Shorted wires spark and splutter, providing occasional light to a room which looks as if it was once a laboratory. A workbench lies, lopsided, with shattered glass littering the floor beyond. The door to the room stands open, its control panel completely crushed. Across the floor of the room are littered several crumpled forms. One is a cloaked being, encased in a dark, battered suit of armor. A few meters from him lies a male weequay dressed in the attire of a Jedi. A third Jedi, a male twi'lek lies by the wall, a nasty gash across his forehead. The final body is that of a female togruta, dressed in an extravagant Jedi robe. Her form lies across the workbench, her waist and neck twisted on unnatural angles.

In the center of the room, nestled amongst the remains of what appears to have been a small, metal pedestal, lies a strange cube, roughly the size of an adult human head, formed of dark stone and covered in strange carvings.

The figure in the dark robes twitches slightly, then coughs. Then with a groan, he attempts to roll over. Very slowly, cautiously, he looks about the room. Then he heaves himself over, attempts to raise himself, and promptly falls back in a crumpled heap with a grunt.

The dark cloaked figure does not move for some time, and it is the weequay who is next to awaken. He suddenly gasps for air, as if he had been suffocating, and jerks awake. He lies where he is, panting hard, for a minute or two, before managing to sit up. He clutches at his head as he does so, swaying and giving a low moan. It is another minute before he attempts to look about the gloomy room about him, squinting about with each spark of the wires dangling from the roof above.

He crawls his way over to the twi'lek Jedi, stretching out a hand to the Jedi's pulse. He is dead. Slowly, laboriously, he crawls to the togruta twisted across the workbench. She also shows no signs of life. Finally, he crawls to the dark cloaked figure. Reaching out a hand, he finds a faint pulse, and attempts to sit the figure up.

The figure's eyes flutter and then open blearily. But it seems he can see quite clearly in the gloom, for he takes in the pair of bodies, before glancing sharply at the weequay who supports him.

"Who are you?" asks the weequay in hoarse Basic, "What is this place?"

The cloaked figure seems to stiffen, watching the weequay warily for a moment. Then he seems to relax.

"I don't know," he whispers, his voice raspy, "Wherever it is, though, it is no place to remain. Who are you?"

"Agreed," the weequay nods, helping the figure in getting to his feet, then, after swaying for a moment, "As for my name, I am..." he frowns, rubbing his leathery forehead, "I... I don't remember... anything."

"Neither do I," the cloaked figure says, "Though.... something tells me this is not a good place to be in. Still, since we do not know our names, I suggest we invent some. Calling you 'you' will grow old rather quickly, and it seems to me that we should work together to escape this place."

The weequay seems to consider this, and nods slowly, then almost collapses, and decides to refrain from nodding for the time being.

"What name did you have in mind?" he asks, taking a step toward the doorway.

"Wait," says the cloaked figure, "What is that?"

He staggers over to the cube on the floor, and crouches beside it, lifting it slowly. He stares at it, turning it over, transfixed for a good half minute.

While he examines the cube, the weequay crouches beside the door, picking up what appears to be a gleaming cylinder, twenty centimeters in length and perhaps three or four in diameter. He presses a button on it and a meter long blade of blue light ignites from it.

The cloaked figure snaps out of his reverie at the sound of the lightsaber igniting. He stares at the blade for a moment, then at the hilt. Rising, he stuffs the cube under one arm, and staggers over to another lightsaber hilt, lying by the far wall. This one is a couple of centimeters longer than the one belonging to the weequay, though of similar diameter. He attempts to ignite it, but it merely splutters and dies. He frowns, stuffing the hilt into the folds of his cloak.

The pair exit into the corridor, but have not gone more than a dozen meters down before they hear the sound of padding feet, and at the far end a squad of four, stumpy, ruddy-skinned creatures turn the corridor. They are each dressed in matching grey uniforms of some kind, and each carry a light blaster pistol. The foremost one gives a squeal of either terror or rage when its eyes alight on the weequay, lightsaber ignited before him, and the four of them immediately open fire.

The cloaked figure, unarmed as he is, ducks behind a damaged cylinder which lies in the corridor.

Blasts fly about the corridor, fired from the four creatures. One strikes the cylinder less than a centimeter from the figure's shoulder, while another grazes the weequay's leg, singing his left trouser leg.

With a cry the weequay charges towards his attackers, swinging his lightsaber wildly and slashing one across the chest. With a garbled squeal it crashes to the durasteel floor of the corridor.

Even as the weequay turns to the second of the creatures, a third one shoots at his back. The blast strikes him squarely in the shoulder, and with a grunt his lightsaber switches off and he collapses to the floor. While one of the creatures crouches beside its fallen comrade, the other pair cautiously advance to the cylinder behind which the cloaked figure hides.

Even as the pair round the cylindar, the cloaked figure leaps out, launching a wild kick at the foremost of the creatures. He no longer holds the cube, having tucked it safely behind the cylinder, but even so he trips and staggers forward, crashing into the wall of the corridor. A blast from one of the creatures strikes him in the leg, and another in the ribcage, and with a snarl of mingled pain and rage he falls to his hands and knees.

But then something happens. The figure begins to tremble and the shadows about him begin to reverberate faintly. All at once his head snaps up to glare at the pair of guards from beneath his helmet, and his right arm stretches out. The pair of creatures both pause, seemingly frozen, as the shadow grows, then seems to pass into them. Their skin seems to shrivel slightly, and darkens as if bruised. The pair gasp and stagger forward, their weapons clattering from their grasp. Then they collapse lifelessly to the floor.

The remaining creature gives a squeal of alarm, and, rising from its unconscious companion, it hurries forward, blasting wildly at the cloaked figure. In its panic its blasts fly quite wide.

The cloaked figure seems to have regained a considerable degree of strength, following the outburst. Diving forward, he scoops up one of the blasters of the deceased guards, and fires several shots at the approaching guard. The first blast flies wide, but the second strikes the creature in the chest and it halts with a garbled squeak. A third and fourth blast from the cloaked figure are unnecessary, but ensure that the guard will certainly not be a threat of any kind in this galaxy.

Panting with repressed adrenaline, the cloaked figure scoops up the cube from its hiding place, then staggers over to the unconscious forms of the weequay and the remaining guard. He fires three shots into the guard's chest, before crouching beside the weequay and feeling his pulse. The weequay is alive, and the figure searches the four guard corpses for any means of first aid. He discovers a couple of medpacs, and heads back over to the weequay to attempt to inject them. The first is a miserable attempt, resulting in the healing fluid spraying across the weequay's Jedi tunic. His second attempt is not much better, with the majority of the fluid leaking onto the floor.

The cloaked figure has just withdrawn a third and final medpac, and is preparing to insert it, when he hears a voice from behind him. The voice is masculine, and sounds as if it comes from under a helmet of some sort.

"Not one move."

The cloaked figure, reluctantly, remains where he currently crouches next to the unconscious weequay. He slowly turns his head a few degrees so as to get a glimpse of the newcomer's appearance in the gloom.

The new arrival is a humanoid figure of medium height and build, dressed in a dark blue jumpsuit, with a black space helmet that covers his face. He currently stands around five meters away, legs apart, a blaster rifle trained on the cloaked figure.

"Give me the lightsaber," he demands, jerking his head toward the weapon, "Slowly."

The cloaked figure narrows his eyes beneath his own helmet.

"And just who are you, that you think yourself safe demanding such a weapon from me?"

"I'm Bane Malar," the armored figure replies with a hint of pride, "Perhaps you've heard of me?"

As he speaks, he subtly attempts to probe the cloaked figure's mind.

The cloaked figure senses the attempted intrusion of his mind, and consciously blocks out the armored man. He then attempts to tap into the dark power within him that he used to drain the guards earlier, and stretches out a hand toward the armored man.

The armored man takes a step back, but also consciously blocks the dark energy from invading his mind. He tilts his head to one side, his expression hidden beneath his helmet.

"Try to touch my thoughts a second time, Bane, and I assure you, I will not be merciful," the cloaked figure says, silkily.

"Listen, I don't know who you are or what you want," Bane says carefully, "But perhaps we can come to an arrangement? All I want is that cube you are carrying. And Sora Bulq," he adds as an afterthought as his eyes alight on the weequay Jedi's unconscious form.

Bane seems understandably reluctant to approach, but at length he sighs.

"Fine. But no tricks or funny business," he warns as he crouches beside Sora's form and attempts to inject the medpac.

The cloaked figure watches him, eyes hooded beneath his helmet, and obeys this request.

Bane injects the medpac with great success into Sora, who quickly jolts awake, fumbling for a weapon before relaxing.

"I'm with him," Bane hastily informs Sora, pointing at the cloaked figure.

The weequay, or Sora Bulq, as he appears to be, blinks several times, before glancing blankly at the cloaked figure.

"He is a friend, at least for now. I would not trust him too far though, once we reach his ship. He wants the cube. And you, apparently."

"No, no," Bane says quickly with a nervous laugh, "Just the cube, Sora, just the cube."

Sora continues to stare with bewilderment at Bane as the mercenary rises and begins to make his way down the corridor.

"Come on," Bane hisses to the amnesic pair, "Before more of those-"

But even as he speaks a squad of four more of the stumpy creatures turn about the corridor, and once more, with excited squeaks and squeals, begins firing.

Both Bane's smirk and the cloaked figure's efforts to avoid noticing it cease when a stray blast from one of the creatures strikes the figure in the chest and he collapses back against the cylinder with a garbled cry.

One of the creatures makes a dash forward, as its remaining companion covers it. It clears the side of the cylinder, firing wildly at Bane. Bane manages to dodge the first, albeit narrowly, but the second strikes him squarely in the left shoulder.

Bane gasps in pain, clutching a hand to his wounded shoulder. With his other hand he fires with his rifle, striking the creature which shot him in the chest. The momentum sends its smoking corpse skidding across the floor and into the wall opposite.

"Why do I feel like I'm doing all the work here?" he mutters to Sora, panting.

The remaining Utai advances hesitantly. When it is a couple of meters away, Bane takes a deep breath, leaps up and fires. The Utai does the same, and the pair of them collapse in unison.

Sora continues to sit in the now eerily quite corridor for a minute or so, eyes closed and breathing shallowly. Then he takes a deep breath and with a gasp he rises, staggering over to Bane's body. The mercenary is alive, the final blast having struck his lower abdomen. Sora searches the pouches strapped to the mercenary's belt, and is relieved to discover six medpacs. He then staggers to the cloaked figure, who he is relieved to discover is also alive. With difficulty he fumbles to inject one of the medpacs into the cloaked figure's system. He misses the figure's vein and a red light flashes on the pack. He withdraws a second, trying to steady himself. This time a green light flashes on the pack, and the figure seems to stir.

"Are you all right?" Sora asks.

Sora grins, moving over to Bane. His grin quickly fades as one by one he fails to apply the packs to Bane, leaking bacta all over the mercenary's flight suit.

Zirak watches the last of the medpacs spilling out.

"So, who's carrying him?"

“You grab his arms, I’ll grab his feet,” Sora suggests, retrieving his lightsaber and slinging Bane’s rifle over his shoulder.

“Fair enough,” the cloaked figure responds, retrieving the cube and one of the blaster pistols belonging to the recently deceased creatures.

“So,” Sora pants, once they have Bane dangling in a rather awkward ‘U’ shape between them, his hindquarters skimming the metallic floor of the corridor, “Which direction do you guess his ship might be in?”

“I am not sure,” the cloaked figure says after a slight pause.

”I suppose any direction is better than no direction...”

“We could toss the cube on it?” the cloaked figure suggests.

“It hardly seems wise to go throwing that thing around,” Sora replies, eying the cube with misgiving, “Let us go... this way.”

They continue up the corridor which Sora has selected, passing through what appear to be dormitories. The rooms appear to have been abandoned in a hurry, with drawers open and tables upended. The pair rest Bane on the floor temporarily as they investigate the rooms.

"Of course they didn't have the decency to leave us a single medpac," glowers the cloaked figure, holding up a brown, leather boot, before tossing it aside.

After a minute or so of further searching, the pair return to Bane and continue down the corridor. They have gone barely a dozen meters when the sound of padding feet reaches their ears from around the corner ahead of them.

“Hide!” Sora hisses, guesturing to an overturned crate. The pair quickly stagger over to it, plonking Bane uncermoniously behind it and crouching beside him.

A quartet of the all too familiar creatures turn the corner up ahead. They seem to be debating which way to take, when all of a sudden one gives a squeak, pointing in the direction of the crate, from behind which an incredibly weequay-sized Jedi boot protrudes. Too late the boot attempts to scoot out of sight behind the crate.

There is an obstinate silence in response, before Sora leaps up and fires, using Bane’s rifle, and manages to down one of the creatures. The remaining three fall back to the corner, crouching for cover.

The creatures blasts back at Sora, who is able to duck behind the crate before their blasts can strike him.

The cloaked figure fires from the side of the crate, but his blasts do nothing but scorch the wall of the corridor several meters in front of the creatures.

Sora leaps up and fires once more. His blast strikes a second creature, and it collapses.

"I think I'm getting the hang of-"

"Had to say it, didn't you?" mutters the cloaked figure to Sora’s unconscious form, tossing aside his pistol and picking up the rifle. He then fires, but his blast again does not come close to striking either of the creatures.

Even as he speaks, a blast from one of creatures passes a centimetre from his right ear. A second blast from it’s companion strikes his left rib cage, and only the armor beneath his cloak stops him from being knocked out instantly.

Dropping the rifle, the cloaked figure crouches with his back to the crate, breathing hard.

The creatures fire a couple more shots at the crate. However, when it becomes apparent that the cloaked figure has no intention of showing himself, the pair cautiously advance, blasters raised.

The cloaked figure rises suddenly, right arm outstretched, when the pair are no more than two meters from the crate. The leftmost creature freezes, eyes wide with horror as its skin begins to shrivel and bruise. Its body goes limp, and the horrified look transforms into blankness as the creature collapses. Once again the cloaked figure seems to revive somewhat, breathing quickly.

The remaining creature's eyes widen in terror as it watches its companion collapse. But it seems to realise running will do it little good, given the cloaked figure's comparative size. It fires wildly at the figure.

Moving swiftly, the cloaked figure snatches up Sora's lightsaber from the weequay's belt. He then leaps at the creature, impaling it in a single stroke. He stands for a moment longer, lightsaber ignited and breathing quickly as the creature collapses. At length he switches off the blue-hued blade and crouches to search the creatures, finding four medpacs. As the bacta fluid is already pulsing through Sora's system, he heaves the weequay to the side to get to Bane. He manages to strike a vein on his first attempt, and the mercenary awakens with a jolt.

"Wait, there's something different about this room..."

"Where is your ship?" the cloaked figure asks briskly, heaving Sora over his shoulders with some difficulty.

"This way," Bane replies evasively, lifting himself up groggily and beginning to stumble off down the corridor once more.

The pair continue to make their way out of the facility, Bane leading the way. It is not far, and they meet no further squads of the creatures. The door at the entrance stands open when they arrive. The cloaked figure gets a glimpse of an industrial looking city outside, built into the sides of a giant, rocky sinkhole. Outside, they notice that a barrier has been set up at the entrance, and a dozen of the stumpy creatures stand about, discussing with each other and occasionally gesturing to the entrance. Even as Bane and the cloaked figure watch, the creatures are joined by a squad of four taller aliens, almost two meters in height, wearing red battle armor and carrying some sort of blasters crossed with axes.

"Blast," mutters Bane, "They've got the entire area locked down. Well, we won't be getting out that way. Change of plan. You still have that lightsaber?"

The cloaked figure exhibits the weapon in answer.

"Good," Bane nods approvingly, "This way."

Bane leads the way back into the facility. He takes a corridor to the right, and then follows it all the way down to a storage room at the far end. The storage room is empty, and appears to have been ransacked at some point, with empty crates and canisters strewn about the place.

Bane raises a hand for silence as they reach the room, and stands still, as if listening. After a moment he seems satisfied.

"There," he says, pointing to the wall to their right, "Cut through it."

The cloaked figure does not hesitate. Slinging Sora's unconscious form onto the ground beside him, he activates the weequay's blue lightsaber, and jams it into the wall, slowly moving it in a circular shape of a meter or so diameter.

It does not take more than half a minute for the circular hole to be completed. Once it is complete, the cloaked figure deactivates his lightsaber, and Bane steps forward and gives the separated piece of the wall a kick. With a loud crash it falls out into the room beyond.

"And that is what is known as 'making an entrance',"  Bane says, rather impressed with himself.

Peering through the newly formed entrance, the pair are met by a couple of dozen of the stumpy creatures, all of whom are staring at them in shock. These creatures are not wearing the uniforms of those that have previously attacked them. These ones wear an assortment of outfits, ranging from overalls to vests to dresses. The room in which the entrance leads appears to be a restaurant of some kind, as almost all the creatures are seated at tables, with various plates of what they consider food before them. All of them seem to have frozen in shock.

"Don't mind us," Bane says pleasantly, replacing the cut piece of wall after he and the cloaked figure have dragged Sora through.

One of the creatures, possibly the proprietor of the establishment, has recovered himself by this stage, and has hurried forward, squealing and squeaking indignantly at the intruders.

"Of course. We understand completely," Bane says placatingly, glancing at the cloaked figure.

"Should we kill it?" the figure suggests, unhelpfully.

"No, no," Bane says firmly, "Let us focus for now on getting out of here."

The figure shrugs, slinging Sora onto his shoulders once more before following after Bane.

The creature continues to squeak and squeal, gesturing angrily to the recently remodeled wall.

"Yes, yes," says Bane impatiently, ducking past the creature, "Don't tempt me to set my friend on you."

Attempting vainly to catch hold of Bane as he passes, the creature steps firmly in the way of the cloaked figure, hands on its hips.

"Fine by me," says the figure coldly, balancing Sora while he draws the lightsaber, raising it above the head of the stumpy creature.

At the sight of the reactivated lightsaber, the creature seems to think better of its decision, and quickly falls back with a terrified squeak.

"Wise choice," the cloaked figure says coolly, deactivating the lightsaber as he moves after Bane.

Bane has already reached the door, and peers outside.

"Clear," he calls back, moving out.

The cloaked figure follows him out, sneering at the creatures as he passes.

"Back, back, back!" Bane calls suddenly, turning and shoving the cloaked figure back into the restaurant.

The reason for this becomes clear a moment later, as a pair of the red armored warriors come into view, striding past the establishment.

Bane waits for them to pass, before cautiously peering out once more.

"This area is crawling with them," he mutters.

"How far is your ship?" the figure asks, ever of a one track mind.

"Not far," Bane replies, "It's on a platform one level below us. Assuming it hasn't been confiscated already."

The cloaked figure's free hand clenches dangerously.

"Which I'm sure it hasn't," Bane adds hastily, "Utapauan authorities are not the most effective force in the galaxy."

"Then let's go," the cloaked figure says impatiently.

"Now, now, let's not be impatient."

"Perhaps you would like to try carrying him for a bit?" the figure jerks his head at Sora's form, slung across his back.

"A fair point," Bane acknowledges, "All right, let's-"

Before he can finish speaking, a squad of four of the red armored warriors hurry into view, heading right for the restaurant. Behind them scurry a dozen of the stumpy creatures.

"Now what, genius?" the cloaked figure growls to Bane.

"Back into the facility?" Bane suggests, backing towards the wall.

"I'm starting to think I should take my chances on my own."

"Garbage chute!" Bane suddenly suggests, pointing to the nearby chute triumphantly.

"Garbage chute?" the figure repeats, skeptically.

"Garbage chute," Bane repeats, firmly.

At that moment the four warriors and their stumpy companions enter the restaurant, glance about.

The proprietor points to Bane and the figure with a squeak.

"Garbage chute," the figure agrees.

The warriors are already charging toward the injured pair, weapons raised. Their leader calls to them in Basic.

"Halt! Drop your weapons!"

The figure ignores the captain, shrugging off Sora's body into the garbage chute. He then takes a breath and leaps in after him.

"I said halt!" calls the captain to Bane.

"Try 'no'," Bane salutes him before leaping in after the cloaked figure.

The captain reaches the chute a moment later, wrinkling his nose as he peers in after them. He then slams his fist against the side.

"Get a squad down there," he instructs one of the warriors, "If they survived I want them in custody before the day is out."

The warrior salutes and hurries from the restaurant.

The proprietor hurries over and tosses a plate of a foul smelling liquid into the garbage chute after the party with a malicious squeak.

Meanwhile, far below, the cloaked figure lands atop a wet and squishy pile of decomposing food, slides down the side at a rapid pace, then knocks his head against something hard and solid. The world goes black around him and he remembers no more.
