Napax:
"Language? Ferengi, I think, but maybe Fedspeak... translated?" Napax replies finally, as he appeared to have nodded off.

"Yes, there were other sounds... a ringing for a bit, then a clicking, and then a buzzing. I... thought it was other languages that weren't being translated."

"Your symptoms are unusual. I'm going to relieve you of your duties for the time being so that I can run some tests and get to the bottom of this. If you're up for it, I would use some of the relaxation methods you prescribe to your patients while I set up a test regime."

"Relaxation? Hard to do with all that noise," Napax replies. His voice is a bit stronger. "It's the lobes, you know. Hear everything. That's always been a good thing... till now."

Re: USS Mongoose - Medical Bay

The main treatment at the moment is just mild sedation to tone down the sensory overload.

Transmetaphasia is primarily a neurological disorder... either nerves have gotten crossed somehow or else his brain structure has been scrambled. The former doesn't seem likely because he would have had that condition for a long time. At least with the latter, it could have happened spontaneously at this time. Otherwise, some chemical or radiation could have caused the sudden change.

Jillian will need to run an extensive blood test for unexpected chemicals.

In the case of radiation, she'll need a deep radiation scan to look for residual traces. That might not produce any result, however, as the radiation that triggered the disruption in his brain might have been a brief burst. She might have to do a molecular-level neurological scan to see if Napax was/is particularly susceptible to some type of energy.

Normal medical scans don't go down to the molecular level; they work at the physical/chemcial level--temperature, blood pressure, blood composition, EEG, EKG, MRI, etc.

"Would a Starduster be too much to ask for? Or would it interfere with your scans?" Napax replies. "Then again, would I see the flavors? Or taste the color? Maybe I should just stick to a glass of water."

Re: USS Mongoose - Medical Bay

It was important to determine what the cause might have been or else even if she cured Napax, it could wind up being all for naught if the cause reoccurred and brought back the same problem.

While she could locate or eliminate a drug cause, she'd have to determine if the effect was in the nerve transmission or the brain cells got scrambled in order to figure out that cause.

Re: USS Mongoose - Medical Bay

Walking into the Medical Bay, Doctor Abdool surveyed the area and noted the Chief Medical Officer's desk. As one of the more recent additions to the ship from Narendra Station, she made it her business to get caught up on matters that were essential to the Medical Department. She'd been in charge of the lower officers and the trauma teams, and her adept ability to triage had made her an asset to the Ship's Medical Team.

She went to the desk and keyed in her own access to the computer, taking note of the duty schedules. At the top was Sergei Kondratev, who was listed as 'On Away Team'. The thought that the Centauri would have been on such a dangerous mission gave the Doctor pause - it was usually Ensigns and other people that went on such missions. Missed my chance to shine, I guess, she mentally shrugged. He'll likely have another interesting story to tell, at least..

Abdool went to the chair behind the desk and sat on the edge of the seat, while she brought a dark hand up and rested her chin on her knuckles and watched the computer sift through the duty assignment rosters. Her brown eyes blinked as she noticed her name: "L. Abdool - Interim Assistant - Filing and Report completion." A soft, disgusted noise could be heard while she rolled her eyes. "Job isn't finished until the paperwork is done." she remarked to no one in particular. But it was true enough - reports had to be filed for the Captain to sign off on, and records kept that would be sent to Starfleet Command that would detail the Mongoose's trials and tribulations in the Expanse.

"No time like the present, then." Abdool reached back for the handrests to the chair and pulled it forward and sat fully in the chair. She winced softly and placed a hand on her left hip and rubbed it. It was a reminder - one she'd rather have forgotten - that space as well as family, could be dangerous. And sometimes, when they acted together, a deadly combination ...

Re: USS Mongoose - Medical Bay

As Laila looks at the logs and the current status report (monitored by the computer anyway), she sees that Dr. Sergei Kondratev, the CMO, was sent over to the Klingon facility with Away Team #1. The Away Team is still there.

She also sees that LtJG Jillian Svensson was sent with Away Team #2 to the alien ship.

Laila also sees that the Ferengi Counselor, Napax, is undergoing medical treatment for transmetaphasia.

Jillian hadn't finished the tox screens to see if Napax's problem was chemical based or, more probable, radiation-based.

OOC: Oops! Sorry, forgot to post it hear. Thought you'd read the Bridge post and just jump in!

On his way to the transporter room, Skig called Dypec on his comm and swung by Sickbay to get Jillian.

"Lieutenant Svensson, your presence is required on an Away Team to the alien ship... in case there are injuries as we try to repel Klingon boarders," Skig informs Jillian.

"We aren't expecting you to fight, but you should bring a phaser just in case."

Re: USS Mongoose - Medical Bay

Sitting in the chair in the Medical Chief's Office, Abdool walked herself through the datapadds and filled out information as best she could on her own while gathering information at need and filling in the rest. It was a thankless task most of the time, she knew, but nevertheless ...

She'd heard the short and sharp tones of a Tellerite's voice as another of the Medical team was being whisked away - this time to deal with an attack by Klingon borders. Klingons were twice as objectionable as any other race in the Federation. Her mother was noted for cursing in their language when something really set her off ... and cost her a relationship with one of her Academy classmates that begun to get a little 'fresh' with her. When she'd used one of her favourite epithets - petaQ - the other Cadet had beat a quick withdrawal before any more weapons could be brought to bear ...

She managed a half-smile at the remembrance and moved on to the Ferengi Counselor, Napax. According to what Svensson had noted, the Counselor was undergoing treatment for  ... 'transmetaphasia'. From what Abdool knew, the condition might have something to do with radiation, but Svensson hadn't finished the toxification screen to see whether it was radiological or chemical in nature. A quick peek into the file should tell me what's been done and not done ...

Abdool rose from the desk, to see if Svensson was still here, or where the screens had been placed in order to finish them herself.

Jillian patted the Ferengi counselor on the shoulder. "Dr. Abdool will be taking over your case." She looked to the other officer for a nod as she gathered a medical kit and phaser for the away mission.

Re: USS Mongoose - Medical Bay

Abdool rose from her seat and headed in the direction of the Medical bay when she caught sight of Svensson's back as the woman moved down the hallway and headed in the direction of the Transporter Room. She slowed her pace and gave a small shrug of her shoulders when the young blonde disappeared around the corner. 'Duty calls ...'  she thought.

Abdool walked into the Medical Bay and took a quick look around - it was an ingrained habit she'd picked u as a younger intern when she'd been tasked with the upkeep of medical stocks. A quick scan of the room showed that nothing needed immediate attention and her shoulders loosened slightly.

She turned her attention to the Ferengi Councillor and picked up the small datapadd that was close by the alien's bedside. A furrow appeared on her brow, one that darkened further as she read further into the report. She looked up from the device and to the Ferengi with a discerning look. "Afternoon, Councillor ... heard you've had a bit of an ... 'experience'. Why don't you tell me all you've gone through, and we'll see where we need to go from there, hmm?"

Re: USS Mongoose - Medical Bay

No, no roll is needed to understand the condition. You do need to roll to determine the cause of it. It's not known to be an infectious disease, but it could conceivably be a mutated virus... either natural or engineered. Also, it might only target Ferengi.

The two other possibilities is it could be caused by radiation that affects the neurons or it could be a chemical that does the same thing.

Depending on the cause, it might have different treatment, and even if the neurons are unscrambled, without knowing the cause it could reoccur.

"Of course, Commander," Jillian responds.

She'd already viewed what little data on the alien ship had been garnered from the sensors. True scans hadn't been made yet; the Mongoose was still too far away.

She'd been more fascinated by the star system detected.

"Do you really think there might be survivors over there?"
