Re: The Caboose (OOC Thread)

Actually it's because when Cyberpunk was originally designed those advanced in our world didn't exist, and were not thought of. The designers of the game didn't update the techs for our day and age, out of fluidity of the system and continuity of the idea's. Which if you think about it, I suppose makes some sense.

Prodigy as a Techie could probably make the group combination devices if we wanted to have them if Mister Green says they do not exist.

That being said, you mentioned the cyber-implant's, that is how Prodigy communicates both on cellphone's and radio. She has cyberear's because she was born deaf, and those implants are part of her ears. She could talk before, but cannot now do to some issues and thus communicates do to the subvocal nature of those implants. Hence the radio link requirement in the job add. ;)

All that being said, Mister Green, with the one that rolled to try and see if he knew or recognized any of us, would he of recognized Prodigy from the news?

Re: The Caboose (OOC Thread)

Prodigy:
This is something I never understood about Cyberpunk. We have phone's today that can function as both a two-way radio and cellphone, why doesn't the game? lol

Because Cyberpunk 2013 / 2020 was written in the late 1980s when dialup modems and analogue phone lines were considered cutting edge, and very few people foresaw just what and how computers would evolve.

*spoiler for those of a sensitive disposition*

That and having read some of Mr Pondsmiths work regarding

Spoiler text: (Highlight or hover over the text to view)
Cyberpunk v3 and the Datacrash (sorry, I did warn you..)
I'm not convinced he really understood information technology beyond one person at home with their Commodore64. Frankly we're lucky not to have 'punks exchanging info on cassette tapes.

Re: The Caboose (OOC Thread)

Regarding the technology, I wrote this for a game I ran on another board:

quote:
Teknoshock: the Future that Wasn't - Cyberpunk 2020 has its roots in an alt-history universe where the 80's was cutting edge and beepers still made sense: if you comb through the books cellphones are the old style cellular bricks rather than the digital devices we have now and computers are laughably slow, bulky and can store less than an iPod Mini, much less a smartphone. Thing is, rewriting the universe from the ground up and scrubbing the Gibsonian-taint free of the universe robs the setting of something. At the same time, I want technology to work in ways we recognize.

So I'm asking for a little suspension of disbelief on your part.

Rules-wise all you need to know is that cellphones will act like the cellphones you know of today: prepaid burner phones that just make calls run a few Euro, smart phones run a few hundred and there's a range of options in between. If you run with a smartphone it acts like a smartphone and for in-game purposes you have a mobile access point to a public E-terminal wherever you go. You can't netrun from it, though. Or, rather, you can but it is slow, cumbersome and makes you easy prey for some enterprising console cowboy. Also, for computers and other tech devices: at a bare minimum double any memory or storage capacity, battery life or cellular range. If you need a specific number for a particular device, we'll deal with it then; use this rule of thumb for planning purposes.

But.

Remember that these devices are going to have that slightly retro 80's aesthetic, and are going to exist alongside public e-terms and vidphone booths, and where the default color scheme is mirror-shades, neon and chrome rather than iApple white or matteMS black. Cyberpunk 2020 had the mission statement of Style over Substance: stick to the style and the we'll let the substance follow. And remember, choombatta, a little bit of cognitive dissonance isn't always a bad thing.

Re: The Caboose (OOC Thread)

I like what LK posted here. Yes Cyberpunk didn't follow anywhere close to where we are now, but that's okay. We will play with the 80's thought of what the future was gonna hold.

For those still waiting to get to Phoenix House, if you have a connection you have no problems getting there. If you don't. I will make that happen today via Mouse at the Barrage for those that are there.

Just send me a pm or post up here if you don't have a connection to get in.

Re: The Caboose (OOC Thread)

Jonno:
The NCART train was approaching the city centre when Jonno's cellphone beeped with an incoming text. It was LadyKoi's number with an address in the University District.
A glance at the route map showed the train would have to loop several stops north to reach the university area, or he could get off at Japantown and walk across the edge of the park, probably 10-15 minutes march.
After weeks cooped up in a one room apartment, he decided to get off at Japantown and walk.
He quickly texts LadyKoi back as the train pulls into the station.
On my way. ETA 15 minutes.

OOC -
Unless the GM throws me a random encounter (or I've misread the map), Jonno should be at Phoenix house in 15 minutes or thereabouts.

NCART is safer than walking. And given the map has no actual scale, I wouldn't say it's a short walk. Given the opportunity to be stopped by any number of issues. If you're walking I'll see what falls out of that.

Re: The Caboose (OOC Thread)

Game note, Reputation is the roll you need to determine if you know someone. You have to roll under the Reputation and it's a simple d10 roll. That means for new people your Rep is 0, so know that doesn't actually know you, hasn't heard of you. For the existing players from the original scene you do have a Reputation, though small, so people could have heard of you.

That is Overrider, Salaryman and Prodigy now.

PGs 54-55 for Reputation.

I've been trying to combine the official NC maps with the unofficial ones such as http://www.shoestring-graphics.com/CP2020/nightcity/ . My best guestimation is that the entire 'Controled Urban Zones' map is under 2km across - YMMV.
I used to work in central London carrying 7-8kg of tools and parts around in a rucksack and 1.5 kilometers in 15 mins was doable if on the verge of spilling my coffee as I walked.
I figure a fit, young, ex-soldier travelling light can cover the same distance a lot faster and lose less coffee in the process.

Re: The Caboose (OOC Thread)

Yeah it's really hard to get a scale of the map when they didn't provide one. I just know Japan Town is on the far side of the park with city central in the middle with a bunch of high rises. So yeah you can walk. Hell it might only take 15 minutes. It might take longer with the crowds/traffic etc.

Re: The Caboose (OOC Thread)

As noted above, if you heard of someone has to do with Reputation and not Streetwise. The existing PCs Salaryman/Prodigy/Gargoyle (if he ever returns)/Overrider have a Reputation. No one else does and as such you wouldn't have heard of them unless you can roll a 0 on a d10 :)

Well an actual d10 is labeled 0-9 so literally you could from a technical standpoint.  :-P

Sorry just keeping busy in mah head as we walk there…

In reply to Riot (msg # 894):

LOL sure try that option.

You guys are walking or taking a tram/taxi? It's not gonna be a short walk from the Batallion.

I will…and I’ll be disappointed every time the Rpol roller gives me a number that isn’t a zero.  *chuckles*

Tram was my guess since Artemis was talking about a tram pass…

We can always do the leisurely scenic route walking another time, lol.

Yeah, vehicles are... VERY expensive in Cyberpunk. We'll be taking public transit.

Maybe Artemis will pick up cyber skates :>

So, to clarify, is it cool to show up? Is Riot/Badge invited in for this one? I'm not 100% sure.
