Around Town in Silverwood

[The game is officially started! In this thread, feel free to send your party here and there around town. To make life easy for me, if you could include your party's location in brackets at the top of any posts in town, I'd appreciate it.

Most activity in town is public knowledge. It's not a large town, and word gets around quickly. If you have some business to attend to that you don't want others to know about, use private lines to me to conduct it. Your party location, however, should remain public unless you have some means of sneaking everyone around.

For issues of my sanity, let's not split the parties in town, unless there's a character off doing down-time stuff in one location while the rest of the party conducts business.]

[The Oak and Eagle]

The Common Room is crowded tonight. Lots of prospective adventuring parties are present, and the local crowd is also high due to the novelty factor. Torches flare along the walls, and the staff is busy taking and delivering orders. A trio of minstrels sit in the far corner, playing music that can barely be heard above the chatter of conversation.

Tacked to the wall just inside of the door is a notice:
The Lord Mayor announces that the Towne Ransomme is DUE in one month. If any brave souls can donate 250 coins of gold to the town treasury, the normal TAX upon recovered loot shall be waived for that party for one month from date of donation.

Under that official notice is a note scrawled on a greasy, torn piece of parchment:
Bounty on Kobold heads. Inquire at Granite Cup.

[Sorry, DM. Backed up a step.]

[The Granite Cup]
A quintet of people mill around near the entrance to the Granite Cup. Standing is their best option, as they lack the proportions to sit properly at any of the tables. While the three humans just look around curiously, the fourth -- an elf -- is visibly uncomfortable, while the last just hangs back, relying on their hooded cloak to avoid notice.

The sixth member of the group strides across the taproom. Being a dwarf, he finds the decor rather homey and comfortable. He waits on the barkeep, then inquires about the posted bounty on kobolds.

[The Granite Cup]

A ragtag group of adventure-seekers sits as comfortably as possibly in chairs that are too small for most of them, squeezing in so as not to be impolite to the others here. A thin halfling with bushy blond hair, stands and speaks to the others.

"Well, boys... we all saw the notices at the Oak and Eagle. We need to get into that dungeon and make a big score. Ask about the kobolds, Gordon."
He points to the barkeep, and the party's dwarf gets up and clangs his way over to the bar in his brand new plate mail.

"Ronny, find us a porter." The party gnome nods, rises, and looks around searching for someone specific.

As the party finishes their cheap drinks, the dwarf Gordon buys an ale at the bar, asking, "What's this word about a kobold bounty? My group might like the sound of that."

Meanwhile, Ronny the gnome stops here and there with an ale in hand, asking, "Who's up for a one-day job into the dungeon today?" (He's hoping for a gnome porter, but he'll hire anyone with any infravision over a human.)

The rest of the party waits while the halfling mutters to himself. Folks can see a pair of human clerics, both unkempt, but wearing clean little pins depicting The Raven. The elf and the dragonborn both admire the dragonborn's new sword, and the half-orc looks like he just wants to kill someone. They sit with their empty cups, waiting for news from the others.

Drogo and the other halflings of The Shire party live it up, and enjoy a few drinks bought for them by patrons for good luck. Asking around about the ruins, you hear a few unlikely stories of a ghost that steals souls in the ruins of the keep.

Relf Bluetooth, the half-orc who runs the local outfitters' shop, gives you a bit of advice. "The main dungeon entrance is in the center of the castle ruins. You can't miss it. But it's not the only way to enter. If you poke around the ruins a bit, you'll find other ways down. Oh, and watch out for slimes and molds. They can be deadly! Haha!"

[The Granite Cup]

A wizened old dwarf with an eye patch, Ivanus the Slow, tends bar. He owns the joint, and makes a mean mushroom souffle to serve up with his famous bedrock ale. He grins as both the adventuring dwarves ask about the kobold bounty. "You vant to know about kobolds, yes? Zey are a nuisance, yes? Zat man, a King's Knight, offers bounty."

Looking where Ivanus indicates, you see a well-dressed dwarf, young, with a jaunty feather in his peaked cap, sitting by the fire. He ushers both dwarves over to him an offers both a drink. He speaks in the cultured human accent of the capital, rather than the local dwarven dialect. "The king has sent me to Silverwood after receiving a petition. Kobolds, I'm told, have been leaving the ruins of Yeffal's castle and raiding the surrounding farmsteads. The king has charged me to offer a bounty of one platinum coin per kobold head returned to me here at this inn. If some means of dissuading the kobolds from raiding the locals can be reached and peace held for one month, the king offers a reward of 100 gold to each member of the party that successfully manages this feat."

When Ronny the Gnome makes his offer, a dwarf and a gnome both approach him. The dwarf looks tough as nails, and introduces himself as Garthmond. The gnome, who introduces himself as Airk von Rumple, seems young and eager. "Vat sort of job do you have?" Garthmond asks.

One of the two dwarves to first hear the offer simply nods and offers a muttered thanks as he leaves. He rejoins the overly-tall group waiting at the entrance, and they all leave together.

The dwarf quickly explains the bounty to them. Shouldering their packs, they make their way to the town gates.

Ronny thinks for a second, and says, "We'll take you both. But you won't need to fight... leave that to us."

The gnome leads the pair over to the party and introduces Airk and Garthmond. Leon rolls his eyes a bit when he sees two people instead of one, but says nothing.

Ronny adds, "Leon here's in charge of the finances. He'll take care of you."

The halfling shakes four gold out of a pouch and hands two to each porter. He looks around the table and says, "Everybody set?"

"Err.... they asked for a backpack and an axe."

Leon glares at Ronny and says, "Well, we'll have to stop for those on the way out of town. We don't have spares on us. But then no more expenses until we hit the dungeon.... we're running too low on funds."

The halfling raises his cup and says, loudly, "For the Whores?" The group raises their cups in return and shouts, "For the Whores!" The group, however, has nothing left in the cups to drink, so the gesture falls flat. They sheepishly set the cups down on the table and make their way to the exit.

[Silverwood Trading]

The Whores wait outside as Leon enters, looking to purchase a backpack, large sack, and hand axe.

I think we should hit the sack early and wake up proper early and make our way just as the sun comes up. This way we'll be fresh and alert and also cuts down on our torch use." Mungo agrees profusely. While he does so Cottar mimics him the same way but silly. everyone has a laugh. Garret agrees only so he could get a lay in. Mr. DM, sir, if this is too many steps at once, I'll back up.

[Temple of the Sun]

Arriving back in town out of Cure Light Wounds spells, and still wounded, the Whores stop by the temple to get healed. Overall the Whores need to spend 13 gold pieces on Gordon, Kog, and Greg. And they need to replace some lantern oil. Then it's back to the Oak and Eagle.

As the group walks through town, they tell Airk and Garthmond that they'd like to hire them for the week, and if they say yes, Garthmond can keep the hand axe, and they'll buy Airk one to match.

[Silverwood Trading]

The Whores purchase an oil and a hand axe for Airk, if he agrees to stay on for the week.

Leon doles out a gold piece to everyone so they can enjoy food and drink before they all crash in the common room for the evening.

[The Oak and Eagle]

The Adventure Whores don't look as wide-eyed as they did before they encountered the Dungeon. Keen observers will note there are only seven of them, where there were eight yesterday. But they will enjoy the inn's ambience until it's time to go to sleep.

Sister Clarion tends to the wounds of the warriors, praying to The Sun, with libations of the Waters of Aquarius and a song to Taurus for strength.

Airk and Garthmond both agree to stay on for one week. Seeing what they saw, the seem relatively untroubled, even by the horrific demise of Vir. Airk gladly accepts an axe to use if needed, and Garthmond thanks you for the gift.

At the Oak and Eagle, the party laments their loss and when Gretta, the proprietor, hears of the loss, she provides dinner to the survivors for free. Story they told me was it's in the northern part. Goes down several levels, with a bridge across on the first. There was a fella, treasure hunter of some fame so he called himself, who claimed The Great Pit was the fastest way to get to the good treasure. He used a bullwhip to swing down from the bridge to different balconies or somesuch. Another group of kids claimed there was a Hall of the Slain to the south, where the 'rich stuff' as they called it was. Now if you're wondering about what sort of monsters lurk there, well, I reckon Relf Bluetooth or Viola at the Westgate might be the folks to ask."

We accept Arvan's offer of 630 for the statuette, and divvy it up among the party, paying Airk and Garthmond their daily cost from it. We bid Arvan a cheerful farewell and head out.

[Weaponsmith]

We ask Justin and his staff for plate mail armor for Acidum, and hope to trade in his banded mail for it. If we need to wait a few days, we will. It will give our spellcasters a chance to see if the liquid inside the pewter flask is magical or just wine or something.

[Rupert's Tower, if needed]

We bid Rupert fair day, and ask him if he can identify the liquid in the pewter flask we found.

OOC: The tax is only assessed if you want to store your earnings in the town vault (which is safe from theft). If you wish to find your own private place to store your loot, you can do that as well. Here's the relevant section:

quote:
Tallenhauser, the town Reeve (tax collector), also serves as Treasurer. Adventurers wishing to secure their loot in the town vaults must pay a 10% tax on all coinage deposited. Jewels and magical items can be stored in the town vault for a flat 10gp per item fee, payable upon deposit.

[The Granite Cup]

Ivanus the Slow takes the pewter bottle and swishes it around, listening to the contents inside. He checks the cork and the bottom for a maker's mark, but finds nothing. "No clue." The dwarf carefully screws in a corkscrew and pulls at it. When the cork clears the lip of the bottle, a cloud of horrible smelling greenish gas pours out of it and quickly fills the taproom.

Dwarves and gnomes scatter, breaking off their arm-wrestling and drinking to flee, retching at the putrid odor. Ivanus falls to the ground, himself losing his lunch all over the floor behind the bar before crawling to the door.

[assuming you all exit as well...] When Ivanus recovers enough to speak, he glowers at the Adventure Whores. "What was that? Some sort of prank? Don't set foot in my tavern again!"

You notice the smell is sticking to your clothes, quite possibly your skin and hair as well. People passing on the street give you (and the dwarves and gnomes who were present) wide berth.

The party heads to the bazaar. It is an open air market, with tents and booths set up in a square surrounded by small shops and kiosks. Merchants from afar as well as local craftsmen sell a variety of goods -- food and drink, tools, clothes of all sorts, household items, spices, books, weapons and armor, and animals.

The party wanders around to all of the weapon merchants, but find none who are interested in buying goblin crossbows. A toy merchant does offer 2sp for each of the brass horns (1gp total if you sell them).

You could try to find buyers for the crossbows among the other customers (i.e. set up your own shop for the afternoon) if you like, or try somewhere else.

The Whores return to town, paying Airk and Garthmond from the electrum they found, and make a quick stop at the Temple to get Gregory healed (again using the electrum).

Then it's back to the Oak and Eagle for some food and drink, tales of the dungeon, and a good night's rest for tomorrow's dungeon run.

Re: Around Town in Silverwood

The night at the Oak and Eagle is fairly quiet, until Toutates the Priest, who tends the Sacred Grotto, enters with a small entourage of nature worshipers. One of them is from out of town, and keeps asking the druid about the Ruins of Yeffal.

Toutates strokes his rich black beard. "Yeffal had truck with demons, as you all know. Unnatural creatures that need to be sent back to Hell. Also the undead, likewise abominations against nature. Yet he also had servants of a more natural sort. Of course the orcs and goblins, but also great grey worms and some say even a dragon."

Old Harvel, the dwarven jeweler and moneychanger harumphs at that. "The real legends of Yeffal are about the treasures he stole. Using his dark magic, he plundered crown jewels from a score of nations, plus various nobles and knights and rival magicians. The Eye of the Frost Troll was an amber gem with a black impurity the size of a quail's egg. Then there was the Jewel of Vendredi, Edreal's Heirloom Mirror, and Baroness Lysette's Brooch, among many others. Never mind the monsters, it's those treasures he stole that show the real evil of Yeffal."

A group of dragonborn adventurers, armed to the teeth, enters the Oak and Eagle and listens to the tales about the ruins. When the tales end, for now, anyway, one of the dragonborn makes his way across the room to Old Harvel.

"We set out for the ruins tomorrow," he says, trying to hide his nervousness. "Can you tell us about the Keep? Bart thought we should start there and he's our boss...."

Harvel nods and strokes his beard. "Ah, the Keep? That's where Yeffal had his throne room. Also, so it's said, where he practiced his magic experiments. My grandsire was one of the dwarves taken slave by Yeffal and forced to work on the construction. He, like all the other builders, was never seen again. I'll tell you this, Yeffal wouldn't have needed so many dwarven engineers if he didn't want to fill up the keep with secret passages. Oh, and I'm sure some of the looted great treasures must be there, where he could have admired them, rather than down in the dungeons guarded by who knows what. Best of luck to you. And remember, if you come back with gems and jewels, I'll be happy to trade them in for cash...for a small surcharge."

At the Oak and Eagle

Gretta serves her finest roast mutton, garlic and potato stew, fine wine, and whatever the high-spending dragonborn wish for, glad to have a party with plenty of gold to spend in her inn.

Talk around the inn centers on the dungeon with the Party Posse in the common room. An old-timer dwarf tells the party that if they're in trouble in the dungeon, search for a "door of yellow mist" which, if they step through it, will transport them directly home to Silverwood.

A group of trappers and woodsmen talk about the Knockers that inhabit the ruined Keep. The Knockers, they claim, are crafty and sly, but will serve a True Knight or Maiden without betrayal. All others should beware.

Sister Clarion directs a pair of acolytes to assist with the body. It is placed on a table in a side chamber. Removing a cone of incense from a small wooden case, she puts it in a bronze censor and lights it, then swings the censor around the body, masking the smell of decay with incense smoke as she recites The Prayer to the Sun at the End of the Day.

After performing the preparation ritual, she returns to the Flames of the Sun. "You have done a good deed for this poor soul. I would like to reward you with a small token of gratitude." She hands a rolled up parchment to Selen, who appears to be the leader.

However, the party later suffered some bad luck, and the only survivor of the expedition retired and took a boat down river, never to return. They never told me exactly where the Well of Bones was located, but I know from other things they told me that it was somewhere in the northern part of the first level, near the Great Pit.

"The Well itself may well be very dangerous. I do not doubt that Yeffal corrupted the bodies of those laid to rest there if he found it, which he likely did. Yet, there are likely some great treasures there. The records of the Temple suggest that a magical giant-slaying sword named Hofud may be there, as well as a cloak that obscures the wearer.

"I think exploring the Well may be dangerous for you, but if you could confirm for me the location of the entrance, I would reward you each with 50 gold coins."

Clarion looks at Selen with compassion. "The tomb was lost to us over four hundred years ago. The best case scenario would be that Yeffal never discovered it while constructing the labyrinth beneath his castle. In that case, aside from a few traps to discourage grave robbers, the danger should be low. Given the extent of the dungeons, however, and the fact that the adventurers I mentioned earlier found a way in, I would guess Yeffal did indeed discover the Well of Bones. As he did with other earlier works beneath his castle, I can only assume he used foul magics to turn the interred holy men and women into abominations. He may even have summoned demonic guardians and placed them there to guard the treasure. If you do find the entrance, bring word to me rather than risking your own lives trying to plumb its depths."

After he takes a moment to settle down, he continues in his normal grumbly voice. "They belonged to that snake cult. Thought they could summon some demon or dark god to raise Yeffal from the dead or some nonsense. Maybe a century back, when I was middle-aged, they came to Silverwood. Threw around a lot of money. Got some young humans and a few gnomes to follow them. Tried to set up a shrine in the dungeon. Their leader was rich. Probably a noble's son. He wore proper jewelry, some fine pieces. While lounging around the common room, the scarred halfling stops scowling at the group and finally comes over. He doesn't introduce himself. The old dwarf gets out his scales and weights the silver coins, and then weighs out the gold he owes you, handing over 164gp to the party for the gem and silver.

Arvan breaks into a grin at the sight of a second adventuring party coming in on the same day. "Oh, you lot again," he smirks at the all-Dragonborn party. "Well, let's see what you got."

His smirk fades and is quickly changes into a smile of delight when he sees the gems the party brought in. "Oh, now these pearls will be just perfect for a piece I'm working on. I'd value each at 500 gold, so 2000 altogether. Of course, I get my cut, 3%. Oh, and the topaz seem to be worth 50 gold each, so another 100, minus my commission. So that's 2100 gold, minus 3% or 2,037 gold."

It takes him a while to measure out the coins. Finally, he exchanges the copper and silver coins for an additional 310gp.

Grinning in happiness this time, Arvan politely thanks the Party Posse for their business, and asks them to visit him again if they ever find such precious gems or jewels in the future.

Today, the only magic item they find for sale is an enchanted dagger. The merchants, a blustery, portly middle-aged fellow from Calamesh and his wife, a stick-thin young tattooed woman from Mishquewanakwa, claim it is of the second order or potency, and thus they are asking for 5000 gold for the weapon.

A young-looking dwarf greets the Party Posse as they enter, and shows them into the office of Tallenhauser. He's a wizened gnome with a bulbous nose and curly white hair. He pushes his monocle onto his right eye when he hears that the party plans to donate the Towne Ransomme.

"Very good, very good, yes. I say, that's very good of you fellows. The dragon Nevadormis will be pleased, yes, I do believe. Are you paying cash? Yes? Excellent. So that's 250 for the ransomme, and you wish to store a further 1000 gold coins, yes? Very well. Just a moment."

The gnome gets out a large ledger book, leafs through it to the last entry page, and takes down the party's details and records their deposit. He then explains that the party need only provide proof of deposit by placing a hand on the Telling Stone, a big red slate tablet which he drags from behind his counter.

"Once each of you has placed a hand on the Telling Stone, it will remember you. Any of you can then retrieve your deposited funds, in full or in part you know, at any time. Business hours only, of course, don't you know. And public holidays are right out, oh no, can't do business on Fair Day or during the Solar Holidays, or The Festival of Stars. Surely you understand. Tallenhauser does a quick bit of math on a slate with chalk. "Yes, if you'd like an even 600 gold deposited in the account, you should deposit 666 gold, 6 silver and 6 copper. Taking the 10% tax from that, you see, will net you an even 600 gold in your account, and the Lord Mayor will have his due.

"It's a win-win, you see. I know many try to avoid taxes, but it does pay for the town watch, building the stone walls to replace the wooden palisade, don't you know, and, well, repairs to the clock tower if the parts to repair it can ever be found. More as well, but I'm sure you don't care about all the details. I find them fascinating, of course."

Axehaven Manor

The manor house is about 10 minutes' walk south of the town's southern gate. It is a large stone house with three wattle-and-daub wings that look to have been later additions to the original stone building.

Ringing the bell at the front door, a servant answers within minutes. After hearing of your business, your party is escorted to a side chamber with comfortable wooden chairs, a large fireplace with a small fire burning, and a window looking out over the river to the west. The stuffed heads of two deer, a black bear, and what must either be a giant eagle, griffon, or hippogriff decorate the wall opposite the window.

Sir Constantus, a healthy looking man in his late fifties, enters, flanked by two guards who take positions just inside the door, holding bardiche pole arms at attention. The Lord Mayor has a salt-and-pepper beard and gray temples, but the rest of his hair is black. He wears a fine doublet and hose, and has a battle axe strapped to his back and a pair of daggers in his belt. "Please, sit. I hear you have recovered one of the lost artifacts stolen by Yeffal many years ago. May I see it please?"

Despite the polite phrasing, you get the definite impression he's not making a request, but you also note a hint of excitement in his voice.

The Caswaddon family are not Halfling, of course, but that does not mean what he says is untrue. He could be an agent of the family. I, however, can assure you that I can send word to the family through the baron. It will take some time, as my magister will need to prepare the proper spells. If you would like to deal with this agent, that is your choice, but by decree the transaction may not take place within the town walls. That may be why this halfling met you at the Westgate."

You are led to the back area of the stone section of the house, to a large chamber with wooden pillars supporting the roof, a dais at the far end with a long table for the Lord Mayor and honored guests, and two long plank tables with benches for other guests. Without ceremony, the Lord Mayor sits at one of the long benches while servants bring in some loaves of bread, roasted venison, boiled vegetables, and a small tun of ale and serve you as you like.

By the time you finish eating, Tallenhauser arrives with a quartet of guards and hands the brooch to the mayor. He examines it with care, and the gnome reeve points out several details to the knight. They both consult their records, and agree that it is indeed the missing Brooch of Baroness Lysette.

Re: Around Town in Silverwood

The Halfling scowls when he hears that the party doesn't have the cameo anymore, but quickly recovers his composure when mention of the reward is brought up again. "Well, if you can get the item back from the Lord Mayor and bring it to me safely, I'll handle all the details for you. Otherwise, I'm happy to take that commission even if you let the Lord Mayor broker the deal. As for why I don't retrieve items myself, my adventuring days are over. I've found it more lucrative and less hazardous to my health to broker sales of items recovered. If you find any other items in the dungeon that need dispossessing, feel free to contact me here. I'm Farley, by the way."

He then adds in Thieves' Cant, "If you don't want to pay taxes on items, bring them to me before you go to Tallenhauser or Arvan. Fencing is my specialty." To the non-theives, it sounds like he's discussing the health of the two town notables.

Re: Around Town in Silverwood

Axehaven Manor

Rupert arrives with Sir Constantus and Tallenhauser, and the town's mage sets up a crystal ball on the table. He holds it in both hands and concentrates, staring into the depths. Colors swirl within it, but the mage seems to see something you don't. He smiles through his black beard. "Good day, Lord Caswaddon. Yes, everyone is here now." To the Lord Mayor, he says, "Your Honor, you may proceed."

The Lord Mayor explains the situation, describes the jewel, and has Tallenhauser read the records of it in their log books. Rupert repeats all of this into the crystal ball, and occasionally relays questions from the far end. Once everything is said, the Lord Caswaddon appears satisfied. Through Rupert, he agrees to pay the party a total of 8,000 gold coins. Tallenhauser of course mentions that the town's tax is 800 gold, leaving 7,200 gold for the party. The Lord Mayor makes arrangements to advance the money to the party.

Rupert then takes the Brooch, slips a ring on his finger, and says, "I will return tomorrow. The ring only allows me to teleport once per day." That said, he disappears.

Tallenhauser hands you a note of credit worth 7,200 gold coins. Sir Constantus shakes hands with each of you and thanks you for recovering one of the items stolen by Yeffal long ago.

Rupert's Tower

The next day, the party meets up and heads to Rupert's Tower. The sign is gone from the door, and an apprentice in green robes and a pointy green hat lets you in. Rupert comes trudging down the stairs, wiping his bald spot on his head with a hand towel. "Teleportation is the worst form of travel," he mutters.

When he sees your group waiting, he composes himself quickly and smiles. He tells you how he was able to teleport to the Caswaddon villa, delivered the jewel, spent the night and had an excellent dinner with the Lord Caswaddon, then teleported back home at first light.

When you ask for the scrolls, he mumbles to himself for a minute, does some calculations on his fingers, then nods and shuffles into a side room without comment. A few minutes later, he emerges with one of his apprentices behind him, this one wearing pink robes and pointy hat. The apprentice hands over two rolls of vellum.

"As requested, two scrolls with a sleep spell on each. Use them well. That will be 200 gold coins."

Re: Around Town in Silverwood

The Party Posse spends 9 days in town, waiting for Brother Hector to finish the potions.

While in town, they of course hear many stories of the recently recovered Brooch of Baroness Lysette. Several other treasures of yore, stolen by Yeffal if rumors are to be believed, are mentioned.

There is talk of the magical Wand of Skelmis which they say Yeffal always kept near his throne...but then there's talk of him stealing thrones as well as treasures and debate as to which throne the wand was kept near.

Relf Bluetooth often speaks of a gem known as the Eye of the Frost Troll, which he believes his hidden somewhere in the ruins of the Keep rather than in the dungeons. He and his companions could never locate it, however.

Finally, old Elmithrisar, the elf so old no one knows exactly how old he is, mumbles about the Arms of King Peter the Great, magical armor. He says, "The Arms of King Peter are hidden such that the blind may find them while the sighted may not."

After waiting the requisite amount of time, a messenger from the Grey Friars comes to inform you that your potions are ready.

The Grey Friar's Monastery

Brother Holger greets you with three blue vials of liquid. "I hope these potions serve you well. If you have other potion needs, please feel free to inquire. Also, if you find any potions in the ruins and would like more of them brewed, with a small sample I can duplicate them. It's much faster and easier than brewing from scratch."

[Oak and Eagle]

Into the Oak and Eagle walks a pair of green robed misfits.  Both men are grey skinned, ugly, slightly hunchbacked and identical in all respects right down to the worn boots they wear.  They look around for a bit, almost daring for someone to comment on their appearance before settling down at a corner table.

Soon after another small group enters: An Elf dressed in a flowing black mourner's cloak, a thin man in a red robe and a tall man in plate armor, shield and war hammer.  The robed man and the armored man walk up to Gretta and introduce themselves "Hello, I am Cyrus von Stryker, this is Brother Martel and the somber fellow over there is Renn Darkmantle.  We have heard that this is the place to be if one seeks fortune and glory.  For now, we seek naught but some food and a place for the night.  Can you help us, good Innkeep?"

Moments later the doors bang open and in walks a dashing man with the swagger and a smile flanked by two grim warriors.  One warrior is both grim and fidgety as he surveys the Inn.  The other warrior would need to stand on a shoe box to reach five feet.  He has a sledgehammer strapped to his back.  Probably to knock "too talls" down to size.

The dashing man doffs his hat and bows to the crowd "I am Edward Cross and these are my companions "The Butcher" and "Runt".  Feel free to approach us if you have need of adventurers for hire.  For we are indeed adventurers and we are certainly for hire!"

With a flourish Cross takes a seat near the misshapen twins.  The two warriors follow suit, but with much less panache.

The misshapen twins put their heads together and speak in conspiratorial whispers.  After a few moments one of them turns toward the Edward Cross and speaks in a voice that sounds like rocks being dragged against each other "You are adventurers?  I am Kane and this is my brother Kano.  We are also in search of adventure.  If you can see past our infirmities, we would join you."

Cross looked at the pair and began to sneer, but was cut off by a new voice.

"You are adventurers as well? Clerics of Stone and Earth, by your garb I take it?" asked Cyrus who had overheard the Twins "We are too.  Perhaps all of us could travel together.  There is strength in numbers and my companions are men to be reckoned with."

The wily Cross turned his derisive sneer into a glowing smile.  He had been sizing up the big man in the plate, the Elf and the tall man in red.  He had planned on approaching them as they seemed more capable even than his own companions. "I was just about to suggest the same, my good man."

Cyrus stood and opened his arms in welcome, even to the Twins, he had no idea that the ugly pair were Clerics and would have sent them packing, but Cross was adaptable "Please, pull your tables up to ours and we will discuss our alliance in detail."

As the Dead Reckoning members form their party, they overhear a few rumors.

Old Elmithrisar, the elf so old he looks like an aged human, tells you of a gem knownnas the Eye of the Frost Troll. "As big as a clenched fist it was. Blueish, with a dark pupil like an eye. Saw it myself once, before Yeffal stole it. I believe it was a favorite of the jewels he stole. Kept it in his keep, guarded by five elements."

A pair of hunters from Honeyhaven (a halfling village to the north) mention that the ruins have more than one way into the dungeons. They claim to know several.

A gruff but well-spoken half-orc claims to have a surefire guaranteed bit of information on several magical items, but demands a private meeting to discuss details.

Brother Martel and Cyrus converse with the Halflings.  Cyrus asks "You know the ruins well?  What can you tell us of them?  Would you be willing to guide us there?  What sort of monsters lair there?"

Elmithrisar seems pleased to have an audience, even if only one. "Well, it was a few years back when Yeffal came to these parts. A young human, powerful in magic. Set up a tower on the hill north of town. Immediately set to digging tunnels underneath. Lots of work for townsfolk, so we welcomed it. Started adding fortifications 'round the tower, too. Soon as you know it, it's a full blown castle with a labyrinth below. Yeffal starts teleporting around the world, taking what he wants from kings, nobles, other powerful adventurers... All sorts of jewels, gems, magic swords and the like. Secreted them all over his lair. Most have never been found. One day, Yeffal disappeared. His soldiers waited around for a while, but when he never showed up again, half left. The orcs and goblins started claiming the castle and dungeon for themselves. Plenty of monsters had shown up already, they also carved out chunks for themselves."

While Elmithrisar spins his tale, the two halflings nod at Brother Martel and Cyrus. "We can show you several ways in for 5 gold each. We're just showing you to the entrances, mind. Not going in."

The gruff, muscular half orc motions for those that would like to discuss things with him to follow him to a booth in the back corner. He checks back over his shoulder to make sure no one's listening in. "Well, gentlemen, here is my proposition for you. I am no great lover of my non-human kin, and the chieftain of the local tribe has a magical horn. If you wind it, it summons barbarian warriors to do battle on your behalf. If you kind sirs would be interested in retrieving it, I can offer you a map of most of the orc lair. I only ask in return a full share of any treasure you acquire from the orcs. If you would like to inquire about my dealings or my character, I'm sure Viola Wilmuth, proprietor of the Westgate Inn, will vouch for me. Gretta, who runs this fine establishment, may not, but then I think she may have a prejudice against my folk. She doesn't like it when I'm in here, to be honest. I think old Reckless Relf gets a pass because of some service he provided to her in the past. Relf should vouch for me as well. He runs Silverwood Trading, where you can buy your gear. As to my proposition, I have no interest in the horn. It is merely an enticement to all of you to seek out the orcs' riches. Rupert nods and smiles, "Yes, yes, of course that would work. Contan, come here!" An apprentice in purple robes and pointed hat appears after a few seconds. "Be a good girl and fetch me a scroll of levitate from the vault."

The apprentice runs off, and returns about five minutes later carrying the scroll. She hands it to Rupert and bows without saying a word.

"Here it is, one scroll of levitate. That will be 200 gold. I trust your mage has been properly instructed and knows the read magic spell?"

The party pools its gold as Keldon answers, "Yes, I know Read Magic." We hand over 200 gold pieces for the scroll, and we again thank Rupert and then head to....

The Town Vaults

We say hello to Tallenhauser, and withdraw 200 pieces of gold to divvy back up between the party members as before. Then it's off to...

The Oak and Eagle

We spend the rest of the day/afternoon/night at the inn, resting up for tomorrow's delve.

After a lengthy and monotonous chat with Tallenhauser as he faultlessly counts out the coins, the party retires to the inn for the evening.

While there, they overhear a rumor of a talking painting. The story, if it can be believed, is that Yeffal once stole a famous painting from a rival wizard, but the wizard cursed the painting. According to the story, the painting would ask riddles to anyone who passed by it, and delivered a small jolt of lightning to anyone who failed to answer. Yeffal left it in his Keep to torment his servants and guards, which caused him much pleasure.

Oak and Eagle Tavern

Dead Reckoning somberly wanders back into the Oak and Eagle having finished their first foray into the dungeon.  Though a successful in bringing back a few trophies they had lost their most boisterous voice in Cross.

Runt and the Butcher told the others that they would prefer to bury Cross in their own way as they knew Cross best.  The rest of the group consented.

Meanwhile the rest of the group went ahead and sold the trophies, had the leather armor made and rented rooms for the night.

How much can a cutlass, leather armor and a feathered hat sell for?

Cyrus von Stryker stood up and motioned the youth to their table "You seem like a trustworthy fellow, come join us we are planning our next foray into the depths of yon hill!"

"I would gladly join you, good sir, but I must outfit myself first.  I am fresh off the turnip wagon and need to outfit myself better."

"Nonsense!" answered the red robed noble "One of our former companions tragically died within the hill.  I am sure his friends would share his gear with you as he won't be needing it any more."

Runt and the Butcher glared balefully at Cyrus, but said nothing, though the pair of fighters did grumble a bit as they pushed a sack filled with Cross's gear across to the young Postue.

"Much obliged, gents!  Let me pay for your rooms for the day and drinks for the night.  The least I can do for my new comrades-in-arms!" answered Postue.

The group sat and drank and planned on their next move.

Postue, being newer to the village drifted about the tavern and spoke to some of the locals trying to pick up anything useful during the night.

Martel and Cyrus take the sad duty of burying their fallen friend.  Martel says some heartfelt words over the deceased while the others looked on.  Runt and the Butcher began to fidget and roll their eyes at the cleric's sermon, but did not cause too much trouble.

Once finished the group returned to the Oak and Eagle and secured  7 rooms upstairs (7 gp).  They convened a conference in Cyrus' room to divvy up the treasure.

On the second level, there is an underground river. If you have a way to breathe water, it can make a good escape route as it empties into the Ashel River not far from the ruins.

A gnome girl, in her mid-thirties maybe, takes Yor and Postue's orders (if they want a drink) while Ivanus waddles over to a group of dwarves in miner's gear. After a few minutes of discussion, three young dwarves return with Ivanus.

The eldest hooks his thumbs in his work overall straps and says, "Hi. I am Larry. This here is my brother Daryll, and that there is my other brother Darrel. We've heard you want some porters to follow you around the dungeon. We can do that, for 3 gold each a day." Each carries a mining tool - a pickax, a shovel, and a drill. They also have helmet-lights. If you'd like to hire them on, they will need bags or backpacks to carry loot which you will have to supply, but they have plenty of candles for their helmet lanterns.

Ivanus adjusts his eye patch and says, "You vant ze sell-swords, too, yes? Try ze Vestgate Inn. Lots of sell-sword men zere. Burg-dvarf types are too sensible to be sell-sword men."

Cyrus smiles at the Halfling “Please sit!  I am Cyrus Von  Stryker and these are my companions.” The red robed man pointed to a large plate armor wearing man sitting protectively to his left “this is Brother Martel, my friend and would-be bodyguard.”

Cyrus then pointed toward 4 other people sitting across from him “we refer to that lot as the ‘sullen side of the table’.  That’s Krayd, called The Butcher, Runt and the Twins: Kane and Kano.”

Martel offered a hand to the Halfling in friendship.  The “sullen side of the table” stared at the Halfling with only the Twins giving slight nods of acknowledgement.  All 4 of them wearing heavy plate armor and bristling with weapons.  Runt seems aptly named as he is nearly as short as the Halfling, but is obviously Human.

The Butcher sat back and glowered, but said nothing.

It was Brother Martel, Acolyte of the Sun's turn to glower at Runt and The Butcher.  The pair smirked back at the big Cleric.

The Westgate Inn

Julian nods. "You are correct, sir. Apologies on not recognizing you immediately. Are you still interested in my previous offer? I'll go contact the gentlemen who may be interested in your offer of employment. You can inform me of your decision with regards to my own offer at that time."

The Half-Orc gets up and leaves the inn. About an hour later he returns with two human men, both wearing leather armor and armed with swords and slings. One is huge, nearly 7' tall and well-muscled. The other is slim and trim, with a curious gleam in his eye. Julian introduces them. "This is Ferdinand the Bull and his companion Felix the Cat. The third member of their group, Frog the Toad, told me to 'bugger off.' Pardon my Elvish."

Felix makes his offer. "Ten gold each per day, we'll fight for you. Plus put up an extra five gold each for insurance. If we die, that five goes to our next of kin. If we do well, we'll expect a bonus."

Postue nods to Julian "I thank you, sir, for finding these men." he leans over and offers the Half-Orc 3 gold pieces (I offered 3 GP because that seems like a good day's pay.  Lemme know if that's too little.)

"You are both hired.  We agree to the weregild as well.  We have heavy armor and shields for you too.  Report to the Oak and Eagle at dawn in 5 days." he explains to the two men-at-arms.

Kane stares for a long moment at the Half-Orc "Not yet.  Soon."

The group waits 5 days for Postue to heal up before leaving.

Trade Bazaar

After spending a night at the inn, the Adventure Whores spend some time wandering around the Trade Bazaar. There is an old woodsman selling seven arrows. "These arrows belonged to my father, and he says they were enchanted. I never had no need of them, and I could use some money. They're yours for 200 gold."

At a booth set up by a merchant who regularly passes through Silverwood, you find a wand. "This wand was sold to me by the conjurer Gwynddolyn. It paralyzes your enemies so you can capture them or run away. I had your town mage Rupert take a look at it yesterday. He says there are nine uses still left in it. I'd say it's worth 1500 gold, and not a copper less."

Gary, who usually lets Leon do the talking, pipes up. "May I examine those arrows, sir? I can tell how strong the enchantment is with my magic." If the woodsman is receptive to the idea, he'll cast his Detect Magic on the arrows. If the woodsman appears to get belligerent, Leon will stop Gary and apologize profusely.

What happens when Gary attempts Detect Magic?

(Leon will buy the arrows either way, especially if he has to pacify the woodsman.)

The merchant with the wand says, "Of course, I would be happy to sell you this wand, good sirs. But what if someone else comes through the bazaar while you are away and offers me more for it? For a small holding fee of, shall we say 50 gold coins? Yes, that sounds good. For a holding fee of 50 gold, I swear I shall not sell this wand before you return from the town vaults."

A wagon laden with turnips rolls up to the Inn and a Dwarf dressed in rags carrying a large pouch falls out.  The Dwarf throws the turnip farmer a few coins and saunters into the Inn.

The Dwarf looks around and declares "I am Zed Beardface of Clan Beardface and I seek treasure and adventure!"

Cyrus von Stryker stood up and motioned the Dwarf to their table "You seem like a trustworthy fellow, come join us we are planning our next foray into the depths of yon hill!"

Runt's gear is pushed across the table to the hairy Dwarf.

"Much obliged, gents!  Let me pay for your rooms for the day and drinks for the night and donate this pouch of gold to the party treasury.  The least I can do for my new comrades-in-arms!" answered Zed.

The group sat and drank and planned on their next move.

Dead Reckoning returns to Silverwood like conquering heroes.  They march the surviving cultists to the Town Square like Roman Legionnaires parading before the Emperor.

Yor asks a curios passerby "Excuse me, can you tell me where we can find Captain Carlonus?"

Double Post

Oak and Eagle

Dead Reckoning celebrates its victory over the Cult of Toralesh with a Fete to their hirelings and anyone else that wants to drink and party for a night.

During the celebration Martel makes a speech "We were so successful with our mission we want to reward our companions with a little extra as a thank you for their fine service:

Ferdinand and Toad will each have Plate Armor for our next foray with a bonus of 20 gp apiece for brave service to our cause!

Larry, Darryl and Darrel will each get 50 gp for their toils.

Well done, men!"

Dead Reckoning cheers for their Hirelings.  Except the Butcher who mumbles something about wasting money on meat shields, but everyone ignores the frugalest member of the group.

****
In the morning  Cyrus casts detect magic on the Cultist weapons and armors and the Cult Leader's gear.

quote:
15 suits of undamaged chain mail (worth 20gp each)
5 suits of damaged chain mail (worth 15gp each)
1 suit of damaged plate mail (worth 25gp)
21 maces (worth 2gp each)

The leader also has an excellent looking set of gauntlets, a nice looking walking stick with a lion-hide grip, and a ring with three twisting serpents similar to the holy symbol from the altar.

And the Icon of Toralesh just to be safe.

OOC: Can Yor and Cyrus share some of their spells?

Grey Friar's Monastery
Yor and the Twins take the Carrion Crawler heads to the Grey Friars Monastery to see if Brother Holger has a use for them.

OOC: If Postue has not waken up by the next morning they lug him with them so he can see his paralysis.

Rupert's Tower
Cyrus and Martel take any items that they learn are magic to Rupert to see if he can identify them.

Trade Bazaar
Zed and the Butcher wander about for the day seeing if they hear or see anything interesting.

Dead Reckoning plan on staying in town for 2 days (first day to Detect Magic, second day to re memorize Sleep)

Re: Around Town in Silverwood

Postue recovers from his paralysis during the long march back to town (sorry I forgot to mention that).

Town Hall

Captain Carlonus takes custody of the captured cultists and has them locked in the town jail. "Good work capturing these miscreants. We will interrogate them and try to learn what they were up to in the ruins."

One of the guards hands over a sack of gold with the reward money.

The Oak and Eagle

All the hirelings cheer at their rewards, especially Larry Darryl and Darrel, who promptly have most of the money delivered to their families. It's enough to keep their loved ones living comfortably for several years. Many other locals participate in the celebration as well, offering up congratulations to the party for saving them from cultists.

In the Morning:

The gauntlets and cane are magical. The holy symbol and ring are not. None of the weapons or armor are magical, either.

OOC: if you would like Yor and Cyrus to share spells, that's fine. But they each need to cast Read Magic to read the other's spell book, so you'll need another day in town for this, and a scroll of Read Magic for Cyrus.

Grey Friar's Monastery

Brother Holger is pleased to receive the carrion crawler heads. He performs a few tests, consults some manuals, and announces, "I believe I can use these heads, and the alchemical reagents within the tentacles, to create a potion that will protect the imbiber from insects, spiders, worms, and the like. I will brew one up for you, and it should be ready within a week."

OOC: You will receive a Potion of Bug Resistance in one week if you wish to wait in town the whole time, or we can just say after your next delve if you still want to head out right away (so we don't forget about it). Potions of Bug Resistance are now added to the list of potions Brother Holger can create.

Whoever drinks the potion can't be touched/attacked in melee by normal or giant insects, arachnids, or worms, and gains a +4 bonus to any saves from effects caused by these creatures. Giant or monstrous bugs can save vs spells to get past the hedging effect.

Rupert's Tower

Rupert is happy to oblige. "You are aware of my normal fee, correct? One hundred gold coins per item identified."

Once the fee is paid, Rupert will analyze the items.

I have to go, I'll figure out some interesting info/rumors/items for sale at the Trade Bazaar later.

OOC: Can Postue estimate what the Holy Symbol and Ring are worth?

OOC: The Bug Resistance Potion is awesome!  They won't wait for it, though.  Next time they are in town I'll collect some.  I won't forget ;)

OOC: Ran out of money for that Read Magic scroll.  Dang it!  Will save some up for later.

Rupert's Tower

Rupert takes the gauntlets and the cane and puts them on his workbench. He passes his hands over them, mumbling mystic syllables, his eyes rolled back in his skull. [Yor and Cyrus can tell he's just putting on a bit of a show for the non-initiated.]

Finally, his eyes glow with a brief spark and he says, "The gauntlets are called Gauntlets of Ogre Power. Whoever wears them gains great strength. The cane is actually a magical wand that allows the user to see magical auras. I estimate you can use it seventeen times before it is depleted."

He pulls a dusty grimoire off a shelf and leafs through it. He stops on one page, reads for a moment, shakes his head, and turns to the next page. Then he smiles as he reads. "Yes, I thought it looked familiar. This wand is called Fitcher's Cane. Fitcher was a dastardly sorcerer who used to kidnap young women, and if they refused to marry him, would kill them. Well, that's gruesome, but I'm sure the wand will be a tool for good in your hands."

Martel, Cyrus, Zed and Yor step forward and speak with Captain Carlonus.  The Twins were always in the back,. Postue itched his face and stayed in the back having the natural hesitancy of thieves around Guard Captains.  The Butcher held back too; there was no telling if here inland that he might get recognized by some ex-marine.

Cyrus said "Thank you, Captain.  If you ever need help our group, Dead Reckoning, is on call!"

Rupert's Tower

Martel and Cyrus were happy at the news, until Rupert shared the knowledge of Fitcher's gruesome past.

"Well that is disconcerting." said Martel "It seems odd that a wand that simply detect magic would have such notoriety, though."

Well it is rather flamboyant." Cyrus mentioned as he hefted the walking stick "Does it have a command word?"

2 suits of Plate - 120 gp
bonus for F and T - 40 gp
bonus for L, D, D - 150
Identifying 2 items - 200 gp
staying at the O & E for 2 days - 6 gp 10 sp
Paying a week advance for a room - 7 gp (I'm going to store some extra gear in there while the group is in country)

622 - 524 gp spent = 98 gp left.

OOC: Magic-Users, Illusionists, and Bards only can use the wand.

Trade Bazaar

Wandering around and talking to the various locals, merchants, and out of town shoppers, Zed and the Butcher find two interesting bits of information.

An old wise woman tells them of the Pool of Prometheus. Somewhere in the dungeon is a fountain with a carved stone eagle. Yeffal stole the fountain from a Promethean shrine in the land of Temria.

A rotund, bombastic, mustachioed man named Throckmorton P. Ruddygore is looking for new beasts to include in his traveling menagerie. He will pay top prices for any strange or unusual creatures that can be captured and brought back to town. [100gp per HD of the creature]

The Butcher stopped in his tracks "You call be Butch ever again and we draw steel over it."

"Geesh!  Touchy much?  If you want into the barrel of inky darkness I'll oblige you, though." grumped Zed.

At dawn of day 2 the group was ready to set out again.

There is a bit of debate over who gets to wear the Gauntlets and who gets the wand.  The argument ends with acknowledgement senior membership and willingness to chop up corpses for the benefit of all being a strong point.  The Butcher, with a rare smile, dons the gauntlets while Cyrus getting the wand, but does so with the caveat that a charged item "belongs" to the group as a whole.

Can you update the ACs for Ferd and Frog?  They now have Plate and Lrg Shields.  PLus, if either wants to upgrade weapons we'll buy them what they want.

There is a buzz of excitement in the Common Room. An old adventurer's journal has been unearthed. The locals have been reading the notes and discussing what they might mean. Many pages have been ruined by what appears to be blood stains, but several passages stand out.

- The cross-shaped pool of Yggdrasil cures.
- A riddling painting in the Keep guards a magical [unreadable].
- On a deep delve to the third level, white dragon eggs were found, and wisely left alone.
- In the alcove, work the middle lever first. Left and right together can save your life.
- The kings of ancient Galadorn guard the way to Jirto's Star.

An old raconteur entertains the crowd the night Jimbo joins with the Party Posse. He tells a tale of a famous treasure hunter of days gone by, named Deana Joan. Joan was a student of history and was famed for her skills in acquiring rare antiquities. She entered many ruins, especially temples and other holy ruins, and brought back many relics. She used a whip both as a weapon and as a way to maneuver around the dungeons and ruins. She was last seen entering the Ruins of Yeffal's Castle, never to return, and The Raider, as her whip was known, is believed to be there still.

The raconteur finishes his tale, "And they say, if you want to acquire The Raider, you must perform acts of derring-do just as Deana was known for doing."

Re: Around Town in Silverwood

The Oak and Eagle

Dead Reckoning is heard inside the Inn well before they actually enter the place.  The dulcet tones of glorious harp-music joyously swirls through the air as the triumphant Adventurers barge into the Inn calling for ale, mead, grog and food by the steaming plateful!

The group hauls an enormous Harp inside and deposits it next to their traditional table.  The harp plays by itself!  As if some ghostly musician beyond the ken of mortals stroked the strings lovingly and skillfully.  The group also drags along bags of loot and 4 stuffed trophy heads: One of a great and fierce bear, the others are all giant reptilian heads of the mythical Hydra!

The group eats and drinks with great merriment over their haul.  Boasts are made and the group promises bonuses to their usual hirelings once everything is tabulated.

Those lucky enough to be in the taproom when Dead Reckoning settles in are bought rounds of drinks aplenty and treated to the newest tale of derring-do by Yor and Cyrus  all while being serenaded by the harp.

During the night Yor and Cyrus let it be known that the group will be hiring on more Men-at-Arms before leaving for the next expedition in the hopes that they will get some job interviewees.

OOC: Can a Hireling be training up to an actual level and become a Henchman?

The next morning the group goes about its business in Town

Rupert's Tower
Yor, Cyrus and the Twins visit the sage.

Cyrus asks "Hello again, good sir!  Can we trouble you for a few things?  We would like to learn about these things." Cyrus placed a piece of slender polished antler with a small ruby on the tip, about 1' long in front of the Sage and motioned toward the door as the Twins cursed and struggled to carry the magical Harp into the Tower.

The red robed magic-user turned back to the Sage "We found this wand near Yeffal's Throne.  Could it possibly be the Wand of Skelmis?"

OOC: It looks like Magic-users begin the game with Read Magic.  I must have missed that because I was about to buy a scroll for it.  Does Cyrus already have it automatically?

The House of Gold
Postue dragged Zed with him to see the local jeweler.

"Greetings, Master Dwarf!" called Postue as he spilled pearls and gems on the counter "What can you tell me about these?"

Zed stood near the door with a grumpy look on his face.  There was drinking to be done and he was stuck playing bodyguard for the group's shill.

Oak and Eagle
Martel and the Butcher begin talking to the patrons about the ruins.

"Does anyone know who 'the Raven King' is?"
asks Brother Martel.

Re: Around Town in Silverwood

The Oak and Eagle

Most of the town regulars are there when the Dead Reckoning arrive and start living it up. Word gets out, and pretty soon, the place is packed. Everyone's there to congratulate the successful adventurers (and get a free drink or two). The harp is a huge success, and Barnaby Rienswald, a local merchant, offers the party 800 gold coins for the magical curiosity.

When the adventurers ask if any men-at-arms are willing to adventure with them, they get several applicants.

OOC: how many would you like to hire? Normally men-at-arms don't gain XP, but you could try to hire retainers who have class levels and do gain XP, but they'll each want shares of treasure and a signing bonus instead of daily pay. We can discuss this in PMs if you want.

__________
The Next Day:

Rupert's Tower

Rupert is happy to see you again. "Ah, you've found magical treasures? Excellent! I'll be happy to look at them. My standard fee, as you know, is 100 gold per item." [Assuming you pay up!]

He calls for one of his apprentices, in a pink robe, to bring his book of lore. Paging through it, he finds the page he was looking for, and examines the wand the party found. "This does indeed match the description of the Wand of Skelmis. It has a curious ability. If you hold it and think of a type of metal, the wand will point it out if there is at least 100 pounds of it within 20' of you." [23 charges, charges are only expended on a positive detection]

After examining the harp, he declares, "This is a fabulous device, but I don't see any purpose to it other than its entertainment value."

OOC: Yes, he should have started with Read Magic. I probably didn't realize you didn't have it since you have Detect Magic as your first listed spell for him.

The House of Gold

Arvan grins when he sees Postue and Zed enter, especially Zed's appropriately grumpy dwarven mood. He happily examines the gems with his magnifying lens and his cunning eye. "Each of these turquoise are worth 10 gold coins, while the pearls are the real valuable ones. Each pearl is worth 500 gold. I can cash them out for you. My fee is 3 silver per turquoise, and 15 gold per pearl that you'd like converted to coin."

The Oak and Eagle

Martel and the Butcher gather rumors and evaluate the candidates for men-at-arms positions. They hear several tales of the Raven King. One says that it's just an old wizard with a raven familiar who disappeared in the ruins around forty years ago. Another says that the Raven King was a raven cursed to become a creature similar to a lycanthrope, and that it haunts the ruins. A third story says that the Raven King is a demon that Yeffal summoned from Hell, and that it controls ravens and crows to do its bidding.

The Magic-users happily pay to have the items identified.

"We would also like to purchase spells for our spell books, Sirrah, if that's possible?" asked Yor.

Can they purchase scrolls of Charm Person and Magic Missile?

OOC: Is the range on that wand correct?  20 feet?

House of Gold

Postue smirks "I like it." He hands over the turquoise and 2 pearls and squrrels the others away for later use.

Zed's frown turns upside down and his usual psychotically happy smile returns "Now you're talking my language, Sonny Jim!"

"We have another errand to run, Zed." says Postue as he drags the Dwarf out

The Grey Friars Monastery

Halfway to the Monastery Postue stopped and slapped his forehead "I forgot to grab a sample of that dang sticky tar!  So far we've used it to great effect."

"Yeah, well boo-hoo, boyo, we are cutting into my drinking time.  Let's get this over with before I get touchy and stuff you in the Barrel of Inky Blackness." grumped Zed, though the happy look never left his face.

Postue eyed his companion, but said nothing.

Once at the monastery Postue asked to see if the bug juice was ready yet (Potion of Bug Resistance)

Oak and Eagle

That morning Brother Martel gathers up the hirelings.  To Larry, Daryl and Darrell he says "Here's a bonus of a month's pay for each of you guys.  You are hard working and brave.  We head out again in a few days."

To Ferdinand he says "You're a strong warrior, Ferdinand, we'd like to ask you to join us full time.  If you are interested." He hands the warrior 100 gp as a bonus.

The Butcher and Brother Martel interview the candidates.

"Any of you swabs a Halberdier?" asked the Butcher

Martel looked at the ex-pirate "Uh, you realize that a Halberdier isn't going to be able to handle his weapon and a 10' pole?"

The Butcher stared at Brother Martel for a few moments as he processed the weak spot in his plan. "By Bel's bouncing buttocks...."

"Wait!  He doesn't have to probe with the damn thing, I can do that.  He just has to poke doors open so I'm not standing there like a jerk if a monster pops out."

Brother Martel nodded, "Now you're thinking it through.  Plus, he's right there in the second row stabbing over your shoulder."

OOC: They try to hire 2 Men-at-Arms.  Preferably Halberdiers.

After that, they will head down to Granite Cup

Granite Cup

The Butcher and Brother Martel enter the tavern.

Brother Martel approached Ivanus and speaks (in Dwarf) "Hello, good Dwarf, could we trouble you for some drinks and sound advice?"

The cleric puts 3 gold coins on the counter "We are looking for a stout Gnome or Dwarf warrior willing to brave the terrors of Yeffal's Keep.  Do you know any likely candidates?"

OOC: While they are there they will also ply the bar with drinks to see if they can drum up rumors about the Keep.  Specifically the Keep itself since they plan on entering it again.

In reply to Dead Reckoning (msg # 282):

Rupert's Tower

"Why, I believe we do have those scrolls in stock. First level spell scrolls cost 100 gold each." Rupert sends the pink-robed apprentice to fetch the scrolls.

OOC: Yep, only 20'. Good for checking closed chests, behind doors, etc.

The Grey Friars Monastery

Brother Holger shakes his head. "The potion is nearly ready. Please come back tomorrow and it should be finished."

The Oak and Eagle

Ferdinand thinks for a bit, then nods slowly. "I can do that."

When the Butcher calls out for halbardiers, a pair of finely dressed men with waxed mustaches approach. "I am Geisler, and this is Kessel. We are halbardiers, and have served the Venerable Elder Karl and his companions when they ventured into the ruins a few years ago. We would be willing to hire on, but our prices are higher than normal."

OOC: Two men-at-arms from when I ran the megadungeon for my regular group. They have fancy clothes gifted to them from Elder Karl, plate armor, halberds, and swords. Each asks for 25gp per day as pay, and they will only go together.

The Granite Cup

Ivanus accepts the gold, pours drinks, then sends the barmaid around to ask if anyone would be willing to venture out with the local heroes. He sits and polishes his brass listening horn in the meanwhile.

Some time later, the barmaid approaches with a young dwarf. His hair is golden -- the actual color of gold, not blond like a human -- and his beard is braided into three coils. "I am Igor. I'm no warrior, but I am better than most at stonework. I also speak Dragon and Medusa languages. I am willing to try the Keep with you, if you'll have me."

OOC: Igor is a noncombatant, but he gets 3 in 6 chances to all the normal Dwarf detection abilities, plus speaks two extra languages.

The magic-user gleefully pay for the scrolls (100 gp each?) before retreating back to the Inn to study and copy their new spells into the their spell books over night.

The Twins watch the distracted Magic-users leave.  Kane turns back to the Sage and says in his broken glass voice "There are other things we would know, Sage.  In the Keep we discovered a room on the first floor where there were corpses that had not decayed.  Once we removed a piece and it began to decay immediately.  Also, when we entered a disembodied voice announced us by our Professions.  These seem to be powerful magics.

"What else can you tell us about the Keep?  So far it seems abandoned, but we do not trust the calm so to speak."

Kano nodded at his brother's points acknowledging the truth of them.

Grey Friar's Monastery

Postue returns the next morning to pick up the Potion.  Though he takes Brother Martel the second time instead of the more worrisome Zed.

Oak and Eagle

The Butcher does a spit take when he hears the price for the Halberdiers "50 gold?  For two lubbers?  You better fight like Saber-tooth Tigers and have more guts than terriers to ask those prices!  We could hire five good men for that." The seadog motions toward the line of other candidates to illustrate the point.

Brother Martel eyed the pair "You must forgive us, friend Geisler and Kessel, but I'm sure you realize that price is very high without some proof of value.  We are generous employers, however, and recognize and reward quality as our people can attest to.  Perhaps you would be willing to join us on our next foray at a reduced rate, say 15 gp each?  If you prove your worth we have no no qualms about meeting your expected salaries later.  We also give bonuses based on the loot we find."

Brother Martel finished with "As a consolation, we are willing to pay the full 25 gold each for weregild to your families if the worst is to happen on this first trip."

The Grantie Cup

Brother Martel answers Igor "I'm sorry, Igor, though your offer intrigues us we are looking for a warrior to act as rear guard for our expedition.  Your skills are useful and we may seek you out later."

Rupert's Tower

OOC: 100gp for a 1st level spell scroll, so yes, that's correct. He typically has all 1st level spells available, and most 2nd (200gp). He'll always have one or two 3rd level available (300gp), but not always the ones you want. He never sells higher level scrolls.

Rupert listens to the Twins with interest, and jots down a few notes on the tablecloth before realizing what he's done. "Jasmine, fetch me some parchment and copy these notes onto it. Then have the tablecloth laundered." The apprentice mage hops up to find the parchment.

"The spell has been lost for many generations, but I have heard of a spell used in olden days that could speak as programmed by the caster. How it knew your professions, I have no clue. And the body parts that did not decay may have been under some sort of curse. Did you do anything besides move the pieces? I would have to research both questions more thoroughly to give full answers. For 500 gold, I could spend tomorrow looking through my tomes, and visiting the Grey Friars' library if necessary, to seek out answers. Normally I'd charge that per question, but both of these anomalies intrigue me.

"As for the Keep, I know little. I'm not like you brave sorts, running off into danger in search of treasures. I prefer to spend my days in study and instruction of the young ones."

Grey Friars Monastery

Brother Holger has the potion completed, as promised. "Drink this potion, and for a time, up to two hours, normal and giant insects will avoid you. Quite handy, as giant insects can be deadly. Use it wisely."

The Oak and Eagle

Geisler and Kessel don't get upset at Butcher's outburst. Kessel says, "Oh, we're worth the gold. Have any of these men been in the ruins? We've been in them on five expeditions and made it out alive, and richer too."

Geisler says, "Twenty each for this expedition, weregild as you offered, and bonuses if we do well and you find treasure."

The Granite Cup

Igor nods and slumps off. Another dwarf approaches. He has deep black curly hair, darkly tanned skin, and a barrel chest. He wears a brickmason's belt. "I'm Klaus. Buy me some gear and I'll guard your backs. Don't have no sword or axe, no armor. But I can fight."

Re: Around Town in Silverwood

Rupert's Tower

The Twins consult with each outer quietly (in Medusan) before Kane responds "We appreciate the offer, but lack the ability to pay for that service.  Perhaps if we are more successful in the future."

Kane frowns trying to remember about the body parts "The Butcher moved them about a bit.  He mentioned that they were dead before being dismembered.  There was an obvious lack of blood on the severed parts or the floor.  They were not decaying, only when Zed brought a piece outside did it decay and become...odoriferous."

Kano tugged at Kane's sleeve to get his attention.  Kano nodded at Kane and then at Rupert.  Kane spoke again "My brother also wishes to mention that we found a tower door, just south west of the Keep, that was sealed with magic.  Postue, our expert on such matters, felt it was too dangerous to breech.  Do you know anything about that particular tower?"

Grey Friar's Monastery

Postue takes the Potion "Thanks, Brother H, you're a fine fella!"

"Oh!  I almost forgot again.  We came across a cauldron filled with the stickiest damn tar you've ever seen.  It's come in pretty handy for us in our adventures.  Is there any way we can harvest some for you to study?  Some sort of solvent to make it easier to handle?  It actually injured one my clumsy companions.  It's that sticky.

“Oh and what do you make of this?  It came out of a chest.  It was rigged to break open when the chest was opened.” Postue hands the green vial to the Monk.

Oak and Eagle

Brother Martel and the Butcher confer for a few moments.  There is much bitching and grousing from the meat-rending pirate, but eventually Brother Martel gets his way.  In this matter, at least.

"We would be glad to have you at that price." the Cleric gives a sidelong look toward the Butcher "Welcome aboard."

"We are currently exploring the Keep proper.  What can you tell us about it?  Any rumors?"

The Granite Cup

"We have armor and a shield for you.  What is your weapon of choice, good Klaus?"

When the group is ready to depart they give Klaus Scale Armor, Small Shield and whatever weapon he prefers.

Rupert's Tower

Rupert says, "The body parts are strange. Sunlight leads my mind to thoughts of undead...but I would have to devote some study to the subject, as I said."

"I don't know of this tower, but I can tell you that magically sealed doors are not a particularly difficult spell. And there is an equally simple spell that can be used to bypass such. In addition to sealing doors and portals, magic could also be used to put an alarm or booby trap upon a door, but such magics are much more potent."

Grey Friars Monastery

Brother Holger takes the vial carefully. "I will examine it, and have a report for you upon your next visit to town."

The Oak and Eagle

Geisler and Kessel shake hands with Brother Martel, and offer to shake with The Butcher. "You won't regret hiring us on. You'll see. We've never been in the Keep, but we can tell you a bit." The two halbardiers lean in and whisper.

The Granite Cup

Klaus grins. "Like most Dwarves, I'm good with an axe or hammer. If you've got a hand axe or war hammer, I'm your man."

Postue spends some time buying up some last minute supplies (see end of Magical Mystery Tour thread for itemized list and cost.  Eveything I bought was on the standard lists so if anything is an issue let me know and I'll fix it).

The Butcher buys Klaus a war hammer so that he;s the only one wielding an ax.

They leave at dawn the day after so that the Magic-users can prep their new spells.

Klaus is given his new armor, shield and war hammer when they leave.

Back to the Keep!

Postue insists on stopping and getting 2 good samples of the tar.  One for adventuring use and one to bring to the Greyfriar's later.

Once that is accomplished they return to the Keep.

Marching Order:

Zed and The Butcher
Geisler and Kessel
Postue and Martel
Yor and Cyrus

Re: Around Town in Silverwood

One rainy day at the Oak and Eagle...

The mob known as the Dead Reckoning lounged around two long tables on one side of the Inn drinking and swapping lies.  A few of the members took note of the other groups in the taproom who also seemed put off by the inclement weather and exchanged some private words amongst themselves before asking Gretta to set up a table in the center of the room.

With her (presumed) agreement there was a flurry of activity which caused some buzz amongst the regulars.  When the table was ready drinks and invitations were given to the Adventure Whores and the Party Posse to join Dead Reckoning for a meeting of the minds!

Three of the fifteen members of Dead Reckoning were chosen to represent their side:

Postue is a young man with an "Elvish look about him".  He dresses in earth tones, carries a bow and long sword on his back, but what makes him stick out is the sweet Bear hide Leather armor he's wearing.

Cyrus von Styker wears thick red robes and a broad brimmed red hat. Upon his chest is pinned a brooch depicting a sword cleaving an anvil: the Sigil of House von Stryker.  Besides a set of daggers he appears unarmed.

Yor (sometimes called "The Snore") is a young Human wearing green robes covered with Moons, Suns and Stars.  He is laden down with belt pouches and, besides a dagger, appears to be only armed with a pointy hat.  He carries a 10' pole.

Though three were chosen a fourth member wanders over and takes a seat without asking for leave.

Zed Beardface is a Dwarf of little brain and much beard.  Bushels of red hair spill out from the neck of his plate armor with beady eyes buried in the hirsute mass.  He wields a Broad Sword and a shield that is decorated with a leering Dwarf-face that looks similar to Zed -the symbol of the much maligned Beardface Clan.

Cyrus, the red robed mage flicked an annoyed glance at the Dwarf, but said nothing to him.  Instead he called out "Care to join us?  I think we all may benefit from a conversation on this dreary day."

Ralph, Bart, and Milhouse, each a different shade of dragonborn, come to the table, drinks in hand. Observant folks might note that Ralph is a rust-colored sort, while Bart is a shade of blue, and Milhouse, a whiter shade of pale. While all three have left their equipment upstairs for now, Milhouse still wears a small silver holy symbol on a chain around his neck.

Ralph beams at the others as they take their seats at the table. Bart seems more poker-faced, while Milhouse smiles shyly as another group approaches the table.

Postue adds "In the north west corner of the ruins there is a broken down building where the jousters would gather.  That west corner is a tourney grounds.  In the building there is a trap door that leads down pretty deep.  It may bypass the 1st level right on down into the second.  Also in that building is a shrine dedicated to St. George.  If you pray at it you may receive a blessing."

The House of Gold

Arvan gets out his scales, magnifying lens, and a reference book. He spends several minutes examining the various items.

"This bracelet is mahogany, from the old pirate kingdom of the south, I'd wager. 400 gold coins for it. Now this gold clasp is nice. Elven, and while they ain't much for fighting...no offense Master Keldon, but we dwarves make better warriors you know, anyhoo, the elves do know how to craft beautiful jewels. This one's smallish, worth 500 gold coins. Oh, now this jeweled scabbard is a beauty, and Gnomish. That's why it's only dagger size. 700 gold for that one. I'm not sure who or what made this crystal decanter, but it's high quality crystal. 800 golds for this beauty. Finally, this brocade doublet bears the crest of the fallen House of Durairen, from this here kingdom, but of old. The pearls worked into the stitching and the rarity of brocade make it worth 900 gold."

He fiddles with an abacus for a few seconds then double checks his book to make sure he's assessed everything correctly.

"If you want to convert it all to coin, that comes to 3300 gold, and my fee comes to 99 gold."

OOC: Assuming you don't show him the sword. He could assess that, too, if you like.

Rupert's Tower

Rupert meets with the Adventure Whores, his fingers stained with inks from scroll scribing. Apprentices, one in green and one in purple robes and pointed hats, scurry around, cleaning up the sitting room.

Rupert takes the sword and begins to examine it. [OOC: assuming from your post you're paying him his standard 100gp fee for magic item examinations].

"Very interesting. The blade is one of the most well balanced, finely crafted blades I've ever seen. Now I'm no swordsman, of course. But even I can tell that this blade is something special. In fact...Darlene, bring me the treatise of Oakeshott the Blade Mage, would you?"

The apprentice in green runs to the bookshelf, scans the titles, and brings a thin volume to the town mage. He thumbs through it. "Ah, here we are! This is the Six-fingered blade of Montoya! Forged by special order for a noble with six fingers on his right hand, Montoya slaved an entire year to make this blade only to have the noble strike him down, refusing to pay his price. His son later avenged his death, and the sword ended up in the hands of the Dread Pirate Roberts after that. How it got into Yeffal's Dungeon I'll never know!"

Dead Reckoning returns to Oak and Eagle laden down with corpses and loot.  The retainers are thanked and group is liberal with rewards and buys their home tavern a round of drinks for everyone!

Party pays another week for a room (7gp

Zed stays in the common room for 2 days (2 sp)

Temple of the Sun
Cyrus, Martel, Geisler and Zed head there with Yor's corpse.

The party pays to have Geisler and Zed healed (down 3 hp and 4 hp).

Martel hands Yor's body over to Sister Clarion "Please, Sister, see to his needs.  Yor was a boon companion and will be missed."

Grey Friar's Monastery
Postue and the Butcher head there.

Postue asks if his green goo is ready?

The Butcher shows Brother Holger the snake heads and dragonling corpses "What do you make of these, Friar?  Can anything useful be made from the venom of these snakes?  Or these little lizard-swabs?"

Trade Bizarre
The Twins lug the load of toys they found in the Keep to see if any of the vendors there are willing to buy them.

quote:
the sixth is full of carved wooden toys -- animals, wagons, etc.

Kane explains in his harsh, whispering voice "These are from Yeffel's Keep;  Children's toys kept there presumably to distract them while their parents were being terrorized by the hateful magic-user overlord.  Much history here.  One could make a fortune selling this type of misery to the foolish."

Kano glares silently at the vendors as his brother speaks; one interpretation of this look could be that not buying these toys may have consequences...

At night at the Oak and Eagle:
Cyrus spends time transcribing Yor's spells into his own spellbook and transcribes Yor's notes into Renn's book.

The door opens and a brawny well-armed Elf steps in "I seek treasure and adventure!"

Martel stands and greets the fellow "You seem like an honorable and trustworthy sort.  You are welcome to join us.  We have delved into the Keep and found treasure glory and death aplenty."

The Elf smiles "Tell me of your adventures, Sir!  I am a Bard and would hear your stories and, if the gods will it, I will add my own to your!"

Postue sighed as he was poking through Yor's old gear "Here, I might as well give all this now before Martel yells at me." The thief pushed the ex-wizard's gear to the newest member of Dead Reckoning.

"I thank you, my friend, I will put this to good use.  I am Melaris." said the Elf.

The group spins tales for Melaris catching him up on all that has come before.  The Elven Bard drinks it all in with a gusto "I will begin a memoir immediately."

Also, for the bank, please keep a record on your character sheet of how much you've deposited, minus the 10% tax (or per item fee for gems/jewelry/magic items). They are completely safe from theft while there, and you can withdraw money at any time for no fee.

The Oak and Eagle

Dead Reckoning pay to keep their lodgings, and hand out pay and bonuses to their retainers, all of whom are willing to continue employment if you'll have them.

Temple of the Sun

An acolyte tends to the wounded, as Sister Clarion nods sadly at the sight of Yor's lifeless body. "Another young life, gone too soon. I will see to the arrangements. Would you like to make any sort of memorial?"

Grey Friars' Monastery

Members of Dead Reckoning and the Adventure Whores arrive at the same time. There is an unpleasant odd odor lingering in the room, and some of the furnishings are stained green. Brother Holger explains that the vial Dead Reckoning brought in was a stink bomb trap, and that opening it to investigate set off the contents in the lab. He's not too happy about that. "I did manage to collect a small sample of the liquid, though, which I will investigate in a safer manner once the Rector has been placated. The mess and stench were quite powerful!"

The alchemist completes his transaction with the Adventure Whores, passing them four potions of healing and asking if there is anything else they require. Then he turns to the snake heads and small reptilian bodies. He examines them for some time. "Yes, I can manufacture a potion of poison from this snake venom. I think it should only take 300gp. These corpses are pocket dragons, I believe. I would like to consult with Rupert before I try to duplicate their venom, as it may have unusual effects."

Trade Bazaar

The Twins talk to several vendors, a few of whom suddenly remember pressing business in other parts of town and close down their stalls rather than purchase possibly cursed toys. One vendor, a foreign woman with ankle length black hair, golden skin, and bright green eyes, wearing a multi-layered loose garment with strategically placed slits that reveal just enough skin to entice offers to buy all of the toys for 200gp. "They will make good conversation pieces. By the way, would you handsome gentlemen be interested in a magic wand? It creates the most wondrous illusions, and has at least five charges left. It can be yours for 2500gp."

Rupert's Tower

The Party Posse request many scrolls, and Rupert frowns. "Ah, you know, I have scrolls with the sleep spell. Of course you can purchase them. Standard prices, as you know. One hundred gold each. Spells for curing wounds are beyond me, though. Have you asked at the Temple of the Sun or maybe at the Sacred Grotto? I'm not sure if old Toutates is literate or not, but he can definitely cast spells to knit wounds closed!"

An apprentice in white robes and hat brings two scrolls of sleep up from the copy room at Rupert's command.

The Oak and Eagle

That night, Dead Reckoning meet their new Elven Bard companion, and The Adventure Whores and The Party Posse share the common room with them at dinner time. Several locals watch with interest as discussions of forming a supergroup are shared among the adventurers.

The Butcher mulls "300 gold, you say.  That much would sink me.  Keep it available, I'll be back when I have the booty for it.  Keep the pocket-lizards too.  Whatever you come up with will be better than me eating them to save cash."

Trade Bazaar

Kane takes the offered 200 gold "Interesting: a wand that blinds men to reality.  A useful tool of treachery and cowardly avoidance.  We lack the funds now, but we will kill more things.  Most which will deserve it and others that won't.  Perhaps when we have killed and explored enough we will return for the wand."

Kano stared at the woman, but as usual, said nothing.

Night at the Oak and Eagle

Melaris and Postue ask around for rumors about Yeffel having large or huge monsters within the Keep.

Cyrus rose and tapped his mug politely on the table "Excuse me, all?  It has come to my attention that perhaps our earlier offer has gained traction amongst our fellow adventurers?"

"Shall we discuss a joint delve?"

Re: Around Town in Silverwood

The Grey Friars' Monastery:

Brother Holger takes the small dragon corpses with interest, thanking them for the donation that will aid his study.

Trade Bazaar:

The woman fails to promise to keep the wand for the Twins; if another seller makes an offer for it, she will sell it. Magic item trading is a risky venture, after all.

Town Vault:

Dead Reckoning deposits their excess cash in the vault in two visits. Tallenhauser, the town tax collector, records the deposits and issues the party a letter of credit.

Temple of the Sun:

Sister Clarion's scribe brings out three scrolls of cure light wounds for the Party Posse. Each costs 100gp.

Rupert's Tower:

Rupert has scrolls of detect magic and read magic available but not of faerie fire. Rupert apologizes, "I say, I haven't had call for that one in a long time. Come back later after we've had time to scribe it."

Each scroll costs 100gp.

We ask Sister Clarion if she has three Healing Potions for sale, as we are most definitely in the market for them.

Rupert's Tower

Rupert nods sagely when asked about an invisibility scroll. "An excellent spell, if I do say so myself. Quite lovely. Of course, the scroll works the same as a normal spell. Once cast, you remain invisible until you attack or cast an offensive spell of some sort, or you decide to break the spell. That will be two hundred gold coins."

Grey Friar's Monastery

Brother Holger is happy to part with two potions of fire resistance for 600gp (300gp each).

Oak and Eagle

Zed Beardface kicks open the door of the Inn "It weren't no wyrm, but we bagged us two worms!"

Postue has Larry and co deposit the combined group earnings in a private room and speaks with the leaders of the Adventure Whores and Party Posse "So...by my count there's 2,200 gold and 1,000 silver.  How are we splitting it up?"

Temple of the Sun

Cyrus and Martel deliver the body of Melaris to Sister Clarion.  "We did not know him well, but he seemed I fine sort." says Cyrus.

"Please, Sister, see that he is laid to rest with honor.  He was a brave Elf." asked Martel.

Re: Around Town in Silverwood

Double post, read up please!

At night at the Oak and Eagle:
While the groups spend time discussing their deeds and parsing out the loot the door opens and a well-armed Elf with an open-faced wolf helm steps in "I seek treasure and adventure!"

Martel stands and greets the fellow "You seem like an honorable and trustworthy sort.  You are welcome to join us.  We have delved into the Keep and found treasure, glory and death aplenty."

The Elf smiles "I have heard that several bands have had success delving into Yeffal's Keep.  I would join you."

Postue sighed as he was poking through Melaris' old gear "Here, I might as well give you all this now before Martel yells at me." The thief pushed the ex-bard's gear to the newest member of Dead Reckoning.

Zed and Postue frowned at each other.  I feel like I've gone through all this before, they thought in tandem.  With a shrug they put it aside.

"I thank you, my friend, I will put this to good use.  I am Wulfgrim." said the Elf.

The group spins tales for Wulfgrim catching him up on all that has come before.  The Elven fighter drinks it all in, in silence.

Re: Around Town in Silverwood

Postue carefully counts out divisions of treasure and invites Bart and Leon to recount it.  When all parties are satisfied the remainder is used in rounds of drinks at the Oak and Eagle.

Postue and Cyrus use that time to question the revelers about the Keep.

In an attempt to make himself useful to his new compatriots Wulfgrim joins in the interrogations as well.

OOC: DR pools its money and pays out 109 gp for the hirelings and Ferdinand (1/2 share).  They rent out rooms for the night (8 gp) too before redividing their shares.

Re: Around Town in Silverwood

The Oak and Eagle

It's a lively night, especially as word gets out that the various rival groups banded together to face dragons. Despite the party's protests that the creatures were giant worm-like creatures, the townsfolks' rumors say otherwise.

Relf Blue-tooth, the local outfitter, smiles and nods at the tales of the party. "You creatures you faced are called caecillia. They look like worms but they're really giant amphibians. Like legless newts, only bigger. You lot are lucky you only lost one man against them. They are ruthless when hungry."

Temple of the Sun

Sister Clarion has her acolytes take Melaris's remains for burial. "Please take caution the next time you adventure. And may the Sun shine on your efforts."

Postue runs over to Grey Friars to see if the green potions are ready and if they figured out a value for the pocket dragon venom.

Wolfgrim and Zed divide up the treasure, pay the hired help and lug the remainder to the bank.

The Twins and Martel cast their healing spells on the group so they can leave in the morning.

Otherwise the group rests for a quick return.

NPCs paid and Inn costs too.
