Re: OOC1:

Checking the reference price guide for services in Dungeon World, I see that a week of mundane work is worth roughly 10 coins, military service is worth 1 coin per day, and hiring an escort along a bandit-infested for one day is worth a whopping 20 coins. I'm uncertain if we could affort to pay the recruits well or not.

If you shed some light on that, GM, I'll get to rolling right away. :)

Re: OOC1:

Hirelings are a bit different than regular hired help. The payment they ask for isn't always money. The compensation they seek is one of the following: The Thrill of Victory, Money, Uncovered Knowledge, Fame and Glory, Debauchery, Good Accomplished. That cost usually needs to be met at least once between each of our End of Sessions, or else they will be unsatisfied and wander off to find other employment. Westly's cost was Fame and Glory. Your group already got some of that when you defeated the pelicans, and Westley is soaking some of that in by being associated with you, so he is paid up. I plan on being rather flexible with what counts as payment, as long as it seems justified. Bolen's cost was Money, which you fulfilled by buying him a boat. (It wasn't literal money, but it was worth money)

If you roll 10+, you will have quite an assortment of people to choose from, and there will be no penalty for declining to take them along. (I will tell you their cost in their description.) 7-9 will give you a small handful of choices similar to what you want. Hirelings will have basic supplies with them too, so you won't need to worry about their rations and stuff either unless it becomes thematically relevant.

If there is anything else you need cleared up, don't hesitate to ask.

Re: OOC1:

I just figured that if we got a lot of potential recruits asking for money, it would be good to know if "well paid" would be 2 coins per head or 20 before we decided to take all of them along. :)

I'll just assume we can afford it, then, and add the +1 for that option. If it turns out we can't, well, we'll figure it out.

EDIT:
13:33, Today: Eryn rolled 8 using 2d6+3.  Recruit w/generous pay, known task, useful rep.

My vote's for Opal and Lady Mirrorsheen.

Boss, can Mouse pickpocket someone rich or annoying and use the coin to buy shoes?

You can most certainly try. I'll need a Tricks or the Trade roll. Go ahead and include the details of your pickpocketing scene as well, including what you manage to steal. Your attempt will take place before you meet the hirelings, but consequences (if any) will come later.

Awesome. Would you like the consequences to involve Danger, or Cost? Feel free to post the stealing scene IC.

I have an idea for either choice, both of which I can apply later. You will succeed in stealing from your mark in the meantime.

Re: OOC1:

Miss Deathcap gives me the impression that she might be pretty strong, but perhaps not too keen on following orders to the letter. I would not be surprised if she is a murderous cultist either. Gotta keep an eye on her, or just not bother bringing her along. I vote no on her.

Silas is impressive, but may be more of a circus strongman than an actual warrior. After the incident with the performers in the square I can't say I trust his kind. Still, probably not any worse of a show-off than Westley. Tentative yes, but I don't mind either way since I voted no on Deathcap and that would leave us with a -1 on future Recruit moves anyway.

Opal and Lady Mirrorsheen surprised me to say the least, but if Thomas gets along with them they seem like the safest choices. We either get a badass magic dragon knight combo package in miniature, or I accidentally refer to the gargoyle as a pet and sour the mood forever. Who knows. :P

I agree that they are clearly the best choices as it stands right now. I vote yes on both.

Mouse, hope you don't get chased/arrested/beaten up/roped into doing some shady work from trying to save 2 coins. :D

Or maybe that was your plan all along. Dun-dun-dun!

Nope. There is no defying this danger. At least not yet anyway.

I'm pretty sure Lusiny's not a huge fan of the sacrificial god, so I'd prefer to avoid Deathcap.  I'm fine with the others, though I expect the fairy's going to be a pain in the ass... :)

Alright, it sounds like you guys plan to employ Mirrorsheen and Opal, and Silace a bit more reluctantly. Miss Deathcap is a definite no though.

Re: OOC1:

So, I am considering starting up a second Dungeon World game, probably sometime in January. (Don't worry. This game isn't going anywhere.) If any of you are interested, you will get first dibs on character spots. I am aiming to have six players to start with, so I will need to recruit a few even if all of you were to join.

The main reason I am posting this though is because I was wondering if any of you had any tips for me that could help improve my GMing. You have all played in this game for a while now, so I was hoping to get some feedback. What do you like/dislike about Dungeon World? What can I do to make the experience better. Don't feel obligated to reply if you would rather not. I won't be offended.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I have learned some terrible lessons while watching RPG shows on Twitch instead of TV. One of them is "Always do the bad idea" with the corollary "Especially if it's the most in character thing to do".

Boss: Sorry I can't give you feedback on this. You were in the first Dungeon World game I've played in that actually went more than a few posts so...yeah. But I'm having fun. So there's that. But if you end up needing a healer I can always bring in Mitra or Auntie.

Also, I'm working on that post. Shit's just been really busy at work because one of my projects went into its active phase. Fortunately today was my friday so my brain can ruminate on the post instead of being anxious about mucking up the network or as an excuse for me to not be cramming for a probable job interview Monday.

Re: OOC1:

So 52 gp then.  Does our new singer help with that or would I have needed to bring him with me?

I'm about to lose contact for a week.  My preference is to find a way to let the captain keep her  soul if possible.  I also plan to learn a few more forms - gull, warf rat, and a couple of sizes of fish which might let me scout / snoop a bit.

Talk to you again a week Sunday.

Re: OOC1:

You need to have Westley present if you want to benefit from his Minstrel 3-coin discount. I will leave it up to you if you decided to bring him along for that. It is feasible that he could take a short break to do that for you.

Those animals all seem like they would be reasonable for you to obtain the shapes of in a seaside city, especially with the ability to talk to animals. Go ahead and add the gull, rat, and two types of fish to your list of forms.

Have fun on your trip!

Re: OOC1:

So far I like that having a shield actually lets me use it as a full-on shield in the narrative rather than having it be a flat bonus to armor class and stuff. I don't feel like anything in my inventory is going to gather dust, kind of. I like that Dungeon World can go anywhere since both the DM and players shape the campaign as it goes, but on the other hand that also means the 'style' so to speak surprises me every now and then.

In terms of where the campaign is headed I'm not so big on any more saltwater after the cave we started in, so if it wasn't for the ship I would have asked to rent a horse and cart and go as far inland as the plot will allow. :P With the exception of the smith I don't feel any direct connection to any of the NPCs around at the moment (they aren't too open with us either), so having these new recruits on our side will be great I imagine.

I don't have anything to complain about regarding your DM style. Seems fair to me so far. If anything I'd just give more clues as to where the odder encounters come from, since all the undead in the cave were accounted for but the birds so far felt like they came out of nowhere. The jotun and the demon had a backstory of sorts, while I'm still not entirely sure what was up with the burning ox cart.

In any case: I like the game so far, and I'm enjoying myself whenever I find the time to sit down and write a post for it. I'm determined to stick around. :)

Re: OOC1:

Thank you for the feedback, Eryn! I think it will be extremely helpful, both for this game and for the next. I will attempt to improve my GMing, and always keep striving to get myself to that next level.

On another note, I will proceed with the main plot some more just as soon as Mouse gets a chance to post their pickpocket scene.

I will give Mouse tonight to get that post up, otherwise I will start moving things forward tomorrow. Probably by having the new hirelings do some talking. In the meantime, feel free to ask the hirelings questions, or state who was chosen to accompany you, or push a random NPC into the fountain on a whim, etc. Do what you want and I'll GM it. ;-)

I think we have hit the December slump. Which I sort of expected. Posting rates for most games tend to drop off significantly around this time of year.  We'll just go as slowly as needed for now though, and hopefully things will pick back up in January.
