Sacred Week

On the eve of Sacred Week, all of the town Elders, including Desola, enter a large tent (Yurt) as a purification (think sweat lodge).  They will not be out until morning.

As the night wears on, the wind begins to slow, until it eventually stops as the Sun rises.  As it does, the air warms to a mild temperature.  The cold winds of Storm Season have passed.

As the sun rises, the Elders of Jelmine emerge from the tent dressed in ceremonial garb.
(the pictures are just representations of costumes).  They represent different figures from the Earth, Fire, Darkness, and Storm Tribe.

From the Mushroom caves, the Uz emerges.  Zelda is at the front, wearing a dark shawl and mask (and nothing else).

The elders of the village enact the story of Ernalda falling asleep.  What is interesting in this telling of the tale is that Argan Argar is the god that teaches Ernalda how to sleep and let her spirit pass into the underworld.

As her body lies (Desola) lies in state, the people of the town file past, laying dried flowers around the body, representing the loss of life that occurred when Ernalda left.  What is interesting is that the people then break off into their family groups, and begin to errect tents close to where the body lies.

In reply to Narrator (msg # 1):

Sanuzi remains awake and busy through Sacred Week Eve. He wanders about Jelmine, being of help to anyone who might have "celebrated" a bit too hard, or to remedy any situations that might arise as the Elders keep their solitary vigil.

As day breaks, if Sandien has no need of him, Sanuzi will help Hammask and Dattir in their preparations with the Garlin bloodline.

Sacred Week

OOC:
For the most part, there is one main event for the PCs, which will be a quest to help Tamarkorda.

There is a "scene" that will involve Oligur, but it is basically his participation in a Lunar Miracle/Mystery play.

Please tell me if there is a specific character or story you might be interested in as we go through this (you want more information on a story for example).

Sacred Week

OOC: I am going to start posting a few stories that are being told/presented/performed during sacred week. I suggest reading them closely.

Once the seas covered all. But the world grew and Ga, Earth, emerged from the depths. Mountain peaks, plains, ridges and hollows rose above the waves. Gata was born. Empress Earth joined the Cosmic Court.

Earth birthed twin daughters, Asrelia and Ty Kora Tek, who came out from the deepest earth. Asrelia’s daughters were Maran, Esrola and Ernalda, whose beauty and bounty brought life to the land.

Asrelia ruled the Earth Tribe and was the first Goddess to live outside the Great Mountain. She had many children but only a few are important to us here. From all the goddesses came Life. In that prehistoric Green Age, Flamal’s spores and seeds spread everywhere and everything was good. No drought or famine visited the land. Everyone lived in peace and plenty for all their lives which went on forever. It was the Golden Age.

Ty Kora Tek saw that which Asrelia could not.  As Fire lept from the Earth and ascended to the sky, Asrelia rejoiced in the warmth and light, seeing how it made the first Earth green.  But Ty Kora Tek saw the harm that Aether caused.  She spoke with Dame Darkness and welcomed her and her children into her cold embrace.  She began to take that which was vulnerable or valuable and hid them beneath the Earth.

The world grew and new things kept coming into existence. Things were made and born that confused the Old Gods of the Celestial Court and so the most ancient entities of the Spike appointed one of the younger entities, called The Emperor, to rule over the new world. Now many gods, Elder Races and tribes of human beings inhabited the world. Emperor Yelm ruled from the Golden City.

However, the great burst of creativity and freedom was over. The Emperor was appointed to oversee things As They Are, and further changes was frowned upon and discouraged. The Emperor brought all power to his own palace. He even forbade the Celestial Court from acting except upon his sole command.

The oppression and suppression of the Emperor could not restrain the universe forever. Many small changes occurred, especially as minor deities mated and bore children. Then the greater gods united, and born was Umath, a great god himself. Asrelia was beloved by Umath but was separated from him by the Elder Powers. All the ancient creative powers were polarities – paired and complete. Each goddess had a husband and each elemental had an opposite. That was the way of the world. Umath saw Asrelia and asked for her as his reward for driving away the invisible Predark army. Together, they would be complete. The Emperor refused this, saying it was inappropriate and then kept them apart. From this came sorrow and anger. From this was born Desire which would plague and enrich the descendants of these deities.

Umath seized his own place and exercised his power. The Emperor resisted more and more severely, until at last he sent an army, led by the Jagrekriand Red God who fought and killed Umath. The central powers rejoiced, thinking this would end the changes in the world.

Yelm the Emperor brought Order to the universe. When he extended his Cosmic Rule to include the Earth Tribe, Asrelia retired. The Queen divided up her earthly goods between her most important daughters. Maran Gor received The Great, Esrola received The Most and Ernalda received The Least.

With the Great, Maran Gor became the goddess of the earth’s greatest manifestations such as landslides, earthquakes, volcanoes, disease, autumn and disease. Those tools which bring death are also sacred to her, particularly Axes.

With the Most, Esrola became the goddess of the earth’s bounty. Children, food, sexual desire, and blood are her domain and she is known by many names to many peoples. Baskets carry her bounty and are sacred to her.

With the Least, Ernalda was acclaimed Queen of the Earth for her spiritual and magical powers were far greater than her sisters. Her power is not found in solid things but in actions, rules, ceremonies and families. Her symbol is the Loom, with which she weaves the fabric of family and society. She is Queen, Mother and Grandmother of the Earth Tribe and is the living power behind the world. Although she was given the Least, Ernalda is the greatest of all the gods and goddesses.

Many suitors vied for Ernalda’s favors and she gave them freely, choosing a new husband when the strength and virility of an old one waned. She and her sisters bore many children who are worshipped.

The Emperor decreed that Ernalda, though Queen of the Earth, must be given to him. Ernalda brought two of her own handmaidens Esra and Eninta with her. One brought her basket and the other the sacred birthing cloths. Kestra brought food for the long journey. At the Celestial Palace of the Emperor, Ernalda set aside a place for her Loom, and soon was weaving splendid raiment for the court. Other young goddesses joined her retinue: Berlintha, who made clothing from Ernalda’s cloth; Mahome, who tended the hearth fire, took service with Ernalda, leaving her Fire Tribe. Istena, who tends the kitchen, served those guests who visited the Loom and its goddess. Arnna, who came from the Earth Tribe later, guarded her treasure. Jesta, who could heal small hurts, assisted Ernalda in her work. Beseta and Besanga, sturdy mares, carried burdens for the others.

Throughout the rest of the Golden Age, she sheltered in the Celestial Palace, wove cloth for the Celestial Court on her loom, and bore the Emperor three children. But even in those days, the world was troubled though the Celestial Court would deny it. Indeed, they could not, by their nature see it. But Umath had already made his great Camp and war came to the borders of the Empire. Vermin had been seen in the kitchens of the Palace and creatures stalked the Perfect Garden. Ernalda was no longer safe. She needed a new protector.

Sacred Week

Meanwhile, over at the Lunar Fort...

Preceptor Idovanus tells the story of the Great Sister Deneskerva.

The Carmanian Warlords sent their armies to harry the people of Teelo Imara and the Carmanian sorcerors sent their demons to defile the places of her previous incarnations. They destroyed the Shrine of the Three Painted Sticks, enslaved the Blossom Princess, and brought fear to those who might follow Teelo Imara.

Finally, the Carmanian demons and their army came to the Miringite Caves in Darsen, and began a great sorcery spell that would prevent Teelo Imara from calling upon her previous manifestations. Before their spell could be completed, a dove flew to the entrance of the cave and called out, “Awaken Beloved Daughter! Your mother has returned!”

Rays of invisible light emerged from the darkness of the cave. Deneskerva emerged from the cave and her invisible light illuminated soldier, sorcerer, and demon alike. They dropped their weapons and grimoires, and fell to their knees before the Great Sister, pledging their souls to her. She mercifully accepted their offer, bade them abandon violence and showed them her mother’s Dance.

But why was Deneskerva hidden within the cave?
Deneskerva was one of the daughters of Lesilla, mask of the Goddess, once known as Verithurusa, Goddess of Mernita, the Great Mother of Humanity, and the material self of the Red Goddess and the Blue Moon. and was loved by Lesilla above all others.  The Great Sister Deneskerva was born when the island of Mernita rose during the Great Flood, and is the favored child of Lesilla, who showed Deneskerva the invisible light of Sedenya the Turner that permeates the material world. When Deneskerva’s own twin brother demanded that the people of Mernita reject Sedenya, Deneskerva was given her mother’s mirror and taken to the God Caves in the care of Natha. Because of this, Deneskerva did not die but remained hidden until Our Goddess revealed her again.

Even though they were born apart in time and space, Deneskerva is sometimes called the Red Emperor's Twin, but her more important title is the Mirror of the Red Emperor.  She is so often shown holding a round hand mirror, “my dear friend,” she calls it and often holds it to her breasts. This provokes her Dara Happan title, “Lady Vanity,” but that’s a misunderstanding, for she actually always holds the reflecting side outward, to whomever she is speaking to. In Darsen, it is called the Mirror of Beasts and Gods and is considered a sign of her ability to reveal wisdom. No one is sure what is on the backside.

Deneskerva was at the Goddess’ side during the battle of Castle of Blue and was there when her twin Takenegi the Red Emperor was first revealed by the Goddess. Like Takenegi, she has worn several Masks, although she discards them less readily than her twin.  The Goddess empowered Deneskerva to teach everyone something about the truth of Nysalor.  By her very existence, Deneskerva demonstrates Balance to the people of the Empire. Great Sister is the feminine counter-balance to the masculine Red Emperor. Just as the Emperor manifests through himself the visible rule of the material world, so does his twin manifest through herself the invisible rule of the material world.

During this tale, Astrelia portrays Deneskerva, Oligur the Red Emperor, and Zeti Lesilla.

Sacred Week

With the permission of Desola and the Elders, one night, Nadakar tells a story on open field in front of the Earth Temple.  All are invited to attend, and even this is done with the consent of Desola.  Nadakar is very respectful of the Earth Temple and stands on the opposite side of the field from the Temple.

"Good evening gentle people of Jelmine.  Your gracious mother has granted permission for this humble servant to tell a tale of the Celestial Court."  As he speaks, you can see those around you relaxing to his dulcet voice.  As he moves his hands, you can almost see the air moving around them.  As he continues, you can almost feel a presence in the air.

"The Celestial Court was housed within the spike, that great bastion of order brought low by the Chaos that was brought into the world.  There sat the Powers: Arcos, the one who held up the cosmos, and who is remembered as the God of Law; Harana Ilor, whose harp brought harmony and peace to the world; Kargan Tor, the god of courage, who in later days would be known as the God of War, but at first, there was no War, that was brought in later; Orenoar, the Truth Holder and Truth Teller, but truth is a funny concept even to this day; then there is her sister Tylenea, the Mistress of Masks, the one who hides within the funny concept of truth; Ratslaff, the mirror of Arcos, and the one remembered for the disorder he caused, but does not disorder have another name?; and finally among the Powers was Uleria, the Goddess of Love, who is today remembered not for her original purpose, but instead for the carnal pleasures she brings and the fertility that results from such couplings."  As he speaks and his hands move, the air seems to vibrate with power and all can see the Spike, and soon find themselves looking down upon a room around which sits the Power in a circle, and around them the four elemental rulers.

"Also part of the Celestial Court was the Elemental Rulers who formed the world upon which we stand.  While the Powers were the motivators, it was the Elemental Rulers that represented the physical manifestation of Glorantha.  First among equals was Dame Darkness, who is the order and pattern within shadow; Sir Sea, who is the source of all the waters that flowed from the structure created by Dame Darkness; then Empress Earth who took Dame Darkness's structure and separated the land from the sea; and finally Lord Light, the bright and firey Aether, who separated from Darkness completely and cloaked the world with the sky."  As he continues, the audience can see the world form around them.  "Some in this land claim Umath to be the fifth Elemental Ruler, but that is a story for a different time."  OOC: any who wants can make two rolls-Scan and Power.

"But this is not a story of the Elemental Rulers.  Instead, it is about the Power that survived unsullied.  Of all the powers, only Uleria remained when the Great Compromise was woven.  The others had ceased to be.  But how could the powers simply disappear?"  As he speaks, the scene begins to change.  One by one the powers vanish, only to be replaced by younger gods.

"When creation began, Uleria shared her gift with three of the Elemental Rulers, but she did not give all of her self.  She coupled with the Earth, bestowing upon it the lifegiving gift of birth.  While embracing Sir Sea, she granted his waters the ability to fertilize the Earth.  Even Dame Darkness received the gift of fertility but used it only once.  She did this by showing the three Elemental Rulers her love of them.  She tried to bestow this gift upon the Aether, but he was too lofty and rejected what he saw as base an carnal.  Because of this, he had to take the fertility of the other Rulers, some times by force."  What can be seen is what can only be described ask the skies rape of the Gata, the manifestation of fertility given by Uleria to Empress Earth.  You can hear shocks of horror from the gathered crowd, and some shouts of disbelief.

The scene then changes to show the blossoming of life and creation in the world; the coming of new gods, and the creation of the Man Rune.  "Uleria loved all that was created, and with each new creation, she blessed it with her love.  She shared her love, but never gave it away.  The other Powers though grew tired of these new creations and saw themselves above such creations.  Instead of ruling, they gave their powers to proxies to rule in their stead.  This is how Gods and Goddesses first gained their Powers.  Over time, the Powers of the Celestial Courts gave more of themselves to their proxies until nothing was left.  When Chaos blew into the world, they were powerless to prevent what was to occur.  Of all of them, only Uleria remains, for instead of giving her powers to others, she shared them.  Tonight, I continue her gift by sharing my love for you."  Suddenly, you feel a warmth surrounding and embracing you, and you feel those around you basking in the love radiating from Nadakar.  You feel the connections between you and those around you.

OOC:  After this story, all who attend either gain or increase a passion.  If you have Loyalty or Love of Jelmine, you gain 5% to that passion.  If you have no positive passion for Jelmine, you gain Love for Jelmine at 50%.

"I don't think I remember hearing that story of the Moonson wishing to ban the worship of his mother. Hmm. Lord Idovanus, why do you suppose he would do such a thing?"
"Ahem, well, uh, please tell me where I should stand, and so forth, I am ready to go."
"Astrelia... Zeti... it is my honor to participate in this holy story with you."

Oligur stammers, "Oh the.. the emperor. The... Oh."

After a pause he continues. "In the mirror..." Oligur squints and frowns. His voice is unusually quiet.
"Well, I...I do not like to put words to what I see.

I see... fear. Fear of loss. Fear of change. I see fear for those caught in the wake of the changing times, the Citizens in Esrolia, in Pavis in Boldome.
And I see re-regret, f-for wrongs done, for not only our people have suffered..."
his voice breaks and trails off.

"B-but, I also see something else, love and... and hope. Healing for the world... but perhaps not exactly as I have always thought it must come about." Oligur continues with just a bit more confidence "This is what I see."

"The opposite." Zeti adds her own simpler, more direct thoughts to Oligur's. Then as eyes turn to her she adds "Most people think that they see themselves in a reflection. It is in a way themselves, but it is more the opposite of themselves."

Nadakar's Tale

The Uzko returns her gaze to their storyteller and asks "I should know this, but what was the one time Dame Darkness used Uleria's gift, what action?"

Then after a moment of thought she says "Uleria has been in all ages then? Whole and as herself since before even the gods and goddesses." and silently in her thoughts wonders So through her could perhaps be found an anchor to visit all that was and is, to stay whole?

Sanuzi:  Yes, anyone can go to any of the storys/plays/events.  There are very few duties during sacred week, save for patrols (as Jelmine has been in danger).

Oligur:
Idovanus looks at Oligur, and says, "an interesting answer.  Instead of thinking of yourself, you have thought of the greater self."  He looks at you with an appraising eye, noticing something he may not have seen before.

Zeti:
Nadakar has a look of consternation when you ask about Dame Darkness.  "Darkness keeps many secrets, and this is one of them that even I have never penetrated.  I know from the wisdom of Uleria that Dame Darkness used the gift of fertility once.  Was it to birth Water? Or was it used for some other purpose?  You may be able to one day go where I cannot and find the answer."

Then to your unasked question, he says, "love is the bridge that connects all worlds and all times.  The question is not whether or not it is possible, but how?"

To Idovanus's question:  "A reflection is not just opposite of something.  It can reveal things that a person does not wish to see.  We cannot look upon our selves, save in reflection."

Sacred Week

Anrin, leader of the Murval family, stands before the assembled and relates a very familiar tale of Elmal.  The story is enacted by younger members of the family, but when it begins, there are elders that shadow the children, including Farin.  As the story unfolds, the children become the focus, and the elders seem to disappear from the stage.

Elmal was one of the Fire Tribe, and like all of his brothers served the Emperor during the Golden Age.  Then Chalana Arroy healed his sight so that this own brightness no longer blinded him.  For the first time, he could see everything around him, and he saw the true nature of his family within the Fire Tribe, that by being blinded by their own light, they had enslaved the world to their whims.  He left the palace with Chalana Arroy, but as he left he said to his brothers, "light is important, but it is not the only important thing.  I must find and learn what these other things are."  After leaving the palace, he gave the only thing he could to the great healer, a kiss.  But that story is for another telling.

Like so many who had seen past the blinding light to the truth, he wandered the world seeking his true path.  When the rage of the Storm Age fell upon the world, and God killed God, Elmal tried to avoid the conflicts.  When things got worse, his honor forced him to act.  He performed many great deeds, especially slaying Teghern, who had two noses like mammoth trunks.  After he killed it, Elmal found another Eurmal nearby, concealed in a turnip.  Eurmal asked, "why do you glow so brightly?  If you didn't, you could have hidden from Teghern instead of fighting it."

Elmal answered, "if I don't face my foes today, I will have to face them tomorrow. Eurmal departed, but whenever he was threatened, he told his attackers about Elmal so that they would attack him instead.  In this way, even Elmal's own brothers came to attack him.

His brothers, when they found Elmal, said, "you took part of the brilliance of our tribe with you.  Letting Darkness and Chaos in to attack us.  Now we will take your brilliance back."

Elmal responded, "blinded by your own light, you allowed Chaos to encircle the world and enter the palace.  If only you had turned to look, you would have seen the shadows of Darkness and prevented it from entering the palace.  My brilliance is my own, a gift from Aether, and not something you can take."  His brothers attacked and nearly killed him, but Elmal refused to fight back.  He called upon divine Justice to save him, and it did.  He escaped with the last particle of decency of the Fire Tribe in the Justice Spear that was forged from his honor and which he still bears to this day.  After his defeat, his brother did not want to fight him anymore, but they still coveted his brilliance.

Elmal heard that a great leader was assembling the best gods to be his companions.  He learned that Durev was this great leader, but considering the brutal reputation of the Storm Tribe, he almost turned back.  He decided to continue and test the honor of Durev, to see if he was worthy of Elmal's allegiance.

The two gods finally met when Elmal was about to cross the river into the lands of the Storm Tribe.  Durev, now in the form of the raging storm Orlanth, would not let him pass unless he stated his name.  When Elmal spoke his name, the raging storm would not let him pass over the cloud bridge.  Elmal persisted and the two fought until Elmal used the Justice Spear to trip both of them into the river.  The raging storm would have left Elmal in the river to drown, but Durevreached out from the storm and rescued him, thus proving his worth.

Elmal accompanied Durev back to his Hall.  He was impressed with the peace within the house, although he saw people from the Water, Earth, and Darkness Tribes there among the great host of the Storm Tribe.  Elmal agreed to remain for the winter as a guest.  The winter was long, and an army of Uz attacked the stead in the deepest part demanding vengeance for what they saw as wrongs against the Darkness.  Before anyone could speak, Elmal raised his spear and helped to drive them off.  His reward for his act was a seat in the household.  Later a Chaos army attacked, and Elmal again was instrumental in driving them off.  Durev named him thane and offered him a seat at the high table, which Elmal accepted.

Elmal proved himself many times.  He used te Justice Spear to defeat the enemies of the Storm Tribe and to resolve disputes honorably.  When the dark winter was at its worst, and the world seemed lost, Durev accepted the responsibility for what had been done in the celestial palace, and once again took up the mantle of the Raging Storm.  Before he left his wife to take up the Light-Bringer's Quest, he recommended Elmal to the clan.  With Ernalda's blessing, he was elected as the new Chieftain.  As was his right, Ernalda lay with him as her new husband.

During the Age of Chaos, when Ernalda went to sleep and the Earth seemed to die, enemies besieged, assaulted, and infiltrated the clan.  Elmal broke the siege, slaughtered the assailants, and discovered the infiltrators with the aid of Rigsdal.  He received many wounds and lost his best friends and boon companions.  When the stead was destroyed and he could barely walk, he climbed to the top of Kero Fin and continued to shine on those few humans who remained.  Yet he never faltered, and he held the household of Durev intact for the entire Darkness.  In this way, the Vingkotlings survived the Long Night.

As Durev returned from the Underworld, but before he had emerged from Dawn's gate, a beacon of hope shone to the East of Kero Fin, and a warning to the Darkness that their time on the surface was short, and a sign that Elmal's vigil was nearly at an end. When Durev returned, he bore a sacred torch.  He cast it high into the sky so that it flew to where Elmal waited.  Elmal caught it and was healed so that he burned brightly again to welcome the return of Durev.  Elmal, always loyal, gladly handed the Ring back to Durev, who became chieftain again.

We have worshiped Elmal since the Dawn, and strive to live a life of honor and vigilance.
We serve the Queen of the Earth and her Husband just as Elmal served Ernalda and his friend Durev.

Sacred Week

At the behest of Desola, Kalisla of Garlin tells the tale of the flower of life.  This is performed by the young; those who have not yet been initiated.  A group of girls represents the Earth Tribe, and young boys represent the fire tribe or storm tribe.

The first Flower Day was at the start of the Golden Age when the Bright Emperor commanded that members of all the tribes live in the Golden City at the center of the world.  This need for change was new and distressed many whose tranquility had been undisturbed during the Green Age.  "How can we possibly survive somewhere new?  We will die, " said many of the young daughters of the Earth.

"There is always another way," said Ernalda.  "Let me show you the Flower of Life."  Then she showed to the goddesses of her tribe the secret of the commanded change, a secret that she had learned from another.  She turned herself from the tight bud of life to the open blossom, an explosion of life like the effusion of a sweet scent.  The others were not just comforted by this but excited to flower too [the girls begin a dance around the figure of Ernalda, represented by Kalisla].  "But wait my sisters.  It is not time for all of us to flower."  She gathered all of those who were going to the Emperor's palace and together they planted the beautiful flower gardens that pleased the Emperor and his court.  [The girls then begin a dance that mimics the opening of a flower, and then dance around as if planting seeds.  At this point, the boys representing the fire tribe join them in a dance around Kalisla].

The first Flower Day celebrated among our people was at the Dawn.  Ernalda gathered together the forces of life that had been freed by Durev and brought them back to the world.  First came young Voria, the flower girl, who gave the signal for the surviving people to rejoice [one young girl, who was given a Storm Tribe sash, moves forward and begins to throw flowers from a basket held by a boy.  When her footprints bloomed, the waiting people came out form heir hiding places.  She taught them the dance of new life and promised the dancers that she would come again every time they danced when her flowers bloomed.

In a pause while one of the Flower Day tableaux is being prepared for the dance, someone sings a wistful song in Fire Speech

Voices hum, crooning over Mare Graze Vale
Box-lyres strum, tuning as the airways rail
All alone, unknown, they find me
Memories, like these, remind me
Of the maid, mislaid behind me
Up in Mare Graze Vale...

We were pacing along, hm hmmm hm hm, in Mare Graze Vale
We could hear the canyons ringing, they seemed to wail
"You have stolen my heart, ta dee da dum, now don't turn tail"
As we sang love's old sweet song in Mare Graze Vale

Candle light, gleaming on the foreign floor
Lonely nights dreaming 'til we meet once more
Far apart, her heart is yearning
With a sigh, for my returning
Our desire, a fire still burning
As in days of yore

We were pacing along, hm hmmm hm hm, in Mare Graze Vale
We could hear the canyons ringing, they seemed to wail
"You have stolen my heart, ta dee da dum, now don't turn tail"
As we sang love's old sweet song in Mare Graze Vale

It is Tamarkorda. He is looking up into the sky, seemingly at nothing in particular
