Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

Just a post for support for both our GM and for the rest of you. Life's got a way of ruining our fun sometimes, and though I don't know any of you in person, I just thought to post here to let Dread know we haven't forgotten about him and not to feel bad or embarrassed for having to step away from the game for a while. We understand. Hang in there!

Still here. It seems as if the Brothers Grimm must have had some RL happen. Hope they're ok...

Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

I'm still here just swamped Mom in the nursing home I go see her every other day, working 6 days a week 10 to 12 hours a day until the end of the month. and now my 84 year old dad was sent out to live with me, he's got some dementia issues, add the normal honey do's from the wife and I do have time to sleep on Sundays. hope fully every thing will slow back down after the first. I really hate RL, I need a job where they pay my to role play then life would be grand.

Surprised to see this again too.

Saw that paizo is putting together a book version of this adventure.  I've been debating whether to pick it up as I still kind of want to see what happens from this side of the table.

Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

Well heck fellas. How are you all...?
As for how the brothers Grimm are ..

It's been a hell of a few years what with the pandemic and more issues than you can shake a stick at.

This last year has been the worst. Both parents passed away. Totalled s car. Got Covid. Lost jobs retired yet still working part time to augment my social security

I haven't chatted with my brother in a few months but he was going strong last time I did; though he did say because of his promotions it was highly unlikely he'd ever go back to playing online...lack of time.

I however have been getting the itch.

Reading through the PF2 core rulebook now. Near done...I also picked up the Crown of The Kobold king for PF2...

And have been lurking lately...pondering.

Would you guys consider it?

If not no harm no foul...we did just poof on after all.

If yes then I'll escalate things and look for the balance of the group...it would be PF2.

Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

Completely unfamiliar with PF2. Is it much different?

I warn you, if it's like going from D&D 3.5 to D&D 4, I'll be staking you out over an ant hill and pouring the honey.....

Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

Sorry to hear about your folks GM. It was a weird couple of years. Glad to see you coming through however. Hopefully your brother's content with his work load. Construction is tough. I'm much happier now that I've changed careers. Tell him hi for me next time you talk.

I've been playing in a very slow PF2e game. It's taken me a bit to get the new rules sorted out, but I really like it so far. I honestly struggled with PF1e when I first joined this game, though through the years I got it sorted as well. Anyway, I'd love to try making Nom in 2e. It'd be nice to start at 2nd or 3rd level, but I don't know if that fits with the Kobold King adventure.

I'd certainly be up for it!

Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

At this point, honestly, I prefer PF2.  Less swingy, less likely to screw up character creation.

Admittedly I'm not an experienced player by any means, but given how bad DnD 5E screwed the pooch recently, I'd basically rather play ANYTHING ELSE.

I got a bunch of PF2 books on sale a year ago, and picked up Abomination Vaults as a birthday gift to me.  So, if we don't want to run Kobold King again...we have options.

Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

My thoughts...

Options:
1. A. Take over from where we left off going after the kids. (They've been completely cut out of the rewrite to Pf2 ...but it's be easy to put em back in)...if you recall you were looking to rescue 5 children who were looking to become adventurers after seeing you all.

So party would be 2nd level....not my favorite idea

2. I'd do a narrative where the kids were rescued. And it's been 3 years since that occurred and news has come of something bad  in the depths of the monestary....

Naturally the people who know it best are approached.

Party would be 2nd level still.

3. Play something totally different.

Though right now I only have Crown of the Kobold King...though it wouldn't be difficult to get something else

After looking it over it's different enough to be fun ..and since we didn't even get past the first couple rooms....and it's now a 5 level dungeon. With lots going on...

Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

Mostly just saying hi. Sorry to hear about your folks, glad you two are doing well though.

I've played a little 2e is better at some things worse at others. I'd be game to look at something new, really any of those options would work. I don't remember much from the old game lol. Something about a gelatinous cube?

Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

In reply to Dorak Fellhammer (msg # 211):

The role playing aspect is the same of course. Since I've been playing in every edition since the dawn of TSR...my take is...it's probably the most balanced version ever. It also lends itself more easily to role playing...having a 3 actions in a round economy instead of  2.

There's plenty that changed...

Ive only played in a few games of it. I like it.

Now...you don't need any combo of certain classes to succeed...you could have an all fighter party and do well.

Pathbuilder is an absolutely free character creator where you could play with rebuilding Dorak to get an idea.

The gelatinous cube was the last encounter we had before the bottom fell out.

It was the 2nd encounter in the first dungeon level...

Let's light some fires and slash some tires!

I've been wanting to see a 5th level or higher game, but getting more people familiar with 2e is great with me. I'm happy to continue the story or convert it to the newer one. Whatever is easiest and scratches your itch GM!

Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

By all reports, PF2 works great at level 1 (certainly better than DnD 5E which takes until level 3 to actually get going).

However, I don't think Arell actually 'works' in PF2.  "Champions" in PF2 focus on Defense (actually somewhat to their detriment) and Arell is very much offensively focused.  Now this can be mitigated (the 'Free Archetype' Variant rule would help tons), but I'd be stretching mechanics to fit the idea in my head, rather than making a character suited to the mechanics.

So, option 1 doesn't really work for me.  Option 2 is a little better.  The three-year time skip, we could justify changes in equipment and combat style (and Rolf growing to mount size :D).

However, I, personally, am interested in option 3, "something different".  Higher level would be nice, but not necessary.

Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

I too vote "something else". Preferably with some 3pp content or Path of War or Spheres.

PF2 just doesn't have enough content to whet my appetite.

Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

True enough. The Champion is sufficiently different.

Ok so let me break things down a little differently.

1. Continue with PF1 from the point we left off. Prep time...time to recruit 1-2 more players.. ready to roll now

2. Fast forward 3 years changing to Pf2. Starting kobold crown past the intro.

Prep time probably 3-5 days for change overs and recruiting

3. Starting something new...whether PF1 or 0F 2 probably 7-10 days to recruit, make characters and prep game.

Let's have a concrete vote on this.

I never thought you guys would all  chime in. Thank you. Really. Thank you.

If I need to vote to break a tie I will.

When you vote ..vote go 1st (3pts) 2nd 2pts 3rd 1pt..and it's ok to say no to one of the choices meaning you wouldn't be interested.

If you choose the 3rd option say which version and maybe a couple of ideas to run.

My vote

1st choice: option 1

2nd choice: option 3 (PF 1E)

3rd choice: N/A

I recall looking briefly at the PF2e PHB when it came out. The layout style put me in mind of D&D 4e. I put it back on the shelf and ignored it since then.

Re: The Darkwood Inn II (OOC)

My votes:

1.  Option 3, PF2e with hopes of bumping to level 5+ fairly quickly... (hey, shoot for the moon right?)

2. Option 1, PF1e

3. Option 2, PF2e

@Dorak - I kinda thought the same thing at first, the book is hefty and rules are scattered all over the place. With Pathbuilder and a 2e cheatsheet, you'd be good to go fairly quickly. I'll dig through my files and see if I can find a good one.

Also, I haven't been keeping up on Paizo 2e releases, so I don't know what is available for fun adventures. Having never GMd either version of PF, I don't know what conversions take. But keeping things interesting and fun for Dread will trump my preferences anyway.
