Ep 1: Race to the Bottom (Sweet Tongue & Gregol)
Forcing the blade out the side of the guard and spilling his innards across the floor Gregol turns to face the last guard. As he prepares to strike the tip of a blade appears from his throat and he goes limp with a gurgling sound.
Seeing ST for the first time as he withdraws the rapier from the guards neck.
Still unsure of this new person's true motives "who is this man, a friend?, an ambitious guard looking for his chance to advance? Best to remember Eddys teachings and be cautious."
Gruffly he forces the words as the rage begins to fade "Many thanks friend. We must free the others." Gregol begins searching for the keys among the dead guards. In a noticeably different tone of voice post rage that still conveys a sense of urgency "As we work to free the others I wonder if you might be so kind as to tell me where we are and who you might be?"

Ep 1: Race to the Bottom (Sweet Tongue & Gregol)
In reply to Gregol (msg # 1):

"Praise be to Deknar, you must be Gregol or I have wasted my energy! Eddy the Yam asked us to find you." ST retrieves his daggers and rapier from their victims. "People call me SweetTongue. We're in the center of the owlbear track. I left a charming one sleeping in the adjoining chamber and he should be waking soon. I have no more charms left to use on him, but I want to be sure he's not injured and if he'll still accept me as rider. That way is one exit I know."

"Where did the Professor go? I can't make out his exit path and worry he might be on the other side of any door. I don't know if we can rely on my companions to find us. What do the townsmen know?"

SW pulls out his pipes and begins to play a lullaby as he moves toward where he left the owlbear.

Ep 1: Race to the Bottom (Sweet Tongue & Gregol)
The area is a natural cavern about 40'x40', with dim illumination provided by magical stones scattered around the area. There is one main entrance, which leads upwards to the Second Tunnel part of the racecourse, and a secret door in the back.

The cavern contains 6 cages with iron bars along one wall, each about 6'x6'. Along the opposite wall is a polished steel table with restraining straps. The table is stained with blood. A tray of vicious-looking instruments sits next to it.

The four dead guards have daggers and short swords. One of them is carrying an iron ring of ten keys. Another has a small rectangular metal plate (about 3 inches by 5 inches), hung around his neck with a leather cord that passes through a hole in the plate. It's a dark, heavy metal, embossed with three unknown symbols or letters, and is about a quarter of an inch thick. Fowler has a small journal tucked into his tunic, bound in black leather. It looks like a journal of some kind.

There are two townspeople in the cages, a man and a woman, and they're both woozy, maybe drugged.

The owlbear is laying near the entrance, gurgling a little as it wakes up.

Ep 1: Race to the Bottom (Sweet Tongue & Gregol)
In reply to DM (msg # 3):

Making a shushing motion with his finger to his lips and gesturing toward the trap door Gregol speaks in hushed tones
"Eddy sent you? Thank the gods."
Still a bit scattered with his thoughts and on edge about the possibility of more guards Gregol moves with purpose but a little frantically. Yanking the metal plate and cord off Fowlers carcass I toss it to ST.
" What do you make of this?"
Grabing the keys and hurrying over to the cells I unlock them. Addressing the dazed towns people " You won't be turned to beasts this day."
Turning back to ST "Others? How many of you are there? You have an owl bear near by? It's likely a townsfolk the professor was using some form of twisted magic to change people into owlbears he meant to change me before I turned the tables."

Ep 1: Race to the Bottom (Sweet Tongue & Gregol)
In reply to Gregol (msg # 4):
Without dropping his pipes from his lips, ST catches the metal plate. Seeing the symbols upon it, ST stops piping. "These look familiar. I will take this." The symbols here were also on the scroll MR showed me shortly after we met. The center one certainly is alchemical.

"People into owlbears!? That beast I was riding could be a human?"

ST puts his pipes away and begins to search Fowler's body more closely and finds the journal.

"Did you watch him work the transformation? That table tells me blood work was done and maybe more than that."

ST opens the journal and reads the last page.

Ep 1: Race to the Bottom (Sweet Tongue & Gregol)
In reply to Sweet Tongue (msg # 5):

"I saw him performing his experiment on one of the villagers though my view was from the cell. It was a grizzly scene and one I'll not soon forget."

OOC: I want to see if I can find my gear. Feel free to roll an investigation check if needed.

"Let's look around quickly and see if we can learn anything that may be of use to aid us in this fight. Oh and if you happen to spot my axe and shield I'd be happy to be reunited with them."

OOC: Looking for anything that might help. Documents about the experiments or plans for the next abductions anything of that nature.

Ep 1: Race to the Bottom (Sweet Tongue & Gregol)
There's a wooden footlocker in the corner that contains your gear. There's also a pair of cylindrical glass vials, one with a viscous red liquid and another with a gently bubbling purple one. The footlocker also contains the meager possessions of some of the townsfolk, but nothing of value.

The steel table on the far wall is still slick with blood from the horrific transmutation from not long before. The tray next to the table holds the array of ugly instruments the Professor used in his operation - a series of weirdly-shaped blades, saws, forceps, and probes.

Sweet Tongue, you flip to the last page of the journal. The last entry is dated a week ago.

Starday, 28 Lordrin
Tomorrow we make for Bradley's Folly. We need to find at least four more candidates for The Professor; only getting two in Fourbells really put us behind, especially since three others didn't live but a couple days after The Process.

Fucking Drexler...he blamed me for the raid in Fourbells going pear-shaped, AND he took that cute little bitch I kept for myself. Said we were here for work, not whoring. He even turned her loose. I'll bet he doesn't even have a dick. He thinks he's a big shot because of his contacts with the Black Talons, but even a big shot can be killed in his sleep. I'll get the chance someday.

After this, maybe we'll head up the coast. I've always liked the sea.

Looking up, you realize that the two townspeople are just standing, staring at the two of you, and looking nervously at the owlbear in the entrance corridor that is yawning and stretching. "Where should we go?," one asks shakily.

Ep 1: Race to the Bottom (Sweet Tongue & Gregol)
In reply to DM (msg # 7):
Grinning broadly as he grips the axe handle and affixes his shield to his arm.
Now I am whole. If there are more of them they will be the wheat and I the sythe"
Pocketing the vials he turns.
Looking to sweet tongue "Is there a safe way out of here we need to get these people as far away from these lunatics as we can."

Ep 1: Race to the Bottom (Sweet Tongue & Gregol)
In reply to Gregol (msg # 8):

"I know of only two ways out, Gregol, my friend. The way The Professor left and the way I came in. I think we need to head towards the track and hope that owlbear or transformed villager isn't hostile."

"Let's help those two with us and maybe we can learn more from them later. I'd like to take those vials, but unless you have a way of securing them I'm afraid they might leak or break. I don't want any of that stuff on me."

Speaking as the journal goes into ST's pack, "It's likely that the beast I rode here is someone from Fourbells and transformed here. I'm going to sing a lullaby as I enter. Let me go first. Then follow and talk about anything you know about Fourbells. Let's try to reassure whatever is in there waking that we can be friends. Let's not bring up The Professor or any bad memories quite yet. And be ready for things not to work as smoothly as I hope."

Ep 1: Race to the Bottom (Sweet Tongue & Gregol)
In reply to Sweet Tongue (msg # 9):

Reaching a hand out and offering the vials  to ST. "I'll follow your lead."
Addressing the townsfolk. "What are your names? I am Gregol and this is Sweet Tongue. We are going to try to get you out of here. In a moment we are going to head into an area with one of the owlbears best if you stay back a bit incase it goes sideways. But first where do you hail from?"
