OOC - General Out of Character thread

This is the generic thread for all things that don't belong in the game thread itself. You can also ask questions about the game here if you've forgotten a detail, need clarification, aren't sure if a spell would do the thing you want to do, etc.

I've actually managed to get through over a decade of gaming without touching an adventure module, all the campaigns I've done or been in were homebrewed.

I prefer homebrew myself, but since I wasn't planning on running this game until I saw multiple people showing interest, I've got nothing prepared. The last time I ran my own homebrew game was in 3.5, so I'd have to spend a fair amount of time converting everything to 5E, and I don't really have time for that right now.

We'll most likely be running a premade for this game since the point is to learn or become more familiar with the rules.

How would we go about multiclassing, was thinking of adding Ranger to Garrin. You said we would roleplay it before the fact?

When you gain a level, instead of becoming a Rogue 2, you would instead become a Rogue 1/Ranger 1.

There's a table on page 163 that shows you what's required to multiclass into each class. The Ranger requires you to have a 13 in both Dexterity and Wisdom (so you need to swap some ability scores around), and the table on the following page shows you what proficiencies you gain from that class. In the case of Ranger, that would be "Light armor, medium armor, shields, simple weapons, martial weapons, one skill from the class’s skill list". You also gain all of the abilities/spells of that class for the level (Favored Enemy and Natural Explorer, but no spells, in the Ranger's case).

Roleplaying the Ranger multiclass would be pretty easy, as it's very similar to Rogue to start with. Taking a background that's related to Ranger'ish things works well for that (Outlander, Hermit, Soldier, Criminal (Spy)). Multiclassing from one non-caster class into another is really fairly straightforward, as is going from caster to caster. Mixing the two types of classes together is where things can get a bit more hairy.

For starting gold, you choose one of the following:

1. You take the starting equipment given to you by your class and background (having 10-25g left over).
2. Roll for starting gold (4d4 x10 GP for a Wizard), but you don't get any of your class or background equipment.

And do note that as a Wizard, if you decide to roll for your gold, you need to spend 50g on a spellbook, and the longbow costs another 50g, so you've got 100g worth of your starting coin tied up in just those two things. Then you need either a Focus (staff is 5g) or the Component Pouch (25g) to cover your material components.

You don't need to worry about ammo, so ignore the arrows.

And there should be one (more or less) complete dwarf cleric for the party now.

Eirlen, is it wise to take an instrument generally played from a sitting position into combat? Also, is it bad that I played string instruments and never heard of one of these? I thought you just misspelled viola.

Thanks! I've found a good mix of background stuff too to tie in a druidic mentor kind of thing to. The folk hero background comes with a "fairy god mother" kind of option, but no reason it can't be a druid that was involved in the death of her past life. Final draft of the dragon(re)born!

Re: OOC - General Out of Character thread

Alright, so 5/8 of you have your character sheets completed. Two of the three are very close to being done, and the third actually is done on D&DB, we just haven't filled out the sheet here yet.

I'm going to split you into two groups tomorrow (assuming the seven servers we upgraded this weekend remain stable) and we'll get this party started. Character sheets aren't done for everyone, but I think we've got enough to get started.

As far as the adventures are concerned, I'm going to start you off in the Lost Mines of Phandelver pre-made adventure, which will take you to roughly 5th level if you manage to take it all the way to completion.

Once again, this game exists to help you learn how to play 5E D&D, or how to play D&D in general (I believe everyone here has some D&D experience, even if only of early editions). Therefor, if you have questions - ASK! We do have a couple of veteran players in this game who expressed a desire to help, so I'm not the only one who can answer your questions.

There should be an option for each language your character can speak (other than Common) in the downdown box labeled 'Insert a private line:' at the very bottom of the list.

If there is an issue with the languages listed, let the GM know to be able to change it.

Not intentionally. My business trip got extended and my coworker tore a hamstring and had to have surgery right before we launched a project that he was in charge of so I had to take over for him. We do have a number of people who have not logged in for over a week, or in some cases over a month, so we may need to combine groups.

I do have one person who just applied to the game, and two more who showed interest not too long ago, so we may combine the groups and push on as one if we have to. Or I can just NPC everyone who's missing and then have the groups meet up in Phandelver to form a new group.

The group was hired to escort a wagon of supplies to a nearby town. The dwarf who hired you, Gundren, left with a human fighter, Sildar, the night before and would meet up with you after you arrived. On the road you found two dead horses, which belonged to Gundren and Sildar, and there you were ambushed by four goblins. You followed the signs and trails, which lead you here to the cave, where it seems Gundren and Sildar were taken.

It depends upon what pace you want to change it to...  I don't want daily posts.  I could deal with every other day.  Just my two cents...

I only bring it up because I think the pace we are moving at right now is causing us to lose players. If we're down to just the folks who want it to be slow to begin with, then no problem. I don't want to keep chewing through players if we can avoid it, though.

I've got another player who will be joining shortly, as well.

This particular adventure is designed to throw you straight into the action and then give you an opportunity for RP and get-to-know-you's after this first dungeon, so feel free to let your character's personality show in your words and actions, but know that you've got an opportunity to do such things more after you clear this place out and reach the town.

Something that should be said just so you keep it in mind -

This game is here to teach you the system, or even to teach you how to play the game in the first place for those who are brand new to D&D all together.

If at any point you don't know what to do, or you don't even know what you can do, what your options are, feel free to post those questions here in the OOC. You're also free to discuss plans here before you execute those plans in the game thread.

Per the people who originally requested the game to be made, this game is intentionally set up to have a slow posting rate. The idea is 2-3 times per week, which we have certainly been slower-than for a little while now.

I'm trying to give everyone a chance to say something, but also asked about the posting rate. If things are too slow right now, I don't mind kicking it up a bit. I do not want to leave people behind though, when a slow rate was specifically requested to begin with.

As with most rolls in 5E, Initiative uses the d20. You can find your initiative bonus on your sheet, a few inches down. It's below your character stats, to the right of your HP, and abbreviated as Init:

Most characters have an initiative bonus that's the same as their Dexterity modifier. Some classes and some feats will give you a bonus to that as you gain levels, but for most it is just the Dex modifier.

Talin, I do hope you hit and kill Wolf #2, but I believe you need to roll to hit a second time to hit (since you already rolled once), and take the lower of the two rolls.
Assuming the GM doesn't rule otherwise...

The reason is that you are making a ranged spell attack while being threatened by an enemy.  Here is the rule:

quote:
Aiming a ranged attack is more difficult when a foe is next to you. When you make a ranged attack with a weapon, a spell, or some other means, you have disadvantage on the attack roll if you are within 5 feet of a hostile creature who can see you and who isn’t incapacitated. (p73)

Right now, chances are fairly good that I won't have time to do it today or tomorrow either, and then Sunday I'm traveling for Thanksgiving.

I should have a little bit of downtime next week while I'm visiting family, but I can't guarantee it. I won't be stressing about it, so be aware of that, but if we've got some down time I'll do what I can.

Quite. Like peanut butter and gasoline. (Ed: Not that Betty knows what either of those things are, but at least this time, she got the context right!)

Yeah, this should be fun. I'm happy to wait to be introduced, too bad we're mid-scene, we could get in some "meet at the pub" roleplaying in while waiting.

I've also pointed the game out to a pair of friends, one completely new, one a GM who rarely gets to play.

Also, I SWEAR I wasn't trying to imitate a certain anime character when I started this character creation process. Ultimately, the stumbling across the avatar I chose is sort of what started this whole ball of mess rolling! :D

For general 5E tactics, I will tell you that it is far better to kill off injured targets so that they can no longer attack you, than it is to spread your damage around. Of course I agree, but if there aren't any wounded targets that need picking off, our ranged attackers should focus on THEIR ranged attackers. One of the reasons I was debating whether to hang back and keep shooting or not.

Like I said, this one's going to be hard. And it's entirely possible that some of you will die, even the new folks who literally just joined us. Some of your rolls have been terrible, and a lot of mine have been pretty amazing.

Everyone, feel free to talk/RP in the game thread, and make some Medicine checks to stabilize your fallen comrades. Unless you go chasing down the Redbrands right now, it should be a little while before we have another encounter.

Now would be a good time to use the Help action (it's like Aid Another if you're familiar with 3E/Pathfinder).

quote:
Help
You can lend your aid to another creature in the completion of a task. When you take the Help action, the creature you aid gains advantage on the next ability check it makes to perform the task you are helping with, provided that it makes the check before the start of your next turn.

Alternatively, you can aid a friendly creature in attacking a creature within 5 feet of you. You feint, distract the target, or in some other way team up to make your ally’s Attack more effective. If your ally attacks the target before your next turn, the first Attack roll is made with advantage.

Re: OOC - General Out of Character thread

Hope the DM doesn't mind me doing this.

Advantage and Disadvantage: in both cases, roll 1d20 twice (or two d20's). If you have advantage, take the higher number. If you have disadvantage, take the lower number.

If you have advantage from one source and disadvantage from another, they cancel out and you just roll 1d20 as normal.

Using the RPOL die roller, set up the die roller to roll 2d20 (plus or minus modifiers). Then below that, in the General options, select "Drop Lowest" and put a 1 in the next box if you have Advantage. Select "Drop Highest" and put a 1 in the text box if you have Disadvantage. Then the die roller takes care of it for you.

10:14, Today: Morgan Ironwolf rolled 15 using 2d20+4, dropping the lowest dice only with rolls of 11,11.  Example Advantage roll (with die rolls recorded).

10:14, Today: Morgan Ironwolf rolled 19 using 2d20+4, dropping the highest dice only with rolls of 17,15.  Example Disadvantage roll (with die rolls recorded).

10:14, Today: Morgan Ironwolf rolled 12 using 2d20+4, dropping the highest dice only.  Example Disadvantage roll.

10:13, Today: Morgan Ironwolf rolled 13 using 2d20+4, dropping the lowest dice only.  Example Advantage roll.

Re: OOC - General Out of Character thread

It's a busy weekend. My wife and I are regional coordinators for high school exchange, over a large portion of central/north Texas. Our first student for the year just arrived today and we've got a meeting with host parents this afternoon to help them get prepared for everything.

Things are going to be crazy for me for the next months, so you may want to anticipate a little bit a slow down for the next while. Probably more like the game's original intention of 2-3 posts from me per week.

I'm going to try for a post later tonight, or maybe tomorrow afternoon if we have another family this week like we did last week, who stays over for an extra 5 hours to talk.

Re: OOC - General Out of Character thread

You can use a Short Rest within the shrine to recover hit points if you like.

You each have a number of Hit Dice equal to your level. The die is the same as whatever you roll for hp for your class: d10 for fighters, d8 for warlocks, d12 for barbs, and so on.

You can spend hit dice during a Rest to heal yourself an amount equal to what you roll, plus your Constitution modifier. You can spend them one at a time, seeing what you roll on the first on before you roll the second, and so on.

If you take Sister G up on her offer to rest inside the temple, roll 1d6 and 1d10. If the d10 is higher than the d6, you heal for an extra 8 HP. If the dice are the same, you heal back to full HP no matter what you rolled on the hit die, and don't need to spend any of your hit dice to do it.

When you gain a level, you'll get access to your new spells and hit points during any rest. You won't regain what you've lost/spent, but you will gain the new things. So you'll have another 1st level spell slot available right now, and can have the new spell(s) learned/prepared.

Re: OOC - General Out of Character thread

DM - can we get an estimate of timing when the reboot of the game will occur? Or a short explanation of the game plan. I'm not looking for personal info, just an idea of your plans for the game moving forward.

In more than 10 years on this site, I've found the games that sustain are the ones that have at least one person posting every day.

Not a criticism - I've gone through periods as a DM where I've had too much real life going on. I'd just like a time frame when this game's going to go live again.

Thx.

Re: OOC - General Out of Character thread

Obviously, things changed a little bit. Not too long after the last update here, I lost my job and devoted all of my spare time to finding a new job. I did find a new job in early/mid Feb and things are going really good there. The problem is, I have to be up at 4 AM to beat the Dallas traffic, get off at 4, home around 5:00, and then I have a few hours to do dinner, shopping, spending time with the family, and then to bed again before I start the cycle all over again.

So, I could bring the game back, but only post on those nights that I actually have a little free time, or give up on trying to maintain maps and post on my phone during lunches/breaks. With the horrible traffic coming home, I can't always predict when I'll have time to post at night and when I won't.

It's been a long break, so you may all be willing to give this one up all together anyway.

Time for honest thoughts and feels, guys. Let me know what you think.

Re: OOC - General Out of Character thread

In reply to Maric Arumae (msg # 261):

You can compare it to the Circumstance Bonus in 3.5E, which was most often +2 or -2. In some cases you would have an advantage to succeed and in others you would not. One thing they tried to accomplish in 4E and 5E was to get away from everything being about the numbers. In 3.5 it mattered more what magic items you had and which feats you chose than which race/class/PrC you were playing.

To fix that, they overcompensated in 4E and made the game feel like a pen and paper video game. In 5E they found a much better balance for it.

So the question was asked; how to we give players a bonus in advantageous circumstances and a penalty in disadvantageous circumstances, without making it all about the numbers game again? The answer was to give them a second roll of the dice. On average it works out to about +5/-5, which in 3.5 would have been a 25% change. With hard caps on ability scores and fewer crazy magic items, in 5E it actually works out being closer to a 50% shift in success chance.

You can also somewhat compare it to confirming critical hits. A natural 20 gave you a chance to crit, you had to roll a secondd d20 and still score a hit on that roll in order to get the bonus damage. You think you know the outcome after the first roll, but let's roll again to see if you're right.

Death saves: I assume the primary attribute's modifier is what is used for death saves? In my case, that would be wisdom. In other words d20 + ability modifier, correct?

Also, how does one go about spending Hit Dice to regain hit points? Just roll, add constitution modifier (if there is one), and call it a day?

Re: OOC - General Out of Character thread

Death Saves have no modifier at all. It's just a straight d20 roll, 10+ is success, 1-9 is a fail, trying to get 3 successes before 3 fails. A natural 20 heals you back to 1 HP.

You spend hit dice (you have one per character level) whenever you take a short or long rest. Each die restores the amount rolled, plus Con. Your hit dice are per class, so if a fighter multi classes into wizard, he has 1d10 and 1d6 for his dice, and he chooses which he wants to roll.

You regain half your level worth of hit dice when you take a long rest. You choose which dice are recovered if you have different dice because of multiclassing. You also heal to full HP after the long rest, so spending dice during a long rest is done to heal in case of an attack mid-rest.

I stopped trying to DM 5E a little over a year ago, but one of my big challenges was trying to remember all the monster abilities/powers and what they do. I don't think it would be an issue in play by post, since I have all the time I want to look at. In face to face play, I was often forgetting to have monsters use their special powers.

Another thing was that I very early on ditched the CR/XP system and went back to old school "small amount of XP for combat, lots of XP for treasure" method. I was never a big fan of the CR/EL system of 3E, and found that 5E didn't seem to have improved upon it. It was too much effort to create bespoke, artisanal monster encounters tailored to the party.

So it's less a problem understanding what to do (I've been DMing for 35 years now), just the way 5E does it isn't as intuitive for me.

I have to admit, Morgan, most of my games on RPol are 1st edition or Original D&D. I do play a 3.5 face to face game that's been going on since 2009. The DM is great, created his own campaign that rivals anything that TSR/Wizards/Hasbro has created.

I do like 5e though, at least the small amount that I've played of it. Just want to learn more.

I was hoping to have time tonight. I'm going to have to work late, 1-3 hours, so that part sucks. Tomorrow looks like a good day, too. I can't get overtime at the moment, so extra hours I put in today I have to take off tomorrow by leaving early, which opens up the afternoon.

You know, Maric, Halflings can ride Dire Wolves. With Betty attacking while riding you, you'll trigger your Pack bonuses while attacking... ;)

Glad to be rolling the bones with y'all. Happy Memorial day coming up. Thank you, if you served. I did 4 years in the Navy - no thanks necessary as I got a lot more out of them than they got out of me - I was a good sailor, two cruises to the Persian Gulf, but I was focused on finishing my college degree, and didn't look at it as a career opportunity. It was a decision I didn't regret, but I recommend service to any young person who will listen.

Huzzah to a surprise round. That was fun. More of that please!

Re: OOC - General Out of Character thread

If your wolf form loses all of its HP, you revert to your own form with the same HP you had before you shifted. "Dying" in an animal form is not a big deal unless it's enough damage to finish off that form plus kill your real form, you just lose the form an turn back into yourself. If something does knock you out of your wolf form, but you're still alive and well in your natural form, you can shift back into a wolf again and gain a full set of wolf HP.

You can sacrifice your spell slots to heal yourself while in an animal form as well. Each spell level restores 1d8 HP.

Re: OOC - General Out of Character thread

For example, if you have 30/30 HP, then you shift into a form that has 34 HP.

You take 30 damage, dropping you to 4/34. Still an animal.
You take 6 more damage, destroying from animal form. The extra 2 damage roll over to your actual hp, dropping you to 28/30.
If you then shift to another form, you retain your 28/30 for personal, but now you have a fresh 34/34 for the animal form.

To clarify, you can't tell exactly where the wizard is, but you know the general area well enough to continue your pursuit. His speed is faster than Maric's right now, so catching him won't be easy and he'll get an even larger lead on the rest of the party with each passing round.

It may be possible for you to catch him, just be aware that it's going to be 2v1 when you do while the rest of the party spends time moving and dashing to catch up.

One turn is 10 minutes, right? I'm thinking that Maric wants to at least try to find some tracks or scent some spoor, so a minimum of 10 minutes, perhaps fifteen, but not much more than that. Y'alls thoughts?

I think it will be impossible to catch him, unless his magic wears off soon (no idea how long the effect will last), but if Maric can keep tracking him, that would be best.

Nope, you can take your normal actions with no problem. Reactions are things like Opportunity Attacks, where if he had moved out of your range you normally would get a free extra attack on him, but he didn't do anything that would provoke a Reaction so it's not terribly important this round.

He cast the Shield spell as a Reaction, giving him an extra +5 AC when you made your attacks last round.

You're not worthless as a warlock, you've just not been given many opportunities to shine, and the dice roller kind of hates you.

Warlocks can be a lot of fun, but they can also be insanely boring. Often the warlock doesn't truly come into its own until you've gained a few more levels and your patron can play more of an active role in the overall narrative and your personal story. Until then, life is dull.

Lucky for you, the first roll was a 20, which means you come back at 1 HP and can act on your turn. So go ahead and post an action for me.

Shapeshifting doesn't provide any healing, you just go back to however many HP you had before you shifted into an animal form. Taking on a new animal form gives you full HP for that form, so a new wolf form has full wolf HP, but going back to your natural form you revert to whatever you had beforehand.

Re: OOC - General Out of Character thread

Short Rests allow you to spend your hit dice to heal, so you roll whatever your HD is, add your Con bonus, and you regain that many HP. You do that for however many HD you feel like spending, and you can roll 1, decide to spend another, roll that, decide to spend more, etc. So you don't have to decide ahead of time how many HD you're going to spend and then possibly get screwed with low rolls. You don't regain any HP by default, you have to spend the HD.

A Long Rest restores all HP without needing to spend any hit dice, and gives you half of your level worth of HD back.

Yes and no.

Anyone can attune to the staff to use it as a weapon (it counts as magical, but doesn't give any attak or damage bonus), and also benefit from the +1 AC that it gives to you while holding it. However, in order to cast either of the spells that it has charges for (Mage Armor and Shield), you have to have those spells on your class spell list, which a Warlock does not.

The mercenaries seemed to be considering the words of Morgan and Beatrice, when suddenly the earth shook and a thunderous, rolling BOOM! burst forth from Maric. Windows and doors rattled in nearby buildings, and one window in the building directly behind the Redbrands shattered as shards flew inward from the impact.

And with that, it's time for the rest of you to roll initiative as well.

Maric, roll your Thunderwave damage. Three of them passed their saves, one failed

Dammit, Maric, now we'll NEVER know if Betty's intimidate would have cowed them! :P

Re: OOC - General Out of Character thread

It looks like I forgot to handle your short rest, so go ahead and spend your hit dice for healing if you want.

Short Rests do not restore any HP by default, you instead spend your hit dice. Apparently the character sheets I set you all up with doesn't have hit dice listed, which is rather unhelpful. However, you gain a hit die every time your character levels. You got level 3 after your short rest, so you actually only have the 2 hit dice available for healing.

Your hit die is the same thing you roll to get your HP, it's different for each class. Talin/Maric both have d8, Morgan a d10, and Beatrice a d12. You can roll them one at a time so you know where you sit, then decide if you want to use the other one or not. You can only use 1 hit die, per level, each day. So sometimes it's good not to blow them all at once or you may find yourself with no way to heal except a Long Rest.

When you roll the hit die to heal, you'll roll whichever die you have (listed above) and then add your Constitution modifier to, that's how much healing you receive. As we left it, only Beatrice was really in need of healing.

Heh, I'm in a couple of games where the DM rolls all the dice for everyone. It was really weird and almost stopped me from applying to either of those game (the second was a player in the first), but they actually turned out to be two of my favorite games I've ever had on this site, and I've been here for nearly 20 years.

The first game shut down a couple of years ago when the DM had some real life stuff happening, but the second is still going strong.

Sorry for the delay, tonight was game night, part 2.

Psynister:
The man then walked toward your group, removing his chain gauntlets and tucking them into his belt as he drew near. "Please excuse that incident; the young ones are always a bit fiery, and rarely any good at using their heads." As he gets about 20 feet away, he gets a clear sight of the glass staff lying at Betty's feet. "At least he was telling the truth, it seems. You did kill the wizard, I assume?"

Someone needs to step in as their action to turn Betty off, otherwise her action (since she's Raging and newly Frenzied) she's going to continue to see these Redbrands as more threats and attack them. If she goes a round w/o attacking (like to listen to reason), she'll drop out of both Rage and Frenzy, but be Exhausted. So I'll leave it up to you all. Do you want to continue releasing the blender, or ...?

Hey, everyone. I stumbled across an idea while trying to nap this morning. I'd like to create and run an "open-world" D&D game. I'd run it across multiple groups, but I'd like to start it on RPOL to give me somewhere concrete to keep notes, etc. I'd love you all to "playtest" it with me!

The idea is that it's "Bright"-esque (if you haven't seen that, I'll explain in a moment), but 10 - 15 years into the future of that movie. Pre-Cyberpunk, if you will. Our world (or something close to it), but basically, D&D has moved into 202X.

Any interest?

I should have been more clear in the post, but the longer term rot smell is one that only Maric was able to detect. It's a stronger scent, but not as sharp, so the other scents of death nearby would actually cover that scent for the less complicated noses in the room.

The reason why you didn't detect it before is mostly due to the fact that you didn't actually come to this specific part of the room until you were in a mad dash to catch Glasstaff, so even if you had noticed it, it wouldn't have registered as more than a tiny distraction while you were giving chase.

The only sign you've seen of the attackers is the death they left in their wake. You could go back through the parts of the hideout that you previously explored if you'd like. Maric was able to determine that the prisoners were killed 3-6 hours ago, so if this was the clean-up crew, then they're likely gone. The choice is yours.

Hi folks. I'm back. I am sorry if i seemed to disappear. Went to FL to visit me mum and other family. She's almost 80, so I try to get down that way as often as possible.

That said, I'm eager to get this thing going again.

You can get a 20% discount on anything that can be bought here. You can spend up to 15g on fancy clothes, so however fancy you're looking for, knock 20% off of that. As long as there are no super special materials that aren't available, it should be ready for you by the time you return from Thundertree.

Re: OOC - General Out of Character thread

Armor of Agathys is still up. You get 10 THP because your spells are 2nd level now that your character is 3rd level (Warlock spells automatically level up alongside your character). So at level 2 it gives you 10 Temporary HP and deals 10 Cold damage when an enemy hits you. You took 3 damage from one, so you still have 7 THP left and it will continue dealing 10 Cold damage as long as you have even 1 THP left on it.

So that you're aware of what you're getting into - the dragon is a CR 8 challenge, so it is deadly. I have had the dragon killed by a party of only 3 PC's that were level 3, so you can kill him, and can drive him away. Some of you will almost certainly be knocked out, and potentially killed.

Green dragons are intelligent, and a real threat, so it will be using intelligent tactics. So if you're going after him, which you absolutely can do, do not hold back and do not expect me to do so either.

He's an optional quest, you don't have to face him at all. If you want a fight you can be proud of winning though, of all the encounters in this adventure - this is that encounter.

You haven't alerted anyone else to your presence yet, so you can chance a rest. If you do a short rest in the castle you won't even have to worry about a random encounter. Long rest, you certainly have a chance of random encounter, with a higher chance inside the castle than out.

Ah, the dice! In an old school (BX) game I'm playing in, we ran into a room with 5 berserkers. Shouldn't have been too much of a problem even though we're level 1, but they kept hitting our plate & shield clad fighters (and the MU who knocked on the door). I'm also playing an MU, and cast sleep. It instantly puts 2d8 hit dice of monsters to sleep in that edition, no saving throw.

I roll a 3. And instead of the normal 1 hit die berserkers, these guys are apparently 2 hit dice. So only one goes to sleep. We're about to get a TPK. :D

You have line of sight on the bugbear for a ranged attack, or you could move up to the open spot in front of the door to get a melee attack on the hobgoblin. You could move in to attack the drow as well, but you would have to take a free attack from the hobgoblin to do it.

Re: OOC - General Out of Character thread

I HATE to delay further (especially after I delayed all day due to gaming, etc), BUT: When I read Maric's post (msg 310), he stated he was at the "top of the map, North". Which would, I thought, put him at the open space just north of the "cabinet" and attacking and killing Goblins to the lower left diagonal square, and the direct right adjacent square. With those two dead, Betty proceeded into the room "behind Bearic" (msg 312) and attacked the 3rd Goblin (the one directly above the Grick, from my reckoning) from atop the cabinet (I wasn't sure what to call it, so I didn't mention it directly in my post, that's my bad). She still could have multiple attacks, but from the way I'm reading Maric's post and the way I intended mine, the two of them would be in the main room together, and she COULDN'T be surrounded by goblins at all.

Thoughts, advice, insight?

-Ken

Re: OOC - General Out of Character thread

Maric attacked the 2 that had been right beside the door since those were the ones closest to him. I showed where everyone was on the map before you posted actions. If he were to fight the ones at the literal top of the map, he'd have taken 2 opportunity attacks moving through the room to get to them, and you'd have taken three opportunity attacks yourself to get there to hit the one you're referring to, and you still would have ended up in the same situation since you'd have been the nearest target for all but maybe one of the goblins. If Maric had gone into the room and attacked something other than the 2 goblins nearest to him, some of them might have gone after him instead of you.

The reason you're completely surrounded is because the grick grabbed you from a distance and pulled you closer to him for the beak attack. Technically, you're in the same square as the grick and the goblin to your left is in the square your character portrait is in, sandwiched between the grick and the goblin. This view just represents relative positioning better.

I think it would help to have multiple enemies numbered, additionally, I would not have had Betty charge into the room alone.

But, I'll deal with the situation as-is, tomorrow (later today) after I get some sleep! All's good in the goblin 'hood!

@Betty - unfortunately, I think only the Rogue Thief archetype's Fast Hands ability would allow you to attack and then take a potion as a bonus action.

Anyway, here's hoping the DM's die rolls are just as bad as Maric's and mine this round. Or this may be the end of the line. :D

Since this game is designed to teach 5E rules, we'll have to stick to them. You can draw the potion as a free action, but it takes a full Action to drink it. Not to mention the free hand to do so.

Re: OOC - General Out of Character thread

Maric Arumae:
Not to add confusion to all of this, but my intent was to kill goblins in lieu of trying to kill the owlbear and grick, which we were successful at.

I think where we got bound up was the grick actually caused some damage to Betty while Bearic was fighting the last remnants of the goblins. Ultimately Betty survived...barely but we might want to strategize a bit more, if we have an opportunity to talk things over before engaging with the enemy. That's my two cents.

Oh, and some nice roleplaying with Betty, Morgan and Maric...Please don't go all Conan on me, though.

Part of that was on me. I had Betty charge in because I assumed Maric had moved somewhere he hadn't. I think numbering the monsters going forward will help alleviate most of the assumptions.

But, to be fair, Betty is a typical hot-headed Barbarian, so maybe this encounter will temper her anger. Not to mention what it's going to do to her poor emotions!

Betty will (most likely) continue to stay with the group. We can either further explore the interactions in roleplaying, or we can skip ahead (TV style) to the next episode where the tensions may still be strong between them all and the perhaps explore things in "flashback" style.

I'm all for what's preferred by the rest of the group and the DM.

My dog got sprayed by a skunk tonight. I didn't realize it had happened, I just knew she had barked at something after I let her out. When she came in, she dove into the carpet to wipe it off, then jumped up onto the couch to wipe it off there too. Now my entire house smells absolutely horrendous, and the smell is a trigger for both my wife's post-covid condition and my own, so the smell is amplified. I may be going to a hotel tonight if I can't get through it, but I get to spend tomorrow trying to deskunk my house. We're going through every home remedy Google has to offer right now, to do what we can tonight, but relief can't come soon enough.

I may be a bit tied up tomorrow for posting, trying to take care of this smell.

You have to have the spell on your class list to cast it. If it's a level of spell that you can already cast, then you can do so as though you had just cast it yourself, consuming the scroll instead of a spell slot. If it's a spell that's higher than what your character has access to, then you have to make an ability check to see if it succeeds or fails.
