I guess I'm still here, too.

For some reason, I was just having a hard time getting back into this game...

I don't think it was that. Maybe it's because so many players signed up and then just disappeared. Probably made me feel I was doing something wrong.

Re: Open Hailing Frequencies (OOCs)

I've been under the weather for the past two weeks with insufficient mental energy to post, and then Thursday morning the AC went out so I've been melting in 90-degree heat for the past 4 days. Tech finally got here yesterday and the AC was working fine when he left, but now it's out again! Aaargh!

Finally got the AC fixed. Took 2 weeks and a Master Tech to come out and fix the screw up the other 3 had caused.

Now I just need to find a Master Tech to fix ME!

If you find such a Tech, send him to me when you're done.

Re: Open Hailing Frequencies (OOCs)

Hi y'all, I'm Hera (TheCrankyWizard is fine too)! I just joined the campaign as Dr Maribel Hanson. I'm trying to get caught up on what's going on in the story. I've read through the Science Department thread, so I have a vague idea, but I'm obviously going to need more context. I'm probably going to eventually read through every thread (unless I'm not supposed to), but are there any recommendations as to where to start to get up to speed with what is happening right now? Lt Hanson is a physicist, so I think I'm working on quantum scans of something called Ancestor? Any help would be appreciated.

Some info about me: I'm an autistic trans woman living in the US, and I've been watching Star Trek since I was a kid. By this point I've seen TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise, all the movies, the first two seasons of Discovery, and the first season of Picard. I've been playing tabletop roleplaying games since I first encountered D&D in 2013. I'm currently in two other campaigns, one is an in-person game of Vampire: The Masquerade, and the other is a text-only game of D&D on Discord. I haven't actually played Star Trek Adventures before, but I'm excited for it. I only just recently realized that I'm far more comfortable roleplaying via text than in-person, and my D&D group recommended looking for play-by-post games, and that search led me here. I'm obviously still very new to the play-by-post format, so it might take me a little while to get the rhythm of it down.

Re: Open Hailing Frequencies (OOCs)

Probably the first thread to read is the Ancestor's Arrival, since that is where the Away Team is currently posting.

Eclipse and her ship, the Ancestor, are from another universe that has a different quantum signature. It's not the Mirror Universe, but based on the same premise--things evolved differently there.

When the Klingon research project went horribly wrong, the premise Science is working on is that it opened a rift into this other universe and that's how the Ancestor got drawn into our universe.

Generally because the quantum signatures are different, the outsider's very atomic structure starts to degrade as the new universe tries to 'assimilate' it. For reasons not yet known, this isn't happening to Eclipse and her family and ship.

At this point, not sure if Eclipse is still with us, though.

Anyway, welcome aboard!

Re: Open Hailing Frequencies (OOCs)

I made my first post!  Did I do everything correctly? I took a little creative liberty with the quantum analysis results; if that's not okay, I can change or redo it.

Re: Open Hailing Frequencies (OOCs)

So, with me joining partway through a mission, I'm guessing that the assumption is that Maribel has been on the Mongoose's crew the whole time and that she just hasn't appeared "on camera" until now. Would it also be safe to assume that she probably knows at least some of the other player characters? Is anyone interested in being pre-established friends with Maribel?

Here's her basic description: Maribel Hanson is a human woman of average height with bright, neck-length, red hair. Unless agitated by something, she typically has a friendly and helpful demeanor, though her facial expressions are often rather static. She likes to alternate between her standard uniform and the skirt variant, and likes to wear loose, comfortable clothing when off-duty. She often wears a lab coat while working, even when it's not required, and she is almost never without a tricorder and datapad handy (a Type 1 phaser as well when it's not prohibited).

She carries herself with confidence and is usually quick to help comrades with problems, but otherwise doesn't generally interact with others much, and she takes a while to become fully comfortable around new people. Once she does, however, she practically never shuts up, rambling on about her various theories and interests, often changing subjects seemingly at random.

Traits: Human, Autistic, Cleithrophobic, Cybernetic Prosthetic (Right Leg)
Homeworld: Novnaskito Station
Rank:  Lieutenant
Pronouns: She/Her
Preferred Title: Dr (unless protocol dictates otherwise)
Nickname: Mari (friends only; pronounced MAH-REE)

Her interests include physics (duh), engineering, phasers, historical fiction novels, cats, coffee, and any food that includes bread, cheese, and tomatoes. Being autistic, she is often more comfortable around Vulcans, but is willing to make friends with anyone, should they be interested and trustworthy.

Re: Open Hailing Frequencies (OOCs)

Since Maribel likes cats, she was probably fascinated by Eclipse and hir family.

They are a species of hermaphroditic humanoid felines from the Second Universe. That's a term Eclipse coined when shi first got here and realized shi was in another universe. From everyone here's point of view, Eclipse's universe was the Second Universe, so that's what shi's going with.

Shi probably spent a lot of time in Science trying to help figure out how to get back.

Re: Open Hailing Frequencies (OOCs)

I think I just spent 6 hours trying to relearn the game rules... more like figure them out. Modiphius are lousy game writers/editors. Even the index wasn't that good. When you are looking up a rule, you get 5 other references to somewhere else in the book and they don't always indicate the page number where you can find it.

I had this vague notion in the back of my head that rolling a 1 on a d20 had some significance to it, and all I could think of was that it gave you 2 Successes. But it took me an hour to wade through the rules to find where that was mentioned. Imagine my surprise when that's exactly what it turned out to be! Nice to know that my mind isn't completely gone. Just didn't remember that the caveat about not using a Focus to get that.

She's definitely familiar with Eclipse, at the very least; she's been working on figuring out how to send y'all home. To be friends would require a compatible personality and shared interests (she needs a mutually enjoyed activity to bond over). What are Eclipse's interests; what does she do during her downtime?

Re: Open Hailing Frequencies (OOCs)

Exactly. Rolling low is good. Kind of counter-intuitive to most RPGs. Of course, that's all predicated on playing D&D for 40 years! I can't help wondering if they did it that way to be sure people didn't think it was D&D derivative... or is it just European thinking?

Re: Open Hailing Frequencies (OOCs)

Personally, I really like the 2d20 rules so far. The dice mechanic is neat, and I particularly like how heavily the game prioritizes roleplay over combat, and the fact that the default character creation results in a highly competent character, instead of having the power level swing from really low to practically a demigod like D&D does.

Re: Open Hailing Frequencies (OOCs)

The drawback to any Star Trek game is that there's no room for advancement. Unless you're playing Klingons or Romulans, you can't become captain unless you kill the current captain. Backstab your way to the top!

There's not really any emphasis on everyone filling their own little niche. It wasn't that Scotty couldn't lead--he just was happy being an engineer and had no desire to sit in the captain's chair.

Re: Open Hailing Frequencies (OOCs)

Maribel's the same way. She knows she's not good at leading people, so she'd much rather be "in the trenches" doing the science. I've already decided that she wouldn't be willing to accept any promotion above Lt Commander, though she could hypothetically be talked into being Chief Science Officer if no better candidate is available. We already have a CSO, though, if I'm not mistaken.

Re: Open Hailing Frequencies (OOCs)

So apparently it was my turn to get Covid, although a weaker strain. Culminated Monday night when I fell getting out of bed because I got dizzy and my legs were so weak they couldn't support me. After friends helped me get into a chair, called an ambulance to take me to the hospital for evaluation and testing. Everything else was clear but the test came back positive for Covid. Put some fluids in me, gave me a few prescriptions for me cough, and sent me home.

According to the doctor, I have had it for a few days, so Monday was the worst of it. Getting better, but I still feel like crap and a bit unsteady on my feet.

At least this explains why I've been feeling so crappy for awhile now.

Probably should apologize for not posting an update here, but brain's been too tired to even think of doing that.

Getting better. Just slow.

There seems to be only 2 players left, so it's probably time to pull the plug on it.

Not sure STA really lends itself to RPoL, or it just may have been me.

Re: Open Hailing Frequencies (OOCs)

Still recovering but on the upswing (at least on some days).

Final notice, though:

I'll give it another week and if there isn't any renewed interest in this game, I'm going to go ahead and delete it next Sunday.
