Re: In The Forest of Arden...
Ariadne got a glimpse of the female soldier as she leaned out from her hiding place. She was within "axe throwing range", which is a phrase Ariadne would NEVER have thought she'd be using so often, but she was also close enough to hit with her her battle axe. She'd gotten one soldier throwing an axe, perhaps it was time to try something new?
It was a risk, charging someone who had a ranged weapon, but she remembered something that Jeremy, the stunt coordinator of her movies Vectortpwn and Madame Mink, Ariadne's sort of successful superhero movies, once told her. It was called The Reactionary Gap.
When two combatants squared off, and one had a gun, or other ranged weapon, that one usually had a huge advantage. However, there was normally a certain distance between them. If the distance was small, say 3 to 5 meters, an unarmed but athletic person could charge the armed person, closong the gap of distance and grab, punch ot tackle them, before the armed person could draw their gun. Or, if they were fast enough, before the person could even properly aim a drawn gun.
How close was the soldier? It was almost impossible to tell in the woods. But, feeling a bit cocky, Ariadne decided to go for it. Rushing from her hiding spot, she launched herself at the female soldier, swinging her mother's axe, hoping to smack the other woman's legs with the flat, and blue colored, part of the blade.
