Godbound - Character Advice

"Have clearly defined motivations and goals"

This is REALLY critical. If you read no other bits, read this one.

The only time I've killed a Godbound so far is when one of the PC's realized his nihilist character didn't have any goals or motivations to change the world.

While the dragon sorcerer wanted to tear asunder the walls of creation and make a race of reality warping dragons, and the former Templar gathered a mighty following to topple the world, he just sort of whined about the pointlessness of it all. So he got his character killed, intentionally.

His new character seeks to free his people, create a new homeland for all the dwarves spread throughout the spheres (it's a weird world) seeks omni-universal abolishment of slavery, and wants the utter destruction of the illythid race. Also, he's a liche.

What I'm saying is, he has clear goals, stuff to work towards, and he utterly HATES slavery, to the point where he has gone out of his way to obliterate those who have slaves, even if they would have allied with the party (when he can get away with it, anyway). This character works much better in the game, because he has clear defined motivations.

"Be weird and creative"
Godbound is a game where you can play nearly anything. While what you can get away with depends on the setting, you have a lot to work with. This is a game that doesn't think twice about letting you play a liche, or a vampire. Or a golem.

"What things does your character like/hate? What does he/she enjoy? What can't your character stand? Does your character have an asctetic he/she enjoys?"

Just some thoughts. A few minor details, a bit of verimisilitude, adds a lot of depth to the character. Feel free to steal bits from your favorite characters in other media. Want to make a Peak Human/Vengeance/Night Batman clone? Cool.

Think about your character's national/tribal identification. How does that colour how they see the world? How do they interact? What are they connected with in this world?

Just some thoughts.

His omnicidal maniac a character type? Destroying the universe is a type of change right? ;)

"Hit the ground running with short-term goals."

In my opinion, short-term objectives that you can begin working on immediately are even more important than long-term ones. With short-term goals, you can immediately start developing your character and their relationship with the party by pursuing their interests, as well as having a much clearer idea of where your first Dominion points are going to go.

That does remind me of something

"Figure out a reason for your character to work with the group"

I don't care if you are playing the most immoral bastard this side of a George RR Martin badguy, but your character had better be able to work with the other PC's. 'But my character would do this' isn't really a good excuse to do bizarre random things that screw up everyone else's fun, because YOU made the character.

One good thing to do is talk OOC about what you are aiming for when you act a certain way if things start to get objectionable. That way you can work out stuff between the ST and the other players rather than risking IC tit for tat escalations.

It's actually been a while since this has come up in my games.
