The suns of Tatooine beat down upon the rocky ledges of Beggar's Canyon. Nestled in the sparse shade of a narrow overhang, three men crouch. The foremost of the trio, Biggs Darklighter, holds in his hands a slugthrower rifle, trained on the valley below in which half a dozen hairy, fanged wamp rats scurry about, occasionally growling and sniffing the air about them.

"Careful, Biggs," says the muscular Janek Sunber, a hint of mockery in his tone, "You only got one shot."

Biggs grins, though he does not take his eye from the wamp rat on which his rifle is trained. He fires, and the thunder of the shot echoes throughout the canyon about them. The rats scatter, bolting to nearby crevices. All save one, which collapses lifelessly to the rocky ground, smoke issuing from its side.

"I believe that puts me at three to two," he says with just a hint of smugness as he passes the rifle to the third young man, Luke Skywalker.

Janek gives him a mock scowl, but then slaps him good naturally on the shoulder.

"Nothing like a good comeback," he grins.

"We'd better keep moving along the canyon," Biggs chuckles, rising and clambering out into the sun, "Those rats won't be coming back anytime soon. We should find more as we get closer to the main nesting grounds."

Even as he speaks, the low rumble of a sublight drive reaches their ears, faint but growing steadily louder.

Biggs waves at the others to halt, quickly sliding back down into the cleft and drawing the battered blaster pistol at his side.

Janek, who, like Luke, is not wealthy enough to own a personal blaster, draws a long knife from the sheath at his side.

"Hutts?" he murmurs quietly to Biggs.
