Sergei opens the door and rushes in, barking at the few staff who had already reported in: "Prepare to receive 5 casualties. Quickly!"

They spring into action, prepping hyposprays, dermal regenerators, tricorders, and other tools.

"Not many here yet, but they'll have to do." He thought as he helped them prepare.

On our way here, so I could transfer to this ship as its first officer. We received a distress call with a federation call signature. Our Captain with our signalling our intentions to the Klingon Escort ship we had. As soon as we were off our designated warp path, they open fire and boarded. Killed the Captain, the first attack of the battle. I rallied the crew and we fought to protect our ship till we heard that an Orion had attached an antimatter bomb to our warp reactor. I took the  four crew with me and fought our way to the runabout. As we left the ship, the bird of prey targeted the runabouts impulse engines and I warped is here.

So, Silviene's TN (Task Number) was Control + Medicine, or 9 + 3, or 12. Unfortunately, her roll of 14 isn't equal to or under her TN, so she contributes no Successes to Kondratev's efforts. She does, however, assist, and doesn't cause any complications.

17:24, Today: Sergei Kondratev rolled 39 using 3d20, unique dice with rolls of 18,4,17.

OOC: I had interpreted what you said about the Medbay advantage as giving me an extra die if that's not so, that's my bad, you can change the result as you see fit. I have the Emergency Medicine focus, which I believe allows me to claim two successes in this case, since I rolled below my Medicine discipline.

((OOC: I was willing to let you have your first roll. Not sure what the two extra d20s were from. I guessed you meant one as the Ship's bonus, though I was going with the idea that the Medical Bay wasn't fully staffed yet. On the other hand, you have access to all the equipment, including the biobeds.

In fact, I think I will go with your first roll... of 1,4,5,1))

Since you rolled two natural '1's, both of those generated 2 Successes each, and both the 4 and 5 are Successes, so that's a total of 6 Successes. Since you only needed 2 to succeed at the Task, you perform the Task without any complications.

That would give you 4 Momentum. Now here's where you needed to define your Task better. So, the four Crew were on 'death's door' per Miranda's posts. Your first 2 Successes easily change that so that they are stable/out of the woods. This early in the game, I'd say use the Momentum to improve the results, so that all 4 of the Crew are much better.

As it is, we never really established whether all 4 Crew were a single Task, or each Crewman was a single Task. That's why it becomes important to define what you are trying to do in the first place. If you aren't sure, ask the GM!

((OOC: Oh I'm sorry, that very first roll I did was actually a test, which I should have labeled. I did that before we started the business with the survivors XD. In the future, I'll be more precise. I was treating the healing of the 4 crewmen as a single task, but I agree, in the future it would make more sense to treat each individual separately.))

I spend the 4 momentum to achieve better results with each crewman.

With the help of Silviene, Sergei manages to quickly stabilize each patient and heal the worst of their wounds. He gives each one a sedative to sleep and recover.

He sets down his tools and turns to his audience. "Everyone should be alright now. With a few days rest they should be able to return to duty. It's fortunate the Commander got them here so quickly, or the outcome may not have been so good."

Miranda’s attenna’s move back and forth faster.

Our duty, is to attempt to understand a very confusing and complicated fluid battle situation in an increasing fluid and tense diplomatic situation. As Commander, not Ambassador, Worf who is the Tactical and Intelligence Officer Of Deep Space Nine and the USS Defiant would tell you. The Facts are there three ships involved in this encounter. The USS Catspaw, The Brelk Class Bird Of Prey and a so heavily modified Warbird that I believe was no longer being operated by its original owner but some group within the Syndicate or at very least a group of independent Orions. Another Fact, there were at least three different groups, that we know of on the Catspaw. Klingon boarding Parties, Yes multiple, at least one Orion party with a fusion bomb, and the crew including their soon to be transferred First Officer.
There was a confrontation on the Bridge between the Catspaw Captain and a Klingon boarding party in the bridge during the first few seconds of the encounter that resulted in casualties on both side which includes injury to said first officer and the fatality of the Captain. During, what appeared and sounded like a full fledged war on board a Federation starship, utilizing blades weapons. Specifically, Klingon Tk’leths, unarmed Starfleet offficers and crewmen, and said first officer using her ushaan-tor.  Also during great shipwide war, an Orion team bent on sowing chaos by sabotage, placed a fusion bomb in such a way to blow the warp core while it was on the ship multiple confirmations of by both Starfleet and Imperial forces confirmed said sabotage. I, said first officer who I remind you was acting Captain at this point ordered full evac of all Starfleet and Klingon forces, as even though are treaties are not in force they are not our enemies. Then I took the crewmen closeselt to me to a runabout. At that point we were twelve people, five of us made it to the runabout still fighting Klingons all the way. I took the Runabout out and piloted it it under impulse power at first spur of the Catspaw’s shuttlebay and my intention was all the way here on the original assigned path the Klingon’ssaid we could do. The next three events happened in order within seconds. First, Catspaw exploded almost like a new Star in space. Second, the Klingon ship, I assume attempting to hit the other starship in vicinity hit our runabout’s impulse engine. Third, I gave the command for the Runabout to exceed Warp 7 and came here to this system at Warp 9 in a more direct path then the Klingons originally proscribed. So, Doctor, your duty is to continue here in Ames bay and assume soon this mediation might be full of Klingons and Orions. You, protege Of Worf and I, need to follow the Admiral’s and or the Captain’s orders to gain mor info about this incident. Did I leave anything out Captain, Admiral?

Miranda holds her head as she falls to a knee.

"Ah, Just waiting for Lt. Commander Vinzz to arrive to work out the details with us. I figure if we all work together on this we can improve our teamwork all the more."

In reply to Silviene Felis (msg # 57):

The door into Medbay opens and Shard walks in, a PADD in his hand.  After a quick look around, he heads for Silviene and Sergei.

"Commanders." Shard says, nodding to each, "So, coordinated training.  I'm sure we each have thoughts on various training scenarios, but first I'd like us each to get a grasp of what the others expect the outcome of the training to accomplish for their Division."

"For instance, Commander Felis, what is it that you are expecting your Tactical Division people to bring to this exercise?  What skills and procedures are you hoping to have them exhibit?"

At first Shard politely looks at each speaker, but just after the Doctors first comment, both of Shards antennae turn to point back over his right shoulder -- and he quietly slips into what Humans call a "thousand yard stare" -- for several moments.

Just as suddenly, Shard seems to give himself a little shake, and he looks from Silviene to Sergei with an apologetic grin,

"I'm sorry. I was following what you were saying, but I thought I overheard an argument starting up, out in the corridor -- turned out to be a pair of engineers doing some good-natured ribbing getting a little loud."

"So.  While I basically agree with both of you, I don't think we should jump right into combat scenarios.  Our focus here, as the Doctor has said..." Shard nods to Sergei, "...is first to establish protocols for our people to work together under stress, not just to shoot at the same targets.  Perhaps a series of search-and-rescue scenarios in a variety of environments, including aboard damaged ships both with, and without, atmosphere."

"As for the three of us, I assume that each of us, individually, is competent at our jobs, so where we need to focus is our ability to understand the needs and methods of commanding each others personnel.  My belief is that we start this process by collectively observing and critiquing each others people, then we review each others reviews, pointing out where we might have been too easy or too hard on someone, or where we might have given a comment without taking some departmental factor we are unaware of into account."

"For example, I might be too harsh in marking down a Medic for being to slow to pull a weapon in defense of himself; whereas you, Doctor, would point out that the Medic is trained with that silly Ancient Human dogma -- the one about not hurting people?"

"Anyway, as you can see, my point is that, as a Security Officer -- and an Andorian -- I would tend to downplay a Medic's training not to hurt people as a weakness, whereas you, Doctor, would likely consider it a strength.  Commander Felis...actually, I'm not sure where you'd decide in this example.  But!  We need to address these differences in our command thinking, before I start sending your people into the grinder, or you start telling my people to hold their fire in the face of overt threats.  And they all need to know that we are aware of their concerns, and that we've worked it out between us."

Believing he sees some sign of reluctance on the part of Silviene, Shard asks her, "First Staff assignment, Commander Felis?", Shard smiles, "Well then, welcome to the PADD-Pushers Club.  You can forget any hopes of spending long, exciting hours exploring beneath exotic alien suns.  Your job now is to push data and send younger, lowly Junior Officers out to have all the fun!"

Silviene twitches her ear at Vinzz' assessment of her roll on board, but speaks mildly when forming her response.

"I think your Ideas for training our subordinates is a brilliant Idea, and we as bridge officers and heads of our respective departments will have to turn in performance reviews anyway, and this will give us a practical starting point. As to the three of us here being competent, while I assume that is true but it does not take into account how we would work together or as you said what personal belief or personality clashes might be like. My people treat their shipmates as if they were our clan. However I Need to build a bond with my crewmates to achieve an honorable and trusting link with those clanmates. As to weather or not I will ever go on an away mission or be delegating that responsibility, that is for the captain to decide and I am sure specialized skills would be taken into account."

Shard shrugged, "Fair enough." he responded.

"For now, since the Mongoose is only a few hours away from where Commander T'Shran reported the attack on the USS Catspaw, let's have the computer create six-person training teams - two Tactical, two Medical and two Security - at first based on personality compatibility. Later we can juggle the teams to incorporate interpersonal stressors into the equation."

"Once we've cleared the conflict area and headed into the Expanse, we can set up a schedule and begin the training routine."
Shard made a few entries onto his PADD.

As he typed, his PADD made a quiet, repetitive 'ping-ping' sound.

"Ah.  Duty calls.  I have to join my Assistant CSO and make an inspection of all the weapon lockers aboard to make sure they are properly equipped and charged." Shard nods to each of his companions, "Comanders.  I usually eat dinner at nineteen-hundred hours in The Burrow, if either of you would care to discuss this more."

She accepted the hypospray, double checked the drug and strength, before pressing it to her patient's neck. The device released the drug with a soft hiss. Picking up her tricorder she monitored its effect.

Re: USS Mongoose - Medical Bay

With Sergei on the Away Team, Jillian was now the acting CMO. She was also the resident doctor on rotation at the moment.

Terbutaline was a 'controlled' substance, so even if Nurse Brackett had correctly identified the Ferengi's condition and the treatment, which wasn't likely as, according to her records, she had no experience with Ferengi, she wouldn't have been allowed to prescribe or administer the drug.

She could have consulted the computer, or even activated the EMH, but as long as there were superior officers on board, her priority was to contact them.

The drug takes about 30 seconds to circulate into the lungs where it starts to have an instant result. Napax's breathing begins to improve.

Re: USS Mongoose - Medical Bay

While the initial symptoms were consistent with Ferengi sarcoidosis, these new 'symptoms' forced Jillian to rethink her first diagnosis.

She could not recall any medical condition that would produce both results. The main problem Federation doctors had with treating other species is that no other species, except the Vulcans, were as advanced in the medical sciences as the Federation. The Klingons, for instance, took a disease as a sign of weakness and therefore never bothered trying to treat it. If you recovered on your own, then that indicated you were strong. It was only in the last hundred years that the Klingons' contact with the Federation made them realize that diseases could be a weapon. That the Klingons understood.

After delving into the Federation data-banks, Jillian found a possibly related virus--the aphasia virus. Or, more precisely, a variation on it--transmetaphasia. Sometimes also know as sensory aphasia, and a variation of misophonia (synesthia), it means that Napax may have been hearing colors.

His sarcoidosis may have been triggered by his brain translating REM into pulmonary distress.

Re: USS Mongoose - Medical Bay

The main treatment at the moment is just mild sedation to tone down the sensory overload.

Transmetaphasia is primarily a neurological disorder... either nerves have gotten crossed somehow or else his brain structure has been scrambled. The former doesn't seem likely because he would have had that condition for a long time. At least with the latter, it could have happened spontaneously at this time. Otherwise, some chemical or radiation could have caused the sudden change.

Jillian will need to run an extensive blood test for unexpected chemicals.

In the case of radiation, she'll need a deep radiation scan to look for residual traces. That might not produce any result, however, as the radiation that triggered the disruption in his brain might have been a brief burst. She might have to do a molecular-level neurological scan to see if Napax was/is particularly susceptible to some type of energy.

Normal medical scans don't go down to the molecular level; they work at the physical/chemcial level--temperature, blood pressure, blood composition, EEG, EKG, MRI, etc.

It was important to determine what the cause might have been or else even if she cured Napax, it could wind up being all for naught if the cause reoccurred and brought back the same problem.

While she could locate or eliminate a drug cause, she'd have to determine if the effect was in the nerve transmission or the brain cells got scrambled in order to figure out that cause.

Re: USS Mongoose - Medical Bay

Walking into the Medical Bay, Doctor Abdool surveyed the area and noted the Chief Medical Officer's desk. As one of the more recent additions to the ship from Narendra Station, she made it her business to get caught up on matters that were essential to the Medical Department. She'd been in charge of the lower officers and the trauma teams, and her adept ability to triage had made her an asset to the Ship's Medical Team.

She went to the desk and keyed in her own access to the computer, taking note of the duty schedules. At the top was Sergei Kondratev, who was listed as 'On Away Team'. The thought that the Centauri would have been on such a dangerous mission gave the Doctor pause - it was usually Ensigns and other people that went on such missions. Missed my chance to shine, I guess, she mentally shrugged. He'll likely have another interesting story to tell, at least..

Abdool went to the chair behind the desk and sat on the edge of the seat, while she brought a dark hand up and rested her chin on her knuckles and watched the computer sift through the duty assignment rosters. Her brown eyes blinked as she noticed her name: "L. Abdool - Interim Assistant - Filing and Report completion." A soft, disgusted noise could be heard while she rolled her eyes. "Job isn't finished until the paperwork is done." she remarked to no one in particular. But it was true enough - reports had to be filed for the Captain to sign off on, and records kept that would be sent to Starfleet Command that would detail the Mongoose's trials and tribulations in the Expanse.

"No time like the present, then." Abdool reached back for the handrests to the chair and pulled it forward and sat fully in the chair. She winced softly and placed a hand on her left hip and rubbed it. It was a reminder - one she'd rather have forgotten - that space as well as family, could be dangerous. And sometimes, when they acted together, a deadly combination ...

She also sees that LtJG Jillian Svensson was sent with Away Team #2 to the alien ship.

Laila also sees that the Ferengi Counselor, Napax, is undergoing medical treatment for transmetaphasia.

Jillian hadn't finished the tox screens to see if Napax's problem was chemical based or, more probable, radiation-based.

Sitting in the chair in the Medical Chief's Office, Abdool walked herself through the datapadds and filled out information as best she could on her own while gathering information at need and filling in the rest. It was a thankless task most of the time, she knew, but nevertheless ...

She'd heard the short and sharp tones of a Tellerite's voice as another of the Medical team was being whisked away - this time to deal with an attack by Klingon borders. Klingons were twice as objectionable as any other race in the Federation. Her mother was noted for cursing in their language when something really set her off ... and cost her a relationship with one of her Academy classmates that begun to get a little 'fresh' with her. When she'd used one of her favourite epithets - petaQ - the other Cadet had beat a quick withdrawal before any more weapons could be brought to bear ...

She managed a half-smile at the remembrance and moved on to the Ferengi Counselor, Napax. According to what Svensson had noted, the Counselor was undergoing treatment for  ... 'transmetaphasia'. From what Abdool knew, the condition might have something to do with radiation, but Svensson hadn't finished the toxification screen to see whether it was radiological or chemical in nature. A quick peek into the file should tell me what's been done and not done ...

Abdool rose from the desk, to see if Svensson was still here, or where the screens had been placed in order to finish them herself.

Jillian patted the Ferengi counselor on the shoulder. "Dr. Abdool will be taking over your case." She looked to the other officer for a nod as she gathered a medical kit and phaser for the away mission.

Re: USS Mongoose - Medical Bay

Abdool rose from her seat and headed in the direction of the Medical bay when she caught sight of Svensson's back as the woman moved down the hallway and headed in the direction of the Transporter Room. She slowed her pace and gave a small shrug of her shoulders when the young blonde disappeared around the corner. 'Duty calls ...'  she thought.

Abdool walked into the Medical Bay and took a quick look around - it was an ingrained habit she'd picked u as a younger intern when she'd been tasked with the upkeep of medical stocks. A quick scan of the room showed that nothing needed immediate attention and her shoulders loosened slightly.

She turned her attention to the Ferengi Councillor and picked up the small datapadd that was close by the alien's bedside. A furrow appeared on her brow, one that darkened further as she read further into the report. She looked up from the device and to the Ferengi with a discerning look. "Afternoon, Councillor ... heard you've had a bit of an ... 'experience'. Why don't you tell me all you've gone through, and we'll see where we need to go from there, hmm?"

Re: USS Mongoose - Medical Bay

No, no roll is needed to understand the condition. You do need to roll to determine the cause of it. It's not known to be an infectious disease, but it could conceivably be a mutated virus... either natural or engineered. Also, it might only target Ferengi.

The two other possibilities is it could be caused by radiation that affects the neurons or it could be a chemical that does the same thing.

Depending on the cause, it might have different treatment, and even if the neurons are unscrambled, without knowing the cause it could reoccur.

"Of course, Commander," Jillian responds.

She'd already viewed what little data on the alien ship had been garnered from the sensors. True scans hadn't been made yet; the Mongoose was still too far away.

She'd been more fascinated by the star system detected.

"Do you really think there might be survivors over there?"

“Always bring along a second story guy, because you never know when you might run across some Johnny money bags too stupid to lock the front door.  That’s what my uncle always said, either when he took me wit him to the racetracks or dropped me off at preschool.”

"That could get rather crowded," Jillian commented with a little laugh.

"Engineer, of course. Someone has to unlock the door. What about Science? Should we ask Eclipse to join us?"

"She might even recognize the ship as from her universe."
