 Hello!

Thanks for inviting me. I am looking forward to playing a variety of PBTA games. You can call me Eugene (he/him).  I am interested in playing just about any game, and have quite a few that I would consider running. Those include: apocalypse world, dungeon world, monsterhearts, or  masks.

I should note that I have only run a bit of apocalypse world and dungeon world, however,  so I do not consider myself a very experienced PbtA GM or MC. . I have been a GM for years in more traditional game systems like Dungeons & Dragons, however,  and have played plenty of PbtA games, though, so Iím optimistic Iím up for it.

In real life, I am a college professor in my 40s who has been playing role playing games since 1983. I have two kids as well. Iíve been playing a bunch online via Roll20 and, more recently, a lot of play by post here and elsewhere.

 Iím looking forward to playing!

EDIT: oh Iíd also run Urban Shadows. Almost forgot that one!

Hello Eugene!

I'm hoping we can all learn as we go, especially since the AW Engine strives on player input and non-god MCs :)

I'm a massage therapist early 30s but I've done some college teaching, Anatomy & Physiology.  What do you teach?  And glad to hear the RPGamer life continues after kids - I have a 9-month old.

Hi again!

OK, to be clear: each of us will MC/GM a game and play in the others. Right?  I'm guessing we will decide together, kind of reach a collective agreement, about who will run what?

And how many people were you planning on adding?  Also, to be clear, I'm fine if you take your time adding people, making sure they will be good contributors.

Thanks.

Hello, thanks for the invite!

I'm Scott, been gaming for a long time, took a long break, and then got inspired again with the release of Apocalypse World, been running and playing primarily pbta games ever since.

I run mostly Apocalypse World itself, and Monstehearts. Did a couple of MH games set in modern Japan, if that sounds fun for anyone, could spin that up. When I run MH it tends to be pretty character-focused and not quite as antagonistic as the game often gets. Almost a slice of life feel.

Have also run Monster of the Week, Masks, and Dungeon world, but wouldn't consider them strengths. Apocalypse world is still the best apocalypse world hack though.

I'm also in my 40's, a video game developer and have two kids, a 10 year old son and a 1-year old daughter.

In reply to Eugene (msg # 6):

Right - ideally everyone plays and everyone GMs.

Exactly - I intend to have a strong presence to keep things somewhat organized but I'm hoping we can all reach collective agreements on games and sessions and who's playing and who's GMing and generally how things go.  Maybe there can be main PCs and support PCs for when an NPC just won't cut it.  I'm mostly hoping to bring PBtA fans together and get us gaming!

There are now 10 of us, added without discretion.  Could be great, could be catastrophic.  Let's see how it goes!

I'm going to send a PM to everyone now to try and get everyone in here and talking.

Exciting!

Well, who wants to run what? I'll play in just about anything. I feel ready to run the following:

1. Dungeon World
2. Apocalypse World 2e
3. Urban Shadows

There are a dozen other PbtA games I've played and own that I could maybe run, but it would be my first time running them.

Any preferences?

There's no way we're going to actually start 10 games, so maybe start up a couple and see how it goes from there?

I can always play Apocalypse World but I'd try Urban Shadows (I played a VERY brief try of it some time ago)   Not a huge dungeon world fan though.

If I run, then MH is likely the thing, if not an AW game. Pretty much depends on what people want to play. I can be a player this time if there's not interest.

Hi everyone, I'm up for playing in anything and would feel comfortable running urban shadows,  Dungeon World, Uncharted Worlds,Pigsmoke, worlds in peril or masks.

Could give legacy 2nd edition a shot too but not sure how many people have access to that

Morning, all! You can call me Briar. I'm an avionics technician with the military, serving in Japan IRL. Time zones and work hours make play-by-post a blessing, and I was really excited to find this proposal.

I'm intrigued in trying out playing in most PbtA games, and have access to most of them. I have very little experience as a GM, but hope to learn, and the guidance laid down for MCs in these systems boosts my confidence a great deal.

Legacy's 2nd edition is probably the game I'm most interested in trying my hand at running. (Hi, Winter!) It's technically still in development, for those who don't know, but the playtest version that's out is entirely playable and very functional, and seems to be getting mostly small tweaks at this stage. (It also has a setting hack out titled Godsend that was just opened up for playtesting.)

I like Dungeon World, and love some of the settings and sets of options for it (Inverse World, and the Priest class as an alternative to Cleric), but Fellowship has largely stolen its niche in my library.

Pigsmoke has my attention, especially because I've attempted to plan out games in the setting of schools for super powered or supernatural students where the players would play the faculty before, but ended up scrapping those plans in part because of my own unfamiliarity with academic life. (My own experience with college is limited to a single semester in a community college and half a year in a military technical school.)

Worlds in Peril excites me with the way it handles superpowers and encourages dividing screen time between different identities, though its checklist-style progression system really bothers me, on the page.

Monster Hearts 2E, Bluebeard's Bride, The Watch all make me a little wary because I feel like they might wind up needing more in the way of trust in the group, often for the same reasons that put them right at the top of my list. Masks might go in that same category for me, I'm not certain how prone it is to exploring particularly sensitive experiences, but I gather that it borrows a bit from MH.

I've only just begun to dig into The Sprawl and The Veil, though so far the latter has more of my attention. Headspace sounds pretty neat in its own way.

Other than all that, you can definitely count me in to play Apocalypse World 2E or Urban Shadows.

(Sorry if the commentary got excessive!)

Hello!

I'm Forged, I do logistics work for a warehouse in Canada. I've been gaming for the last 15 years or so, and I like the idea of joining a play by post group willing to explore multiple games. I only have the bandwidth for about 2-3 posts a week ATM, So I cannot join every game right now, but will ramp up as the new year approaches.

Systems I have:
Legacy: versions 1 & 2
Monster hearts: Version 1 & 2
Masks
Bluebeards Wife - (Not running yet)

I would love to play Legacy(Briar I'm your man!), Apocalypse world V2, or The Sprawl at first, but I'm a sucker for a good pitch.

I understand that many of the PbtA games are fairly mature, but I'm hoping we can discuss the tone of games first so players are on the same page.

Here are the quick pitches for games I could run.

The Kralworth Invasion
You are a Halycon City Ward, one of the "Young Heroes" protecting the city against threats. But what do you do when an Alien invasion starts, and most of the heroes are now fighting offworld?

System - Masks
Themes - Who am I?
Angst Level - Low-Middle
Serious Level - Low Middle
Warning Issues - Bullying, PTSD, Light romance?
-This game is your Young Justice/Teen Titans gig. The idea is that your group is suddenly tossed into the deep end. There will be drama, but nothing too heavy.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fallhaven
This growing town is one of the United State's hidden gems. Remote, yet sufficiently developed. A place for the rich recluse, the country bumpkin, or the suburban family sick of the city. People here enjoy camping, biking, and sacrifices to the God in the Mountain.

System - Monsterhearts 2
Themes - Love, Sex, and Violence
Angst Level - Maximum
Serious level - High
Warning issues - Sex/Gender issues, Bullying, Body Horror/Gore
This would be for people who want to play a soap opera. Two parts New Riverdale, One part Mean girls, Simmer in a Twilight sauce and bake under the heat of a teenage libido. The whole point of this game will be to revel is playing drama filled angst fueled teen monsters. Looking for people who want to do something dark, but not take things too personally. Will require lots of OOC talk about boundaries.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Staggered Isles
Your mother told you stories about how her great-grandfather came here across the stars. That this land was chosen for your people. But soon after your ancestors walked this world, the age of Sin came and tore his works asunder. But this is still the land chosen for your people....

System -Legacy 2
Themes - Stuggle, Exploration
Angst Level - Minamum
Serious level - Medium High
Warning issues - Violence / Brutality, Barbarism
I really love the idea behind Legacy, and want to both run and play it.

Wow it looks like we have a good bunch of people!

Just to recap, it looks like we have multiple folks interested in running:

  • AW
  • DW
  • Urban Shadows
  • Masks
  • Legacy

Monsterhearts comes up a lot too but some people also express reservations for trust reasons. (some people feel that way about Masks too)

Here's a proposal.  And feel free to ignore it if it doesn't work for y'all.

Maybe each person who wants to run a game should choose one off the list above, and we shoot for only one of each. After we've played together for a little while, then Monsterhearts (and maybe Masks) and other more trust intensive games can start up.

What do you think?

Or we could do some kind of poll.  Or people could just start game channels and see who joins what. *shrug*

I'm down for the 1 GM for a subsystem at a time. If a specific game is popular, we can make more.

This is everything I saw that people mentioned they would run.
  • Apocalypse World
  • Dungeon World
  • Legacy
  • Masks
  • Monsterhearts
  • Pigsmoke
  • The Sprawl
  • Urban Shadows

I'll take Masks for now, If nobody contests this in a week I'll open a OOC and IC thread and begin.

I'll join the sprawl game, and whoever posts a legacy game.

How do we feel about a thread to discuss the trust/issues so that we can put some of the more mature options on the table?

I'm glad to hear, Forged- that proposal for Masks intrigues me. (And the sequel to the web-serial Worm just debuted, so it feels particularly appropriate.) I don't mean for my reservations to take anything off the table, by the way! I'm a cautious person by nature, but I do see that the people who are really interested in those games to begin with are going to be people who care about the issues they address. ^-^

From what people have said here I suspect I'm probably quite a bit younger and less experienced with the hobby (and writing in general) than most others here, so I hope you can bear with me. Still, if no one objects, I'd love to jump on running Legacy 2nd Edition.

I'll take the time today for a proper read-through of Masks and perhaps Sprawl while I'm at it. It's good to meet everyone. (:

Edit: A general thread to discuss boundaries and comfort zones might be a good idea, or it might be better handled in the set-up threads for particular games where there's some specific expectations about what they might address. I'm not sure.

Both Masks and the Sprawl sound interesting to me and I could definitely play in those.
Sounds like maybe save MH for some time in the future, but I'm pretty interested in running that as well as AW.

My style of MH, as mentioned, tends to be less outwardly confrontational than what seems to be average, but it does tend to develop some pretty deep story lines, over time.

But I think 2-3 games is the most I can commit to and not run into time issues, so if there's open slots on Masks and/or Sprawl I'll join up. If I had to choose, probably want to play Masks more as I simply aren't very familiar with the sprawl, but will read up on it.

I'm very excited for the interest this has already garnered.  I'll be starting in on the Sprawl and we're already looking at 3 players so far, aiming for 3-5.

Have fun everyone!

Have two ideas I might run depending on interest or if someone more experienced would like to do these systems.

Empty throne
Urban Shadows
Cynthia Voight better known in the shadows as the Archmage, or the Baroness has died.  Her web of influence has shaped the rules of the city for decades.  With her death all the previously cautious factions and sects see their chance to be the new de facto ruler of the city

Final Review
Pigsmoke
The once great institution of Pigsmoke has seen declining attendance increases in the numbers of disasters and scandals and now the school is being evaluated to see if it deserves to stay open any longer

I am a college professor in real life, so Pigsmoke looks so so good! I had seen it mentioned for a while online but (I'm embarrassed to say) thought it was a Western themed game! I had no idea it lampooned academia. So yes, Pigsmoke please!

I say that, however, while thinking that maybe, just maybe, Urban Shadows is my favorite PbtA game right now. So I would play the *hell* out of that too, if I'm given the chance. I played a metric ton of World of Darkness over the past two decades, and I love the way Urban Shadows takes those tropes and makes them its own (and does them better, in my opinion!).

I will fully admit, I know nothing of Pigsmoke or Sprawl (this is the first place I've heard of either). Can someone give me a rundown? I assume Sprawl is something cyberpunk-y?

Oh, I should probably introduce myself. I'm in my mid 40's, and I'm an author (two books out currently, oddly working on the sixth in the series before I hit the one that should rationally go next- long story.) I live near Chicago, and sadly I've spent a lot more time in the hospital this year than I would've liked.

I agree with the idea of putting up a thread for trust issues or other OOC issues we'd rather stay away from - I had a bad experience GMing many years ago wherein I triggered off a player and friend of mine with a kidnapping scene, not knowing that she had been a kidnapping victim as a child. I'd rather not have that sort-of thing happen again.

Scott- I like that you're pushing a less confrontational MH. I prefer my games to be a little less on the PvP side, although I certainly recognize that PBtA does lend / suggest itself to internal friction in most cases (I've no problem with friction. I tend to start disliking a game when it becomes all about 'beating' the other players.)

So, now that I've babbled here, I'll go check out the other threads and see what's going on!
