IIIA - Dead Weight

The Courthouse is eerily quiet as Bauer pushes open the door to the Sheriff’s office. Leading Lee and Cooper down a short corridor, the three reach a square room furnished with a small table and a pair of desks, lit by a single lantern suspended from a beam in the low ceiling. Several wanted posters adorn the walls, along with a map of Lincoln County and a painting of a coyote on a sunlit hillside.

William Brady is seated at the table across from a short haired man in his late twenties. The two are midway through a game of chess. Brady’s eyebrows raise in surprise as the group enters and he smiles. ”Well, good evening,” he says, standing, ”Usually the only company we get on these nights are belligerent drunks.” He looks from Bauer to Lee. ”Is everything alright in town?”

"Please, don't let us interrupt you, Sheriff. Everything's alright, as far as I know anyhow. We were just passin' some time at the saloon, and figured you could use some company," he said.

He smiled at the other gentleman, and looked about the place, his senses all on edge as if waiting for some sign that something was amiss. He was also curious as to who was winning the chess game.

OOC:

Notice: 10

Since Lee is expecting trouble, I made the roll in advance of needing it, as he's keenly attuned for signs that something is amiss.

11:54, Today: Bryan Lee rolled 4,10 using d6,d6, rerolling max.  Notice.

Cooper shrugged. "S'pose we can be belligerent if ya like. Ain't drunk yet, though."

Albert nodded at what the Ranger had to say as he walked over close to the chess game. He gestured at the white side. "Ya need ta develop yer minor pieces a bit earlier. Otherwise yer just makin' targets fer yer opponent ta gun down."

The short haired man who is seated at the table frowns at the chessboard, then looks up at Cooper. ”I just thought the object was to throw everythin’ you had at the king.”

The sheriff smiles at Cooper’s offer of belligerency. ”I only introduced him to the game a week ago,” he explains.

Looking back to Lee, he says, ”I would welcome the company, Ranger. Besides those that overindulge in spirits, it seems I always need to be present in town on these evenings to reassure someone who has a fright, either real or, most often, imagined.”

“I would be remiss, however, if I didn’t tell you that there are far better places to pass the night. Miss Thornton’s is always hospitable, as is the Patron House. On most of these evenings, the Ramseys keep a pot of coffee on and some soup warmed.”
He sweeps his hand to indicate the spare room. ”I’m afraid what you see here, is all the luxury we can offer. Though I will make some coffee in a bit, when drowsiness takes hold.”

"You've named at least a couple of my favorite spots in town right there. Say Sheriff is that..." he pointed at one of the Wanted posters on the wall and walked up towards it as if to beckon Brady closer, and then spoke to the lawman in a quieter tone.

"Pardon the ruse, Sheriff. I'm not familiar with your guest, though I'm sure he's a fine man. I received a tip from a source that informs me that there might be trouble tonight, here. Could you tell me what are all the entrances to this building, and who else might be here at the moment besides those of us in this room?"

Albert tipped his head from side-to-side at the response from the short-haired man. "Ain't always like that, no. Sometimes you gotta make sure ya ain't bein' flanked before ya take yer shot at the king. And when ya do, ya better bring enough bullets with ya ta take that sumbitch down. Ain't nutin' worse'n showin' up ta take down the bad guy without enough firepower."

Albert looked over at the pair that were conversing more silently, then went back to studying the position. "Gotta avoid over-extendin' yerself, too. Seen more'n one fella on the attack only ta get suprised by the counter."

Brady's eyebrows raise. "Well, Deputy Diaz is somewhat new to the badge, but he's done nothing to make me mistrust him."

"Aside from him and myself, there's only Jeraldo Guzman, who's in the jail. He's a farmhand who lives in San Patricio. Does work for several people there. Everytime he gets paid, he comes to Lincoln and gets drunk. Most times, we end up locking him up until he sobers."

"That's all. Just us three."

Diaz studies the board again, then scratches his head. "I just thought you stayed on the attack, you know? But...it hasn't worked worth a damn. You really seem to know how it all works."

"Could you spare some time to teach me one afternoon? I don't want the Sheriff to beat me every time we play."

As the others converse, Bauer moves back to the entrance, cracking the door and peering outside.

"My understanding is that McDaniels is gonna try to scare someone into making a run for it from this building, at which point a shooter will be ready to take said runner out. Now, if Diaz is new to the badge and Guzman is just a drunk, looks like you're the man o' the hour. Of course, if it doesn't play out like that, they might try somethin' else. Or if they saw Bauer, me, and Coop walk in, they might think better of the plan." He shrugged.

"Could be that it's all talk, but I had to bring it to you. Better safe than sorry. We should probably let Diaz know that we might be expectin' trouble. If there's a fight on, best to have every man - and woman - prepared."

OOC: Albert, please give me a Notice roll.

Brady frowns. "I know the Regulators bear me a bit of ill will. I've heard they fault me for not having found Mr. Tunstall's killers. If there's anyone else, I'm not aware of them."

"But I've no reason to doubt your word. I'll take Diaz and Bauer aside. Speak to them about your suspicions."

His gaze goes to the office entrance. "How do you think it best to proceed? I must be honest, Ranger. I don't wish to flee the office unless I have no other choice. My presence here is meant to calm the people of the town. Were I to run, I fear it would be akin to abandoning my post in my Army days."

With folks like the Regulators on hand and their penchant for vigilantism and extrajudicial action, you never know how things could play out. I'm also told there are other parties other than the Regulators looking to capitalize on any controversy here, so I'd advise against running out of the building until things settle down," he said.

"Too many entrances to secure properly. I'll go upstairs with Coop to secure the armory and make sure there's nobody snoopin' around up there. If y'all hold the fort down right here, we'll hopefully be back shortly. Don't come up unless we call for help, because it could be a distraction to ply folks from here," he said, moving to lead the way toward the interior stairs that would lead them to the second floor.

"Coop," he said quietly, his tone dead serious as they walked off together. "Don't forget 'bout them wolves. It could be them, back to finish the job they started. Or maybe more like that plant-man." After a moment, it would be clear to Cooper that this wasn't an attempt at a deadpan joke, but that Lee was sincere.

”Most of what are upstairs are court records,” Diaz answers in response to Cooper’s question, ”Trial reports and such. Property records are in the land and cattle office, on the other side of this floor.”

Cooper and Lee move up the stairs to the second floor, the dark interior of the courthouse almost preternaturally still. As the men reach the landing, both can see that the door to the armory remains closed and secure, an iron lock hanging from a hasp above the doorknob.

But the door to the hallway that presumably leads to the courtroom is standing open. Neither man observes any light from beyond the doorway. The gloom is deep.

Lee looked at Cooper, pointed at the man in the hallway, and then tapped his own chest, looking down that way again. He centered his ch'i, bringing a sense of calmness to him as he prepared to bring down the interloper.

He knew once he moved, he would inevitably make some sound; it was hard to move both quickly and silently. So before he moved, he took time to find his balance, quietly adjusting his legs and measuring their strength before bursting forward towards the interloper. His fist struck twice in short succession, as he hoped to quickly knock the man out if possible.

He moves in to execute his trademark doublepunch, throwing caution to the wind as he attacks, which reduces his Parry by -2 until his next action. The hope is that he can knock him out quickly, not going for the kill here.

Bryan did exactly what Cooper had been thinking. Any assault Cooper made from this distance would be both loud and lethal. A nice punch to the side of the head ought to take the ruffian down.

Albert held his ground to see what the result of Bryan's work would be, though he quietly slid his gun out as Bryan was beating the interloper, just in case.

OOC: Good catch, Albert.

As the Ranger lunges through the darkness, the figure glances up in time to register that the lawman is upon him, but not quickly enough to take any kind of action.

Over the course of his life and career, Bryan Lee has been forced to subdue many individuals with his fists. He knows what it is to strike flesh, to send a man to unconsciousness or death with his bare hands.

When his first well aimed blow hits the intruder, it finds nothing but brittle bone.

The figure’s ribcage, covered by the tattered remains of a denim shirt, caves under the force of Lee’s attack, the bones splintering with a series of dry cracks. His second strike shatters the side of the intruder’s bare skull, sending the rotted Stetson it wore tumbling down the hallway. The animate corpse collapses in a disjointed heap, one fleshless hand still grasping its carbine.

The upper floor becomes quiet again. Neither Lee or Cooper hear any further sounds of movement.

Leading the way, the ranger begins to systematically investigate the remaining rooms on the floor, beginning with the jury room, its long table and collection of straight backed chairs eerie in the deep darkness of evening. Neither it, nor the well appointed judge’s chambers appear to have been disturbed. Likewise, the attorney’s rooms are empty and seemingly in order. The records room is locked tight with an iron padlock.

During their explorations, Cooper and Lee encounter no one else on the upper floor.

Lee didn't speculate on the subject aloud, but he wondered if it was a distraction. It would have been a strange one, but it had easily split their numbers in two.

"Señor Chavez y Chavez," he said, guessing by the name that Cooper had given him, and based on what he'd heard from Jacinta and Desiree Thornton. He raised his hands to show that he was unarmed, sure that the man was holding some kind of heat under that poncho of his.

"It sounds like there's a heated conversation going on in there, and those can turn bad even in the best of times - and these ain't those. Why don't we go in there and keep anyone from making any stupid mistakes? I know you and your friend Bowdre and Bonney are out for scalps, but if you take the wrong one, you'll just end up pinnin' the tin star on Jim McDaniels."

He considers Lee’s request, then gestures for the door. ”I’ve a feelin’ you may be wastin’ your breath. But, by all means. Step inside.”

IIIA - Dead Weight

Cooper and Lee reenter the Sheriff’s Office. The air is heavy with tension.

William Brady stands a few feet away from a fair haired young man clad in dusty range attire. A pair of Colt Lightning revolvers are holstered in the gunbelt the man wears, both tied low on his thighs. He is glaring at the Sheriff, his features twisted with frustration.

Bauer stands behind Brady, just to the left of him, her shoulders tight, ready to act at the first sign of provocation. Diaz has stood to his feet, but is still positioned at the table where the chessboard sits.

A slender man in a dark colored duster, who both Lee and Cooper recognize as Josiah Scurlock, is leaning against the wall, just beside the short hallway that leads to the office’s entrance. He is facing Diaz, his arms folded, his expression calm.

”Billy, I don’t know how to convince you,” Brady says, addressing the man with the twin pistols, ”I am not on Lawrence Murphy’s payroll. I answer to him in the same way I answer to every citizen of this county. But you and I both know that he holds an enormous amount of influence here. And he has gone to considerable lengths to make certain that the truth of John’s death is hard to learn, at least for honest people.”

IIIA - Dead Weight

"Hello again, Mr. Scurlock. Mr. Bonney, I don't believe we've had the pleasure. I'm Bryan Lee of the Texas Rangers, and I was hoping we'd have the chance to speak sooner or later. Most people have advised me that I would be wasting my time, and that you and your friends were more concerned with collecting scalps than justice, but I figure talkin's always worth a shot," he said. He talked with his hands, so it was clear he wasn't going for a weapon.

"The Governor sent me to Lincoln to look into Mr. Tunstall's murder and general trouble in this range here. As a Ranger, I'm somewhat immune to local pressures, unlike the local Sheriff, in that Murphy can't simply have me replaced with McDaniels. That's what's likely to happen if any harm should befall our good Sheriff here, which will besides making me sad, will interfere with my investigation in a couple of ways. First, with an unfriendly presence here in this office, I will be even more hindered in my investigation than I already have been by that outfit. Second, I'll be obliged to expand my investigation to encompass the activities of your lot, which is something that you don't want to happen."

"In the mean time, maybe we can all calm down and have a conversation, and you can give me some information that might help my investigation - that is, if you really care about justice for John Tunstall."

Scurlock does not move from his spot, watching the conversation with raised eyebrows.

The young man identified as Billy shifts his attention to Lee, his eyes hard and full of mistrust. ”A Ranger, huh? I’ll give you this, Mr. Lee. You sound like a reasonable man. The sort that thinks things through. Doesn’t jump to conclusions.”

“You gotta understand, sir, neither do I. My pals and me didn’t come here tonight just cause we were stirred up and angry.”
He points to Brady. ”We’ve got real questions for this man. Things he damn well needs to answer for. I ain’t gonna lie. From where all of us sit, it doesn’t seem he’s done a blessed thing to make what happened to John Tunstall right. And I’ll tell you what, we’re not the only ones to hold that opinion. If we were, Judge Wilson wouldn’t have seen fit to deputize us to hunt down those that had a hand in it.”

He cocks his head to one side, his eyes narrowing. ”Mr. Lee, you might’ve heard, but Mr. Murphy’s got quite a few friends over in Santa Fe. What reassurance have I got that you’re not actually here to look after his interests?”

OOC: You’re correct in how you have things visualized, Albert. Chavez y Chavez and Cooper are standing in the hallway that adjoins the Sheriff’s Office. Those in the office itself would have a difficult time overhearing them.

Chavez y Chavez listens to Cooper, nodding slowly in response to the man’s words. “I don’t guess I ever thought about Brady being undermined by his own people. I think most of us figured that everyone was just following’ the Sheriff’s orders.”

A moment later, both Lee and Cooper feel a momentary tremor vibrate the floor of the courthouse, almost as though something beneath the building is shifting underground.

Scurlock stiffens. Standing up straight, his gaze falls to the floor. In similar fashion, Bauer glances down, frowning at the floorboards.

IIIA - Dead Weight

He waited a moment before responding to Bonney's questions.

"Words are wind. Read that in a book one time. Actions speak louder. I'm sure you've heard a little bit about the Texas Rangers, Mr. Bonney. I wonder if you reckon it's a coincidence that the very night a Texas Ranger arrives in town, all the missin' children of the parents that criticized Murphy suddenly came to be free and back with their folks."

He lets that thought linger for a moment, hoping that Bonney and his boys would imagine that one of the legendary Texas Rangers had come into town and freed the kids all by himself. Of course, he could never have done it without help, but he didn't want to pin the deed on anyone else and make them or their kin a target for Murphy, and if it bolstered his reputation in the meanwhile, he hoped it would only serve to make any would be enemies wary of him.

"But if you want some assurances, maybe Mr. Scurlock could put in a good word for me. We had a polite exchange earlier in the day, when his friend was shot at and I helped him carry the body." He paused again, to see if Scurlock would put in a word. He figured that Bonney must know about the ruse as well, and his small part in not givin' it up. He had to speak around the subject, so that he didn't give it up to Brady then either.

"You could also speak to Renata Montaño and Desiree Thornton. I believe both women will speak well in my favor. Also, I have a bit of information to share - I believe that McDaniels has at least one shooter waiting to take aim at anyone running from this building, so let's spend a good little bit here."

"Mostly I'm here to look after the interests of the good men, women, and children that are caught up in the crossfire between the House and the Regulators."

That was when he felt the tremors from the floor.

"I don't mean to change the subject, but did anyone feel that?"

OOC:

Persuasion: 5 (7 if they respect the Rangers authority and jurisdiction in the Confederacy)

Mainly he's trying to Persuade Bonney that he's not a stooge for Murphy, and that he's done some things that wouldn't accord with that, and that people independently don't appraise him that way.

Bauer looks to Cooper with a wide eyed expression. ”That Apache legend? You really think...”

The deputy isn’t able to complete her sentence before the floor of the Sheriff’s Office explodes.

Amidst the shower of splinters and lumber, those gathered in the office can see that what has emerged from below defies reason.

It stands close to eight feet tall, portions of it nearly brushing the ceiling. It is a skeletal creature, its entire form made up of what appear to be human bones, some white as porcelain, others yellowed with the passage of decades. Many are broken, protruding from the monster’s form like jagged spines.

Six legs have been created by the gathering of bone, lending the dead creature an insect like quality to its form. Four other appendages, arms presumably, extend from the monster’s back, ending in clawed “hands” with varying numbers of sharp fingers. If the thing possesses a head, or eyes of any kind, they cannot be seen.

Seemingly conscious of those in the room with it, it lurches forward, the stomach knotting sounds of bones grinding against bones filling the small space. A mere few paces away from the beast, Deputy Diaz appears frozen with terror.

OOC: Albert and Bryan, I need you both to provide me with an Spirit roll (Fear Test). Should you happen to fail, make a roll using 1d20+1.

OOC: Well, everyone else in the Sheriff’s Office managed to pass their Fear Checks, with the exception of Deputy Diaz.

Cooper and Lee are both panicked. Diaz, being an extra, shares the same reaction. In essence, on their turn, all three will try to move away from the bone fiend at their full pace plus a running die. All three are also shaken.

Given that Cooper and Lee are both PCs, I’d allow for both to either burn a chip or make a Spirit roll to do away with the shaken condition. Once they’ve overcome being shaken, their panicked state will also end and they can act normally.

Diaz will remain panicked and, if it’s within his power, make for the high country.

Bauer, along with the Regulators, spit out a series of shocked curses. Diaz lets out a sob. Brady, suddenly sounding like the military man of old, shouts, ”We need to fall back! Get out of the courthouse! Go! Go! If we stay, we’ll be trapped in here and at its mercy!”

OOC: To make things a little more manageable for yours truly, I’ve put the Regulators and local law enforcers in groups for purposes of initiative.

The lone shot somehow creates a deafening blast, which blows a sizeable hole in the wall, and shatters part of the staircase beyond it. The opening is easily large enough for a person of average height to walk through unimpeded.

Bonney runs for the exit he has created. Scurlock follows, turning to fire at the monster with his sidearm as he moves.

IIIA - Dead Weight

Cooper’s shot blasts splinters of bone from the monster’s flank, but it appears largely unfazed. The creature shifts in the direction of the hole in the wall created by Billy the Kid, its attention seemingly drawn to the escaping Regulators.

OOC: With the movement of several combatants to different exits from the Sheriff’s Office, I’m going to merge this thread into the Night Belongs to the Dead thread. All further actions will be resolved there.

IIIA - Dead Weight

OOC:

Understood. Quick follow-up: Does that mean the big critter is withdrawing from melee with Ranger Lee?

IIIA - Dead Weight

OOC: Correct. It isn’t seeking to engage Lee or to do any additional harm to Brady. It appears to be focused on the Regulators.
