Having kept himself mostly to himself during the time so far on the spacecraft Daigo have not kept himself updated on about anything, so when he by pure chance stumble upon someone from the military that seems to asian (even better Japanese) he spend little time walking up to that person.

"Pardon me officer" he speaks in clear english, with some japanese accent. "Have there been any news about what is happening?"

A shake of the head to Daigo.

She laughs slightly.  "Not officer, Marine, and proud of it."

She is more serious, as she continues.

"Other than we jumped to the orbit of Pluto, no sir." Noticing his likely Japanese heritage she adds.  "I have been looking for some of my family, Hoshino, have you heard of anyone with that name?"  When she says the name, it is said very correctly, with a slight pause to get the accent right.

"My name is Meiko, are you by chance Japanese?"

"Right, sorry. It all looks so similar to me" Daigo reply somewhat embarrassed. "Pluto? Sounds like a start of sci-fi serie...Hoshino? No, I have kept myself busy most of the time helping with making the...rations somewhat better, former sushi chef"

Yeah, hail from Hokkaido or Hakodate to be more exactly. You also from Japan?

A brilliant smile for a moment, she continues is very fluent Japanese with a faint Sendai accent.

"Hisato Daigo...or Daigo Hisato would be more correct in the west" Daigo reply and bow quickly back. "Have...have you been in the military long officer? Not sure what a chef will be of use here and..." he finish awkwardly.

"Pleased to meet you, Hisato-san." A short laugh.  "Meiko.  Please use my name."

She appraises him a moment, then looks past to the camps around them.

"Eight years, including my time in the academy." She gestures past him to the people.  "I see a lot of people to feed, Hisato-san.  When people eat good food, they feel happy, safe, secure.  I think your profession might be very valuable indeed."

She seems to think a moment, nods again.

"Would it be OK with you if I bring your name up?  I am certain the rations we can provide will be far better for morale if your touch is upon them, if.. that is OK with you?"

"It...The problem is what good is a chef if we are attacked again? Maybee I should join and make a better difference there"

"That is an option too, Hisato-san.  One I was not going to suggest, but a viable one.  When we get back, you should do that."

"Are there...rather are you recruiting now? A long way to Earth after all" Daigo manage a weak smile.

“Yes, but we should be jumping back after we are done with casualties.  I mean it may take a few weeks but it only took seconds to get here after all.”

"Well, that is a relief. I guess I feel helpless and restless with everything"

”Well, I guess I can ask for you?  I mean we have an invasion on, so we all may be stuck on this ship for months. I am guessing why we are getting all that salvage has to do with that.  We might just be recruiting.”

"That would be wonderful...or not, considering that people die. Anyway, I would be grateful for that"

A very sober look from the small woman.

"We have been preparing for this war, but we may not be ready enough."

"From what little I know from history nobody is truly ready for war. And this...is clearly not something anyone expected, right?"

She bites her lip, but she nods.

"The spaceship was made for giants, so we knew that much, we prepared for that.  And if one ship comes, others may be looking for it.  That is about all I know."

"Well, next time we might be more prepared"

A shake of her head.

"We were prepared, it's why we are alive now."

Meanwhile in another portion of the Refugee Camp:

Romy has decided that rather be a victim, she might as well use her talents to help out, and at the same time, see if she can't make a bit in the way of capital, even if at this point that would consist only of good will, and cachet.

With that in mind she see's about using her charm and wit, to, with military cooperation, create a General Store Collective style operation to boost morale and bring about a sense of normalcy. People after all, do like to shop, and this place is going to need an economy of sorts at some point; might as well get in on the ground floor. To that end she will get with the city fathers, shop owners and the like and expand the operation into a mini mall / food court, where barter and trade and other services (Hairdresser for one!) can be had.

She also hopes to see if the military can shake loose surplus stock of run of the mill items, simple things like toilet paper, t-shirts, shoes, toothpaste, and other everyday items. All with the hopes that this, added to the barter and trade can be sold under the protection of armed UN Peacekeepers and their oh their so sexy Destroids. Oooo, why just feeling them walk around gives her shivers.

Romy tries to create soe sort of general store but it's a failed effort. Not a failure for a lack of trying, just a failure due to a lack of goods. There is no lack of toiletries, soap and toothpaste. There is no lack of food, and by the 17th the the Humanitarian Daily Ration's are replaced with cafeteria/mess hall type food three times a day.

But there is a serious lack other goods to barter. The only items available to barter are whatever was in a person's possession after getting to one of the shelters, and the various bits of the Humanitarian Daily Rations.

Vance gets back to the refugee camp after a long 18 hours day of work. The military types didn't say anything about not telling anyone what he was working on so he passes along to others that Macross City is being rebuilt inside the space ship.
