Interlude 1 - Jelmine

This interlude takes place the morning after the attack (Freezeday of Movement Week of the Storm Season) and ends during the afternoon of Wife's Day, Winds Day of Movement week.

Just to remind you of the Orlanthi/Gloranthan calendar:

You have five regular seasons: Sea Season, Fire Season, Earth Season, Dark Season, Storm Season.

Each regular season has eight weeks: Disorder Week, Harmony Week, Death Week, Fertility Week
Stasis Week, Movement Week, Illusion Week, Truth Week.

There is a special week known as Sacred Time, which has only two weeks:  Luke Week and Fate Week.  Every religion has rituals during this week.  In terms of mythology, this is the time period of the Lightbringer's Quest and the Great Compromise.

Every week is divided into the following days: Freezeday, Waterday, Clayday, Windsday, Fireday, Wildday, Godsday.

It will become clear to everyone that Wife's Day is important to Jelmine, and anyone can tell you that this is the day priestesses are traditionally ordained in Jelmine.
[Private to Henetha Hofaktsdottir: This is a very minor holiday in Esorlia.  Queen Day, which occurred on Clayday, Fertility Week, Storm Season, is a much grander holiday.]

Summing up:  You have 2 1/2 days before the next scene.

This interlude is designed for you to have discussions among yourself, meet various NPCs, and get to know the town and surrounding areas.

If you want to have a private conversation with an NPC, we will do it through Private Message.  If you want to have a more open discussion, we will do it in this thread.  I will also post updates in this thread.

Patrols and Scouting:  Farin and Jalmon have come to an agreement about patrols outside of town and scouting.  If you want to volunteer for any of these, please tell me.

Introduction:  Arriving during the late afternoon of Waterday are two Jelmine hunters, Kevaten and his apprentice Astorl. They were off getting game for the Wife Day feast, a feast prepared entirely by the men.  They have returned with a buck, a number of rabbits and game birds.  OOC:  Astorl is a new PC.

OOC:  Scene 1 - Jelmine will remain open until Thursday in case anyone wants to make a final remark.

In reply to Narrator (msg # 1):

(OOP: I need to check Argan Argar's and Ernalda's Holy Days.)

Bingling will cherck with Magora and Varinton, and if they are amenable then he will volunteer to assist with the patrols of Farin and Jalmon.

If he sees the Issaries initiate he'll mention this. "I am going to volunteer to help patrols. I bet you can see things in the day far better than I can. Want to come with me and let me practice my Tradetalk?"

Patrols & Scouting

OOC:  Please indicate if your character is going to participate in the scouting or patrols.  I want to use your skills stats whenever appropriate.

On Waterday, Fanin and Jalmon send out scouts to see if they can track the creatures back to their origin.

On Waterday, both Fanin and Jalmon send out patrols.  Fanin sends two patrols into the hills (south of town), and one horse patrol between Uz lands and Jelmine.
Jalmon sends one patrol to the East and one to the West.

The Trolls and Trollkin do a patrol around the town at night.  There are many that are shocked at first.  Rumors spread until Zelda, the Uz Leader says that they were sent to ensure that a ritual occurred in Sacred Time; Cragspider would be greatly displeased if anything prevented this ritual.

Saberak will assist with the mounted patrol, riding along on Selan.  If she's able to push herself, she'd also assist with at least part of the Uz patrol.  She has learned some about the Uz of the Blue Moon Plateau within the Empire and is curious to learn more about those who live here.

OOC:  I just needed an idea of who is going to go with which group.
Henetha, the priestesses don't have a great deal for you to do yet, so they will consent to let you join the patrols.

There are enough people joining patrols, so you don't have to worry about them not being filled.  Some of the Lunar troops are joining the Jelmine patrols that are on foot.  The Lunar troops are concentrating on sending long-distance patrols out as well as a few scouts.

Tomorrow I will update the patrols.

Interlude 1 - Jelmine

Day one patrol - Jelmine:  Astorl, Henetha, and Tamarkorda (Garik can join this one if he would like.

It is a cold and windy day.  The clouds above promise rain the days to come.  You go out with five of the Jelmine Weapon Thanes.  Your patrol is taking you on the southeastern flank of the hills.  Toward midday Astorl notices tracks.  After a few minutes, and conferencing with the Weapon Thanes, you decide to follow the tracks a little way into the hills.  As you do, it becomes clear that these are Broo tracks.  They are about a day old, so they could have been part of the force that attacked you, but these tracks are leading deeper into the hills.  You come to a stream that comes from up hill, and you find Broo excrement on the banks.  Best not to drink the water.

After another hour following the tracks, Bermakt, the leader of your patrol, and Murval Weapon Thane, orders you to reverse course.  "We need to tell the Elders that there are Broo in the Hills."  When asked if you should continue, "during this season, the hills are extremely dangerous.  Not for the Broo, but for landslides, flash floods, and animals.  Once it gets dark, we will have to find shelter.  We won't be able to follow this trail come nightfall."
[Private to Astorl: Astorl, Bermakt is correct about the others.  You could continue, as you know the hidden trails of the hills, but it would be fool hearty for you to confront the Broo alone.  There are paths from Jelmine that would lead into the area you suspect the Broo are hold up.  It is a place you would normally avoid.]

"Some fool-hearty people have tried to establish homesteads in the hills, but most fail, and this is the season they fail in."

Night one patrol:  Bingling, Ullr, and Saberak will be with the trolls.
Dying Moon

Saberak, it is Dark.  While most of the Uz move ahead, Bingling and Ullr hang back with you and another human from the Garlin family (Desanth, a decent warrior, but not a weapon thane.  He is very good with a sling).  The night patrol goes uneventfully.

As you travel, it begins to rain.  Before you left, you had heard from the Weapon Thane Bermakt that there were Broo tracks leading into the woods.  Desanth agreed to help the trolls follow the paths into the woods.  Others advised against it, but Zelda was determined to find the Broo.  The evening is filled with misadventures as a landslide diverts you from your course, and then a flash flood forces you to scramble up the hill.

You return to Jelmine wet, miserable, and empty handed.  Zelda is in a fit that they did not find the Broo.

Day two patrol (afternoon to evening) - Lunar Horse:  Saberak

After some rest, Saberak joins one of the far patrols heading to the northwestern flank of the mountain. This is the side that faces Snake Pipe Hollow, which is quiet.  Your leader, Danus remarks on it.  By quiet, I do not mean calm; I mean that there are no sounds coming from it.  You get the sense of a calm before a horrible storm.

Day two patrol (morning to afternoon)- Jelmine:  Astorl, Bingling, Tamarkorda, and Oligur.
You follow the path that the Uz took into the Hills.  Astorl is able to guide the patrol down animal trails into an area he suspects the Broo may have gone.  As you get closer, you start to see items hanging from the trees.  There is a feeling of wrongness in this palce.
Astorl steers you past these, and then up onto a ridge that overlooks a plateau.
[Private to Astorl: Some of the farms that failed left behind spirits and ghosts.  Some even the animals avoid.  This is one such place.  The charms were left by you and other hunters as warnings, taboo.  These charms were made by Sandein, the Shaman of Daka Fel in Jelmine.]

There is no sign of life on the plateu.  As you circle, you eventually find a Broo trail leading off back to the southeast.  You start to press on, but as the day starts growing darker, it is decided to return to Jelmine.  At least you have a better idea of where the Broo are heading.

Night two patrol - Ullr and Henetha.
With the information from the other patrols, the Uz go off in search of Broo.  This is the night of the Black Moon, so Ullr hangs back with Henetha.

It takes hours, but this time the Uz are better prepared for the weather and its consequences.  You eventually come upon the remains of a camp.  It had not been abandoned for long, and the excrement of the broo were everywhere.  By smell alone the Uz began to track until the sun began to crest over the hills.  It is obvious that the Broo are circling back to the Northwest.  The Uz think about pressing on, then Zelda stops.  In anger, "we must return."  Looking at Henetha.  "This is the day of the Earth Festival, is it not?  The Fire Witch will have our heads if we do not attend."

"Your head, perhaps," says Umgar, Runelord of Zorak Zoran.  "I will continue to follow them."

OOC:  I'm going to give a few days for everyone to finish any comments, then we will move to scene 2, the festival. (I'll start that thread on Tuesday).

Interlude 1 - Jelmine

On the day following the council, shortly before going out on the nighttime patrol, Saberak arrives at the domicile of Desola and asks to speak with the priestess.  She waits patiently until the Ernaldan arrives and then conveys a message to her.  Saberak stumbles through her Tradetalk as best she can, deep shadows cast across her face as the sun disk begins to slip behind the hills of the Far Place.

"Idovanus the Preceptor has asked for a meeting with the heads of Jelmine.  He has just been to the other world and saw things that are important to be shared.  He knows why the town was attacked.  What words should I give to him?"

Interlude 1 - Jelmine

OOC:  This was supposed to be public.  I'll leave it for comment, and then move forward tomorrow.

While Henetha is speaking with Kalisla, a young girl comes in.
"Mistress Kalisla, there is a woman from the fort that has come to speak with Desola.  She talks funny."

Kalisla comes out of the temple and heads toward Saberak, who is standing outside of the Priestess's home.

Kalisla, wife of Varinton of Garlin, is a woman who looks to be in her late 40's, with black hair and deep brown eyes.

"Greetings daughter of the Earth," says Kalisla.  "I have been told that you seek Desola, but she is currently in meditations preparing for the upcoming festival.  Please tell me your message, and I will convey it to her."

When she hears your message, she frowns for a moment.  "While you bring important news, I believe it would be better for you to seek Danbal of Durven.  As the Chieftain of Jelmine, it would be best if Danbal first met this man and talked with him.  I will be there as well so that this information can be conveyed to Desola."

She motions for the girl that delivered Saberak's message, "lead this daughter," indicating Saberak, "to the Durven compound, and ask that Danbal listens to her petition."

Looking to Saberak, "may you find peace this day."
