Here is where we can chat about whatever the wind blows our way, be it game stuff, non-game stuff, semi-game stuff, cats, corporate bylaws, plants native to a region, what happened in the 2nd Matrix... you know what I'm saying.

However, if it's character development and connection related, please direct it to the Cast of characters, discussions, and connections thread.

In reply to the Game Master (msg # 1):

Hi everyone! I'm looking forward to playing with you all.  I've played a good deal of Numenera/Cypher System before, and a fair amount of Play-by-Post, but this will be my first rpol.net game. So I apologize in advance for any awkwardness I display around our first dice roll or combat, for example!

Anyway, I'm playing Sybella, the Mystical Nano Who Crafts Illusions.  I've already started speaking to Lux about character connections, actually (thanks for reaching out, Lux!).  I'd be happy to talk about interconnecting backstories with the other players as well.

Anywho, just wanted to say hi!

Hi everyone!

This isn't my first rodeo on RPoL, by any means. But it is my first go at Numenera, so please - be patient with me. :)

Sy's right, I have outreached to other players. I actually reached out to everyone, because that's just the friendly person I am. I have worked out a link with 2/3 of those of us here - so I'm a little ahead of the game on that front.

Also, ST - the top topic is currently closed for reply?

OOC thread

Happy day, my fellow players... or should I say Iadace!

It looks like for the most part backgrounds have been created, introductions have been made, character sheets have been completed, and connections have been formed. I know there are a few more bits of logistics that need to be stitched up, no worries there.

Having said that, we're almost at the point where we can get rolling on this wonderful adventure! Before we do, I want to make sure you all feel ready enough to begin. We'll proceed even if there's still some unfinished business with character creation, as long as it's nothing critical to gameplay that can be buttoned up before we get too far underway.

As you all know, the PCs are undertaking the Wandering Walk. Here's how I define the Wander:

quote:
The Wander is not necessarily a physical path. It is indeed a path, but it is more than just metaphorical or symbolic. It is a path unique to each party, determined by the internal impetus that compels each Peregrine to undertake the Walk. When a group of Peregrines come together to travel the Wander, it is their common bond that reveals each leg of their journey, each destination before them. Save for perhaps on a metaphysical level, the Wander is not predetermined.

While the Wander does lead each person to discoveries of interestingly strange and fascinating people, creatures, environs, and wonders from previous Worlds, more importantly it leads each person to self discovery, greater self-awareness, and personal growth.

In addition to GM Intrusions and adventure milestones and discoveries, I will award XP based on demonstration of personal growth and self discovery your PCs gain through their pilgrimage. After all, that's why they're undertaking it, true? From the personalities, backgrounds, and motivations you have all provided, this is the perfect group to develop this rather nicely!

Let me know if there's anything you need to do before we get started. I'll give you heads up before we actually kick things off. Happy adventuring... and most of all, have fun!!!

You can post as often as you like, especially if you're doing dialog between PCs. However, when making any decisions, make sure you leave some breathing room so other players can weigh in with their PCs.

If you want to be able to move the story forward without having to wait for a quorum or consensus on smaller decisions, you may want to consider choosing a de facto leader to make those decisions. Not completely necessary, just a suggestion.

With combat, we'll want to wait for everyone to take an action. If there is a gap in posting from a player during combat I may end up NPCing a character to keep things moving.

OOC thread

the Game Master:
Your party has come together to undertake the sojourn known as The Wandering Walk. Collectively, you feel you have been called to travel The Beyond for this incredible journey.

You had begun your journey in the Cold Desert past the southernmost point of the Black Riage. You feel compelled (each of you to one degree or another) to travel the Wander into the region of the Beyond that lies east of the Black Riage.

You have travelled through Seshar and are now making your way to the Ba-Adenu forest. You’ve chosen to traverse the narrower part of the forest near the southeast which only extends roughly 300 kilometers across. Any further to the west and you risk venturing into the more dangerous swamps, where many predators lie in wait and tales of the Untethered Legion deter even the heartiest of glaives.

After many days of traveling the plains your provisions have run dangerously low. Travelers you have encountered say that the towns throughout this part of the forest are sparse at best, so you will need to be sufficiently stocked with food, water, and other essentials before embarking on the trek. Fortunately you have been given directions to Adderstal, a village which lies just at the outer edge of the Ba-Adenu Forest.

the Game Master:
As you turn away from the market toward the town center, you see an empty water reservoir with a pedestal where the condenser must have previously sat. Without any water readily available, it appears the town’s problem has now become yours as well.

the Game Master:
~~ GM INTRUSION ~~

A GM Intrusion is an unforeseen challenge introduced to the current situation.
When the GM introduces a GM intrusion to a player, the player can choose whether or not to accept it.
If the player accepts the intrusion, she is awarded 2 XP, 1 of which she keeps and the other she has to give to another player of her choosing.
If the player declines the intrusion, they may mitigate the challenge at the cost of 1 XP they currently have.

As for the unforeseen challenge of the missing fresh water supply...  WE ACCEPT!  ;)

On the other hand I can use edge only once for each action. So, are each dodge different action or is it one whole big synced dodge, maybe harder ?

Sybella is using Onslaught.

You can as long as one is trained in the type of attack the other is using, then they can perform a complimentary attack of a different type to gain +2 on the roll. They both have to be targeting the same opponent.

So we can get the bonus either way?

I am not a mechanics expert, but am I correct in my assumption that a target would be defeated more quickly if we used the same type of attack (both mental or both physical), so that we can knock one stat down to zero together ASAP?

What type of armor (if any) are these thugs wearing?

My impression is that they probably have more Might than Intelligence... but Onslaught does EITHER 4 physical damage OR 2 mental damage (ignoring armor), right?

Based upon previous experience, would a physical or mental attack be more effective?

I am also assuming that it is better to concentrate on a common target and even out the numbers ASAP, so that they will have fewer folks attacking us...

Re: OOC thread

Yes, you can get the bonus either way.

The target would be defeated more quickly anyway if you both make successful hits on him/her whether or not you do a complimentary attack. The advantage to the complimentary attack is to ensure your success in hitting the target. The +2 gets you that much closer to the DT target.

The bandits have 1 armor and are level 2. You are correct in how the damage works for either attack. Enemies generally don't have individual stats like PCs, they just have health points (in this case 3x level). A successful physical attack will do 3 points of damage (4 - 1 armor) and physical will do 2. In this case, physical makes more sense.

Eliminating each enemy more quickly will reduce the number of attacks against you, true. It depends on how much damage you can do. A medium weapon can take out a bandit in to successful rounds. Also, each PC gets +1 bonus if 3 or more PCs attack a single target.

How much do you have to spend for Effort to get how much increase for Damage?  :o

Both bandits attacking Serren have axes.

At Tier 1 Effort always costs 3 in the ability being used, so 3 Intellect (minus whatever Edge you have in Intellect) to deal 3 additional points of damage using Onslaught.

The rod and the crystal are both oddities.  Your knowledge in numenera doesn't help you glean any function or use currently, but they both appear to certainly carry some intrinsic value.

Yes, I can heal any stat pool, though each stat pool requires a separate healing attempt.  :)

Each healing attempt increases the difficulty level of subsequent healing attempts on that patient until the patient has rested.  :o

No worries on my end, as I have no limit.  It doesn't cost me anything to heal (unless I expend Effort).

The only limitation is that the difficulty of subsequent attempts keeps increasing, so if you get injured again later, it will be harder and harder to heal you further until after you rest.

You get 4 recovery rolls per day. Each roll requires the stated amount of time to rest in order to recover:
  1. 1 action
  2. 10 minutes
  3. 1 hour
  4. 10 hours

With each recovery roll you roll 1d6 + your tier (currently 1d6 +1 for you). You can distribute the points recovered among your stats however you like.

As Charis is continually sensing for the emotional states of the creatures assume their state hasn't changed from what she's picked up. If and when their emotional state changes, I'll definitely specify it in the narrative. The drawings in the dirt haven't given them any cause to feel any differently at this point.

"What's it like being an Aeon priest? Is that something I could do? Would I want to?"

"Oh and how do these tattoos work, anyway? Do you give them to many people?"

"How long have you been in this town? Do you like it? Are they nice? Where'd you come from? Where would you go if you could fo anywhere? 'Cause, I can go anywhere. I think."

Re: OOC thread

I assume that we (or at least the older party members) would have already had a chance to compare our cyphers, in order to know what combined resources we have in case of some violent clash...

Meanwhile, our newest member is standing right next to me.

Therefore, shall we compare notes?  What cyphers do we currently have?  Should we trade in any of them for the ones Huni has?  Remember whatever limits your character has regarding how many cyphers can be carried at a time...

Current Cyphers of Charis:
Cypher – Remote Viewer
Level: 3
Usable: Device that splits into two parts when activated, one with a glass screen
Effect: For one hour, the glass screen on one part shows everything going on in the vicinity of the other part, regardless of the distance between the two parts.

Cypher – Gas Bomb
Level: 7
Wearable: Wristband projector (long range)
Usable: Explosive device or ceramic sphere (thrown, short range) or handheld projector (long range)
Effect: Bursts in a poisonous cloud within an immediate distance. The cloud lingers for 1d6 rounds unless conditions dictate otherwise.
Effect: Thick smoke: occludes sight while the cloud lasts.

Cypher – Hunter/Seeker
Level: 3
Wearable: Arm- or shoulder-mounted launcher
Usable: Complex device, handheld device
Effect: With long-range movement, this intelligent missile tracks and attacks a specified target (target must be within sight when selected). If it misses, it continues to attack one additional time per cypher level until it hits. For example, a level 4 hunter/seeker will attack a maximum of five times. Bears a poisoned needle that inflicts 3 points of damage plus poison.

BTW, what is the current status regarding Serren and/or possible new PCs?  :o

Re: OOC thread

Just a reminder... Sybella will be joining you at the Cheris house in the morning after her tattoos are finished, so she'll get a chance to look through the pile as well. At that point you can compare and decide between yourselves what you may want to trade with Huni.

Serren hasn't checked in since the end of November, so I'm bringing a couple more players on. I'm in discussion with one now who is coming up with a character concept to fit the group. I have a Wanted - Players post that has been waiting to open up again to bump (it should be open now) where I was going to try to solicit one more, bringing our party up to 5.

Now that you've looked through the stuff behind Huni's house, I'd like to move forward to the next morning so Sybella can meet up with you at the house. Once there she can look through his stuff if she'd like, the three of you can decide if you want to make any trades, then we'll get whomever wants to be tattooed over to see Kuipania. How does that sound?

If the tattoo won't interfere with wearing armor (even though the Armor bonuses won't stack), Quellan would like one.  Wearing her armor is tiring, and if we're attacked while sleeping or in a situation when she isn't wearing armor, she'd like to be protected.

Correct, the tattoos won't interfere with armor. The armor negates the benefit of the tattoos when worn.

Each person's tattoo takes the better part of a day so if Charis and Quellan will both be getting tattoos you'll be in town for at least two more days.

Re: OOC thread

I'd like to get our pace back up in the game, it's slowing a bit. Here's where we currently are:

  • Charis is getting tattooed. This will take most of the day.
  • Sybella is keeping Charis company while she is getting tattooed.
  • Quellan is going to look for Serren and bring Amyron with her. She wants to check in with Sybella first.
  • Amyron is going to accompany Quellan and is looking forward to meet the rest of the party.
  • Serren is MIA.

Let's see if we can get the party regrouped and do some fast-forwarding to get us there. At this point we can fast-forward the tattooing RP that Charis and Sybella are involved in. If Quellan still wants to get tattooed we'll figure out where to work that in and we'll move quickly through that as well.

Go ahead and post your next actions IC or let me know OOC what you'd like your characters to do.

I'd like to get us back to daily/every other day posting if possible. Let me know if that pace might be tricky for you.

Re: OOC thread

I'm fine doing a summary of what's going on.

Short version for Quellan - introduce Amyron to Charis and Sybella, ask them what's up with Serren, go looking for him if they don't know if he's ok.  If we can't find anything today, Quellan (and Amyron) would likely go back to consult with Charis and Sybella.  While Quellan would like to get the tattoo, she doesn't want to leave her new friends out wandering the wilderness on their own.

I can post roughly the equivalent of every other day - I work a schedule where I work two days (for 12 hours), then am off two days.  Every other weekend I work three days, the opposite weekend I'm off three days.  So I'll do more posting on days off, little to none on days on.

Re: OOC thread

That all sounds good. Amyron, in light of your being out town (and country?) this week, how would you like to do the intros with Charis and Sybella?

If we want to RP the search for Serren we'd just need to figure out what to have Sybella and Charis do while that search is happening. That or we just do light RP and move through it.

Unless there are any questions Quellan has for Kuipania during her tattoo session we could probably fast forward through that too. There's really not much more to be gained within the town of Adderstal itself; it's a sleepy little aldeia with not much going on. The missing condenser is probably the most exciting thing to have happened to them since anyone remembers.

Thanks for the update on the schedule, Quellan. That's no problem, easy enough to go with. :) We can adjust accordingly during your long weekends.

Re: OOC thread

Just out of interest, how are we playing recovery rolls? Do they recover each day, or only after ten hours' sleep? That is, if I only get six hours' sleep, I could clearly use my first three recovery rolls for the day in one go, but when I wake up can I go back to having a 1 action recovery roll? Or is it that I need a ten hour-rest to reset the cycle (even if I don't need the recovery rolls to replenish my stat pools). The wording in the rulebook is a bit ambiguous, and I've known different GMs interpret it in different ways.

I'm guessing it makes no difference for tonight, since I'm assuming we'll get the rest we need. I'd just like to be aware before I start flaring off recovery rolls later on!

Re: OOC thread

I do it on a case-by-case basis. If you generally bed down somewhere I assume you've gotten your 10 hours and reset recovery rolls the next day. Even if a PC gets 6 hours sleep they will often be eating and doing leisure activities to make up the balance of that 10 hour rest, is how I see it.

This will be the case here. All recovery rolls will have reset the next day.

So in short, if you foresee being able to bed down or camp easily and safely, it will be a next day reset. If the gameplay makes you uncertain if you'll be able to get the rest, be conservative with the recovery rolls or just take a chance on it.

Chairs I’m pretty sure that’s not how empathic works.  It makes you trained in doing what you want but you still need to roll for it.  Unless of course that’s how it’s been played so far because that’s a different story.

I will say Vioan isn’t concealing any emotions and if you read closely you can probably figure out exactly what he is feeling.  If you want me to spell it out I think a roll might be appropriate.  That said, I’m not trying to rock the boat so if empathic has been treated as a window into the soul in the past I will happily spill the beans.

Re: OOC thread

Empathic:
You receive information in a more direct way, feeling a person’s emotions as if they were tangible things, sensations that lightly brush against your mind.

Well, it has been a window into the soul thus far... but that has been for NPCs.

This is the first time it has come up for PC to PC interactions.  So we are actually on new ground.  And the GM thinks they are not necessarily the same, which I do not find fault with.

With PCs pointing weapons in a lingering way, that concerned Charis enough to try to sense just what undercurrents were there emotionally.

As far as how to handle Empathic senses with other PCs, I suspect that fun and fair would be two priorities.  Therefore, how would you folks like to have it work?

Some folks might like the opportunity to emote inwardly, yet have that detected automatically.

Other folks might want to keep their beans from being automatically spilled.

What consensus can we come up with that will maximize enjoyability for you folks?   :)

Re: OOC thread

Like I said, I didn’t want to open a can of worms and I just brought it up because it seemed a very powerful ability for a descriptor.

That said, the text you quoted is the flavor text for empathic not the mechanics.  The mechanics just make you trained in detecting emotions and a few other things which is why I mentioned the roll.  Technically when there are contested rolls both PCs roll, add 3 if they are trained in the skill or have an asset or whatever and highest roll succeeds.

In theory the roll is there when detecting npc emotions too though perhaps you would only roll if you were trying to make out someone’s emotions when they were trying to deceive you or at least you thought they were.

I have no problem telling you the emotions that I am portraying.  If you don’t believe me then I think we should roll off.

Re: OOC thread

I don't have a problem with just stating what's going through Amyron's head, and I think if there were a situation where Amyron were trying to deceive Charis I wouldn't have a problem with stating that you needed to make a roll. I'm easier going with deception between characters than deception between players, if that makes sense.

A less simple option (which would mean Charis wouldn't know if a player was putting up resistance) would be for Charis to make a hidden roll any time you wanted to check someone's feelings. The player in question could then put in a private line stating their real feelings and a hidden roll to the GM if they weren't the same as the ones they'd posted - along with what emotion they were trying to project. The GM could then ignore Charis' roll if the player wasn't trying to hide anything (unless they're really keen on intrusions... :D), or notify Charis of the truth if she succeeded. That way, the player would know whether they'd pulled off the deception successfully, and the GM would send a PL to Charis to tell her what she had sensed.

Re: OOC thread

I like Quellan's idea best, since it has a nice combination of simplicity plus fidelity to what I envision for an Empathic character.

However, I suspect that it will be easier to build a mutually agreeable consensus by finding the most restrictive common ground, rather than the least restrictive.

Therefore, I suspect that Amyron's Less Simple Option has the best potential.  That looks like one possible way to concretely implement Vioan's last paragraph, if I am understanding clearly enough.

Am I interpreting the preferences for you folks correctly?  All things considered, is Amyron's Less Simple Option an option that everyone would be happy and content with?

Your feedback is most welcome.  :)

I ask because due to range limitations you won't be able to scan everything in the room in one fell swoop. I mean, if nothing else, Quellan's getting into this whole adventuring thing, so she's up for getting herself into a crystal and going "wheeeee!" over the edge to see what's what down there, but she would like the option of getting up again...  So, if someone could just dangle a rope or whatnot, she'll time her transformation for about ten minutes longer than it took the glowglobe to descend, and wait for someone to chuck her down the shaft.

What would be the odds that I could climb down the last bit, if I were lowered on a rope? And climb back to the rope again, of course!

Re: OOC thread

It's like a half-day back to town, and Serren has been missing for, what two days at this point?  I think our initial plan was to find him on the assumption that when he was going around the back of the living automaton's cave in our initial approach, he got lost or trapped or kidnapped or something.  We didn't want to go back to town for rope because of the time we'd lose, and also we weren't sure if anyone in town had 300' feet of rope anyways.

I believe the last time we had a lengthy discussion about rope (pun intended), we were talking about harvesting the cording from the things Vioden emerged from.  One other person (Amyron, I believe) had some rope on him, not enough to reach the bottom, but enough in this instance to let me make a return trip to the opposite side of the shaft, go to the Vioden vessels, do some scavenging, and come back with a big ol' haul of "let's get to the bottom of this".

Amyron's throw nearly gets the crystal to the other side of the shaft, but falls a bit short, hitting the top inside edge of the shaft instead. The crystal ricochets off the side of the shaft and begins descending steadily downward into its darkness.

That sounds like "being dropped hard on the ground" to me...?  :)

Understandable, it's been awhile. Lucky I found the map I made. :)

Currently Amyron and Charis are in the 30x60m chamber with the spheres that took your memories. There is no exit in this chamber save from the one you came in, that crosses over the shaft with the automatons on the other side. There is a grate on the floor of the chamber they're in.

In short, you are correct.

Unless I can find a way to deactivate the automatons, lure them away, cage them, or drop-kick them into the shaft...

Hmm, I should see if I can salvage some cyphers or something around here. I realize I don't have any, and those could help turn the tide.  I don't relish trying to engage both automatons physically.  Or if there's a way to conceal Amyron and Charis?  I don't know if the automatons are detecting them based on proximity, heat, vision, or something else.

The automatons have only fired on Charis or Amyron when they've had a visual on them. If they are out of their line of sight through the entryway they don't respond.

Did you not ever get any cyphers or did you use them all? I'll have to read back if you don't remember...

The Memory Gel makes a handy shield (strong as steel), but how heavy will it be (does it retain the same weight as the unused cannister of the stuff)? Could we throw a rope across to Quellan Cet and hold up the memory gel in front of us as we climb across (assuming we can find suitable places to anchor it)?

So after months of thinking (honest! though life has been extra busy), my plan is still to aim a rope across the gap, and for Charis and Amyron to slide across, using the memory gel to create a shield to protect them from the shots.

All I need is somewhere on each side to anchor it. GM, I have fifteen metres of rope. Would that be enough to get us across?
