1300 - The Adventurer's Emporium

Welcome to The Adventurer's Emporium.  This is the place to present all the latest technological toys, robotic assistants, gadgets, gewgaws, etc., etc. and especially etc.

Everything from computers to colanders, robots to rations, starships to spinning wheels, anything that can be bought or sold by a Traveller getting ready for adventure is fair game here.

I'll kick-start things with one of my own creations:

A.G.N.E.S. is an acronym for Automated Guidance, Navigation, and Engineering Simulacrum.  The "Simulacrum" in this case was originally a combination of an Artifical Intelligence subsystem resident in a ship's computer, a long-haul microwave data link, and an android in the shape of a very attractive redheaded woman.

A.G.N.E.S was designed originally as a "girl Friday" for Scouts on extended exploration missions.  It was capable of entertaining crew by learning and playing games of all sorts, engaging in conversation on a wide variety of subjects, and by performing other functions best left for those who actually read the manuals.

It could also plot jump courses, maneuver courses, orbital insertion and departure vectors, and firing solutions for ship's weapons.  It could cook, sew, perform repairs on ship's systems, perform extended EVA without need for a suit, and was proficient with a wide range of tools and personal-scale weapons usable for defense.  It was also capable of administering advanced first aid, including vitals monitoring, CPR, and cardiac defibrillation to ailing human beings.

Long-haul meant a range of about 500km.  This meant A.G.N.E.S could also participate in planetside excursions so long as its mother ship remained in geosynchronous orbit.

Tech Level:  12 (C) or better. Price:  Cr 67,000

I never had to develop 'her' stats fully, but used  her as an android non-player character.  She started out as a character in a piece of my short fiction.

The Adventurer's Emporium

UniGen. TL8+
A self-assembly kit to construct a Universal Generator with a 1kw output.
(for the non-electrically-savvy, that’ll run a small kettle or hairdryer)

The electrical generator module is connected to a variety of interchangeable front-end energy transducers. Options include a small wind turbine, a solar panel, a low-octane internal combustion engine, and a steam turbine (to be suspended over a camp fire) One of each is included.

The idea is that no matter what energy source you can access, you should be able to generate enough energy to stay warm, run a signal beacon and charge the batteries for your personal accessories. It includes a small electrolysis kit and Hydrogen compressor, allowing very small-scale refuelling of fuel cells.
25L, 50kg, 250Cr.

I’ve done some maths in case you want to produce Hydrogen with your Unigen.
Some quick research suggests that commercial Hydrogen electrolysis today typically requires around 70kwh/kg, (excluding liquefaction). With LHyd at 14L/kg, and a 1kw supply, you should generate 1L of LHyd in 5 hours.

Tech level improvements will increase efficiency, but the small scale production will reduce efficiency. On balance I would allow you to liquefy the Hydrogen within that power usage at average Traveller Tech Levels.

BTW, at that rate it would take about 25 years to fill the tanks of a Free Trader, even if the generator survived that long running 24/7. And that’s without tank leakage. Not recommended. :)

The Adventurer's Emporium - Adventure Packs

I believe it was Siofra who first mentioned this idea in 0200.

Adventure Packs would be "quick start" collections of equipment, weapons, and other gear that make getting a character or team of characters into a game simpler and quicker.

In keeping with the usual traditions of bulk discount, these packs would sell at somewhat reduced prices as a package deal to make them a more attractive option for the buyer.

I'll start with a very basic pack:  The Overland Pack.

Pack, Cruiser, ripstop nylon, with frame and padded shoulder and waist straps.
Sleeping Bag, nylon, synthetic fill, (available in rectangular and "mummy" styles).
Camp Matress, Ensolite foam, with removable nylon cover.
Tent, Dome-style, ballistic nylon, with fly and zippered doors.
Pickaxe, short handheld with nylon belt holster.
Fire Kit:  a collection of items used for making and managing fire in a waterproof plastic box
Orienteering Kit:  Lensatic magnetic compass, pocket gyrocompass, map case with clear plastic window and grease pencil, and other items useful for finding ones way.
Field Notebook, pen and pencil.  (Small notebook for making sketches, notes, and maps.)
Mess Kit:  a compact kit including a small pan, pot, cup, and cutlery for use in preparing small-scale meals for one person.
Canteen, collapsible, 2 liter, for water.
Pack Rifle, collapsible, 6 mm rimfire, semi-automatic (think something like a Henry Pack Rifle or a Charter Arms AR-7), with one box of 100 rounds.
1 week Adventure Rations (similar to military style rations, but of better quality).

Cost to the Adventurer on the go?  Cr 45, but varying dependent on tech level, quality, and availability.

Pick this thing apart, and make it better, folks.  Suggest your own Adventure Packs.
