Group 0 OOC thread...

Hello all

I played Star Frontiers in 1982, shortly after it was released. The game lasted less than year before we moved on something else, and I never played it again until now. Which is very odd, considering how much fun we had.

I'll need to read the rules again before I decide what to play, but it will be one of the original races, since I don't have any of the expansions.

Hi! I got Alpha Dawn in 1985, and we played it when we needed a break from D&D up until about 1992. Had a lot of fun chasing down Sathar agents in Port Loren, exploring Volturnus, and recreating the events from various sci-fi movies.

Hi! Similar story here. Alpha Dawn, Knight Hawks, Zebulon's Guide, this was a regular switch after completing a AD&D campaign. We really enjoyed the KH modules Warriors of White Light, Dramune Run, and Mutiny on the Elenor Moraes. I last played about 10 years ago in an online game hosted by an actual rocket scientist.

Max will be the team cleric medic / ranger environmentalist.

Well, I'm no rocket scientist, so I hope I don't disappoint you, Max. My own story is like yours - an overdose on AD&D led to me learning to referee Star Frontiers. We played a nice long campaign, where I stole from every sci-fi reference I could.

Original races are fine, as they're the ones I have the most experience with anyway - I didn't pick up a Zebulon's Guide until several years ago - I didn't like the changes to the Alpha Dawn system that ZG introduced, so we ignored it in my ftf groups.

Yazirian with a multitool here. I'll keep our gear in tip top shape and probably get good with robots in the near future (picked gyrojet weapons as my second skill ).

Is shifting points between abilities pairs still allowed? The character creation post doesn't mention that step, but then we are not for rolling stats either. Just checking if its an oversight or an actual rule change.

Yes it is. And the 180-point buy lets anyone be anything, even a Mentalist, but if that's what you want, then you have to make that trade somewhere. I just put that line in to make it clear.

So do you guys think five is a good starting party, or should I drum up a few more players?

If we're all regulars from Nemrac, I think we're good with 5 to get started. But more is merrier, as the saying goes. FYI, my character sheet will be ready tomorrow.

I'll try to get my character sheet done tomorrow.  I have no problem with getting more players, but have no problem with going with 5 PC's if everyone wants to get going.

A few of the blatant errors in my copy of the Expanded Rules:

- Standard equipment pack costs 250cr on page 4, 150cr on page 41.

- Bistol [sic] Bulletclip on page 40. In 1982, I made a pencil correction. :D

- Techkit has mass 12kg on page 40, 20kg on page 44.

- Editing: Steve Winter on page 1. Oh wait that's not an error. LOL

Speaking of errors, you'll see that I adjusted the charts for different gravity fields than 1g. The main goof is the line that, "For every 0.1g less than 1.0g, the distance a character can leap and vault is increased 5 m." That's just too much, as you break both world records for high and long jump under .9g for every character (even Dralasites) and by Mars gravity (.4 g) everyone is a Superman.

Since you lose half a meter going up a tenth g, I changed the chart so that you gain half a meter per tenth g, not 5 m. By Moon gravity your vertical is still where it's supposed to be, and so is pretty much everything else.

Standard Equipment Packs cost 150 Cr. And a Techkit weighs 12 kg.

Character sheet is done. I didn't buy a much, since I don't know yet what we'll be doing. Hate to gear up for planet exploration if we're chasing down smugglers.

I'm going public to hopefully get a few more players before we get started - the adventure I want to start you out with has a sweet spot at the table between 8 and 10. I've run it at GaryCons in the past, and it went over well, but 5 is too small a party.

Might want to do it sooner than later, before we lose any more of the special guests.

It sounds like most of us had the same experience with Star Frontiers. In my case, it was another RPG and in my favorite genre.

I'm thinking Dinger might be a Star Law Ranger, if that's allowed and fits.

Re: Group 0 OOC thread...

I'm a noob when it comes to Star Frontiers, my sci-fy rpg back in the day was Gamma World.  The system looks really interesting,  and I've been wanting to play in a pure skill-based game.

My go to whenever trying out a new rule set is to play the tank, so Emmons will be the big dumb enforcer type ("You point, I hit").
