of Wayward Wonders has just arrived in the remote town of Abberton, and the player characters are the stars of the show! When the ringmaster turns up dead, the fate of the traveling circus and its entertainers hangs in the balance, and the heroes must scramble to put on a successful show and find the killer—all at the same time! Investigations only lead to more questions, and the heroes find themselves center stage in a dangerous, prehistoric plot that threatens not just Abberton, but every inhabitant of the Starstone Isles!

Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

not necessarily...you could probably use Sleight of Hand (or whatever it's called in PF2) to juggle...Acrobatics to do trapeeze/walk tightropes.  Athletics for feats of strength, animal handling to tame lions...

I'm definitely in.  Does anyone have their heart set on playing anything in particular.

For my part I've had a wizard character lying around for a while that might work...actually plays up the whole "stage magician" stuff with a focus on illusions.

Although now that I think of it, a Lion-taming Ranger might be fun.

I was the barbarian lass before, makes sense to be some sort of strong woman.

Though probably not a barbarian, I don't like the 2e barbarian much. Maybe a monk/wrestler type?

Are we going to do the free archetype variant rule (please say yes... please say yes... please say yes...)

Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

I just finished a remake of Nom as a 2e character... Looks fun as a face character in a game with lots of RP. I have a shield fighter I like to play for more hardcore battle/dungeon type stuff, and I think I'll whip up a gunslinger or magus for fun depending on what direction we decide to go.

Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

Wtf? Builder will not let me choose the skills I want, will not let me build up the stats I want (he is a Healer but it saddles me with -2 Wisdom), I cannot increase the Fighter's Strength beyond what the Options give me as modifiers, and I cannot equip the character as there is no place to state what he has to spend. All in all it looks like the fucking cookie-cutter system that I LOATHE from 4e.

Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

Hobgoblin has -2 to wis, in 2e. Didn't they in 1e? I never really played the monstrous races much. But just like most races in 1e get either one boosted staff, or two boosts and a penalty, most in 2e get either two boosts or three boosts and a penalty. You might prefer human two free stat boosts?

Not sure what problem with strength is. Level 1 strength is capped at 18 (just like it was capped at 20 on in 1e) but there are far fewer ways to increase stats

Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

Doesn't Pathbuilder have a point buy somewhere? I'm on my phone and it doesn't like that site. I'll look when I get home tonight.

The program seems to want you to select things in a particular order and then other options unlock. Also the various tabs on equipment let you Give an item rather than Buy it. I found that easier and I'll adjust my coins when I'm done.

Takes a little fiddling. I'm notorious for wrestling programs to make them work in ways they were not intended. ;-)

In 1e they had +2 Dex, +2 Con, and no ability reductions. As for the free boosts, I was not able to choose it for myself. The program chose it for me. And 8f there was a point buy I never saw it.

Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

Yeah, the races in 2e I think are much more balanced. I think in general it all is. Like I said a few posts up, there is a much lower optimization ceiling and a much higher floor - it's hard to make a character that flat out sucks, but hard to make one that just dominates.

Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

Bounded like 5e, but it appears as if Paizo actually pulled it off.

I find that projecting a build is easier. I have made spreadsheets for my 1e characters. I do like the mental workout of creating min/max, multi class 1e characters for specific adventures. Took me years to get Mathfinder figured out.

I'm pretty burned out on 5e though. My FtF group hit it pretty hard for three years before I moved, and now we play via discord with systems like FATE or Ironsworn as a break. We did a Fiasco one shot which was a blast online.
