Question for you guys:
I figure that party balance is far more important in the early editions than it is in 5th edition where there are so many half-casters. So I hesitate to bring in too many players who want to play one particular role. We began with two fighters right off the bat, and we have a cleric. But the next two people knocking on the door want to play a dwarf fighter and an elf fighter/magic-user. I'm especially torn because I like the dwarf's backstory a lot.
Since you're the ones who will have to do the dying if this goes sideways, I'll present you with an option. This is advisory, because I'm still the Dungeon Master, baby. :-)
The option is to take both fighters, and anyone else who comes in before the deadline (see below) and use the retainer rules to fill any glaring gaps, which at this point would just be a thief. The advantage is lots of combat power, the disadvantage is retainers, which I'm not a fan of. But retainers are old school, soooo...
The deadline: I would like to launch the game a week from Monday, on the 9th. I would turn off the new players sign on Wednesday or when we get to 6 players. As long as I put up the character sheets today or tomorrow, is there anyone who sees a problem being ready on the 9th?
