Re: Track and Field Work (June 12, 1967)

In reply to Jan Vrabec (msg # 154):

Apart from a few questions that Jan was very easily able to answer just from general knowledge, the matter did indeed die out and the locker gradually cleared out as those present headed out to the athletics track.

Jan would be able, if he was careful, to make his way out of the place and head to his next pickup destination.

Which happened to be a wholesale meat market.

No chancing it, he decided to take the safe approach and take all care he could to check the locker, retrieve whatever was inside, hopefully not a javelin, and get out of here ASAP. He dreaded to think what would he do at the meat market.

In reply to Jan Vrabec (msg # 156):

There was what appeared to be a canister of photograph film inside the locker, which could easily fit in a pocket. Opening the cannister would probably not be a good idea as the film was likely undeveloped.

OOC: Luck roll please.

In reply to Jan Vrabec (msg # 158):

As he collected the film, he had a firm voice in Spanish behind him.

He turned to see a burly man dressed in a security guard uniform, a large torch in his right hand, held in a manner that suggested he could use it as a club if required. The man did not look impressed in the slightest.

Jan pockets what he was getting and then starts talking to the man, in Czech, about the weather. He tried to sound confused, which hopefully would convey a sense of confusion on his side, confuse whoever had just arrived and give him a better chance to react if he felt things were going pear shaped. He also took a cursory look to see if anyone was observing the scene.

In reply to Jan Vrabec (msg # 162):

The guard looked slightly confused. He was still angry, but slightly less so.

He pointed towards the exit of the changing room with an extended index finger, making clear that Jan should vacate the changing room pretty quickly. In the middle distance, the sound of a gunshot could be heard, almost certainly a starting pistol. It was followed by the sound of a energetic crowd cheering on runner.

Jan takes the hint, thanking whatever gods there still are in the universe and leaves ASAP, quickly heading out from there and into the next drop location. This was becoming quite the day for narrow escapes, he was using all of his luck really quickly.

Might be an idea, to drop things with the boss before doing anything further. She's bound to be impressed. Or not.

Jan conducted the rest of his drops without any further incident and returned to the hotel. Katya was waiting for him in the lobby, dressed in smart white business clothing. It was fairly empty at this time of day, but it would probably get busier later.

"Did you find anything in the boxes?" she asked quietly. "If you did, kiss me and drop it into my pocket."

Not one to miss an opportunity, and without further ado, Jan goes for a real smacker as he drops the box in her pocket.

Katya let him kiss her for a bit and then withdrew from the embrace.

"Right, I'll go put this in the safe. We've got a couple of hours for dinner, so what do you want to do until then? Something that fits into our cover, I'd say."

In reply to Jan Vrabec (msg # 170):

"Well, you're buying in that case. I'll have a vodka martini. Stirred, not shaken."

She let Jan take her arm and lead her towards the bar, where a moustachioed bartender asked for their orders. Once they were paid for and given, Katya led Jan to a table near the back of the room.

"I've got a message from Moscow. We need to head north in a couple of days to collect a package at the US border."

Re: Track and Field Work (June 12, 1967)

Jan mulled this one for a while. This was all fine and dandy but... Moscow was one thing, Prague the other. He would hate to go back to Prague and find he was considered a dissident. He was pretty certain the KGB would not jump to his defence.

'Fine. Has Prague been notified of my actions?...'

In reply to Jan Vrabec (msg # 172):

Katya shrugged and gave Jan a look that suggested he had made a mistake in asking the question in the first place. "Why would I know? That's not my responsibility. Do you want to send them a postcard?"

Outside, the sky was beginning to darken. It looked like heavy rain was coming their way.

Jan was a bit miffed, to say the least, with her attitude. 'You dragged me here. If you are not notifying my superiors, then I need to do it. You may take a cavalier attitude with your superiors, I try to avoid that. So, yes, I'll send them a postcard.'

"Well, you'd better do it quickly, as we'll be leaving in the morning," Katya replied. "I would remind you that anything sent to Czechoslovakia stands a decent chance of being steamed open and read by the Federal Security Directorate. Probably not one of the nicest domestic intelligence agencies.

OOC: Definitely not; they would 'disappear' and torture thousands of people in the Mexican Dirty War against various left-wing groups.

Their drinks arrived. Katya had ordered some local rum, which she took a sip of. "Not bad really. I might see if I get some home in the diplomatic bag."

OOC - I'm taking a wild guess here that these guys all had keywords, etc that would look innocuous and that they could send as a message. If so, that's what he does, on a nice postcard with a cactus. If possible, he would also let them know the KGB is behind all of this.

Let's give this a bash then.

Dear Uncle Felix,

Hope you enjoy this postcard from sunny Mexico! I'm quite eager to get back but my companion insists we must make the most of it so, she's the boss, we still have some travel to do in here.

Jan.
