I was ignoring that activity. If Amira decided to look into it,  I will join her in doing so. Otherwise, I'm off.

Episode 1: Race to the Bottom
In reply to DM (msg # 68):

The professor doesn't matter, but our new friend does. The blue lightning has now illuminated my position, putting me in danger. Not to mention the wound on my shoulder.

I note the position of the secret door his exit reveals..

The illumination also reveals the cages to my right. I leap over to them to use as what cover I can. Luckily I can throw equally well with both arms. I throw two daggers at one of the guards. (I roll a 3 and a 6?.)

Seeing little effect from my throw I provide bardic inspiration to Gregol and hope for his luck to shine better than mine.

Episode 1: Race to the Bottom
Maugen:I rolled 4 Persuation checks for you to influence the crowd, to give some gradation of success.

08:48, Today: DM, on behalf of Maugen Rah, rolled 11,13,6,24 using d20+5,d20+5,d20+5,d20+5 ((6,8,1,19)).

A murmuring spreads through the crowd, as some start to look at their betting tickets and back up at the screens. A couple of shouts ring out, decrying the setup - "Yeah, he's right!" "I want my money back!" - while a few are more skeptical - "This is my sixth O.W.L. race and they've done me right!"

A few disgruntled bettors descend from the stands, angry looks on their faces, and they form a knot of a couple dozen people striding towards the betting booth. One man, swathed in expensive-looking silk scarves of several colors, is exhorting as they walk - "I've long thought this was a scam! Enough of this tomfoolery!" A few guards begin converging on the group, and meet them at the booth. A shouting match erupts, and the dwarf taking bets has a horrified look on his face, as the guards press in, trying to keep the mob away.

Several people in the crowd, though, have puzzled looks on their faces, scanning the area for the source of the mystical voice that suddenly entered their heads, unbidden...

Amira & Cake Billy Bill:As you return to the spectator area from the wooded path, a disheveled man wearing work overalls approaches. He looks you up and down, and a look of recognition crosses his face. "You must be Amira. Your friend - our friend, really - Maugen sent me to find you. He was worried about you." You hear sounds of angry shouting coming from the stands beyond, mingled with the cheering...

Sweet Tongue & Gregol: Gregol's swing goes wide, while Sweet Tongue's dagger finds its mark, sinking into the side of the guard nearest to Gregol.

The Professor makes his exit, the a door in the rock wall swinging aside, revealing daylight, and he disappears through it. The two guards covering his escape, their duty complete, charge at Gregol with short swords drawn. Suddenly emboldened, both their strokes land, though you barely feel it through your rage. (Take 2 and 3 damage, respectively.)

The guard closest to Gregol takes a defensive stance after being hit with Sweet Tongue's dagger, backing away to check his wound. (Taking the Dodge action.)

Your moves.

Something sounds amiss with the crowd, and I have a sinking feeling my friends could be the source of it. "Good sir, please lead the way and bring us to our friend". I am reluctant to take anyone at face value, and so will be alert for a trap, but  anxious to meet up with the rest of the group.

In reply to DM (msg # 78):

OOC: if I can get an attack of opportunity against the guy who is backing away I'll use my reaction to cut him. Feel free to roll for me.

Shifting focus to one of the guards that charged. The smell of blood driving a blind rage I try to drive the blade through him. (I rolled a 20 to hit doing 9 damage)

Episode 1: Race to the Bottom
In reply to DM (msg # 78):

In order to avoid the scanning eyes, Maugen retreats back behind the stands and feigns interest in the various straps and bags adorning Spud’s back. Waiting for his chance, he unlashes the sizable burlap sack loaded with various tuber vegetables and returns to the place he stashed the wire spinner. Scattering most of the contents in the weeds, he places the spinner into the burlap sack and covers it with vegetables and grass (trying to mask its presence in the bag). A half-eaten carrot hanging from his mouth, Maugen emerges from under the stands and casually reattaches the bag to Spud’s back, patting the beast’s side.

Turning to see McGrath leading Amira and Cake Billy Bill out of the forest, he leads Spud over to them and stops. Examining McGrath’s eyes for sign of the charm fading— “McGrath, you’ve found them! Wait here for a second…” (OOC: let me know how much time is left on the charm)

Moving aside and addressing his fellow Yam Hands—“McGrath here has been very useful. A real friend to the Yam cause. So glad to see you all safe!” Speaking in a hushed tone, “The kidnapped are being held somewhere out of sight, but he says there is a secretive door in the middle of the track somewhere—  we should investigate it. It might lead to this Gregol. They’re using something to control the owlbears— someone they refer to as “The Professor” seems to be in charge of that piece of the operation. I also met Drexler, the one Eddy warned us about. I wouldn’t want to face him alone. We need to stick together from here on out. To make matters worse, Sweet Tongue is nowhere to be seen— he entered this race, but I don’t see him anywhere on the screens. He may have fallen from his mount, but it seems that his owlbear is missing as well. We must move quickly— I created this distraction behind us to draw in their guards, but it won’t last for long.”

“Amira— what did you see down this pathway? What’s down there? What are they hiding back there? And Bill— did your scouting lead to anything?”

"We saw two guards walking a prisoner between them. He had a bag over his head. I can lead you back that way, if you should want. I hope Sugar Teeth is Ok! I thought he looked too big to ride the birdbears? I would have certainly done that, if I knew it was a thing!Maybe next time.... sigh",

In reply to Cake Billy Bill (msg # 82):

“A prisoner with a bag over his head? One of the kidnapped!? We should head in that direction without delay.”

Placing a hand on McGrath’s shoulder and striding forth down the pathway with Spud in tow, Maugen Rah senses the charm’s power weakening, but still holding fast. “McGrath, it looks like you might soon be out of a job!” Maugen gestures at the angry crowd. “Did you know that OWL was ripping everyone off? What am I saying, of course you didn’t. Upstanding Karthunese (?) like yourself… Well, I could put in a good word with Lord Rhizomius— He’s a generous fellow. The problem is that he’s gone missing! My friends say he may be in this direction— would you accompany us?”

Through his Awakened Mind he speaks to Amira and Cake Billy Bill. “McGrath here may come to his senses at any moment, but he’s fairly harmless. Be on the ready for incoming guards, but let me do the talking. We don’t need any unnecessary bloodshed or the attention it brings…”

The party briskly makes its way down the pathway, melting away into the woods. Behind them, the uproar of irate shouting and exuberant cheers seems to intensify as the racers enter the home stretch!

OOC: Do we see the prisoner from before or any sign of the guards that were escorting him as we make our way down the pathway?

I lead the way back down the trail, to where I saw the prisoner attempt to escape from his guards. If we get back there without event, I will search the area for any signs of struggle, escape, and which direction it went.

Episode 1: Race to the Bottom
Gregol: The guard stumbles as he backs away, and you take that opportunity to slash across his throat. He gurgles and drops to the ground, clutching at his neck as he bleeds. You then step into one of the charging guards, his breath hot on your face, and drive the sword into his gut. He's still standing, but barely.

Maugen, CBB, Amira: McGrath, somewhat dazed by the rapid pace of events, just nods and follows you. (OOC: about ten minutes left on that charm.)

You leave the scene of unrest at the stands and return to the spot on the path where Billy and Amira saw the prisoner. The sun is low behind the trees, but you can see signs of a struggle, and a few spatters of blood. The trail leads back up towards the overlook, past the "OWL only" sign.

In reply to DM (msg # 85):

I leave my daggers where they are for the moment and thank them for their job. I move into Gregol's vision so he can see me (hopefully) as an ally. The guard nearest me has his face turned toward the crazed half-orc. No time for finesse. I simply thrust my rapier.

Episode 1: Race to the Bottom
In reply to DM (msg # 85):

23:40, Today: Maugen Rah rolled 13 using 1d20+1.  Survival check for tracking prisoner/guard encounter in the forest.

Crouching down to examine the bloody grass, Maugen snorts. “You said this is the place? My guess is the prisoner was beaten and taken to the outlook.” He stands and hooks his thumbs behind his belt. “Bill— if you have any skill at tracking, now would be the time.” He pauses to gauge the passing of the day into evening and notices the growing shadows amongst the trees. “McGrath— how much longer until we reach this outlook? We haven’t much light…” Maugen takes note of the two torches sticking from his pack, which has been lashed to Spud’s side. Navigating at night will not be a task to relish.

OOC: I rolled a Survival Check for tracking and see if I can tell what became of the prisoner/guard encounter. I doubt it was successful. If CBB (or Amira?) finds some tracks leading off into the forest, we might want to investigate, but if his tracking yields nothing (I’m assuming he can track stuff, maybe he can’t) I want to press on down the pathway until we hit either some persons or what looks like an entrance? Building? something. Does everyone think this is a good idea?

OOC: Also, if McGrath’s charm fades, let me know cause I’d like to interact with him again…

I don't have any special tracking abilities, and due to my low wisdom, perception scores will be at -1. I don't let this hold me back though, and I will make a great show of looking around and checking the ground for any indications or clues to follow.

Amira to CBB:
"Do you see anything? I've never been much good at this kind of thing.... Mama used to say that I wouldn't notice an owlbear if it were sitting atop my chest. Maybe we should have helped this man before... but I surely didn't want to put you in harms way if things went badly, I'm good but that seemed a lot of guards and it seemed even more like a lot of trouble."

I will help CBB in trying to look around for anything indicating where they went.

OOC: Sorry I was a bit late on posting this one.. Also, I am going out of the country for 2-3 weeks at the beginning of June, and you all can just assume that Amira will act to protect her friends and heal them as needed during that time if I don't end up being able to post.

"Whoever was bloodied here was taken down the pathway. We must make haste..." Maugen pulls on Spud's lead and takes the point position, steering the party up the trail. As night's curtain draws open, pin points of light appear in the dusky sky. An anxious, but exhilarating feeling tightens Maugen's gut. The black beast watches from afar. I am but his pawn...  I await your guiding hand, dark one!

OOC: I think we should establish a marching order. I'll take the front, next McGrath, then CBB, and then Amira? Any thoughts?

Episode 1: Race to the Bottom
Marching order:

Maugen w/Spud
McGrath
Billy
Amira

The path climbs as you go on, and after a few minutes you come to a slight bend in the trail that opens into a rocky clearing. From your position, you see open sky to the left side of the clearing (the "overlook" apparently), while the rest is ringed with trees.

You hear agitated discussion as you approach. Looking into the clearing, you see one pair of guards - leading the prisoner with the sack on his head - arguing with another pair of guards, standing near a saddled hippogriff that is tied to a nearby tree. You're about 90 feet away.

Maugen: McGrath slaps your arm, then whispers, "I think that's Jimmy, my wire man! What the hell is he doing out here?"

The charm person spell is about to wear off.

Sweet Tongue & Gregol: Assume that you dispatch the remaining guard, or capture him, whatever you deem appropriate. The Professor has fled the scene through the secret door. There are two other townspeople in the cages. ST's owlbear is about to wake up.

Episode 1: Race to the Bottom
In reply to DM (msg # 93):

Squatting on the path and keeping his voice to a whisper, Maugen Rah addresses McGrath: “Your wire man has a bag over his head? He’s their prisoner.” Maugen turns to McGrath as the charm spell fades, “I would begin to question my loyalty to OWL if I were you. When they have need, they’ll kidnap you or do with you as they please, just like Jimmy.”

His face now shrouded in growing shadow, Maugen glances at the rest of the group. With his Awakened Mind he reaches out to Bill.
“Bill— stay hidden and see if you can sneak round in behind them. If it comes to violence, you know what to do.” Then to Amira “Follow my lead, but have your morningstar ready.”

Turning back to McGrath, “Before we find out what’s going on, let's get rid of a few of these guards. C’mon.”

Striding forth up the path, Maguen jogs forward, forcing Spud into a trot, the rest of the group filling in behind. “By the Worldfire! Thank the gods! Finally we find someone!” he shouts to the guards in a harried voice. Stopping 40 feet from the group, Maugen continues, making a show of looking out of breath. “There’s an all out riot raging back there! Swords drawn and the betting booth stormed! We fled for our lives down this pathway looking for aid— you there, guards! You’re needed right away! The viewing stands are dripping red!” The sound of distant screams can be heard through the trees (by way of Minor Illusion).

20:06, Today: Maugen Rah rolled 20 using 1d20+5.  Deception check on guards.

OOC: Also, what else do we see when we reach this point? Are there any entrances to anything? Cave openings? If we turn back from the way we came, can we see the race track?

In reply to DM (msg # 93):

Forcing the blade out the side of the guard and spilling his innards across the floor Gregol turns to face the last guard. As he prepares to strike the tip of a blade appears from his throat and he goes limp with a gurgling sound.
Seeing ST for the first time as he withdraws the rapier from the guards neck.
Still unsure of this new person's true motives "who is this man, a friend?, an ambitious guard looking for his chance to advance? Best to remember Eddys teachings and be cautious."
Gruffly he forces the words as the rage begins to fade "Many thanks friend. We must free the others." Gregol begins searching for the keys among the dead guards. In a noticeably different tone of voice post rage that still conveys a sense of urgency "As we work to free the others I wonder if you might be so kind as to tell me where we are and who you might be?"

In reply to Gregol (msg # 95):

"Praise be to Deknar, you must be Gregol or I have wasted my energy! Eddy the Yam asked us to find you." ST retrieves his daggers and rapier from their victims. "People call me SweetTongue. We're in the center of the owlbear track. I left a charming one sleeping in the adjoining chamber and he should be waking soon. I have no more charms left to use on him, but I want to be sure he's not injured and if he'll still accept me as rider. That way is one exit I know."

"Where did the Professor go? I can't make out his exit path and worry he might be on the other side of any door. I don't know if we can rely on my companions to find us. What do the townsmen know?"

SW pulls out his pipes and begins to play a lullaby as he moves toward where he left the owlbear.
