In reply to Marshal (msg # 1):

Earnest doffs his hat as he enters the house and smiles in return to the old man's nod. When the young woman enters he addresses her.

"Buenos Tardes," he replies in a dreadful Yanqui accent, "I'm Earnest Allgood. I'm looking for a room and board. You were recommended by Albert Cooper."

The young woman smiles and nods. ”We have some rooms available, señor. But they are on the third floor. If climbing the stairs is no trouble, I think you would find them to your liking.”

She motions for Allgood to follow her, leading him down a hallway. ”We ask three dollars each day from those who stay. That includes all meals: breakfast, dinner, and supper. One of us usually keeps some coffee brewed throughout the day. Some of our guests like to have it at different times.”

“We will change the linens and launder them. We just ask that you keep the room in order. Our casa...it is like a family house. We treat those who stay with us like guests in our own home.”

She stops at the foot of a staircase. ”I am Patricia Montaño,” she says, extending her hand. Señora Montaño, my mother, she will want to meet you. She likes to become acquainted with all of our boarders. What brings you to Lincoln, señor?”

In reply to Marshal (msg # 3):

"Three dollars a day?" he repeats, as he takes the proffered hand. It sounds steep to Earnest, who was thinking of something like three a week. But it does include meals. He follows along to view the room.

Patricia seems to sense the minister’s hesitation. ”Talk to mi madre before you decide. She has helped many who have come to Lincoln to make their start here. If your business here is for the betterment of the people here, I can promise she will help you along.” She laughs, a gentle sound in the narrow stairwell. Señor Ellis, across the road, he still comes upon difficult seasons now and again. We always feed him when times are hard.”

The young woman leads Allgood up to a corner room on the third floor. It is spacious, with a bed, washbasin, wardrobe, and a desk, upon which a kerosene lamp has been placed. Patricia gestures to the desk. ”Forgive me if I have misjudged you, but you seem to me to be a studious man. Someone who reads and writes often. I thought the desk might be useful to you.”

Earnest looks around the roomk approvingly.

"This is certainly a pleasant room, Señorita.

"Actually, I am a Methodist minister. I came prepared to assist Reverend Benton in his church, but I've learned he has apparently moved on. I've offered my services to the congregation. If they accept my offer, I may have use of the parsonage, but for the present, I would like to settle here."

Patricia regards Allgood with a newfound respect. ”You will definitely need to speak to mi madre regarding your stay here. She will want to help you find your place in Lincoln.”

“Reverend Benton was loved by many here in the valley. When he disappeared, many people were shaken. Some traveled from other towns like San Patricio and La Junta on Sundays to hear his sermons. He provided hope to many.”

“After what happened with the school...with the children...Lincoln needs hope more than ever. It is good that you have come.”

The young woman’s expression darkens. ”I have only heard some of the story. My mother knows much more. But several children...disappeared. They were taken from the school, in the middle of the afternoon. No one is certain who precisely took them, but I have heard that some of the parents have been told that if they cease their talk about some of the things that have happened here recently, their sons and daughters will be safely returned to them.”

Her gaze falls to the floor. ”It is terrible. One of the worst things that has happened here. Even worse than Reverend Benton...or Señor Tunstall being killed. Many people are afraid.”

The young woman opens her mouth to answer, then hesitates. She pauses a beat, then replies softly, Señor Murphy and Señor Dolan. And the men who work for them.”

Footsteps sound on the stairs. Patricia’s expression brightens. A handsome woman in a blue dress enters the room, regarding Allgood curiosly. ”Patricia,” she says, ”We have a new boarder?”

Si. This is Reverend Allgood. He has come to work at Reverend Benton’s church.”

The woman smiles warmly. Extending her hand, she says, “Reverend, I am happy to make your acquaintance. I am Renata Montaño. You have come at a time when your ministration are most needed.”

"Thank you, Señora, I trust the elders will agree. I have not yey applied to them. I should remedy that right now and look up Mr. Kibbee. I'll ask Mr. Ellis to send over my things from his livery."

He reaches into his billfold and extracts three dollar bills, extending them to the ladies.

Patricia accepts the money without counting it.

"We will have a place set for you," Renata Montaño says.

The cool mist still fills the air as Algood exits the boarding house. The walk to the Assay Office is a short one and, upon arrival, a dark haired, heavyset man that Allgood presumes to be the assayer, directs him through an open doorway that leads to the rear of the building.

There, Allgood finds Albert Cooper conversing with a bespectacled man in an ink stained work shirt. The center of the room is occupied by a well used printing press, crates of blank paper sitting open beside it.

OOC: I'm going to move Reverend Allgood back to Albert Cooper's current thread, so he can join the conversation there.

Ike Ellis confirms that Patricia Montaño came over a short time ago and that she and one of his hands delivered the Reverend’s luggage to the boarding house.

When Allgood enters the front door of the Patron House, he is greeted with the inviting scent of cooking food. The same older gentleman he observed earlier is still seated in the common room, his attention absorbed by the book he is reading. He pauses as the minister steps inside, nodding and offering a polite, ”Afternoon.”

The older man places a finger between the pages of his book to hold his place temporarily. Allgood notes from the cover that the volume is Luther’s Commentary on the Epistle to the Galatians.

”Benjamin Tunstall,” he says, ”I think you’ll find the accommodations here quite agreeable. The Montaños treat those that stay with them like family. It’s made my business here considerably easier.”

”The Governor? I have to confess, I hadn’t even consider bringing John’s death to the attention of the Territorial Government,” he says. ”Sheriff Brady has assured me repeatedly that he is diligently looking into John’s demise and feels confident that he will catch the individual responsible. He’s told me that he has some suspicion that it was one of John’s own employees at the ranch.” He shakes his head. ”I fear my nephew always strove to see the best in people, which may have blinded him to their faults.”

“Having told you all that, I must be honest. I am from Austin. I am a tailor there. I know very little of New Mexico or matters of law. I take it you are not as confident in the Sheriff’s efforts?”

Allgood has just finished a second chapter when Patricia raps politely on his door, informing him that dinner is served downstairs.

21:12, Today: Marshal, on behalf of Rev. Earnest Allgood, rolled 5,7 using 1d6,1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 5,(6+1)7.  Notice.

As he sets the novel on his desk, the Reverend gets a glimpse of the street through his window, noticing a small group of people gathered in front of the schoolhouse. Although the light is fading from the sky, Allgood can make out Albert Cooper, Bryan Lee, and a man in the attire of a Catholic Priest among them.

Stepping into the hallway, Allgood is greeted with the tempting scent of a recently cooked meal, wafting up from the kitchen below.

When Allgood emerges onto the porch of the Patron House and moves into the street, he notices that the group he had observed in front of the schoolhouse appears to have entered the building itself. The door stands open, the chain and lock that had secured it laying on the steps. From within the dark structure, Allgood can see the shifting glow of lantern light.

OOC: I’m going to move Allgood over to the schoolhouse thread. You can pick up the narrative there.
