Re: The Great Herding Of Cats (Players) and the GMs Journey.
I'm open to suggestions. Has anyone used a system for that in another game here on rpol or similar play-by-post?
So far it was just sniping by stealth so the goblin's really couldn't fight back, but now that there's melee I guess we should...roll initiative?
Alrighty, suggestions:
1) Pick a ruleset and stick with it. For example, I`m using the Rules Cyclopedia for my game experience and frankly ignoring all the houserules because I don`t have the bandwidth to study them and-or interest in them. As DM, you`re in charge, just tell us what we`re using.
2) Yes indeed, initiative time
For keeping track you can just make a simple list that you update at the bottom of each and every DM post. Unless
information is a total secret, don`t use private lines or otherwise hide things because people will get confused and it takes more time in play-by-post to explain things than anything else.
Example (using Orange for OOC text, and contrast colours to highlight important things)
Wrangle at the Winery, Round 1
Game Map: insert link to googledoc (or whatever) here
Initiative Result: Party goes first, then goblins
Post actions in format: move here, attack this enemy, dice rolls posted here
Already gone: Player 1, Player 5, Player 2 (etc)
Still to go: Players 3, 4, 6, 7 (etc)
Enemy status: 3 goblin spearmen (G1, G2, G3) in front of doors (put map coords here if using grid). None wounded, look tough. Spear and shield.
Enemy status: some kind of ruckus on the roof, results given with Wisdom checks (already done)
Effects and Notes: Stormbinder is in the stocks (coords here) and can`t act yet
Effects and Notes: These squares are impassable (coords here). To climb onto the roof, move adjacent and make a such and such check and it costs such and such movement so it may take multiple rounds etc
Posting Deadline: players need to post their actions by such and such a time or they dither and lose their action for the round (not always needed but can be handy sometimes to keep the ball rolling)
Naturally as DM you can`t think of everything right away, but as questions get asked and you make new rulings, just add them to the list. Don`t worry if the list gets long, it`s part of the game during combat. The last thing you want is people asking the same questions 10 times because the answer scrolled up a few posts in the thread!
