Launch day: Jack O'Neil

February 7, 2009 it is a festive mood on Macross Island. To commemorate the launch of the SDF-1 an air show with three aerial demonstration teams along with static displays of mecha and aircraft.

Every nation state with a VF-1 Valkyrie squadron is show casing one of their veritech aircraft on static display all across Macross Island Airbase. While the reason for multiple displays of the same aircraft is partially a point of national pride it is also the first time civilians (other then military contractors) have been able to physically inspect and walk around the veritech fighters.

The air show begins with the US Navy's Blue Angels, flying legacy FA/-18 Hornets followed by the U.S. Air Force's Thunder Birds, flying F-16 Fighting Falcons who are then followed by the Russian Air Force's Russian Knights, flying SU-27 Flanker's. The last team to fly is United Nations Angel Birds, flying VF-1 Valkyrie's. In the middle of the Angel Birds demonstration some idiot in a civilian fan jet tries to fly into the middle of the demonstration. The civilian fan jet is intercepted and forced to land. The Angel Birds restart their aerial performance. After this performance all four flight teams conduct a joint aerial performance display. With 28 aircraft all flying at the same time in such close proximity it is a wonder none of them collided with one another.

Lieutenant (j.g) Jack O'Neil, U.S. Navy currently assigned to VF-84 Jolly Rodgers as part of the 10th UN Spacy Air Group parks his assigned VF-1D veritech, designated Skull 109 after completing his last demonstration flight for United States VIP's (Congressmen, Senators, prominent businessmen/women etc).

The ground crew takes care of Jack's last VIP, and leaves the 'VIP helmet' in the back seat. As he deplanes, the squadron commander of VF-84 Commander Roy Fokker approaches with a teenage civilian.....

You have the following gear:

You do not have:
  • 5.7mm Five-seveN sidearm (or ammo)

Shaking his hair with his right to remove some of the sweat that have gathered from his flights with the VIP Jack make sure that his flight suit and cap looks presentable enough as he watch his commander approach.

"Greetings Commander. I take it that the flight show is over?" Jack ask after making a salute and glance towards the civilian beside Roy but dosen't comment at the moment. With the heat and ocean all around them he looks forward to something to cool him down.

Roy returns the salute. The civilian next to Roy looks a little flustered, at this point Jack realizes the kid fits the description of the fan jet pilot.

"Well the flight demonstration teams are done." He then introduces Jack to the civilian. "Lieutenant O'Neil, this is Rick Hunter a family friend. I'm going to take him up for a demo flight."

"Welcome to Macross island, mister Hunter" Jack greet the boy and shakes his hand if offered and then turn his attention back to Roy. "Of course, sir. My bird is available at the moment and should have an extra helmet nearby. Can I help you with anything else, sir?"

The teen shakes Jack's hand. Commander Fokker, then answers his subordinates question. "Just be back here by eighteen hundred hours hours so you can taxi over to where the rest of the squadron is parked. Remember we're escorting the Macross up to Earth orbit at twenty hundred hours."

"Yes, sir. Have a good flight Commander" Jack salute and then leave his bird to the family.

Where to now then? he muse to himself as he heads towards a shop to buy some water or similar to cool himself down.

The days events continue.....Jack is dropped off at the food court and thanks the jeep's occupant for the ride. He then orders some food and gets some lunch.

When it happens only a few people on the airfield (military and civilian alike) see it at first. The bow of the SDF-1 Macross splits and begins to glow. The air is then filled with a massive amount of static for several seconds before a massive energy blast erupts from  he  bow of the SDF-1 Macross. The energy blast travels over a portion of Macross city and then vaporizes a portion of the hilly part of the island.

Where there was once hill and spectators watching the air show there is now nothing and a section of Macross city is now considered beach front property.

Air raid sirens begins to sound. Not having been precluded by a 'This is not a drill' message in several languages causes pandemonium to breaks out among the civilians. The last time such sirens were activated it is wasn't a drill was back in 2005 when the island had a much smaller population.

The military personnel on the other hand begin to head towards their assigned location/duty in the event of an attack.

Jack's assigned location during an attack is of course back where his Veritech is.....

OOC: Make a perception roll. Get a 12 or higher and you take notice of the SDF-1's bow splitting open. Fail and well you of course notice the static and subsequent energy blast.

A voice in Japanese is heard over the loudspeaker located around the base and Macross City itself.

[Private to group Japanese:
"This is not a drill, I say again this is not a drill. All civilians please proceed to your designated air raid shelter. All civilians proceed to your designated air raid shelters."

Once Jack arrived at the massive food court he immediately heads for some refreshment and keep himself in the shadows to keep some of the heat and sweat away, and answer questions to any who approach him with a trained smile.

As he then hears the bow of SDF-1 split Jack know something is amiss and even before the main gun has fired he is already moving towards on the jeeps nearby, either to find one empty or find a driver that can take him towards his Veritech pronto.

"Driver! I need to get to area XXX fast! Steep on it!" Jack shouts to a driver if that is the only option otherwise take one that is empty.

It takes Jack a few minutes to find a jeep going in his direction. He ends up jumping in a jeep with three pilots from the 302nd Tactical Fighter Squadron (JASDF), also assigned to the SDF-1. As luck would have it the squadron was parked next to VF-84 Jolly Rodgers.

The pilot driving the jeep tries to get to where they are going quickly, but the number of civilians running across the base makes this difficult.

Jack witnesses several VF-1's from VF-84 take off, as well as other veritechs from the SDF-1 which were parked off the ship.

Crap, crap, crap! goes through Jack's mind as he watch the Veritech take off all around the island and not for the first time he cursed that the food court was so far away, and even if it was not so far away the panicking civilians around them didn't help them reach the VF any faster.

I just hope that Roy didn't park it anywhere strange!

As the crowd of civilians thins out Jack witnesses surface to air missiles being launched from ADR-03 Cheyenne destroids, and fixed missile emplacements on the ground as well as on the SDF-1. This is shortly followed by explosions occurring in the air as inbound missiles are intercepted by the surface defense missiles.

Not all of the inbound missiles are intercepted and all across the base there are large explosions followed by secondary explosions as several aircraft are hit.

The jeep, driving across the tarmac, is exposed and out in the open but isn't close enough to be destroyed or flipped over by some of the nearby explosions. The pilot driving the jeep reaches his destination where four JASDF VF-1J's are parked.

Further down the flight line Jack can see his VF-1D. Its engines are on and he can see the canopy being lowered.

OOC: ok you can post watching your veritech take off without you.

You got to be shitting me! is Jack's first thought as he watch his bird take off without him in it with growing horror. There must be another empty plane nearby then! is his second as he now almost desperately look for another nearby VF that he could use.

OOC: I don't really have a way to contact anyone who tell me if there is a empty VF nearby right?

Taking no chances anymore before it's to late Jack run towards the VF-1j while keeping a eye out if another pilot comes running towards the VF, once close enough he almost jump into the aircraft and immediately goes through the checks to launch.

As Jack goes through the pre-flight checks he finds that there is a GU-11 mounted that is loaded with HEAP ammo.

A Japanese accented female voice answers Jack. "Skull One-oh-nine why are you in Vermilion Seven. Who is in your assigned veritech?" After a brief pause the controller gives Jack instructions. "Taxi to the edge of runway two but do not take off. We have veritech taking off from both ends of runway two."
