Re: Fires of Creation: Mechanical Mysteries

After the release of another arc of electricity, Kelaria sprints forward much more quickly than one would expect from someone so heavily armored and rejoins with the others in the relative safety of the stale, grey-and-white halls on the other side. To the left is a room full of metal machines with colored lights, screens, and gauges blinking away with periodic clicks and churns and a large, round steel table with what seems to be a recreation of the desert outside in floating blue lights. Continuing past the room and down a twisting hallway, the party soon passes another room--this one partly lit red by the sun outside pouring through the western wall which seems to overlook the desert outside--although there was no sign of this structure visible when the party had traversed the expanse. Lying in the room is the bisected corpse of some strange, four-armed humanoid with a large, sloped head--unmoved from when it had been slain but starting to stink up the place worse that it had in its unlife.

After passing through two more large doors, each one opened briefly and pulled up and into the ceiling by a touch of a panel beside the doorway before closing again moments later. With some experimenting the party discovers that holding their hand on the panel keeps the door raised to allow more to pass through more casually than hurrying to beat the automatic shutting. Finally, the party arrives in the section of the cave where they had left two days before. A large metal desk with blinking lights and strange glowing panels sits atop a raised area on the east side of this room near a circular table. Two couches covered with black material sit to the south a pair of black metal pillars. Splatters of dried blood stain the floor and walls near a pair of doors to the north, while here and there patches of rust-red mold and fungus cling to the southern wall. The room itself is brightly lit by glowing panels on the ceiling.

Behind the door to the east, closed but unlocked, should be the bodies of three vegepygmies slain two days before.

Re: Fires of Creation: Mechanical Mysteries

Morin nodded to himself as the party surveyed the area.  So far so good, everything was just how the party left it.  Raising a finger to his lips to indicate the party should be silent, he crept quietly over to the door to the east.  The vegepygmies could clearly hear through the doors, judging by them getting the jump on the party the first time.  Best to be quick and quiet, in the hopes of catching the plant people off guard.

Once everyone was through Zorden trailed after them through the strange hallways that were becoming more familiar.

Upon reaching the 'hub' room once again he kept his peace on Morin's signal and waited for the man to indicate something based on his findings.

Kelaria looked around still impressed.  The awe was beginning to subside, as she was seeing wonder after wonder, but she couldn't help but admire this room, exploring it, running her gauntleted finger along every surface.  She paused as she saw the others take a position, wondering what for.

The party makes ready and moves slowly, preparing for anything as they open the eastern door to reveal the room as they had left it ... both other doors in this hallway still glowing brown from their panels--showing they are locked--and three small, humanoid, plant-based corpses strewn about.

For Kelaria's sake, Zorden indicated the door to their left ("south" on the map) inside the short corridor that was now opened.

"Somewhere beyond that door are more of those,"  He informed her, pointing towards the corpses.  "As well as some other things.  We fought them a bit before, but decided to just lock them up as we were trying to find the councilor as quickly as we could.  Now, we'll need to deal with them as hopefully what we're looking for is somewhere in that direction."

Cain carefully prods one of the corpses with his foot. "That's pretty much it, yes. Though I am not sure what we are looking for is really in there. These plants or fungi or whatever they are don't strike me as very open for diplomacy. Assuming this mysterious woman and her party are the cause for all this mess, I don't see how they could have passed by pygmies without killing them. We might have missed another passage they took, somewhere in this maze."

Locking the door open behind them in case they needed to make a speedy escape, Morin moved to south door and pulled out his brown security keycard.  Staying out of the discussion for now, he took up a position by the panel and got ready to open it once the others had gotten into position.

"They are not Metal."  Was Kelaria's only reaction, like she was disappointed.  "And it seems they do not belong here.  Are they fierce?"

Though do we, she wondered.  She considered her hammer, put its head down on the ground for a moment as if checking her gauntlets, then hoisted it.  If she was their size, she'd try running inside Kelaria's reach too.  They'd be in for a nasty surprise if they did.

"Feisty for certain."  Zorden figured after a moment.

"As to whether they belong here, can't say.  Don't know how they came to be here.  Depending on who you ask, a lot of things would be said to not belong here.  For instance, if the League's agents were here, they'd say anyone who wasn't them didn't belong.  Since they lay claim to all the metal, regardless of who found or fought for it."  He added, a clear note of disdain creeping into his voice.

Re: Fires of Creation: Mechanical Mysteries

After Kelaria and Cain take up positions in the doorway and Zorden moves to a position which will provide both cover and a good view of the coming hallway, Morin unlocks the southern doorn with a tap of his brown access card to the panel followed by a press of his hand to command it to open. As quickly as every other powered door in these metal caves the door rises into the ceiling with a quiet hiss and reveals another empty hallway. The wide hall curves slightly and at the opposite are two doorways--a part of the pincer attack the party stumbled into two days before. The panels beside each of the doors are unlit, signifying that they are unlocked.

Kelaria moved in carefully, but she didn't open anything.  She tried to see if there was anything that signified the recent presence of their foes.  She considered how tight the hall was as well, but kept her hammer ready for the moment.  If they did get in a fight in here the enemy would effectively be forced to line up.

Ionaya maintained a distance from those in the front, keeping her senses peeled while looking for trouble. She waited until the doors in front of Kelaria and Cain opened in front of them, and they moved forward, she followed behind beside Zorden, letting Morin go ahead of her as he wished.

She prepared to cast Mage Armor at the first sight of anything moving towards the party, considering that they might be wandering quite a while before encountering foes. Yet, while listening to Zorden, Morin, and Cain talk, she was almost convinced that something was right around the next corner waiting to attack.

Morin nodded at Zorden's comment. "Right." He agreed, thinking back to their earlier encounter.  "There was a weedwhip.  They got a nasty stench and a nasty poison, but it shouldn't be that big of a deal."

Remembering that he had stocked up on scrolls on their day off, Morin quickly rifled through his scrollcase and drew out one that seemed appropriate: heroism.  A wiser man would have cast it before opening the first locked door, but better late than never.  Putting a hand on Cain as the half-elf fiddled with the nearby door, Morin read the scroll, filling Cain with a rush of vigour and courage.

OOC: Before we open the door, I'm using one of my scrolls of heroism on Cain.  He gets +2 to all attacks, saves, and skill checks for 30 mins.

The party moves carefully forward into the next hallway, locking the door to their left as a precaution. So far, without an Unseen Servant deliberately drumming about, even Kelaria's heavy steps haven't seemed to stir anything up in this Vegepygmy territory. He then readied himself for the double doors at the end to be opened in case the creatures they'd fought earlier were still there and waiting.

Cain winces as Morin casts his spell, but then nods gratefully at him. Belatedly drawing his weapon, he casts one of his own protection spells before reaching for the door panel. And after a quick glance at the rest of the party to make sure everyone is ready, he hits the open rune.

Re: Fires of Creation: Mechanical Mysteries

After a moment of preparation(Cain Shield 1>0, Arcane Pool 4>3) Cain presses the wall panel to send the door into the ceiling and reveal the room beyond. The stench of mold and decay fills this open, dark chamber, no doubt created by the thick blanket of fungal matter coating the floor. Several chairs sit before work tables containing unusual tools and equipment, while a row of doors line the curved southern wall. Unlike the rest of these underground structures, there is no light source in this room besides what spills in through the now-open door. Quickly the stench of the room wafts out into the hall and envelopes Cain, Kelaria, and Morin(DC 12 Fort Save or sickened for 1 minute.) Startled by the sudden movement and light, a single vegepygmy carrying an upturned steel helmet and the large man-tall yellow flower of its pet weedwhip turn to meet the party.

Even though he was expecting the stench, Morin couldn't help but retch at the weedwhip's noxious odor.  "Pee-yoo!  That's the smell I was talking about.  Let's hurry up and make that weedwhip ex-stinked!"  As always, Morin's terrible pun filled those who heard it with the urge to commit violence.

Chuckling a bit at his own joke, Morin advanced into the room and drew his lasso.

REACTION: fails his fort save, and is sickened.
STANDARD: Activate Inspire courage (11/12 rounds remaining).  Everyone gets +1 attack, +1 weapon damage, +1 to saves vs fear.
MOVE:     Move into the room, to the square right of the vegepygmy.  Drawing lasso as he moves.

As the doors open, Zorden's eyes scanned the dim room for a moment, and lifted his weapon to his shoulder and took aim at the weedwhip.

"Gonna be loud."  He warned, mainly for Kelaria's benefit, and then a moment later discharged the gun, the report echoing in the tight confines of the corridor.

Re: Fires of Creation: Mechanical Mysteries

Consistently being careful about her proximity to Kelaria due to her heavy metal shod state, Ionaya found herself liking the straight forward nature of their iron maiden. However, when she found herself behind the walking tank, she reminded herself to be careful, because Kelaria's outward appearance occasionally reminded her of the metal beings that had tortured her recently.

As the door opened ahead of her, and she saw the unique plant and the vegepygmy, she quickly cast her Mage Armor spell, completing the casting just as Zorden's weapon was unleashed.

OOC: Casting Mage Armor on herself.
