Re: Episode Two - Alternative Energy

Harry growled at that, a low mechanical rattle of his voice box. "I seem to recall her," he pointed at Delilah, "being the one to start that by holding a gun to his head! Ain't my job to get you out of trouble you start."

"And yeah, you been real silent. What with all your growling and death glares and stalking off whenever he's around. Might as well have been screaming at the top of your lungs." He leans in. "So if you have shit to say, say it. It ain't like the rest of us can fucking read minds."

Re: Episode Two - Alternative Energy

"Hey Fletcher, could we bottle up some of the testosterone flying around here and use that to power your machines?  Might let us cloak the entire damn militia."  Kelly jabbed at everyone's expense.  She really had no animosity toward either Harry or Dean, she blamed McKellar for starting the dick swinging competition.  You could not be angry at men for having to join in, it was in their nature and it would calm down once they were separated.  "Look we can argue about all of this later."

She looked at McKellar but pointed at Mitchel.  "For what it's worth, I believe him.  That truck... communicates.  Tried to use me for it once.  Didn't work out too good, I'm not smart enough to understand it.  But I know it does.  It can't be reasoned with in the short term, it can be coaxed but that takes too long.  We need him-", she pointed to Fletcher, "For the technical support to make this stuff work, because I'd bet no one else can even if they can understand what the hell he just said.  He-", she pointed to Mitchel, and "knows what he's doing and has the long range precision this little picnic will need.  And him-" she pointed to Harry "-you want to send for damn sure.  That leaves two."

In a better... well okay very slightly less horrific, world, Kelly would command McKellar to go to, if someone was to get killed doing this she couldn't think of a nicer guy.  But the Black Dog had spoken.  Via proxy.

"Unfortunately, you send Harry, you send me, because so far I'm the best at keeping the other unreasonable machine we have to deal with at bay.  And great as he his, Harry's best up close and personal, and I've pretty much tailored my style to standing at his back and not getting in his way, my only purpose to bark out an order to shut his damn chip up.  So that means we better take her."  She pointed now at Delilah.  "Because I can't shoot for shit.  Go ahead, tell me how I'm wrong.  I'll wait."

"You got a problem with Del, talk to Del.  You're accusing me.  I've done nothing but help the squad, talking to Dog like he's a person, and not cause trouble.  Unlike you.  My opinions are mine and I do what I choose.  And I chose to let you make your own without coloring from my history.  Now go try to bully someone else," he replied tersely, unmoving and done with airing Harry's bullshit in front of company.

Re: Episode Two - Alternative Energy

Kelly sighed.  "Think about that huh?"  She asked McKellar.

Her first thought was to jump in on Harry's side and argue with Dean, but she quickly realized this wasn't going to help the situation right now.

A horrible thought occurred to her.  She could probably command him to stand down.  But that... that was beyond the pale for her.  That was an awful line she must never cross.  But sometimes thinking about the absolute wrong thing to do gives insight to the right thing to do.

She approached Harry.  She was practically two feet shorter than him, and a fraction of his weight.  She looked absolutely dimunitive at his side, and put one of her calloused, scarred hands on his metal appendage.  Not the one with the saw, she wasn't going anywhere near that damn thing.

"Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.  For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God."  She spoke to him softly, her eyes pleading.  "For what it's worth you're right, but is it really important to be right, right now?  Can you let it go, for me?"

Though the others likely wouldn't be able to hear her (though maybe they could...) it was obvious she was pleading.  It didn't make Kelly look particularly dignified to have to beg someone else to solve the problem, but hopefully it gave the parties to the dispute a dignified out, even if it didn't resolve anything.

Harry scowled, but he stepped back a bit as Kelly touched him. His sensors registered the pressure, but he couldn't really feel it. Not like he'd been able to before his canning. He opened and closed his fist a bit.

He looked at Dean. "I'd like you to explain," he says, as calmly as he can manage, "where you're coming up with this 'McKellar can't ride' policy thingy. You say The Dog's telling you this? I want to know why. What is The Dog telling you that he can't get through to me?"

Kelly turned her eyes on Dean, though her hand remained where it was, as if she could actually physically check Harry.  She didn't say anything but if a face could say Please just explain it to him and nothing else!, hers did.

Re: Episode Two - Alternative Energy

Delilah struggled her way up onto the Dog's running board, and looped her arm though a siderail to hang on.

"Fuckstick brainraping a prisoner and me aside? He makes an irritatin' point. We got precious little time to bicker, even less to plan. If you want a good reason for the boyband to hoof it, I'll give ya the military version: Hammer and anvil. We camouflage, wait for the raid with the Dog as bait. They ain't expecting pushback, so their formation? It's gonna suck. It's gonna suck hot, sweaty ass. That means we can hold 'em at bay real easy and they ain't gonna be looking at what's behind 'em. McKellar, you and your boys come in behind, send 'em to Hell with automatics.

"'Why not bring y'all on the Dog with us?' Because the muties might have lookouts watching the stead already. They'll see the Dog, won't see us real good, but they'll see the whole unshielded militia and pull back. We lose our shot. If y'all walk in, helluva good chance nobody notices until it's too late."

Re: Episode Two - Alternative Energy

McKellar eyed all the exchanges with his cold glare, trying to follow along with all that was said and not actually said.  Kelly's argument was listened to, as was her note to consider it.  Del too.  But his answer to it all was simple enough, "So...  Me and mine stay here.  We trust you people to find the farmstead and save my people."  He obviously was not a fan of the idea, but, "I have no real choice here.  You won't let us on your truck...  Or your truck won't.  Whatever.
We can't even back up your plan.  We can't walk there in time.  Am I allowed to still use the radio before you go?

"So, uh, McKellar might be the biggest asshole this side've a D.C. crater full a dead donkeys, but these people still chose him ta protect them.  Way I see it we'd be doin' em short if we didn't use him for the purpose, 'specially if it means us gettin' lost on some back road lookin' for a place not intended ta be found while good folks is busy dyin'."  Fletcher commented.

"Now I dunno why the Driver don't want ta give him and his a lift now, when he was fine with it before, but maybe you'd better tell him why it's important, 'n how it'll prolly help get the Dog back home.  I'm sure the people a Lockesburg'd be plenty grateful 'n willin' ta reward the effort with supplies for the cause.  Dunno how far it is 'tween here 'n home, but couple cans a fuel or the like'll only make the trip easier."

Harry was still waiting for an answer, but a thought occurred to him. "Yeah, The Dog not wanting McKellar along is damn strange..." There had been something strange in The Dog's last communication to him. He was still linked, though. "Let me try something." He sent a query through to The Dog.

Harry frowned as he considered the message he was getting.

He looks over at McKellar.

"I think I see what the problem is." Harry say. He continues looking at McKellar. "The Driver thinks you were trying to mindlink with him for some reason. That's why he didn't want you along. So I'll make you a deal. You stop trying to mindrape our truck, and we got no issue with taking you and your boys. At least far enough so that we can actually get into a good ambush range."

He looks back at Dean. "I reckon I owe you an apology. Jumped to conclusions too fast. You're right, you ain't done nothin' wrong by the rest of us."

Re: Episode Two - Alternative Energy

It had been a while since he'd been this angry.  Things just built up and opening old wounds were not the greatest combination.  He didn't move when Kelly pushed her way between them, didn't look at her.  He was focused and ready for things to go even more downhill than they already were.  The rest of what everyone else was saying only registered in the back of his mind but it was still only a secondary thought.  When Harry stepped back and Kelly turned to look, Dean's tightened eyes glanced at her for a brief moment.  He debated, briefly, but his ire was up and he was far from calm.  Harry's apology wasn't exactly about what set everything off but Dean recognized it for an olive branch of sorts.

Rather than push it and likely make things worse, he just nodded curtly.  Taking a step back, he turned and walked away.  He headed back to his gunner spot on the trailer and sat to wait for the rest of this to shake out.  It wasn't his concern anymore; he just needed to find his center once more.

Re: Episode Two - Alternative Energy

McKellar's eyes widened..just a little... the accusation.  Then narrowed again as he eyed up at the cyborg.  Jaw tight, he responded cold and level, "I promise not to...mindrape...your truck."  If that answer seemed accepted, McKellar made to climb up into the cab to use the indicated radio equipment...

For McKellar's part, he intends to climb up and use the radio as he asked about to radio Lockesburg.  To Warn and try to scramble what mobile forces he has to back up the defense and secure other positions.

Dean is in position on the trailer; along with Martin, Prudence, and the suspicious rifle squad.  Crowboy will want to be wherever Kelly is, but will be willing to take whatever spot she indicates.  And if she doesn't, he'll find one...just be sad that his hero didn't acknowledge him...  Sniff.  Any final responses, positions, plans before heading off...  Make 'em now!

As a side note, the Weirdoes did have some conventional firearms.  Only one was armed with the paintball gun.  Anyone interested in a gun?  Anyone trust Crowboy with more than a knife?

Kelly just breathed relief.  She backed off everyone.  She wasn't going to stop McKellar, though she partially wondered if she should.

"Come on you two."  She cajoled her stooges Crowboy and Steve.  Because they were her stooges now, all right?  "Hey, where's your buddy?"

Re: Episode Two - Alternative Energy

As Kelly was figuring out Steve had flown the coop, she was deciding what if anything should be done about that and trying to help get things moving along when they found it.

That sword.

When she recognized it, her eyes went wide and bright.  Kelly wasn't too considerate as she shoved aside its discoverer and promptly confiscated it.

Her eyes wet immediately.  There wasn't any hiding the fact the sight of it made her cry.  She had just enough composure to know she couldn't do this out here in plain sight.

Stunned, she cradled the blade like a baby and went over to the Black Dog, climbed in, all the way to the back of the sleeper, closing the door, still holding it in her lap.

"Oh God, who has said there can be no greater love than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends; in your mercy have pity on the soul of my brother Al Dickson; that I may see him again in the joy of everlasting brightness. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."

And she proceeded to lose her wits for a moment.

Re: Episode Two - Alternative Energy

Harry, noting Kelly's sudden sorrow, followed her into the cab. He listened to her prayer, and bowed his head. He wasn't particularly religious -- sure, he had a demon powering him, but that was really just a shorthand he used for "malevolent spirit thing," and was sort of dubious about the religious titles everyone used for Judgement Day, The Reckoners, The Four Horseman, etc. being, you know, those actual According-To-Hoyle biblical things. It's not that he didn't believe in the supernatural, it was just that he figured most everyone had attached biblical titles to the horrible things that had happened and that the truth of them was something else.

But he knew religion was important to Kelly, so he muttered a small "Amen." at the end of her prayer. He wanted to ask for details, but this wasn't anywhere close to a good time for that, so he just remained close so that if she needed someone to reach out to, someone was there.

Kelly grabbed the top of her head with one hand, and looked up to see Harry, surprised anyone had paid any attention to her in all this confusion.

She was obviously upset, but she was glad he'd followed her.  Because he was the only one here who knew, and no one wanted to follow the walking can.

She saw no reason not to tell him, though she kept her voice low.

Re: Episode Two - Alternative Energy

Kelly was still shook, but she was doing better.  A momentary freakout had let it out of her system.  Carefully, but dangerously, she ran an educated finger down the temper and edge of the sword in her lap.

"Look at this thing.  It's rusted, and the edge is rolled, point is ruined.  They've been using it like a damn crowbar.  Ya don't get this kind of pitting and patina overnight.  They've had this for a while."

Noting the irony of talking to a metal man about the condition of metal, she nonetheless slid Connor partially out of his scabbard to show the contrast.  Kelly's sword took some abuse at times, sure, but she didn't use it to open crates with, and it was shiny and straight, unlike the other blade, which was starting to look its age due to abuse.

She seemed better.  Still upset, but talking it out, talking thru it, helped a lot to snap her back to normal.

"Is there anything else we need to finish up out there?"

Re: Episode Two - Alternative Energy

McKellar got finished radioing Lockesburg and the Harrison Farmstead.  The messages were short and used some kind of code phrases.  He waited until he received the proper affirmatives before signing off.  As Kelly and Harry got in, he sensed that he should grant some room for a bit.  So he went to check on the riflemen.

The riflemen weren't what you'd call happy, but they seemed clear on the mission and who the enemy was in this case.  Again, bot happy but professional.  Needs must at times.

Martin and Prudence took up the tail of the trailer as per usual.  They took the time available to set up the recently "acquired" .50 cal.  The big barrel sticking out between the shielding ramps at the end of the trailer.

Crowboy decided to take up a new spot on the running board of the cab.  He didn't ask, of course.  Just took the spot, holding onto a grab iron and standing firm.

When the time came to go, McKellar made his way back to the cab to be the guide.  Which involved a somewhat tense moment of silent negotiation with Guard Crowboy.  He was allowed aboard, but Crowboy made it clear he was /watching/ McKellar.  The old soldier didn't seem like he cared even a little bit about it.

Once everyone was in a place with weapons ready, The Black Dog rolled back down the old farm track to the highway....
