I’m still waiting on players to finish up their characters.  I have NPCs generated, so we can get started as soon as everybody’s ready.  (If anyone requires assistance, let me know.)

Or I could randomly generate the characters for you.

From now on, unless they insist on doing it the old-fashioned way, I think I'm going to generate four randomized level 0 (unnamed) characters on behalf of each player who joins.  I can easily do this using the Crawler's Companion app, from Purple Sorcerer Games.

Click on Character Details, which is leftmost in the menu above, and immediately below the box that says ROLEPLAY ONLINE.  Then, to enter character names and alignments, click Edit Character Sheet.  (Or just tell me the info, and I’ll enter it for you.)

In Orc Maze, the party travels together.  However, Orc Maze is just an optional mini-game, not the main campaign thread.  In Orc Maze, there is no XP or treasure, and death doesn’t count.  In the real campaign, located on the Sailors on the Starless Sea main gameplay thread, your characters may go their own way, if they wish.

After reading about half of the Wikipedia article on Infrared, I’m ruling that you should be able to see down the well, as almost all infrared radiation from sunlight is in the near-infrared wavelength, whereas most earthbound sources produce mid-infrared.  Just don’t try it while standing next to a fire.

I’m definitely still accepting new players, in case anyone was wondering.  One of the reasons I’m running this campaign is so that anyone who feels like playing can join on any given day, and be up and running in a very short time.  There are too many people out there who want to play, but can’t.

Re: OOC Thread

Welcome Varrish!
I’m another player here, it’s been a great game so far.  You may have read the gameplay thread already, but in case you haven’t: we have finally gained entry into a tower in the ruined Keep and rescued some of our fellow villagers, I think if you already have your characters this is a prime spot for them to join in, one of the other players has a character who has been stung by an unknown (and as yet unseen) creature and is having some dermatology issues at the moment, waiting to see what happens next before continuing to search the ground level....

So far on this adventure we’ve encountered:
Vine zombies.
An unknown (probably beastmen) who dropped a portcullis on us.
A weird well that seemed to be some sort of sacrifice contraption.
A ruined chapel that contained a tar ooze (nasty), a frog demon idol, and now has two beastmen locked inside as prisoners.
A sinkhole that seems to have some supernatural activity eminating out of it.
The current tower featuring a cascade of increasingly unpleasant beastmen, prisoners from our village, and the aforementioned unseen stinger.

Looking forward to playing with you, I think you can start posting at any time, let me know if I can be of any help.

Quick question:  how do we handle healing?  Grum got dinged by one of the beast-men, will he heal over time or because we're zero level we have to wait until the end of the adventure?

One more:  do the lucky signs have any effect at zero level or are they only for after zero level?

Thank you, hope all is well with you!

Re: OOC Thread

Two more quick questions:

Are all of the characters of the players who are away now considered NPCs or are they considered off doing their own thing?

If there were to be a plan that could use some NPC asssitance, is it ok to ask them if they will participate and you can evaluate if they would agree to help or not? (It would not be anything that would be trying to use them as cannon fodder, but simply something that is aligned with the goal of the peasant mob — root out the evils facing the village, in this case specifically, help me investigate the beast men we locked in the chapel and potentially interrogate them, more than my guys might be necessary if something got to them or they have regained their resolve...)

Thank you

Re: OOC Thread

For now, all player characters remain under the original player’s control no matter how long they’re away.  In the future this may change, but for now I’m keeping this loose so that people are free to jump back in even if they’ve been gone for a while.

What are the characters doing while their players are away?  This is uncertain.  They may be lingering in the gatehouse, or returning to the village.  They won’t be very helpful until their players return.

However, keep in mind that “Yeppo” in an NPC “player” whose characters are controlled by me.  You may ask them for assistance, and they will most likely provide it.

Oofi, Kitty, Puppeteer,

So we just found ceremonial robes, earlier we found a censer and evil smelling incense in a burned out chapel where some people died in the past and then two party members died to an tar creature....  I'm wondering if there will be an opportunity to use them somewhere down here... we only have three incense cones but if anyone thinks of a possible use for these or sees a possibility, I'm all ears.

Also, the people who passed their luck save were the ones who picked a skull...I had the other guys on my team take one as well based off that...will I come to regret this... Possibly :-)

Unless someone has any thoughts on the pool, I'm ready to descend.

Re: OOC Thread

@Bigredtwenty

I need a rules clarification, please. It was may understanding that when rolling a luck check the idea was to roll under the characters luck score.

The game mechanic I was invoking to listen at the stairs is:

"Characters can make Luck checks to attempt feats that
succeed based on Luck alone. The judge will provide
the specifics of any attempt, but the attempt is usually
resolved by rolling equal to or less than the character’s
Luck score on 1d20." (Core rules pg 19)

In this case, if there were going to be a critical success or failure on the roll, I would think they would be on a 1 and 20 respectively. Since the target is reversed from the norm, I'd expect the results that generate crits would be reversed, too.

I'm not invested in the issue, or the roll, at all really. I just want to make sure I'm on the same page with you on the mechanics.

Thanks!

Re: OOC Thread

I think we are thinking along the same lines, I think there were only four robes, my guys took them and I just posted a message using them but I’m happy to hand two over to you if you want a part in the bluff I’m setting up....my thought was to have four people play off like late arrivals and have the rest duck down.... I’m not sure what else to try :-)

Although if our approach is noticed, and or there’s nowhere for the others to get out of sight on the boat, maybe plan B is for the others to hide their weapons on their person and pretend to be the prisoners of the four in the robes.... (“Stand aside, more sacrifices for Leviathan!”)

If Yeppo’s boys want a robe, I’ll give him one as well.

Re: OOC Thread

I think his Lordship is just a big enough jerk to take you up on that. He couldn't possibly pretend to be a prisoner. That would be ridiculous.

Re: OOC Thread

Gurren will have to provide the list of who has robes for you, Bigred.

Have I overlooked the way to poke a player on this site, or is there just no way to do that?

I’m not sure what you mean by ‘poke a player.’

Re: OOC Thread

Regarding the censer and the incense:  I’m of two minds, I suspect that the real prisoners are from our village and I would like to save as many as we can.... I’m hoping the incense smoke will harm or grant us an advantage somehow over the beast-men/chaos lord.... too soon to play that card?  Do you want to wait until we get closer to the top?

Yes, or at the minimum until they figure out we're not on their side.

Re: OOC Thread

Thank you, let’s see how this starts to play out then....

Btw, I don’t think RPOL has a way to alert another player to make a move other than Direct message.... but I think you also have to opt in to the site sending you an email notification that you have messages :-)

Re: OOC Thread

That's what I decided. It seemed like it would be a good feature to have until I remembered that part of the appeal of PbP is flexible play timing and that one of the things about it that appealed to me was that it is a good way to practice patience. :>

Re: OOC Thread

I apologize in advance, but I will probably be slow to post for the next week or so. I have midterms this week and next.

I'm guessing that Gurren will make the initiative roll again.
