The Eternal Senate (WIP)
Part V
Tiberius could sense the tension in the air it was something he had been accustomed to for thousands of years yet it had been so long since he was this close to the struggle, the anxiety was refreshing to him in a way, the uncertainty gave him comfort. He would make what he wanted if the world regardless of his hard or how long he had to claw at it.
He sat in a low laying chair, candles and incense burned around him as Luka was busy grooming his masters body as he had grown accustomed to. The elixir rest on a table easily within arms reach, when his plans had come to fruition would be freer then he had been in an age. Luka finished his work and the Ancient drank down the beverage, its fowl taste barely afflicted the inhuman beast that was Tiberius, the thought that this was poison did pass his mind but there was no room for doubt.
Moments later a pair of the warrior women barged in to the room “The Goddess Desponia demands your presence.
Tiberius was in no mood for a confrontation and acquiesced to the command, he with Luka behind made their way through a familiar gauntlet of hallways to the chamber where Desponia kept her court.
They were seated not far where some of the eyeless beast Desponia kept, likely to drive home the point for them to stay in line during the nights proceedings. Others filled in to the chamber as well, Keto and a slew of witches, the Handmaidens of Desponia, followed by some Vampires that Tiberius could smell the oaths of the Invictus upon them.
He saw the way they scoffed at the barbarism of the Acolytes yet at times brutality was the cleanest answer. The way they looked down at the edifices of Desponia was foolish and why they were followers, he knew Desponia had an ego but she was one of very few Kindred with such a personality with the power to truly back up her claims. He understood their arrogance as much as he understood the hatred the Acolytes held for the ones which would would oppress them. Both sides were right both were wrong and he was amused at their inability to see past themselves.
“Luka, say nothing to anyone here, the Invictus will try to turn you in to a tool and you k ow you are but to serve me alone.” Tiberius placed his hand on Lukas shoulder.
“Of course, I would not be interested in serving that bunch anyway they seem a little to high and mighty to me, non can match you in that area.” Luka scoffed at the idea of being taken advantage of by the Invictus, there was now one vampire whom he was committed entirely to and these pretenders were a pale comparison.
Time went on and surely enough the Emperor and his entourage arrived as expected and though it had been only months since he last saw his progeny these new eyes gave him a heightened sense of satisfaction in what he has become. Haloise did not so much as give a glance to him and was completely unsuspecting as he walked right by his sire.
Tiberius was a firestorm of emotions, some part of his felt pride in seeing the progeny forged by his hand having risen to the pinnacle of Kindred society. Yet another part of him wanted to lash out at the rebellious Kindred who shunned his sire. While these two feelings were common for Tiberius a new sensation overtook him, the bleak absence he would feel if he did somehow vanquish the single vampire to ever best him. Tiberius explained it away as an effect of the elixir yet he knew that made little sense if anything the potion would increase his sense of ambivalence.
His contemplation was broken only when Desponia and her select handmaidens emerged and greeted the Emperor. Tiberius could not hear the false pleasantries exchanged by the two, it was all for show after all as he knew they despised one another but Desponia could not appear as a cruel host and Haloise had to appear the diplomat. The falsehood of everything around him set in now, the real conversation will happen in a back room with intent glares exchanged between rival parties. He found the whole display to be wholly boring with the two leaders giving praise to one another but it was all very tongue and cheek. Tiberius rolled his eyes in disgust, there was a time when this all made sense to him the pageantry of it all yet his new Requiem would not be about hollow demonstrations, he would live by do or do not.
A scheme started to develop in the Ancients mind, surly whoever knows the real progress of these negotiations will have an upper hand in politics across Europe and he was in need of any advantage he could find. Without a doubt the eyes of the place were turned to this room, he could sneak away and make his way to the more private areas where the real conversation will be held.
“Luka I am going hunting, should things get out of hand you know what to do.” Tiberius addressed his Ghoul before stepping out from the area. Luka was confused for surly Tiberius was of no need of Vitae the dedicated Blood Doll always saw to that but he held faith in his masters machinations.
Tiberius stepped out of the main meeting chamber and began to wander the vacant corridors of the temple haven. He had grown somewhat accustomed to this environment and knew well which doors he was restricted from entering. He found one such embossed door before to long and sure enough there was a guard posted there, that could mean but one thing to the Ancient, beyond that door was where he needed to be.
As he approached the women rose an arm pulling at vines on the wall until they became some kind of bizarre weapon, a combination of a whip and spear.
“Stay where you are, these chambers are for who the Goddess deems worthy.” She spoke stoutly, his intent was as plain as day.
Tiberius did remain still, he could hear cheers and applause coming from the main chamber the ceremony was soon to be over. The option to use force existed for him yet that could take more time then he would like and certainly would cause unneeded friction with his host and would be ally. He resolved to more duplicitous means.
Tiberius called upon his blood and like lightning closed the distance between him and her and grabbed the warrior violently by the throat before pinning her to the door she guarded. She moved to use her weapon but Tiberius was quick with his words.
“Listen well to me.” He spoke as his eyes meet hers and his gaze violated her mind.
“You will give me passage to the room you guard and say nothing evermore of this incident.” He commanded and broke the will of the much younger vampire.
Surly enough the Ancient was ushered in to a room of marble and onyx gilded with gold and silver as sanguine colored silk hung from the rafters. At the center of the room lay a circle made of stone, likely to be used as a table and beyond this a throne enshrined with depictions of serpents, a throne for the Crone herself no doubt. This room was one of the private chambers for Desponia and her harem of followers, there was no telling of the debauchery that took place and all manner of gruesome sacrifices carried out.
The doors again swung open and Haloise and Desponia entered the room with a slew of their advisors and retainers at their side. When they came upon the central part of the room the Crones eyes shot wide open and a trickle of anger was only just noticeable upon her face, for atop her throne sat Tiberius with an ever so cocky smile upon his face. For his part Haloise remained blissfully ignorant as to the true identity of this interloper and was somewhat intrigued by his audacity.
“My thanks lady Desponia for bringing about the reunion.” He stood and began descending the stairs which lead to the throne.
“Your reputation proceeds you cousin, when I heard you were to meet with lady Desponia I had to take the opportunity to finally meet you.” He made his way towards the emperor without so much as a quiver of doubt and extended his hand in friendship.
“It is a pleasure to meet you but you will have to forgive but have we meet before, you seem familiar.” Haloise returned the gesture.
“My name is Atticus Giovanni, my Brood has long been wanderers, I know of you simply through reputation.” Tiberius spoke but a jolt of excitement ran through his body as he came in to contact with Haloise.
“When these arrangements were made I must say I was surprised that there were other Giovanni not begotten of that get Tiberius.” Desponia spoke saving face and offering Tiberius an insult.
“Our Clan is not so narrow.” Haloise added.
“But there is work that must be done, I am sure you understand Atticus.” Haloise moved to get on with the evenings plans.
“Oh but of course.” Tiberius snickered, there would be a chance for him to make a move after all the game had just begun.
The gathered parties took their seats and were quick to get to harsh bickering with one another, insults flew as arrows through the air and it became abundantly clear that this whole façade was but a show and that the only real deal would be made if Desponia and Haloise could speak with one another free of their courtiers. The bickering grew louder and only enraged Tiberius more and he could have no more of it.
“Enough!” He shouted, it felt good to release some of the pent up aggression.
“Who are you to speak” one of the rabble shouted back.
“One with enough sense to use his eyes to see what is happening here.” Tiberius shouted the man down his eyes peering to Haloise and Desponia who he could sense were equally frustrated with the situation.
“The only ones with voice that matter here are the Emperor and the Crone yet I have yet to hear them speak above a whisper. To move things along I would like to issue a challenge.” He turned his attention to Haloise.
“A private meeting clearly is what is needed not this brash display of robes, I challenge the emperor to a simple physical contest, should he win Desponia must travel from her temple to a place of the Emperors choosing, should I triumph well it would seem the Emperor will stay here for a time free of you rabble.” He had a wide grin smile on his face, the thought of facing Haloise again was pleasing to him and he knew Desponia would be intrigued at the prospect.
The crowd of imperials was ready to rage but Haloise raised his hand and they fell silent.
“I accept.” His command hushed them and Desponia carried an amused smile.
