Hey, First things first we're going to need what playbooks you are all interested in playing. I'm also wondering if we want to use the special skins suck as "The Chosen" or "The Serpentine." They shift the game's tone slightly and although that's not a bad thing let's make sure it fits with what we all want as a group.

Hey, Introduce your characters here, Just a name, skin and a brief overview will be fine. We'll get to history in a bit but for now just a bit of backstory.

Also we need ideas for a town? Anything that your character would specifically need in order to live there? Did the ghost die in the town and if so where? Is it by the coast? By a forest? In the middle of bumfuck nowhere? Is it an old boomtown gone quiet or a fairly recent government housing initiative?

Let's get a real feel for this place before we populate it.

Hello. I'll be playing Duncan Wright. The Skin I had in mind for him was the Queen, with a supernatural hivemind bent. Community minded youth. Part of the school council. Lives with an uncle who is CEO of a pharmaceutical company.

On the subject of the Chosen, I'd rather not have that Skin in the game. It skews the story more towards monster hunting than being teenage monsters. As for the Serpentine, I think the major effect it has is more family related story elements. That I am fine with.

For the town, something in the middle would be nice. Neither a large city, not backwater. Somewhat insular, to the extend that supernatural stuff won't be jumped on by people and organizations from outside the community in a big way. I'm partial to temperate climates with forests and coast line.

I will keep my Gender as is until another player comes along and balances it out. If not, I could make my character female. I am most likely going for Ghost.

I was thinking I would be the child of the local Pentecostal preacher Davis Pristine. A bit of a right wing fire-breather, Davis has thrown his lot in with most of the political types and extreme media personalities. However, when it came to his own daughter coming out as gay-he and his wife more or less banished her from their lives. This did not have a good effect on the already troubled Mark...Although If my character ends up being female I will just remove the sister and make the now female Mark an only child.

Hi all! I'm playing as Mikkel with the Fae skin.

Right now, I'm picturing him as a year long exchange student, who comes from a more traditional family and now finally has the chance to spread his wings a bit more without their oversight. Something of the Fae with some Black Forest vibes.

As far as gender, I think I would prefer to stick with playing a male, although Mikkel has been pushing the boundaries of what that looks like, especially since he doesn't have his parents breathing down his neck.

Town... I'm pretty flexible. I'd vote for something small to medium, maybe a slightly conservative farming community? I'm also totally down for temperate and coastal too.

I am fine with all the PCs being male. Play the type of character you think will be the most fun for the game and yourself.

Had an idea. How does Mikkel feel about nature, given he is Fae? Would a logging community or something similar that might be considered an attack on nature cause him to feel strongly?

Hmm... I was more going for the "kidnapped at birth, always out of place" vibe for the Fae, but I like that angle too. I think a logging community would be a fun setting.

Being the nature lover in a logging community would probably just add to the "out of place" side of things.

You could still have Mikkel kidnapped at birth, not knowing they are Fae if that is what you are going for. Those feelings about nature could be an instinctive element, or something similar. Mikkel might also want to do something about the damage to nature, giving you some story objectives to peruse/rope other PCs into.

Yeah, that sounds solid to me. I definitely want to keep the idea that he doesn't know he's 'special' yet. But he has some instinctive Fae aspects to him-- and being into nature definitely fits (maybe getting more and more upset about the logging as he sees it more fully).

Ethan is Infernal.

I plan on playing up the addiction metaphor, and hopefully drag you all into Ethan's dramatic bullshit as much as possible, as he flies high and then crashes hard, over and over again, despite his best intentions.

Hello, all! I'm extremely new to this system and style of game, so please bear with me as I try to figure everything out. ^_^;

For my character, Al is a Hollow, and my idea for him is that he's basically a science experiment that was created in a lab a few months ago, genetically created to be the next Albert Einstein (who he's named after). He's very much a genius, and absorbs new information very quickly, but there's still a lot he doesn't understand, mostly involving people and emotions. One big part of that is that he's ridiculously naive, and is very gullible about most things people tell him.

I don't have an issue with all the characters being male, though I also won't object if someone wants to switch to female. I'd prefer to keep Al as he is, though.

Alright. Good so far. I'm getting a Gravity falls/Acradia Bay kind of town vibe. Somewhere in Oregon maybe? So all male then! Should be interesting!

Just some specific questions about the town then we can dive into Strings!

Duncan-Where do people hangout in town? Is there a mall or a cosy diner or underneath a bypass or something?

Mark-Most interesting thing that happened in the town, doesn't have to be recent. Maybe a while back it was the hub of outlaw band?

Mikkel-Most beautiful place in town.

Ethan-What kind of communities live within the town? Is it predominately one race and if not how does each one interact with each other?

Al-Strangest place in town? What makes it strange?

Also, just to make things easier, please write out your playbooks and what choices you've made regarding them into your character bio along with anything else you might think relevant.

Oregon sounds good to me.

The big hangout out is "the Plaza". A sort of small park/public square combo at the center of town with some gazeebos that are semi-private. Street vendors set up booths or stands in the area and food trucks park at the perimeter. So you can easily grab a quick bite or buy some wares. Or just hang out in some park type space.

Mark:

I've got some definite ideas involving an ancient evil that sleeps beneath the town, only awakened by recent events/intrusions.

His patron can be accessed, at least at the start, at a rift in the earth somewhere in the forest, where a paper mill did some illegal dumping in the early 80s -- though as things progress and he gains powers, it may make appearances in the form of nightmares and visions, or direct possession, or pet cemetery style zombie resurrections.

I'm definitely enjoying a vibe of a cthonic lovecraftian horror rather than a slick luciferan bargain.

MC:

There's a strong blue collar presence in the town.  The old paper mill has been shut down for more than a generation now, and there were a couple of decades of economic decline before industry deregulation brought logging back, and brought it back hard. The blue collar folks tend to be white males, the women folk tend to be stay at home mothers or work in retail, food service, or at the school.

There's also been an influx of artists and environmentalists, who have come to town to protect the area from exploitation and to take advantage of its natural beauty before it's lost forever.  The artists and environmentalists are multicultural, definitely more liberal, and the blue collar types don't really like them much.

Finally, there is the white collar logging company folks.  Not many of them, but they don't fit into either group.  They're business educated, mostly white but more cosmopolitan, and they're all general more interested in being promoted out of here than in settling down.  They tend to be more socially liberal like the artists/environmentalists, but their economic interests are in line with the harder working blue collar community.

At one point, at the town's founding-right where the old Mill ended up being-there was a large presence of Native Americans. Just outside the Mill was some sort of carved stone embankment, marked with mystic symbols, strange totems, and a burial ground. No one tribe ever actually lay claim to it-and yet in 1983 they got in declared a historical site, thus preventing the owners of the Mill from buying up the land. The damage was already done however, as much of the land had been taken over already.

Ethan:

Sounds good. No doubt Preacher Davis Pristine would think of this otherworldly presence as 'the devil', despite the fact he has no real frame of reference. The Native American historical site might be the one thing holding this being back, and due to the owners of the Mill taking all that land, it might now be failing.

Stats
Name-Mara Pristine(Need a name change to my character)
Skin-Ghost
Look-Out of Place
Eyes-Hollow
Origin-Left to die
Backstory:
Mara came out to her parents, and they proceeded to banish her from their lives. Her taste for the dramatic caused her timing to be terrible, as she told them during a particularly bad storm. Because her famous right wing father held such sway in town, few people where willing to help her, and she easily could have died due to exposure to the elements.

Expect the next day she came to school...as if nothing had happened. But she was very different.

Someone knows how she died...and that in fact she is still dead. They get two strings on her.

Mara has been inside someone's bedroom while they where sleeping. She gets a string on them.

Stats: Hot-1, Cold-1, Volatile 1, Dark 2

Moves-Unresolved Trauma, Project Blame, Limitless.

You’re one of the special ones. A sovereign beauty. You deserve more than the rest of this wretched world does. You deserve the will and worship of those around you. And it’s not only because you’re better than them. It’s because you make them better. Stronger, more beautiful, complete. They’d be nothing without you.

Eyes: Captivating
Look: Stunning
Origin: First born of the hivemind.

Hot 2 Cold 1 Volatile -1 Dark -1

Queen Moves
The Clique [Connected]: You’re at the head of the toughest, coolest, most powerful clique around. They count as a gang.
quote:
I am thinking Duncan is the student council president, and his clique is the student council. We're "connected".

Streaming: You have a telepathic connection with your gang members. You can always hear their emotions and fears. If you try to hear specific thoughts, Gaze Into the Abyss about it and add 1 to your roll.

Darkest Self:
They’ve failed you. Again. This whole mess is their fault, and why should you have to suffer the consequences of their idiocy? You need to make an example out of each of them -- a cruel and unwavering example. You escape your Darkest Self when you relinquish part of your power to someone more deserving, or when you destroy an innocent person in order to prove your might.

"Sex" Move:
When you have sex with someone, they gain the Condition one of them. While the Condition remains, they count as part of your gang.

Strings:
- Name three side characters who are members of your gang. Gain a String on each.
- You find someone threatening. Give them a String on you, and take a String on them.

Background:
Duncan's parents had trouble conceiving. Nothing worked. Doctors said it would never happen. Then uncle William offered to let them take part in an experimental fertility treatment his company was working on. Nine months later Duncan was born. Six months after that his father had committed suicide and his mother tried to drown him. The woman had lost her mind and was institutionalized. Fortunately William adopted Duncan after the ordeal. Despite this tragedy, and a few babysitters that went missing, Duncan seems to have developed into a well adjusted young man with a close group of friends. A lot of those friends are on the student council.

On the subject of sex moves, would it be acceptable if making out or something ... less ... counted towards triggering them? Otherwise we should all have characters that are eighteen years old.

The strangest place in town is a 'small' mansion built just on the edge of town, built by a wealthy recluse who wasn't fond of visitors. Even though the recluse died many years ago, no one else has moved into the building, nor has any attempt been made to tear it down - no one knows the exact reasons why, but a popular theory is that the mansion is haunted.

(Is that alright for a 'strange place'?)

And, sorry for my ignorance, but...what exactly is a 'playbook'? I couldn't find any reference to the term in my book, and an online search didn't turn anything up, either. Is it basically the specifics regarding the Skin that applies to the character?

Playbook is often used interchangeably with "Skin". For example, my character's Skin is the Queen. Mara/Mark's is the Ghost.

Fae Moves
Fairy Contract:
If someone breaks a promise or contract made to you, take a String on them. When spending a String to even out the score and get justice on a broken promise, add these options to Pulling Strings:
-- they fuck up something simple at a crucial moment,
suffering 1 Harm if appropriate,
-- add 2 to your roll on an act of vengeance

Lure: Whenever someone makes a promise to you, they mark experience. Whenever someone breaks a promise to you, you mark experience.

Darkest Self:
Everything you say seems a promise. Everything you hear seems a promise. If a promise is broken, justice must be wrought in trickery or blood. You aren’t subject to the human rules of mercy. To escape your Darkest Self, you must in some way rebalance the scales of justice.

"Sex" Move:
When you lie naked with another, you can ask them for a promise. If they refuse, take 2 Strings on them.

Strings:
--You wear your heart on your sleeve. Give everyone one String.
--You’ve captured someone’s fancy. Gain 2 Strings on them.

Background:
"Mikkel was born to a Catholic family living in the Black Forest of Germany. I am not Mikkel. His parents brought him home on the night of a full moon, the seventh child of a seventh child and, y'know-- what did they expect to happen?"

Even without knowing his heritage, Not-Mikkel grew up an outsider to his traditional religious family, taking up dance while his brother's played football, and getting into more than a little trouble when his parents finally caught him trying on his sisters' clothes. Every choice he makes, from the clothes he wears to the environmental causes he support, has caused the rift with his family to widen. Now, during his year abroad in America, he finally sees his chance to choose who he really is without worrying about their approval-- but old habits die hard, and Mikkel still hopes he can find the honesty and support from his new classmates that he never got from his family. (On that note, would anyone be up for being Mikkel's host family?)

Duncan Wright:
On the subject of sex moves, would it be acceptable if making out or something ... less ... counted towards triggering them? Otherwise we should all have characters that are eighteen years old.

Both would work for me! I've played with aging up the characters before, but the PG-13 quality of just making-out sounds rather appealing (I'm just worried about the line we would walk with the Rpol rules).

Also, as a native, Oregon sounds perfect to me :)

Working on the most beautiful place. I was also thinking about an abandoned mansion/museum but too slow to post, so I'm working on an option B.
