[House Rules] Magic-User Variants: The Secret Orders

Secret Orders (Specialists)
Basically a retrofit of the 2nd edition specialists, including the Illusionist. They start with Read Magic and one spell that MUST be in their specialty. Like standard MU's they start with Read Magic in their spellbooks. They can also start with a Specialist spell from another edition of D&D/OSR that's in their specialty, or they have a modified version of a standard spell that ties into their specialty (for instance a version of Magic Missile that spits out screaming skulls). They must also pick a type of magic that they CANNOT learn (though any Order can learn Divination). They get +1 on rolls (to hit, damage, saving throws) for spells in their Domain, and -1 for spells outside their domain. They also learn a secret code specific to their Order.

Examples in this gameworld:

[What follows would only be known to MUs, clerics, and possibly the nobility.]

The Imogenes
Masters of tricking the Eye and the Mind. It's said they wear turquoise robes, but if you saw one dressed like that then you'd know there was illusions involved, so they'd always go in disguise, right? Hey, where's my backpack?

The Callers Beyond
An Order of Conjurers and Summoners who are blamed for unleashing horrible things in the world long ago, and are now hated even more than the Necromancers. Even their Apprentice spell is considered too dangerous for outsiders to possess.

The Guardians of the Gate
A Lawful Order of Necromancers that recognize Undeath as a dangerous force that must be contained at all costs. They are known by their black robes and vulture-beaked masks. They are the only Order of their kind still tolerated on the Continent. There were other Necromantic Orders but they were banned by the Empire long ago...

The Spellbreakers
Grey robed Abjurists, masters of dismantling dweomers and banishing the Summoned. Some regions that shun the Unified Faith turn to them for magical support instead of the clerics, but unlike other Orders they incur the wrath of other spellcasters.

The Sagecrafters
Seekers of Knowledge through Divination. They withdrew from society a few years before the Empire fell, which is generally considered a Bad Sign.
