Chapter 1 - The Fell Company
"Figure's gone. Which is bothersome." Heebie didn't venture too much further into the cave. Just enough to try and locate an exit.  He drew his shortsword.

Chapter 1 - The Fell Company
Solomon follows, stopping at the edge of sunlight in the cave entrance, giving Heebie room to work. His eyes aren't well suited to dark caves, but he looks anyway. When the halfling is ready to move deeper in, Solomon will surely follow.

Chapter 1 - The Fell Company
Delia gave the three before her a good ten foot lead before following.  The halfling's torch would light their way and she would provide light for herself and the elf behind her.

Rest assured, the halfling's screams would let them know if there was anything to fear.

After advancing 20' into the cavern, Heebie can just make out a northerly exit from the cave, some 40' distant. He can't see any other routes out (apart from the way he came in).

Ralph and Solomon trail the halfling. Delia and Alwin remain at the mouth of the cave.

Chapter 1 - The Fell Company
Heebie described what he saw to the group.

Nervously he said, "Guess we go on then. No other choices to be made yet."

He checked to be sure that he was supported and advanced toward the north.

Alwin watched the group move ahead, hesitating for only a moment.  "Well, this is what we came for.  Shall we?" he said to Delia.

Alwin began to follow the group in the cave, attempting to take his rear guard position if Delia joined him.

Chapter 1 - The Fell Company
Delia doesn't let the elf rush her and maintains her distance from the other three as they proceed.  She just hoped the halfling would speed it up.  They only had so many torches.

Chapter 1 - The Fell Company
Heebie and his entourage traverse the cavern and proceed along the subsequent passageway in a northerly direction. 40' beyond the cavern, they arrive at a crossroads.

Peering west, the passage continues for 30' before ending abruptly at a dead-end. The end wall is extremely smooth, in marked contrast to the natural cave walls you've encountered so far.

To the north, the passageway ends at a wooden door, some 30' distant.

In an easterly direction, a waist-height wooden barricade "blocks" the passageway, 30' beyond the crossroads.

Delia and Alwin hang back, just this side of the entrance cavern.

Chapter 1 - The Fell Company
Whichever way Heebie goes, Solomon will move into the intersection, to give himself a line of sight down each branch of the tunnels. The smooth wall, the door, the barricade ... it all seems interesting to Solomon. Time enough to explore each, and it doesn't seem to matter which one to examine first.

[OOC: Is the place still damp and mushroomy, or was that limited to the entry?]

No, once out of the entrance cavern, things dried out. Not a mushroom in sight.

"I guess so. As good as any." Heebie's head spun in all directions weighing up options. He looked for tracks on the ground or any sign that someone or something else had passed this way recently.

He went north toward the door. He searched for traps and pitfalls as he did so. Arriving at the door he search again before listening at the door with a special trumpet from his tool box.

Chapter 1 - The Fell Company
Creeping forward cautiously, barely quicker than a glacial snail, Heebie makes it to the northerly door without incident. There are signs of traffic on the floor - nothing particularly notable, but it would appear that the corridor is used.

A flickering light creeps around the edges of the door; the space beyond is illuminated. Neatly burned into the wood of the door is the text “Ingar’s”.

Heebie checks the door for traps ... [DM rolls] ... and finds none.

Heebie listens carefully with his little ear trumpet … [DM rolls] … and hears what sounds like furniture scraping on the floor and someone sweeping.

Delia and Alwin linger back at the crossroads.

At this point, both Heebie’s & Delia’s torches burn out, leaving you in darkness save for the faint outline of the door to the north and the cave entrance to the south

Chapter 1 - The Fell Company
Delia slid out of her backpack and rummaged around for another torch.  Once found, she replaced her backpack and lit the new torch.

"I have two more after this one," she said quietly to the elf.  "This is taking too long."

She looked speculatively down either of the cross tunnels and moved towards the dead end to see if it held anything of interest.

Chapter 1 - The Fell Company
Heebie ushered Solomon and Ralph back toward the crossroads; he whispered to them letting them know what he was doing. Delia's torch provided enough light so he didn't raise another just yet.

"I can hear movement and sweeping, like a brush on the floor. Something's there for sure. I am thinking we knock and find out if it is Ingar like the door says. Maybe they know something."

Chapter 1 - The Fell Company
Alwin's face is blank.  There was no need to comment on the weaker races inability to manage in a simple darkened room.  To be forever chained to light, the sun and fire, and never able to experience the world of darkness without fear.  It was almost unimaginable.

"If there is a name on the door and sounds beyond, we should not assume the worst.  I agree with knocking and seeing who lives in such a place as this." Alwin said.

Whilst the others rest at the crossroads, Delia checks out the dead end. Upon closer inspection, it would seem the end wall is, in fact, a set of plain, smooth, stone double-doors. There is no obvious lock, handle or other opening mechanism.

"It's open" comes a weary-sounding response from beyond the door.

Heebie watched heart in mouth as Ralph knocked and then relaxed at the response beyond. "Oh! Well of course why wouldn't it be eh?"

Heebie shrugged and shook his head at Solomon and Alwin. "Best get Delia I guess. Time for us to be a guest."

Ralph waits a moment (but not more than would be polite) for Delia to return, then opens the door.

Re: Chapter 1 - The Fell Company
Finding no apparent entry of glyphs to discern, Delia returned to the others.  She supposed the door could be pushed open, but left that to another once the little one was done with his dithering.

Re: Chapter 1 - The Fell Company
While Ralph opens the door, Solomon offers his own armored body to Delia and Heebie to stand behind. Although he keeps his mace in hand, he lowers it, so as not to appear too threatening to whoever waits behind the door.

Frankly, he's perplexed. Who would live here?
