[IC] The Tavern

The outer city was a fairly wild and wolly area around the docks, but the customs officials made sure that the larger central docks were well maintained and orderly. The place was bustling with commerce.

The tavern you were at was a large one, well made and clearly prosperous (and somewhat expensive, though it was no drain on your finances). The wood and furnishings were simple but well made and fully varnished, and the place was not filthy as many metropolitan taverns.

From inside, a very odd music played ambiant music (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwyznoWJDHI) by a smiling man who's attention was on his strange mechanical instrument - it looked quite complicated. The smells of cooking fish and herbs were quite pleasant, and many seemed to be enjoying a chilled sweet wine, mint tea and other drinks. Bread seemed to be in short supply, though it was available (but expensive).

The place was crawling with captains and officers from various ships of countless nations (very few of their crew could afford this place), well to do merchants having a nice dinner before returning to their home, and off duty customs officials who got a substantial discount eating there. It was quite a multicultural group, even for Vissio, though all seemed to have money.

It was not a particularly busy time of day, which was good, as your crew was taking up a very large portion of the inn.

[IC] The Tavern

Several minutes after leaving the gate, Gaja quietly entered by the main door.  And then she more or less stopped in place, peering around the central hall to take it in.  She'd spent a few months in one of the Oasis cities, and news always trickled in from kinfolk who'd chosen travel in other lands over following the herds, so she had some idea what people did here.  Not much, though.  She took a few deep breaths and frowned; as good as everything smelled, still her mouth never watered, and her stomach never growled.  It wasn't natural.

"As soon as they've bought their slaves so we can leave," she promised herself.  None of the legends she knew explained any of what had happened to her.  She'd need a more experienced shaman by far.  No one had ready weapons, and the body language of the patrons didn't point at one particular leader, whatever that man on the docks had said.  Instead, she crossed the room and sat cross-legged in front of the musician to watch with a mixture of appreciation and professional curiosity.

[IC] The Tavern

Many of the "officers" of the crew, those who had emerged as leaders, slightly more capable than others, had gathered around a corner, reserving a few private seats for the Gods. A few others from the boats were here, enjoying a nice fresh meal and the odd but pleasant music.

Sarnai didn't quite skip out of her seat to approach Raja. "I saved you a seat!" She motioned back towards the corner. The Doctor frowned. "Ok, sorry, we saved you all seats and your own table. The stew here is AMAZING."

And she said this as one who wasn't a huge fan of seafood.

The tavern keeper had ensured that the group's money was good, and then rented them out a corner of the tavern. Their look said "poor yokel" but their money and clothes said "rich". Plus, no one wanted to mess with the scary centurion or the doctor.

[OOC To clarify
I thought the boat was going to disintegrate and was going to suggest the crew take a few minutes at the tavern to figure out what the hell you would do.

However, Scholar has made the boat a permanent thing with dominion basically to solve that problem and to level up, so they will be staying on the boat. BTW, this place really is called 'the tavern' for reasons. ]

Gaja catches Sarnai's eye and makes a show of mean-mugging the Doctor.  Standing to join the others, she trails a finger over one of the drone strings on the hurdy-gurdy.  The music immediately takes on a more resonant quality, capturing the acoustics of the dining hall in ways usually reserved for the One's cathedrals.  The Conversations fade to a stop around the room as the song draws the speakers' attention away.  Gaja sways a little in time to the music when she crosses the room and takes the seat Sarnai was so excited to offer.

"Now that we're all safely out of reach, where do you plan to go?" It was the first she'd voluntarily discussed the matter.

Call it a miraculous analogue to Passionate Crescendo directing awe at the musician.

Sarnai smiled and was torn between the entrancing music and Gaja herself "Wherever you do, I think, if that's ok. I haven't been on my own since..well, it's been years, and back then I'd never seen a city. I think I'll try and find a horse though. I could use a horse."

The musician looked awed and continued playing his heart out, now that his music went from being quite good to superlative. Even the servers who were jaded to his performances stopped appreciatively.

Gaja returned a pained smile and briefly let the tune catch her up, as well, to avoid having to answer. She'd blessed the music, not the musician; his skill really was impressive.

"Sarnai, you need to understand." She addressed the young woman directly, but the way sounds beyond the table vanished meant it was easy enough for everyone seated to hear her. "I will be leaving soon. I will be going out into the Wastes. You might like it there, even; I could help you make a kith plea. But I will be coming back here before long. And then there will be blood and screaming and fire. I didn't mean to destroy the homes back on that sea-rock. Here, I will."

Her eyes swept the others present for reactions. She'd taken care of eavesdroppers, but the rest of the new gods were Outsiders who liked Cities, and being honest around their servants was still a calculated risk.

Sarnai did not seem particularly bothered by the prospect.

"I might not be good for that, but that's the sort of thing my people talked about.. the ones that didn't ally with the regency.

It is the chief's right to declare a war. And you are FAR more than a cheif." She gave a soft smile.

There was mostly silence from the other assembled crew who had followed the Godbound from the island- no one wanted to speak against the Godbound. The Doctor perhaps had the courage, but he had the good sense not to speak to her. Though it was just as likely he didn't care.

However, one other person chimed up, a young blind man who followed Claire and Gaja's music.

"But.. why?" There was some concern in his voice, but mostly a simple failure to understand.

The music continued in the background, drawing the attention of the rest of the tavern.

"Because I am the last of my tribe who isn't dead, buried alive, or pregnant with some baron's bastard who'll grow up in chains.  And the merchants who did it were Vissian soldiers.  They've been trying to hunt my people out of existence for generations."  She tries very hard to keep the anger out of her voice; that much is obvious.  But more obvious is that there is more anger buried out of sight than she can really suppress.  "The beasts of the waste are the shame of our ancestors, and we have kept them under control for a thousand years.  We have survived on what little can be scraped from a poisoned land for a thousand years.  And for what we must do to stay alive, Vissio would destroy us all and free that land's poison to wash over their fields."

She shook her head sharply, not that the blind man would notice.  He might have felt the vibration from that one leg she kept bouncing on her toes.  The self-control was going to other tasks.

"Because their leaders cower behind walls and demand that others pay the price for their comfort.  When there are no walls, will they stand between me and their people?  Will they repay the lives that bought their safety?  Sarnai is right, but a chief has responsibilities, too."

She takes a heavy breath, and her tone briefly shifts to a more relaxed one.  "The farmers and potters and netfishers, they'll be free to run away.  I'm not some clock-hearted monster, to wipe out a people.  But their soldiers, their great clans, the merchants who bought my family..."

Embarrassment quickly overtakes anger, and she pulls back, lowers her hackles.

"I'm sorry.  I forget I am fearsome now.  Sarnai, you can follow me as far as you like.  And you can start with a horse, but maybe something faster eventually.  Relax for now; I won't go far."  She rises from her chair, stew forgotten.  The music fades back in, but its spell doesn't grip them.

She frees the musician himself, too, while she's at it, to make sure he doesn't miss her point.  'Think about whether you want to be able to do this again,' she says to him alone as she turns to leave. 'I'll find you after some time.'

The musician, a heavy-set well-dressed (for a tavern musician) bearded man in his early middle age, laughs, fighting the tears in his eyes as he lays aside his instrument for a moment to pay his respects to Gaja.

A number of the patrons did not bother hiding their tears, the odd mechanical sounds filling their hearts with memories of home or their loved ones. Others had rose and swayed with the music.

"Of course I do! Amazing experience! I felt as though I was channeling the heavens for a brief time.

I don't suppose I could buy you a drink or a wedding ring?" He winked playfully from across the room, to a few good natured laughs.

Gaja finds she is no longer charged for drinks here, courtesy of the musician. Odd that he never introduced himself.

Gaja's in early, today.  The sun had barely passed mid-sky, and the place was uncommonly empty.  But she finds a seat along one wall of the grand room and "borrows" a familiar hurdy-gurdy from, well, wherever it was a moment ago.  She takes a while warming up to it.  Not as though she could actually fail to make it produce the sounds she wanted, but it's best to let the instrument suggest its own vocabulary.  The result is only a little entrancing.

She doesn't really explain to the staff what she's doing, but free entertainment sells itself.

Increase had made his way back to the Arcship to perform inspections and make sure that the ship was holding up well in harbor. He had grown oddly attached to the behemoth of a ship since its existence had served as the backbone of his budding ascension. All the same he lost himself when he caught sight of Gaja.

Even from the distance he was at she stole his attention. He watched as she entered a tavern and his mind absently informed him that many of the crew were frequenting that tavern. Deciding that it was best to touch base with his ally he left the ship and headed there.

Entering he made a quick survey of the room before heading towards Gaja.

"It's good to see you again."

Her head comes up quickly, though she stays leaning over the instrument.  A smile blossoms quickly.  "Increase.  Come, sit.  Haven't seen you in a few days.  How is life on retainer?"  She keeps playing as she talks, soft enough to not drown herself out, but her melodies actually grow more complex the less attention she pays them.

"Are you ever not working, lately?"  She still doesn't quite sit up.  It keeps her looking up at him impishly.

"And now we are almost all here.  A pity Plaga seems to have vanished.  I might have to leave before we find her again."  She looks down again, hiding her face in her focus on the strings.  "I would like you to come along for part of the trip, Increase.  That is, if you are not so loyal now that you cannot abide another family coming to benefit..."

"Mmh, there was talk about violence, but I still think I'm being underestimated in that way." She pouts lightly, but clearly isn't invested in the display.  It breaks almost immediately back into warm and relaxed.  "I've been planning to head up the coast since before we even made it back from our get-fished trip.  That thing must be ancient, so some of the coastal tribes will have to know how to drive it away, at least.  And if I knew how to direct a herd before, I think I can pick up their techniques, as what I've become.  No?"

She looks quite pleased with herself and bounces her instrument into the air to cross her knees the other way.  It works into the percussive part, anyway.  "I really do love these things.

"So I have been delayed in leaving a few times.  This time, it is to solve a mystery, and I have already caught a spy who can lead me to the solution."
Okay no, now she looks pleased with herself.  "But in between, there is a lock with no door, and such dangerous guards as can match even my spy's magic.  And so—"

She stops even playing, then, and leans in toward them each in turn.  "I need to find someone who can solve an impossible puzzle - and someone who can face terrible danger alongside me - to solve my mystery."  Finally she sits back.  The hurdy-gurdy had disappeared at some point while she had attention on her face, and it was too large for any nearby hiding spot.

"Marginal, of course, for those who don't know how to irrigate the desert, build sea-walls, and moderate storms. And the Dwellers in Darkness will take powerful fighters to defeat."

"Sounds like an interesting quest you have, though," continued Claire, "and one where a combat automaton might prove useful. What is this mystery that you must face?"
