How to Join
Looking for a but of help with your character, or your game? Maybe you've got an idea that just needs a bit of nudging and twisting to get right.

We're here to help.

Fill the following out to let us know what you're looking for.

Requested Username: Whatever you want to be called by here at the Character Lab

Why Are You Here?: Simple. We aren't looking for essays, just let us know why you're here and what you're looking for in your experience at the Character Lab.

Are You Willing and Ready to Share Your Time Here?: This sounds kinda silly... all we're looking for is that you're willing to communicate with your players or GMs that you've come here for any sort of help. We're openly transparent about everything, and simply are looking to get a bit of traffic sent our way.

Also, if you have a specific game that you are wanting help creating a character for, toss in a link for us to take a look at.

Thanks! :)

Who Are We?

We're a couple of gamers, writers, storytellers, and more. We get so enthralled in the excitement of character creation, world development, and all those other bits and pieces of game design that we decided to put together a little place where we can focus on just these aspects of the game.

We don't hold anything here as proprietary and share it willingly with everybody who wishes to see what's available. For us, the love of the game is in the creation. If we can put that to use to help others, we're delighted to.

This help can range from figuring out base nuggets of information you have about a character or setting you want to expand on, to putting in the final touches of your character's personality or history to make them seem like full-fledged people. Look for creative writing prompts, character creation challenges, and "What if...?" events to sharpen your skills!

We'll also have lists of NPCs, quests, and campaign/adventure ideas that are free for the taking.

Many folks here on RPOL are highly sensitive about their intellectual property and refuse to share it, or give rights to it, to anybody but themselves. We can dig that, and we feel the same way. If you use the resources we lay out for you, please give us a bit of credit when applying to games or using the material for your own. A simple "Thanks to the folks at The Character Lab!" somewhere on your Rules page, Game Info page, or Character Creation/RTJ page will suffice.

We're in this for the story, the fun of creation, and for helping folks out who need a couple of nudges in the right direction. Hell, hang out and chat in our OOC about anything you want. Feeling up to contributing? You can join as a full-fledged Creator Member! Just let us know your goals and experience, and we're happy to have you.

Have fun out there, and if you're stuck on a final detail or need a second pair of eyes to go over your campaign details, check out The Character Lab!

Some Common Questions
Since we have no questions yet, it's going to be difficult to have a list of common ones! But as they come up they will be added here for new users to peruse. The first questions I expect people to ask, though, are...

If this is a free resource and people can take what they like, why are the Creation threads hidden from public view?

This is to ensure that nobody is gleaning information without our consent. It's free stuff in here for members of the Character Lab to do what they will with. We'd like to prevent dishonest individuals from viewing everything from Public threads and taking it without attributing even a bit of credit to the members of the Character Lab.

Do I need to stay here indefinitely?

Nope! When you're finished with your time here at the Lab you are free to leave whenever you want to; just give us a shout to remove you as a player from the list so you don't keep getting messages when you're no longer interested! You can take whatever content with you you like and request deletion of particular threads you've written. Please note that anything in Group 2 is "Up For Grabs!" and posting content in Group 2 carries with it an understanding that the information/content will remain a part of the Character Lab to be viewed and used by other users.

In other words, your contributions to Group 1 threads are your property entirely and can be deleted/removed at your request. Your contributions to Group 2 threads is content that will not be removed upon request and becomes part of the "freebies" the Character Lab offers to anybody interested. You will be given whatever level of credit you desire for these contributions!
