Prospective Game Ideas

I had an idea today while making a mistake drawing my map. Due to a fair bit of incompetence, somehow these interesting gray spots appeared...

Before I knew it my mind was saying:

"Huh, those marks remind me of ruined cities..."

So, there's one idea. Want some old ruined cities in our game? Go see what's there? Today's type of ruins, or ancient ruins in reference to today?

Something about ruins though, they're always interesting.

Lewis & Clark

When you sign up to be an Explorer, some things will be expected of you. You may not have ALL of these skills, but if you don't have at least a few, you will be nothing but a drain on the expeditions as a whole.

-Cooking
-Hunting
-Survival
-Cartography
-Sewing
-Fishing
-Navigating
-Animal Handling
-Crafting
-Smithing
-Woodworking
-Carpentry
-Sailing
-Airship Piloting
-Climbing
-Combat
-Language
-First Aid
-Surgery
-Leatherworking

Please understand that this is just a sample list of the skills our employees need. Consult your local Guild Master to learn more.

Apprenticeships can be arranged for likely candidates that can demonstrate forward thinking, mental flexibility, good work ethic and a calm head.

In reply to Tomas (msg # 4):

I've made one water-evolved race, called the kuruthai, with a small description in the "playable races" thread.

Read it over and let me know what you think, and you don't have to be kind. There will be plenty more races to make:

- completely aquatic
- those suited for desert climes
- mountainous
- tundra
- arctic
- swamp
- many more I haven't thought of, surely...

I also need help in political climes... while your GM loves weapons, he fucking hates politics and anyone involved in them. Your game will be very shallow and crappy in that respect if he does not receive some guidance there.

Keep your ideas coming, I appreciate it...

Political climes? Why not stray from the traditional "kingdom" of the fantasy realm and try at least one communist land? Or socialist?

Socialism is more of a liberal society that votes on either where the money of the economy is placed (health care, education, etc.), or they hold an election to nominate a group to represent them and still have significant input.

Communism has a central ruling group that makes those decisions for the people, meaning that a smaller group has control over the masses.

There are other points between the two but I think that's the big gist.

(That's my best understanding.)

Politics and Economy

In reply to Kerrick (msg # 6):

That sounds like a great idea... I'll do some research and see what I come up with.

For the sake of the storyline right now, I'm going to take a stab at setting up a large company, or conglomerate to be the organization behind the gem hunting expeditions.

Thank you for the input!

Pets?

I'm kicking around the idea of including a pet with your start-out kit. I can produce a list of animals available as low-level pets and what they can be used for if everyone is on-board.

Thoughts?

The list of playable races is interesting.  I particularly like the stirsi.  Are you planning to create your own templates, or do you intend to lean on sourcebooks?

One book (which I unfortunately don’t own yet) that looks like a good potential source of inspiration is Gurps: Banestorm.

One issue involved in using communism and socialism as political models is that these are modern systems, and this isn’t a modern setting (presumably).  Could communism evolve without factory labor?

Update: reading The Jist of It puts a new shine on the politics, since there is going to be electric power in this setting.  Is there going to be gunpowder too?  I’m getting a wild west vibe.

Pets?

In reply to Tomas (msg # 9):

Yes. I do want there to be a wild west flavor to it. Along with a dash of steampunk and possibly some horror elements later on.

In short...  it will be a hot mess for a while until we have it all figured out and decide if we are having fun with it or not.

And yes there will be gunpowder. I see there being a lot of revolver type pistols and lever action/bolt action type long guns.

As for using other books, I'm going to try to shy away from it for now, I'm pretty sure I mentioned in another thread that I want this game to be accessible to players new to GURPS without them having to buy a lot of books.

If everyone likes the game and we want the rules a little more nailed down, we can all agree to bring in a source book or two, I'm always up for buying more nerd stuff, but for now, we will keep it simple.

Weapons

Weapons of this world are largely a chaotic mix of archaic, technological and magical.

No one would bat an eye at a multiple-shot crossbow, ensorceled to fire ice spikes.

Use your imagination here and come up with some badass weapons...  Your GM is a HUGE fan of weapons!

In reply to Tomas (msg # 2):

My thinking is to keep this game running on GURPS Lite for as long as possible. I want this game very accessible for anyone wanting to learn GURPS, without them having to buy seven books just to get started.

I'll make templates or players can make their case for how they feel the playable races should be built.

A clarification on weapons:

- Yes, I feel that gunpowder and the first few generations of firearms being available in our game will give it a more steampunk feel, and frankly a gunslinging elf would be pretty sick.

Read Me First, moved thread

Newbie GM here looking to learn/hone my skills with GURPS 4th ed.

Here's the General outline:

I want to start things out very simple for the sake of my sanity and that of any prospective players.

Having said that, I would highly prefer that we begin play by using GURPS Lite 4th Edition. I will post the link where you can go and download this for free (along with the character sheet)

The other caveat of this game is A LOT of player input. I don't know how it will work, but while this game is being set up, I would love it if any interested players weigh in with ideas of what they would like to see in a game, and I'll see if I can weave it into something cohesive.

So right now, you're standing in a totally white, empty space. It will be your job to fill it in with the broad strokes, and I'll do my best to fill in the details.

This applies to player races too. Come up with something original and creative. Give me ideas of what your people look like, how they act, what kind of environment they live in, etc.

I offer no promises to how well this will work, but as a player, I dislike being pigeon-holed into a certain role or idea. This game will be about creative room for our imaginations to come up with something unique and fun for everyone to play in.

Also, I'm still learning everything this website has to offer...  so many features. But, I promise I learn quickly.

Thank you for your interest, there will be much more to come.

GM
Additional Comments

I would like to add that as things are written down in posts, by me, they become canon. I'm sure it will take a while for players to arrive, if they do at all, and I won't stop the world-building in the meantime.

The reason for this is: I don't want to put a ton of time into making maps, coming up with names of people and towns, just to have it all go to waste when someone comes along and says: "Nah, let's do this instead..."

Thank you for understanding, and never fear, there are WORLDS out there to explore.

Read Me First, moved thread

I've decided that for now, we are going to operate on the basis that a large technological renaissance is happening, right now.

New tech has emerged using specialized gems that have been found in specific locations that can store vast amounts of electrical power.

These have been mined and are being put to use in many different ways, with new uses being found almost daily.

A gem the size of your fist, for instance, would be large enough to power all the lights in a small town for a week without recharging. This of course means they are beyond priceless, and are presently the premier goal of fortune hunters and large companies.

The Explorer's Guild was created to map uncharted lands and report back with findings of where the next lode of these gems may be found. This has acted very much like the California Gold Rush, only on crack.

The frontier towns are full of Explorers, hardies and every other type of person looking to cash in on the next big find. Lawlessness ranks supreme in these areas and it is highly recommended that fledgling Explorers not tempt these climes without experience in more civilized regions first.

This is not the only danger however. Large, dangerous creatures, natives and the environment itself will seriously test the mettle of anyone pursuing the gems.

Be prepared, but also remember that one big find could bring fortune and glory to the ones strong enough to risk it.

Good luck!

Read Me First, moved thread

Dear Players:

Keep in mind I want this to be your world as much as mine. I'm putting in the Explorer's Guild as a good jumping off point for players to start, but it is by no means something that you MUST do.

Want to save up and buy an airship to transport Explorers around instead? By all means...  Want to start a shop up in a small town selling candles? Well, if that's your thing...

In short...  I want a living, breathing world. Do what you want, it's fun to adjust to what my players want on-the-fly.

Transportation, moved thread

Airships - airships are used extensively throughout the world as the stylish way of traveling due to their high maintenance costs, specialized crewmembers needed and relative scarcity.

Ship - the bread and butter of traveling between continents. Ships move vast amounts of cargo and people from place to place with new port towns being built constantly to serve the people moving out into the frontier.

Railroad - established areas are beginning to see new machines called gem engines that are a major boon to the transportation industry. Some clever individuals worked out how to lay down tracks to accommodate large engines towing huge amounts of goods from place to place inland.

Personal vehicles - the gem engine has been seeing greater and greater use as more people begin to see the benefit of fast, economic travel. These engines require little maintenance, do not have to be fed, and never sleep.

Animals - a wide variety of animals are used regularly by the folks on the very edge of the wild lands where no roadways for machines are built. From large, slow moving pack animals to fleet-footed mounts that continue to cover the miles long after a human would be foot-weary, the domesticated animal remains the Explorer's best friend.

Yes, the crystals run out and need to be recharged by syncing them up with a leyline. Only certain people have learned how to do this and it is a closely guarded secret. As one would imagine, those skills would command any price.

New Developments

First of all I'd like to say again: I'm pleased you guys have stuck around to continue playing my game after my disappearance. I really appreciate that.

Secondly, there have been a lot of new developments and finally two of our players are together in one spot...  took a while, but here we are. If anyone has been reading the other player's threads, you'll know that, in my opinion at least, there is some cool shit going down.

Apparently keeping track of just a small portion of land wasn't complicated enough for your idiot of a GM, so I've given an extreme amount of mobility to two of my players, and soon almost as good mobility to the last...

There are things going on in this world that are slightly more... out of this world, and I hope you guys don't mind. I'm going to kind of let the cat out of the bag to anyone that hasn't been reading Alfonzo's Solo and tell you this is going to develop more into a Sci Fi/Fantasy game... I guess. We'll see how it goes.

There are old secrets. There are old secrets that hint at civilizations more advanced than what we have on this planet currently. The possibilities interest me greatly. If I do this right, it may end up being something cool. If I fuck up, well... I doubt that will surprise anyone at this point.

Anyway, there it is. I hope you guys will enjoy what's in store for you.

So, I've just read Graham Hancock's new book ('Before America') and this kind of thing has been an interest to me for a long while. So it's actually quite fun as a concept.

I noticed some 'AI' stuff mentioned in Alfonzo's thread - and thought that might be something. Just wait til i  become a full wizard with advanced tech....

oh the power...

oh the beautiful power...
