Shortly after the announcement walks in Dypec, his back is straight with his arms behind his back as he moves into the room and takes in his surroundings, all here were commanders, and most were not dealing in formal protocol. He took note and took standing space near the ready room desk. Once there he gave a nod to those in the room and addressed them formally.

"Commanders. Admiral." Then silently he awaits further orders.

USS Mongoose - Captain's Ready Room

The captain had been reviewing the details of several reports about ship readiness, and didn't like what he was seeing. They were supposed to get three days before they were activated, but with this incident, there was a real likelihood they would be called in early. Their crew was not even fully arrived yet, as they still didn't have a ships counseler.

That's when the message went off calling all the senior officers to the ready room. That was another thing they needed to do, he needed to take formal command.

He needed to give others the time to get there, so standing he checked his uniform in the mirror and adjusted it to appear correct. Then he exited his office, walked across the bridge and entered the ready room.

Entering he walked over to the Admiral and spoke softly.

USS Mongoose - Captain's Ready Room

Technically, he hadn't been assigned to the Mongoose yet, not until the sudden activation orders had been released. He knew he was going to be added to the ship's crew, of course, barring some radical reason for a change, such as the ship blowing up!

But, the rumors of the ship being sent into the Expanse had been circulating for months. It was like Starfleet had been waiting for the other shoe to drop, though he had no idea what exactly that meant. It was if they were waiting for something... something to happen... or maybe just something not to happen.

Was the attack on the USS Catspaw the even that finally pulled the trigger?

He'd been studying the schematics of the ship, paying particular attention to all the refits that were going on. He was intrigued by the new sensor pod.

He hurried to the Captain's Ready Room and tried to slip unobtrusively into a chair. He had yet to meet Captain th'Valla, but he nodded in acknowledgement to him.

"That would be Lieutenant Douglas Kincaid, your new Chief of Operations," the Admiral replied to Anthar.

Finally, when Captain th'Valla indicated that everyone was present who should be there, she stood up.

"I, Admiral Kandalyn Savengriff, Commander of Starbase Narendra, do hereby officially transfer command of the USS Mongoose, NCC-62043-A, to Captain Anthar th'Valla, transfer to take place immediately on this stardate, 78003.12."

She paused then to see if the Captain wanted to say anything before continuing.

"As most of you are probably aware of already, the USS Catspaw was attacked by a Klingon ship that was escorting it to Starbase Narendra. On board was Commander T'Shran, being transported to here to take the Executive Officer position on the Mongoose."

"At the moment, this situation is being investigated through diplomatic channels."

"However, as it ties in with the Mongoose's mission, I've accelerated her launch date by a few days."

"The official mission is to explore the Shackleton Expanse. You will proceed along the edge toward the Core to test out the new sensor pod."

"There have been reports of ghost images appearing on ship's sensors when they neared the Expanse, so you'll be trying to find any of these ghosts. You should proceed for at least two parsecs, or until the Captain determines that no further information can be gained, before turning into the Expanse."

"As this is in the direction of where the Catspaw was destroyed, you'll also be looking for further evidence to confirm that."

As the Captain was announced for the Mongoose he gave a small nod and continued his stoic stance, giving away no emotion or clue to what he thought of the situation as it unfolded. Personally he felt that the information should be shared now, the Ensign Vulcan should have kept quiet, he was not even to be at this meeting yet he came anyways and made his voice heard before called to do so. he took note of this and also the looks he had received by one of the other officers.

He also took note that he should take time to chat with the young Ensign at a later time if he had the chance before he ended up in corrective action for being at a Senior Officers Meeting.

I can always demand your transfer, Ensign. Because you are seriously close to insubordination, unless the admiral says that the fact that I know what happened on that runabout first hand means you can not tell me what every Blast Aimed at the Ship I was commanding is something I do not deserve to know, you had best be making a full report now. The captain sat there and listened and tried very hard to keep from smiling. This was clearly not the way senior officers normally behaved, nor was this the normal way to conduct a briefing. But then, this wasn't a normal ship launch or a normal mission. The launch was far too quick to go through the normal protocols. He'd had no time to go over his crew's files to find strengths and weaknesses, to pick and choose as was his prerogative.

He waited for a lull in the 'conversation' before standing up to make sure he had everyone's attention. Then, in a calm and deceptively friendly voice he said, " We are Starfleet officers. We should act like it. Now the, first of all, no one is dismissed."

"Secondly, Commander T'Shran, you do not get to see Ensign Stilk's report unless I say you can."

"Thirdly, I do not get to see Ensign Stilk's report unless Starfleet says I can."

"Fourth, the report has nothing personal about you in it, Commander. It is facts as gathered by the recovery team. What those facts may mean is for Starfleet Command to decide. This is clearly a political and diplomatic issue. Maybe that will become our mission, but, at the moment, it isn't ours to pursue."

"Now, getting back to the briefing..."

"I need to know what is the readiness status of each department. Also, how many crewmen do you have aboard at the moment? And can we accomplish the mission with what we have now? I'd like to get underway as soon as possible."

"My preliminary inspection of engineering shows we are within desired parameters for launch. Also, this ship seems to show a ruggedness other ships do not, repairs should be relatively easy going to perform. As for my portion of the crew? At this time engineering was quiet but I am sure they will report soon."

"Lieutenant Kincade, you report your division at eighty-three percent readiness; as Food Services is part of your divisions purview, I ask if consumable stores are fully loaded, or if they are part of the seventeen percent deficit you're reporting?  Do we need to wait upon further foodstuffs?"

In reply to Douglas Kincaid (msg # 50):

Shard raises his PADD and moves his free hand as if you make an entry on it,

"So, should I take that to mean that the bulk storage tanks for the protein and carbohydrate base components are full, Lieutenant?  As you say, replicators can produce food from pure energy, but it's a lot of energy to do it.  Using the replicators to reconfigure the molecular structure of a base compound - say, a protein paste turned into a talok steak - uses far less energy.  Not to mention that non-replicated food just tastes better."

Shark looked up from his PADD and catches Kincaid's eye,

"I hope it never happens to you, Lieutenant, but early in the Dominion War I was aboard an Andorian Cruiser that was ambushed by the Jem'Hadar.  We destroyed them, but we took damage to our cargo spaces and to engineering.  We lost all of our stored foodstuffs and had to rely on fully replicated food - which would be fine, except that our damage was so severe it was taking almost all available power to get us to Warp One and keep the hull together.  We could only divert enough power to the replicators to produce a thin soup."

"Three weeks, Lieutenant.  Three weeks with nothing to eat except lukewarm ice worm soup twice a day."

Shard lowers the PADD, "Besides, Lieutenant Kincaid, why else do you think your Division has kitchens and a cooking staff?  I'm fairly sure the Captain doesn't throw so many formal functions that we can have dozens of crewmen sitting around just waiting for him to throw a party."

Shard turned to look at the Captain,

"Of course, I don't know that for sure, Sir, it has been some time." Shard says with a grin, "Perhaps you've taken up the hedonistic habits of those smarmy Homeworld Aristocrats that there are so many tales about.  I wouldn't know about such things, myself." he finishes with obviously feigned innocence.

Silviene wasn't sure what to make of this crew. First she wasn't sure if the first officer was making fun of her or hitting on her. Now there was this security chief, he was unlike any security officer that she had ever met before. She certainly agreed that there should be more options than replicated foodstuffs but she wasn't sure about his flippant manner. His uniform was obviously not regulation either. This could certainly turn out to be an interesting voyage.

Just as suddenly, however, Shard stopped laughing - his eyes going wide as he raised a well-manicured hand up to silence his laughter.

"I am so sorry *giggle*" Shard said, trying to contain his continued amusement, "It's just ... I never really expected to hear a *snicker* statement like that in the remaining *snicker* lifetime of the Universe *giggle*"

"*ahem!*" shaking himself, Shard gains control, brings himself to a more formal posture, and bows his head - chin touching his chest and antennae stretched out towards the Ferengi.

"My apologies, Lieutenant." Shard says solemnly, keeping his head down, "My outburst was completely inappropriate. I am shamed."

Once all the Department Heads arrived in the conference room, plus a few others, the Captain started the meeting.

"As I'm sure you've all heard by now, the star system up ahead that we were intending to explore has turned out to be something... highly unusual," Captain th'Valla began.

"For lack of a better term, Stellar Cartography has dubbed it a super-system, and Lieutenant Commander Blackthorne has named it Dalmatia... because it has 101 planets."

"You heard me right: 101 planets. You'll have to ask the Lieutenant Commander why he named it Dalmatia, though."

"We're still gathering data on the system. Once we have some more details, we'll put together a plan of exploration. I'll turn the meeting over to Blackthorne now."

Re: USS Mongoose - Bridge

"Thank you, Captain," Roland begins.

"I was watching an old movie with my kids last week. It was called 101 Dalmatians so you can see why it was on my mind when this super-system showed up on our sensors. It seemed... appropriate."

"So, what we know so far is that the primary is a white sub-giant and it has an extremely large orbital track. Two of the worlds are proto-stars, which is how the outer planets are getting light and heat."

"Here's the thing... the primary shouldn't be large enough to have that kind of gravitational pull to keep all those planets in orbit, especially the outer ones."

"Our working hypothesis is that the system isn't natural because we don't know of any celestial mechanics that would account for it. We also don't know of any artificial means that could be accomplished, though. That's what we'll be exploring."

“Do we know if it’s inhabited yet?  I’ll bet a fella could get a helluva racket goin’ with over 100 planets to stash stuff on.  Sorry if I’m speakin’ outta turn, boss.”

A dog smugglin’ racket.  Start there, Julius.

Re: USS Mongoose - Bridge

Some of the Department Heads had brought along someone else from their department or a 'guest', which is what Deera Ren had done bringing along Eclipse.

Dypec had brought along Koram Val for his dual knowledge/experience as a joined Trill.

Shard had brought Pacomio along for a different perspective, as well as his recent experiences with the alien ships.

Ensign Quinn was there because she'd have to plot the hundreds of courses among all those planets.

Miranda was there because she'd be leading most if not all of the Away Teams... assuming there was anything needing hands-on exploration.

Others at the meeting were Jack Tycho (CTO) and Sergei Condratev (CMO).

Re: USS Mongoose - Bridge

"We're still too far out to get any life sign readings from the planets," Roland answered Pacomio.

"We haven't detected any warp signatures, but we have picked up some energy emissions. We just don't know what they mean yet."

"With 101 planets, I'm expecting we'll have to use the shuttles to send out several away teams at the same time."

"So, I'm notifying all of you ahead of time... to think about who you can send on three different Away Teams."

Re: USS Mongoose - Bridge

Eclipse smirked a bit at the name of the system and the explanation, as shi remembered both the original animated movie and the later live action version. Shi listened though to the others before shi spoke up.

"We could use the Ancestor instead of one shuttle, it is capable of planetary landing and in an emergency would probably be able to provide better support then a shuttle."

Re: USS Mongoose - Bridge

"That's a very good idea, Eclipse," Roland replies. "Is your ship capable of accommodating our various species?"

"In any case, we'll have to see what kind of additional data turns up. Who knows, there may be a caretaker race maintaining this system."

"As it is, I'm expecting a three-step exploration. First step would be explore the planets between the sun and the first proto-star. Second phase would be between the two proto-stars, and the third would be the planets beyond the second proto-star."

"As I said, something has to be keeping all these stars in their orbits. No simulation we've been able to come up with accounts for that."

Miranda totally resists the urge to laugh when she hears it is named Dalmatia. Although she is smiling.

"I'm fairly certain the Ancestor is capable of accommodating anyone that comes aboard as long as they don't need some really exotic atmosphere to breath in. Though the kids will probably complain about not being able to keep the artificial gravity off."
